Kobe Bryant was not impressed with Miami's Trayvon tribute

In the March 31 edition of the New Yorker there’s a great profile of Kobe Bryant by Ben McGrath. In it, Bryant talks about aging out of his Hall of Fame career with the Los Angeles Lakers, and how he thinks his fame is “pretty fucking cool” for a kid who grew up in Italy and moved to suburban Philly as a teenager.

Throughout his career, Bryant’s been talking about as an outsider, specifically when it comes to being the most famous in the world in a sport that’s overwhelmingly black. It’s given him a politically moderate stance on things, which was on display when McGrath brought up the subject of LeBron James posting a photo online of the Heat players dressed in hoodies in solidarity with Trayvon Martin.

"I won’t react to something just because I’m supposed to, because I’m an African-American,” he said. “That argument doesn’t make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we’ve progressed as a society? Well, we’ve progressed as a society, then don’t jump to somebody’s defense just because they’re African-American. You sit and you listen to the facts just like you would in any other situation, right? So I won’t assert myself.”

The profile goes on to quote former NFL running back Jim Brown, who at one point said, “[Kobe] is somewhat confused about culture, because he was brought up in another country.” Bryant then defended himself on Twitter, writing, “A ‘Global’ African American is an inferior shade to ‘American’ African American?? #hmmm . that doesn’t sound very #Mandela or #DrKing sir.”

Setting aside a minute the fact that Bryant doesn’t seem know much about the Trayvon Martin case, what strikes me about this exchange is his insistence on questioning what it means to be black in America, particularly from the perspective of someone who grew up elsewhere. In this vein I think of Zade Smith and Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie’s recent discussion at the Schomburg, where Adichie talked at length about coming to the United States from Nigeria and learning how deeply embedded race is in American culture. What sets Bryant apart is his stingy insistence on clinging to a “post-racial” identity, this very old, conservative notion that black people should not be treated differently in this country — despite all of the evidence, like Martin’s death, that they are. P
eople didn’t stand up for Trayvon Martin just because he was a black boy, they did it because his death so sharply illustrated the dangers of being a black boy in America.

Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Scoop: Lucy Hale and Ian Harding Tease Ezria's "Insanely Strong" Love

It's been seven days.

Seven days since Pretty Little Liars' ugly cry-inducing season-four finale, and we're still trying to process the whirlwind of crazy that whipped across our TV screens. Here's our super-spoilery, itty-bitty recap: Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker) is dead. Mona (Janel Parrish) has known Ali (Sasha Pieterse) was alive this entire time. And last, but certainly not least: Ezra (Ian Harding) was shot in a confrontation with "A"!

Now, fans must endure 77 Rosewood-free days (it's not like we've been counting, or anything) before we can be reunited with our fab fivesome and witness the sure-to-be shocking aftermath of that fateful night on the roof. To help pass the time, and alleviate some of your worries, we chatted with stars Lucy Hale and Ian Harding and got them to spill exclusive secrets on the future of Ezria's romance, Fitz's fate and more! Read on, little liars—you know you want to…

Let's just immediately get this out of the way, OK? When asked about Ezra's future fate, Harding was all smiles at the Pretty Little Liars' PaleyFest celebration last week. "I'm feeling great!" the actor gushed. "I signed a contract for a fifth season, so I'm feeling all right." Phew! Let's all take a minute to breathe a collective sigh to relief, shall we?

Although it appears that our favorite English teacher is going to survive his traumatic altercation with the enemy, let's just say Ezra is not going to be hitting the gym or running any marathons anytime soon. "He's going to be in bad shape," Harding revealed. "I haven't seen the first script back, but in the costume fitting, I was getting fitted for medical gowns, several of them." Confession: We asked, but it looks like the gowns are not going to be backless. Aw, snap!

Our heads are still spinning from Ezra's roller-coaster ride of a season and, apparently, so is Aria's. Hale reflected, "It's been such a ride, with the bombshell of thinking Ezra was 'A,' and then figuring out that he wasn't, and then him helping out the girls in the end. Seriously, crazy."

However, now that we know that Ezra will survive his unexpected sacrifice for Aria and the girls, we're curious to find out if will join Team PLL in the fight against "A." "I'd be interested to see how much am I helping them now or how much do they trust me considering that I've been living a lie for the past four years—or I guess year and a half in Rosewood time," Harding explained of Ezra's allegiance.

But let's be honest, many fans only care about one thing: Will Aria and Ezra be able to move past all of their hurdles and become a full-fledged couple again? Although Harding joked that he is "surprised Aria is not in a mental institution" from all the lies she had to endure, the star is optimistic about the couple's future together.

"They're going to have to clearly like regain trust, but I don't think it's the end. Emphasis on 'think,'" the actor stressed. "I think the love that they have is just so insanely strong, and it's why such a cerebral, intellectual guy as Ezra decided to say, 'No, screw you law enforcement, I'm gonna go for this.' I don't think that can just simply end because I think Ezra is a good person. He's just driven by this obsession."

