FKA twigs in Vogue April 2014

DREAM STREET: FKA twigs brings her hypnotic sound stateside

"It's a simpler life - very pretty, very quiet," says Tahliah Barnett of her childhood in Gloucestershire, known for its rolling hills and castle ruins. "It's magical, but I never quite fit in." Under the monikor FKA twigs, the 26-year-old Brit is still standing out, with eerie melodies and breathtaking videos that have made her one of music's most intriguing new figures.

Her nickname dates from an early start in ballet. "When I danced, my bones cracked. Somebody named me Twigs because I was always snapping like one," she says with a laugh. After moving to London, she switched to music and in 2012 put out an EP that earned her comparisons to Aaliyah. It was the release of her critically acclaimed EP 2, though, that revealed her a category-shattering force. Coproduced by Arca, it combines the seemingly disparate sounds of nineties R&B and ambient electronica. Tracks like "Papi Pacify" and "Ultraviolet" explore female desire, while videos like "Water Me" in which she sheds over sized tears in an homage to Alice in Wonderland, suggest she is less interested in entertaining than being a provocateur. "I don't care about looking beautiful. Make me look weird; exaggerate me," Barnett says.

She's now putting the finishing touches on her highly anticipated debut album, but in her downtime enjoys taking a dance class or listening to the likes of Edith Piaf and Antony and the Johnsons. Even with a nomination for the BBC's Sound of 2014 prize, she retains a small town humility. "People talk about compromising their artistry, but I just believe in the compromise of being a decent person."

Rob Lowe says there's bias and prejudice against good-looking people and he pioneered the sex tape

Rob Lowe doesn't want you to focus on his good looks.

The 50-year-old, whose second memoir, Love Life, is out on April 8, says in an interview with The New York Times Sunday Magazine that it's not easy being pretty.

"There's this unbelievable bias and prejudice against quote-unquote good-looking people, that they can't be in pain or they can't have rough lives or be deep or interesting," he says. "They can't be any of the things that you long to play as an actor. I'm getting to play those parts now and loving it. When I was a teen idol, I was so goddamn pretty I wouldn't have taken myself seriously."

The actor insists that there is "a historical bias that good-looking people are not funny," but he's proven to be the exception to that rule in projects like Parks and Recreation.

Lowe explains that it's because deep down he's not that cool.

"My deep dark secret is that I was a nerd in school," he says. "I liked the theater. I liked to study. I wasn't very good at sports. It took being famous to make me cool, which, by the way, I never forgot."

Lowe learned about the darker side of fame in 1988 when his sex tape became public. But things have come full circle for the father of two – he's now starring in the movie Sex Tape with Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, about a couple whose homemade video goes missing.

The actor admits that the plotline wouldn't exist if it wasn't for him. "Considering I pioneered the field, it's high time I actually made some money in it," he says of taking a role in the film. "Now that it's a thing that suburban couples do when they're bored, I decided it's time to get back in the pool."

Farrah Abraham Thinks Jessica Alba Should Play Her In A Movie.

On Why She Almost Didn't Finish Writing Her Erotica:There’s a lot of heavy story work in the writing, but then it’s very hot and sexual when you’re writing it. In all honesty, it has been very hard for me to write the sexual scenes because it turns your mind on and it’s very hard to finish.

On Why It Will Be Better Than 50 Shades:It will have better sex scenes and also a more compelling story. The only research I really do — if we’re talking about research on the computer — I’m like, ‘Am I using the right sexual word?’ So people don’t get confused. I mean, there’s equally — among my friends and people I’ve run into and me — I think we’ve had enough sexual experiences for a lifetime so we’re sharing some of them.

On Her Character's Name:The names just came to my mind and I was pretty much set on Fallon Opal. So for me to have feedback from my friends and they said ‘we really like those names and they’re interesting,’ I kept them as they were.

On A Movie Version Of Her Erotica:If it were turned into a movie, which I think would also be awesome in its own sense, I just know I would have Jessica Alba play Fallon Opal. I think she’s very relatable to myself and Fallon Opal, and I think she’s had a very good career and I would trust her playing that part.

On Being A Writer:It’s very important for me to have a very awesome and authentic storyline because that’s me as a writer. If I’m having all the thoughts and fantasies and also taking true life experiences and I’m twisting that all together.

From a low-key ladies lunch to a night on the town, Selena Gomez continues her frolics with the Jenner girls.

The former Disney starlet, 21, who was recently photographed en route to do some daytime dining with Kendall, 18, joined the model and sister Kylie, 16, on Friday night at West Hollywood hotspot Bootsy Bellows.

The siblings, who just got back from a heavily documented trip to Thailand, hung out with Gomez in the VIP room of the club in the very back corner.

Gomez, with her hair in an unkempt ponytail, sported a varsity jacket and skirt, while surrounded by other friends who huddled around her to where she wasn't easily visible.

But at one point, she hit the dance floor with Kylie, where the two ladies and some of their friends danced to Jay Z's "Change Clothes" and Outkast's "Rosa Parks." A puppeteer, holding a puppet who was a character from A Nightmare Before Christmas, eventually approached the group and they all danced with it, seemingly getting a kick out of the experience.

Kendall, on the other hand, was all about honoring the 21st birthday of Teen Beach Movie's Garrett Clayton, who she hung out with for a little bit at his table. The TV personality, who was clad in a long, black dress that had fringe on the bottom, then joined Kylie and Gomez, who were very giggly and excited, while Kendall seemed a little more reserved.

The trio clung together as they exited the party spot just after midnight.

Gomez documented her bonding sesh with Kylie, posting an Instagram shot of the sexy young stars lying on their backs in different directions with the accompanying caption that said, "kylie&roses."

Key & Peele in Talks to Produce ‘Police Academy’ Reboot for New Line

Having established themselves as a formidable comedy brand with their hit sketch series “Key & Peele,” Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele are making a deal to produce the “Police Academy” reboot for New Line, TheWrap has learned.

Scott Zabielski (“Tosh.0”) is no longer attached to direct the film, which Key and Peele are in talks to produce with Paul Maslansky. While the duo have not agreed to star in the reboot yet, it's conceivable that they could appear in front of the camera depending on the strength of the script, which is currently being rewritten by Jeremy Garelick. David Diamond and David Weissman wrote the previous draft.

New Line released seven films in the “Police Academy” franchise between 1984 and 1994, and the series helped launch the careers of several stars including Steve Guttenberg and Kim Cattrall. The franchise spawned a short-lived animated series and a live-action series that ran for 26 episodes back in 1997. It's possible that actors from the original “Police Academy” movies could reprise their roles in the reboot via fun cameos.

Key and Peele started out on “MADtv” before they landed their own series, which has had several sketches go viral. The duo are also developing an untitled comedy with Judd Apatow for Universal.

Key will soon be seen in Luke Greenfield's Fox comedy “Let's Be Cops,” which stars Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. as civilians who get in over their heads when they pretend to be real police officers. He and Peele also play FBI agents on FX's upcoming series “Fargo.” The duo are repped by UTA and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Taye Diggs, Draco Malfoy and most importantly KAIDAN ALENKO to star in "Murder in the First"

The morning fog had lifted over San Francisco's Chinatown, and actor Taye Diggs was busy chasing down a lead in a Silicon Valley murder case.

"I didn't do nothing!" yelled a witness, as Diggs - playing SFPD homicide Inspector Terry English - collared him on the Grant Avenue sidewalk. "Police brutality!"

The scene was shot on a recent Monday morning in San Francisco for the new series "Murder in the First," to debut in early June on TNT. Co-created by Emmy-winner Steven Bochco, the crime drama is set in San Francisco and follows a single case across the 10-episode first season. It involves inspectors Terry English and Hildy Mulligan (Kathleen Robertson) along with a rich and petulant young techie played byTom Felton (best known for his role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series);

tom felton da man august september 2011 15

Preparing for the police roles involved spending time with homicide detectives and inspectors in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and talking with police brass, including SFPD Chief Greg Suhr. Longtime homicide Inspector Joe Toomey is serving as a technical adviser on the series.