Echoing her onscreen beau's sentiments, Hale agrees that Aria and Ezra have the potential to rekindle their romance. "I feel like Aria's a hopeless romantic," she smiled. "I want to say that hopefully she'll come around and be with him, but at the end of season four, things are up in the air. It's almost like how much more can they take, you know? So I don't know. If she's strong enough to get back with him, I would hope so, but we'll see." Sounds like things are looking up, Ezria fans!

Season five of Pretty Little Liars will premiere Tuesday, June 10, on ABC Family.

Leighton covers Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" with friend and musician Dana Williams:

Even though we'll always know and love Leighton Meester for her role as Blair on Gossip Girl, as anyone who's seen Country Strong can tell you, this girl can sing. The actress first showed off her vocal chops in the 2010 drama, and now she's at it again with her friend Dana Williams. Meester has teamed up with Williams on a cover of Fleetwood Mac's '70s classic "Dreams," and the result is exactly as pretty as you'd expect. So watch the video and buy Dana Williams' new EP The Lonely One here.

The Pretty Reckless breaks into Billboard's Top Five with sophomore album

"Going To Hell", the second album from THE PRETTY RECKLESS, the band led by actress-turned-singer Taylor Momsen, sold 35,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 5 on The Billboard 200 chart. The record arrived in stores on March 18 via Razor & Tie.

"Going To Hell" far outperforms the band's 2011 debut album "Light Me Up" (via Interscope), which debuted at No. 65 on The Billboard 200, selling 8,700 in the first week.

Razor & Tie co-owners Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam comment: "We are beyond thrilled by THE PRETTY RECKLESS' chart success and huge start at radio.

"Taylor is a rock star and we need more of those. We will be supporting this record for the rest of the year and beyond. This is just the beginning."

Manager David Sonenberg of DAS Communications adds: It's extremely gratifying to see THE PRETTY RECKLESS at #5 on the album charts and #1 on the rock charts. A lot of hard work from everyone involved and well deserved success for Taylor and the band."

According to The Pulse Of Radio, THE PRETTY RECKLESS has become the second female-fronted act in the last three years to hit No. 1 on the rock radio chart. The band's new single, "Heaven Knows", hit the top of the survey last week, allowing THE PRETTY RECKLESS to join the Lzzy Hale-fronted HALESTORM as part of a small and very select list of chart-topping rock acts fronted by women.

Momsen began her career as an actress when she was a child before becoming a full-time musician years later. She told The Pulse Of Radio that her family always knew this was what she really wanted to do. "They knew that music was always where I was headed, and what my — that was my passion and my goal," she said. "I mean, acting was a day job, essentially, while I worked on writing a record's worth of material that I wanted people to hear, and finding the right people to work with and the right band and all that. So they weren't surprised when I jumped ship."

The video for "Heaven Knows", in which Momsen appears semi-nude, has gotten more than 2.7 million views on VEVO.

THE PRETTY RECKLESS is currently supporting FALL OUT BOY on tour in Europe and will return to the U.S. next month for an appearance at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards on April 23 in Los Angeles.

The band is also confirmed to perform at all of the major U.S. rock festivals, including Rock On the Range, Rocklahoma, Fort Rock, Welcome To Rockville, Rock Fest Kansas City and others.

Pia Mia Kanye's New Muse, Kim who?

Kim Kardashian‘s dream came true this week when Vogue released the cover image of her posing in a wedding dress withKanye West. But behind the scenes, the couple’s reality is far from picture perfect. RadarOnline.com has learned that though they insist they’re more in love than ever in the weeks before their wedding, West’s relationship with his hot young protege,Pia Mia, has been raising eyebrows — and Kardashian is “jealous”!

West and the stunning songstress have been working on music together under his GOODMUSIC production company for the past few months. “Kanye is producing some tracks for her and he’s quite involved,” a source in his camp tells Radar exclusively. “He believes she could be the next Rihanna.”

Pia, born Pia Ajdba Mia Perez, is only seventeen and “Kanye has made it clear to everyone that their relationship is strictly creative,” the insider says. But as they’ve grown closer, and the teen has become one of his trusted advisors, their relationship has raised eyebrows.

One source who worked with the singer on a shoot in L.A. earlier this month tells Radar, “Kanye called her and the conversation sounded kind of flirty and romantic. It could be that they are just good friends but it was definitely more than just a professional call.”

In fact, the insider close to West tells Radar that he sees her as the key to keeping himself relevant and growing his career.

“Kanye thinks she’s young, fresh and hip — totally his target audience,” the insider says. “He’s been consulting her on a lot of his creative projects, including the Kanye x APC collection.”

Revealed: 35 Secrets The Kardashians Want Hidden

When those around him found out, the source says, “Kanye’s creative team was pretty shocked that he would use a teenager as his confidante. And Kim was actually kind of agitated by it, because he doesn’t usually want her input on design stuff. She was a little jealous.”