"They want to get the police stuff right," Inspector Toomey said, watching the scene in Chinatown - "the language, procedures, arrest techniques, crime lab, that sort of thing."

Robertson, who recently appeared in the political drama "Boss" with Kelsey Grammer, prepared for the role by talking with Police Chief Suhr and doing ride-alongs with detectives. She went into crack houses, watching as criminals were apprehended and arrests were made.

"I asked questions about how they do things, what they love about these shows and what these shows always get wrong," Robertson said, sitting in the Four Seas restaurant in Chinatown, which served as a location for shooting. "The biggest thing I got from my research that isn't in television shows or movies is the true dynamic between the cops and the 'bad guys.' They know each other. The cops know the offenders, and it's actually much more casual because they know each other."

Okay but the point is, Draco Malfoy, right? And there is also a thrilling secret hidden in this unfortunately unembeddable video, so you will have to click the link:

Five (3) Things We’ve Learned in Five Years of Box Office Reports

$

Five years ago this week, TIME.com launched its Box Office Report column. Each Sunday, or Monday on holiday weekends, I’ve laden readers with stats and analysis on the business of show: the winners, losers and trends of new movies.

The occasion of this anniversary (for which, hint, the traditional gift is wood) got me to wondering what’s changed in the film industry over the past half-decade. It turns out: lots.

2. Women do matter. For decades, Hollywood has trusted one narrow demographic — young males — to subsidize its big-budget productions. In fact, the gender split in the domestic audience is 50-50: women attend as many movies as men do. The studios must have figured that the few femme-angled blockbusters (like Mamma Mia!, which earned $610 million worldwide in 2008) were flukes, and that, in the absence of “women’s pictures,” the gals would go to movies made for guys. Statistics seemed to bear out that prejudice: Of the 12 top-grossing films of 2011, only one — The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 — boasted a leading character who was female.

Credit the Twilight success, which spurred other gynocentric franchises based on Young Adult novels, and the skew of girl-power animated features for the return of that beleaguered majority — women — to movie marquees. In 2012 The Hunger Games, Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Pixar’s Brave were among the year’s top eight films. And last year three of the top six had female protagonists: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Frozen and Gravity— all released in Oct. or Nov., outside the usual blockbuster summer season. Indeed, Catching Fire, with Jennifer Lawrence in the lead, became the first top-grossing film of any year since 1965 (Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music) with a woman in the primary, starring role.

Three other residents of last year’s top 10 (Despicable Me 2, Monsters University and Oz the Great and Powerful) attracted strong majorities of female viewers. Now Hollywood has to think of new femme heroines — as long as she’s a warrior, a princess or a lonely space traveler.

3. So do kids, old folks and Hispanics.Hollywood’s traditional wheelhouse — adults 18 to 49 years old — has recently slipped a gear: movie attendance of that age group is down. But younger and older viewers are swelling the grosses. “In 2013, the share of tickets sold t0 2-11 year olds was at its highest point since 2009,” the MPAA study reports, “and the share of tickets sold to 50-59 year olds was at an all time high.” Senior citizens (60-plus) are also attending in droves. So you’ll be seeing more kid-friendly animated features, and more roundups of elderly stars as in Lost Vegas — a Hangover for alterkockers — and Sly Stallone’s Expendables movies. Lucky oldsters.

The average American “Caucasian,” as the MPAA calls the white majority, goes to just three movies a year. Fortunately for Hollywood, Hispanics have taken up the slack. They “report the highest annual attendance per capita, attending on average six times per year.” Representing 17% of the U.S. population, Hispanics have accounted for more than 30% of the audience for comedies (Ride Along), action films (Furious 6), horror movies (The Purge) and war epics (Lone Survivor). They also made their own hit: the Spanish-language dramedy Instructions Not Included, starring Univision TV favorite Eugenio Derbez. In the U.S. it earned $44.5 million. That’s the biggest foreign-language gross since Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ — except that, for the bilingual Latinos who flocked to theaters, Instructions was in their own language.
5. A billion dollars ain’t what it used to be.Cameron’s Titanic, released in 1997, was the first movie to crack the billion-dollar barrier in worldwide gross. By Mar. 2009, when we started, four other pictures — Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the third Lord of the Rings, the second Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Batman sequel The Dark Knight — had joined Titanic by earning at least $1 billion. In the five years since, that number has grown to 18, including last year’s Iron Man Three and Frozen.
If the billionaire’s club isn’t so exclusive these days, it’s in part because Hollywood has learned to market its biggest movies to the expanding global market, but mainly because ticket prices keep climbing— up 30% since 2004 and 13% since 2008. Inflation tarnishes the billion-dollar sheen. In real dollars, at the domestic box office (the only numbers available), Titanic is fifth all-time, behind Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, The Sound of Music and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Again in real dollars, Cameron’s Avatar is the only movie made in this century to appear in the all-time top 25. On this list, Iron Man Three is in 102nd place, Frozen in 109th.
So show some skepticism when you read stories about a new hit like Frozen passing The Lion King to achieve the “all-time record” for an animated feature, with nary a mention of inflation. In real dollars, or tickets sold, the double-princess movie lags behind at least dozen earlier Disney or Pixar cartoons. By that standard, Disney’s all-time animated hit is its first: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
And on a personal note: A (noninflationary) billion thanks to readers and editors for this first five years. We’ll check back in 2019 to see if the numbers and meanings of movies have felt other seismic changes.

And on a personal note: A (noninflationary) billion thanks to readers and editors for this first five years. We’ll check back in 2019 to see if the numbers and meanings of movies have felt other seismic changes.

Fox Eyes Reality Show About Struggling Couples Who Switch Partners For Weekend

Is Fox heading back to Temptation Island? I hear that the network is in talks for a pilot order to Couples Retreat, a new reality project that would put couples to the test. Unlike Fox’s controversial Temptation Island, which was trying to break couples whose relationship was not strong enough, Couples Retreat aims at helping couples whose relationships are struggling using an unconventional method: “each agree to go on a fantasy weekend with the opposite-gender partner of a similarly matched couple.”

The provocative concept, which likely will draw swinging-couple references, is sure to raise eyebrows. The project, which is now casting, comes from Red Arrow-backed Kinetic Content, run by Chris Coelen, who previously worked on ABC’s Wife Swap.

Under new Fox alternative topper Simon Andreae, the network has been pushing the envelope with provocative social-experiment shows like Couples Retreat and the upcoming series Utopia, in which a group of strangers is isolated from the world in order to build a new society. The big-budget Utopia, created by John de Mol, is in preproduction.

Controversial 'Fight Church' Pits Pastor vs. Pastor

A new movie, "Fight Church," raises the unusual question: "Can you love your neighbor while kneeing him in the face?"The documentary, by directors Daniel Junge and Bryan Storkel, is about pastors who practice mixed martial arts with their parishioners.

"Tough guys need Jesus, too," one parishioner explained in the trailer for the film.

The controversial topic is raising eyebrows because Jesus obviously preached nonviolence and turning the other cheek. But Pastor Paul Burress, featured in the movie, defends his unlikely evangelization techniques. "We don't fight out of meanness," Burress of Trinity Church in Rochester, N.Y., told ABC News. "We have no hate or bitterness in our heart."

Some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts today are featured in the film. "I probably wouldn't be in the position I am today if I wasn't a Christian," explained Jon Jones, a professional MMA fighter.

Despite the critics, the pastors of "Fight Church" stand by their mission. "We've been able to reach an awful lot of people that never would have walked into a normal church service before, but they'll come over and do some fitness training or do some jiu-jitsu," Burress said.

The documentary premieres April 24 at the Independent Film Festival of Boston. [Trailer at source.]

Great news, Keanu Reeves, your Matrix leader has signed on to a new psychosexual thrillerKnock Knock directed by Eli Roth.

Reeves will star as a married man who is left alone for the weekend, when two young girls arrive at his home and seek to destroy his life.

The roles of the two young girls will be played by Lorenza Izzo, who just starred in Roth’s The Green Inferno, and Ana de Armas, who recently starred in Hands Of Stone

Roth spoke on landing Keanu Reeves for the lead role:

"I wanted to make a movie like Roman Polanski or Paul Verhoeven made when they were young, a classic psychosexual thriller that’s not a horror movie, but would have everyone on the edge of their seats.”

“Getting Keanu is amazing, he’s a fine actor who is perfect for this. I feel I can have this movie ready for Toronto if I need to, and he’s catching a plane tomorrow and we’ll be fitting him for wardrobe right away.”

Eli Roth made his mark with the terrifying horror film Cabin Fever in 2002 and his dark and twisted vision with the Hostel franchise.

Sister Wives Hide Their Physical Relationship From Each Other

Brady Williams and his five wives have 24 children and even though he and Nonie (wife #4) have decided to have another baby, they’re keeping the news secret from the other women because sex is not something they all openly discuss in their polygamist family.

In a sneak peek of My Five Wives next episode, Nonie explains her fear of sharing the news with her sister wives.

“It’s a little awkward because I don’t want to tell my sister wives about my decision,” she reveals.

“Having a baby is a very physical manifestation of a sexual relationship. In plural marriage, he’s having a sexual relationship with every one of his wife.”

So instead of openly discuss their individual sex lives, Nonie explains that they just block out the truth.

“We kind of sometimes like to not go there because it is a little hard to have to share that sexual relationship. So for me to go tell my sister wives that I’m ready to have a baby, to me that’s just throwing it in their face, hey every night we’re going to be having sex.”

Jay-Z causes controversy by wearing medallion of group who believe whites are 'wicked and weak'

$

0

Jay-Z raised eyebrows at the Barclay's Center last week when he wore a medallion symbolizing the Five Percent Nation.
The Brooklyn-born rapper was sitting court-side at a Nets game on Tuesday with wife Beyonce when he was snapped wearing the controversial symbol.

One of the core tenants of the Five Percent Nation - an off-shoot of the Nation of Islam - is that white people are 'wicked and inferior' to black men.

When asked by a reporter whether the medallion is meaningful to him, Jay-Z shrugged and said 'A little bit'.

This isn't the first time that the rapper has been connected to the Five-Percenters.
He was photographed wearing another similar medallion while giving radio interviews for his album Magna Carta Holy Grail last summer.
And in 'Heaven' a track on that album, Jay-Z references the Five-Percenters acronym for Allah by rapping 'Arm leg leg arm head'.

The Five Percent Nation was founded in 1963 by Clarence Smith, a former student of Malcolm X.
But Smith decided to split off from the Nation of Islam after disagreeing over the idea of God.

Smith didn't believe that God was a supernatural being, but rather something found in every black man (black women do not have God in them and are considered subordinates, but still hold a higher standing than white people).

Which means he disagreed with the Nation of Islam's belief that founder Wallace Fard Muhammad was God since Muhammad was bi-racial and not 'purely black'.

'The rationale is that the black man is God and created the universe, and is physically stronger and intellectually stronger and more righteous naturally,' author Michael Muhammad Knight told the New York Post.
'Whiteness is weak and wicked and inferior — basically just an errant child who needs to be corrected.'

Knight, a white converted Muslim, has written two books on the the Five-Percenters and told Vice: 'The first lesson I learned from the Five Percent was simple. F*** white people. White people are devils'.

While Five-Percenters don't refer to themselves as Muslims, they borrow their name from the Nation of Islam's idea that five per cent of humanity are 'poor righteous teachers' who are trying to teach the world the truth of existence.

Another 10 per cent know the truth of existence but keep the 85 per cent majority in ignorance by preaching belief in a 'mystery god'.
Jay-Z isn't the only rapper that has taken up the Five Percent cause.

Busta Rhymes, Wu Tang Clan and Lord Jabar of Brand Nubian are all noted followers.

But a representative for the group's upstate region told the Post that they are not happy with Jay-Z flaunting their symbol.
'Jay Z is not an active member — no one has vouched for him” said Saladin Allah. 'It was always understood that you don’t wear the regalia if you don’t totally subscribe to the life.'

Chatting Veronica Mars’ New Book Series with Co-Author Jennifer Graham

It’s no secret that Veronica Mars has an insanely dedicated following.

After the beloved mystery TV series ended in 2007, it found new life this year in the form of a Kickstarter-funded feature film. Released earlier this month, the Veronica Mars movie was written and directed by show creator Rob Thomas (who also co-created another cult favorite series, Party Down). In the film, Veronica (played again by Kristen Bell) returns to her hometown of Neptune, California, years after the show’s conclusion to investigate a murder that her former flame, Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), is accused of.

But while fans (or “Marshmallows”) eagerly wait to see if Veronica Mars will be getting the sequel treatment, they can already find out what happens next to the beloved private investigator. Picking up almost three months after the events of the movie, Veronica Mars: The Thousand Dollar Tan Line (Amazon) is the first installment in an all-new original mystery book series. Co-written by Thomas and author Jennifer Graham, the novel (published on March 25 by Vintage) finds Veronica back in Neptune, this time trying to solve a missing person’s case. And when a second girl with unexpected ties to Veronica’s past goes missing too, it’s up to Veronica to uncover the truth surrounding one of her most personal cases yet.

Taking a break from writing the second novel in the series, Graham chatted with me about transferring Veronica Mars to a new medium, how she and Thomas worked together, what Marshmallows can look forward to in the book, and more.

ALEX NAGORSKI: From a storytelling perspective, what are the advantages of telling Veronica Mars stories on the page versus TV or film?
JENNIFER GRAHAM: One of the things that fiction can do that TV or film can’t is to give the reader access to a character’s internal life. Obviously, Veronica in both the movie and the show has that hardboiled voice-over, so to some degree we get to hear what she’s thinking, and Kristen Bell conveys a lot of nuance in her performances. But in a book we get a little more of Veronica’s mindset, which was both exciting and terrifying for me. On the one hand, we have this amazing opportunity to bear witness to more of her thoughts and memories and get closer to her personal experience. On the other hand, the act of imagining the interior world of such an iconic character is a little intimidating, especially when that character is as complex as Veronica. Veronica’s a bad-ass, but she’s not a cartoon bad-ass; there are ways she’s vulnerable or even insecure. I didn’t want to show her mooning around or being self-pitying, but I also didn’t want her to come across as a robot. I tried really hard to capture that balance.

Does this book work as a jumping on point for the Veronica Mars universe? Or do readers need to have seen the show and movie to understand what’s going on?
We tried to make it accessible to both veteran Marshmallows and people who aren’t fans yet. I think anyone with an interest in PI fiction could pick it up and be quite entertained, whether or not they’ve seen the show/movie. I did drop in a few in-jokes and call-backs–as a fan myself, they were a lot of fun to write–but I don’t think they’re distracting or confusing. And Rob’s characters are so damn good, I think new readers will be more than willing to jump in.

Were you a fan of the series before working with Rob on this novel? If so, what’s your favorite episode?
I totally was! I’m not sure what my favorite episode is, but I have a half-dozen favorite moments–Lilly’s tribute video, which always makes me tear up; the plot twist at the end of “You Think You Know Somebody;” the “locked room” mysteries of “An Echolls Family Christmas” and “Ain’t No Magic Mountain High Enough.” I’m a big structure junkie, and so my favorite moments of Veronica tend to show the tightness and control of the narrative while also giving space for the emotional through-lines of the series.

Can you walk me through you and Rob’s creative process as co-writers? Did you alternate writing chapters/scenes, or did you have to figure out a system of how to write together at the same time?
We “broke” the plot of the book writers’ room style–Rob had the seed of an idea, and we sat down to hash out the main twists and turns of the plot together. When we had the basic structure nailed down, I went home and wrote like the wind. I had an outline to work from, but Rob really encouraged me to take some ownership of the project as well, which was so generous of him and so fun for me. I had plenty of space to flex my creative muscles and contribute to Veronica’s world. Then when I’d finished my draft, Rob got involved again in the revisions, to make sure the whole thing was in line with his vision.

The Thousand Dollar Tan Line is described as “the first book in a thrilling new mystery series.” How many books are planned? And have you already started working on the sequel?
I am feverishly working on book two as we speak! So far that’s all that’s set in stone. Everything after this next one depends on how the books are received.

The book picks up right after the events of the historic Veronica Mars feature film, which was released earlier this month. Will the characters in the book be familiar to fans of the show and movie, or are you introducing a whole new roster of characters?
Most of the characters are from the show and movie. I think Veronica Mars fans are really invested in the supporting cast, more so than in a lot of comparable franchises. Part of the draw of the series is Veronica’s relationship with the various members of her support network, and I wanted to make sure that relationship played a role in the book. As a fan myself, I would have been disappointed not to get to write anything about Keith or Weevil or Wallace. There are definitely a few new faces too, though–it’s a brand new case, and Veronica’s been away from Neptune for a long time.

What are some of your personal favorite mystery novels? And are there any particular authors who inspired you while writing this book?
My favorite crime writer is probably Ed Brubaker. He and Sean Philips put out a comic called Criminal that I re-read half a dozen times while working on Veronica. It’s not a mystery per se, but it is pure pulpy noir in the very best sense–full of antiheroes, bad decisions, lost causes, tortured pasts, haunting secrets, and grit, grit, grit. Anyone who’s into Veronica‘s darker genre nods should absolutely check it out.
I also re-read a lot of classic hardboiled and noir material while I was working on the book–Raymond Chandler, Patricia Highsmith, Dashiell Hammett, Chester Himes, Micky Spillane. I wanted to make sure the cynical, hard-edged element of those writers took up some residence in my prose. And I’m a Gillian Flynn fan, too. Her first two books especially engage with trauma in a way I think is relevant to working with Veronica, whose trauma has historically been a part of her drive.

If you were a private investigator, what’s the first mystery you’d try to solve?
This question runs the risk of exposing me as a total ghoul, because I am a little bit obsessed with famous unsolved murders. Zodiac, the Boy in the Box, the Black Dahlia, the Axeman of New Orleans, the Cleveland Torso murders. The obvious Whitechapel legacy. But morbid curiosity aside, I’d like to believe I’d also put my skills towards exposing corruption and inequality. Neptune is a convenient microcosm, but there are a lot of Sheriff Lambs in the world.

Vote For The Best Character At The MTV Movie Awards
Use social mentions to choose Katniss, Veronica Mars, Tris, Loki or Khan.

We fully acknowledge that today is April Fools' Day, but there is no way we would joke about this. MTV has just announced the social category for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, and it's a big one.

This year, you will get to decide who takes home the Golden Popcorn for Best Character.

That's right. It's up to you to choose who was the greatest character in all of movie-dom in the past year, but the decision will not be an easy one.

Katniss Everdeen, Veronica Mars, Tris, Loki and Khan are all vying for your hashtags to get them to the stage of the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on Sunday, April 13.

To vote for your pick, you'll need to include the right hashtag in your posts to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Vine. You can put anything you want into the post, as long as it includes the right hashtag.

For Katniss, use the hashtag #votekatniss. For Veronica Mars, use the hashtag #voteveronicamars. For Tris, use the hashtag #votetris. For Loki, use the hashtag #voteloki. For Khan, use the hashtag #votekhan.

Each mention of the hashtag will be counted as a vote for the corresponding character. Voting is now officially open and will remain open throughout the show on April 13.

Voting on the rest of the categories for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards is still open, but to make your picks there, you'll have to head over to the show page on MTV.com to decide who gets the Golden Popcorn in those categories.

The 2014 MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Conan O'Brien, are happening on Sunday, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, live from the Nokia Theatre.

Have You Seen George W. Bush’s Portraits Of World Leaders?

George W. Bush recently sat down with his daughter and Today correspondent, Jenna Bush Hager, to discuss his paintings of various world leaders.

The paintings are part of an exhibit, “The Art of Leadership: A President’s Personal Diplomacy,” at the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

It includes photographs and other memorabilia from Bush’s visits with the leaders.

Bush said he chose leaders he admired to be his subjects, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

During the interview Friday, Bush recalled introducing Russian President Vladimir Putin to his beloved Scottish terrier, Barney.

“As you know, our dear dog Barney, who had a special place in my heart — Putin dissed him and said, ‘You call it a dog?’” Bush said. “A year later, your mom and I go to visit and Vladimir says, ‘Would you like to meet my dog?’ Out bounds this huge hound, obviously much bigger than a Scottish terrier, and Putin looks at me and says, ‘Bigger, stronger and faster than Barney.’”

“Vladimir is a person who in many ways viewed America as an enemy. I tried, of course, to dispel him of that notion,” Bush told his daughter.

“I wanted to make sure the last chapters of my life are full, and painting, it turns out, would help occupy not only space, but kind of open my mind,” Bush said.

Bush is extremely humble about his artwork.

“I’m not a great artist…I don’t want people to think I’m a great artist,” he said.

The exhibit also contains a self-portrait and a rendition of his dad.

Shahs Star Lilly Ghalichi Engaged--But Will She Keep the Ring?!

Surprise! Lilly Ghalichi is getting married after all!
The Shahs of Sunset star had some fun on April Fools' Day by sharing a collage of pictures—including one that featured a huge diamond ring—on her Instagram account. "Engaged!!!!!!!!!!" she wrote.
The 30-year-old Bravolebrity shared a second picture on the social networking site (which has since been deleted) and told her followers, "For those of you that think it's an April fools joke, so did I at first when he got on one knee!! That was his whole plan, he's so funny, romantic and crazy like that."
Given the timing, some of Ghalichi's fans wondered if she was indeed telling the truth.
So what's the real story? Is she really engaged to 29-year-old entrepreneur Dhar Mann?

"My boyfriend, Dhar, actually proposed to me two weeks ago when we were on vacation in the Maldives," Ghalichi tells E! News exclusively. "He rented this tiny island for us to have dinner at. There was a chef and a waiter and the only thing on this island is a little table for two. It was super romantic. He proposed to me there, but he didn't have a ring. I was like, 'Then it doesn't count. I want a ring.'"
"We didn't tell anyone else about the proposal," she adds. "We just kept it to ourselves."
In fact, Ghalichi says it was Mann's idea to "tell everyone were we're getting married" on Instagram. "We posted our 'engagement' news with an old photo of me wearing this diamond ring I had borrowed while doing press in New York City a few months ago. It's a 12-carat ring I wore on Watch What Happens Live and Wendy Williams and it's just stunning. It was valued at around $750,000 and I had to have two bodyguards with me when I wore it.
"So everyone, including me, thought the whole thing was an April Fools' joke but then, with about two minutes left on Apr. 1, Dhar gets down on one knee and proposes again in his apartment," she recalls. "I'm laughing but he was like, 'No, I mean it. And this time, I got you the ring you wanted.'"
"The original ring I had worn had already been sold to another customer, but he went back to the dealer and had him make me an identical one—this time with a better quality diamond. The shape and setting is the same, but the diamond is better," she vows. "It wasn't ready yet, so Dhar had them take a video of it to show me. That's the video we posted. That's the ring I'm getting. It's supposed to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. So what started out as an engagement joke turned into a real engagement. It's confusing, I know! But no one knew he had actually proposed to me for the first time weeks ago."
Ghalichi, a blogger and businesswoman in her own right, isn't sure she wants to keep the bling.
"The only thing is, now I'm not sure that's the ring I want! It's so big—where am I going to wear something like that?" she wonders. "After it arrives, I have seven days to decide if I want to keep it."
Ghalichi and Mann have known each other since June 2013, but the future spouses didn't begin dating until January 2014. In fact, the couple will celebrate their two-month anniversary this Sunday.
The engagement may seem fast, the bride-to-be admits, but she has faith she'll make it down the aisle.
To the haters, Ghalichi tells E! News, "I'm not worried. When you know, you know. On our first date, he looked at me and told me we're going to get married. I thought he was crazy, but he was right!"
Congratulations to the happy couple!