Indeed, fans of Keeping Up with the Kardashiansmight recall an episode based on Kardashian’s jealousy of younger sister Kylie Jenner‘s seemingly effortless style. Mia is friends with Kardashian’s half-sister as well, and Kardashian even posted a keek video of them all hanging out last year.

“Kanye sometimes brings Kendalland Kylie along when he hangs out with Pia so he can pick all their brains,” the source explains. “He wants to tap into the voice of the hip generation, but it’s definitely a little weird.”

Matthew McConaughey holds hands with his mother as they jet into LAX following brief trip to Rome

She was his date for the Academy Awards, alongside his wife Camila Alves, when he picked up the Best Oscar statue earlier this month.

And Matthew McConaughey has been keeping his number one fan, ie his mother Mary Kathlene (Kay) McCabe, close by as she joined him in Rome earlier this week while he was shooting a commercial.

The duo then travelled back to LA together and on Tuesday the 44-year-old actor was seen clutching his mother’s hand as they made their way through LAX after their transatlantic flight.

According to the New York Post's Page Six, Matthew and his mom enjoyed dinner at Antica Pesa restaurant in Rome on Monday night.

The pair stayed until 1am with Matthew making sure to stop by the kitchen to thank the owners, brothers Francesco and Simone Panella, afterwards.

A source told the paper: 'They looked adorable. His love for his mom was evident, and he treated her like a queen.

'You can tell he is such a southern gentleman, and they looked happy to be spending time together.'

His wife Camila, who was by his side during awards season, remained in America while he flew to Rome to shoot the commercial.

Matthew was casually dressed for his flight in a pair of light grey jeans, a black T-shirt, brown boots, a heavy coat and a beanie.

He wore large bright sunglasses despite landing after the sun had gone down.

His mother was casual but stylish in jeans, a red top and a white coat.

Family is important to Matthew as he proved in his rambling Oscars acceptance speech in which he thanked his family, his future self and his late father, who died when the actor was just 23.

The tribute to his father was deeply touching. 'Big Jim' McConaughey, a former college football star turned gas-station owner died in 1992, before ever getting the chance to see his son achieve worldwide fame.

After thanking God for 'gracing' him with opportunities, a jubilant McConaughey said: 'To my father who I know is up there right now with a big pot of gumbo, he has a big lemon meringue pie over there.

'He's probably in his underwear and has a big can of Miller Lite and he's dancing right now. To you dad, you taught me how to be a man.'

James McConaughey was a gas-station owner who ran an oil pipe supply business and once was signed to the Green Bay Packers. In the 1953 NFL Draft, Jim McConaughey was selected in the 27th round, the 319th overall pick, by Green Bay.

He divorced and remarried Matthew's mother, Kay, three times.

Nick Cannon defends whiteface makeup

$

Singer-actor and "America's Got Talent" host Nick Cannon is defending his decision to promote his new album by putting on whiteface makeup and assuming the identity of a Caucasian man.

"It's official . . . I'm White!" Cannon, 33, tweeted in support of his upcoming album "White People Party Music," linking to an Instagram image of himself in whiteface with light-brown hair and a gray and beige flannel shirt over a white T-shirt.

Hours earlier he had told Us Weekly, "You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album Purple People Party Music and you'd still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?"

The stunt created controversy, with Arienne Thompson, the African-American host of USA Today's online "Daily Dish" webcast, calling it "not funny at all" and "horrible. Whiteface, blackface -- none of that is ever funny." Vanity Fair titled its weekly celebrity-Instagram roundup "Nick Cannon Tries on White Face, the World Cringes." E! tweeted, "Nick Cannon in whiteface . . . we have no words."

"Damn, I didn't know it was going to be this hard being White! I'm exhausted with all this 'privilege' LOL #WhitePeopleProblems," Cannon later tweeted. Mimicking a critic, he wrote, " 'I think we should have a million white man march and protest @NickCannon album!! Somebody call @rushlimbaugh' LOL. I love this conversation though. It's showing a lot of people's true colors . . . #punintended."

Kourtney Kardashian on Attachment Parenting: "I'm Sure All the Family Thinks I'm Insane"

$

Kourtney Kardashian is a very hands-on mom. As a proponent of the somewhat controversial attachment-parenting philosophy, the reality star and mom of two, 34, lets son Mason, 4, and daughter Penelope, 19 months, sleep in a bed with her and boyfriend Scott Disick.

"It's what came naturally to me; I didn't plan it," she says in the April issue of Redbook magazine. "When I had Mason, I just felt really attached to him and wanted to bring him everywhere. He ended up sleeping with me, and I breastfed for 14 months."

"They go to sleep in their rooms but end up in my bed, sometimes within minutes," she explains, adding that it can be a "challenge" to find time alone with Disick. "It's...something we talk about constantly," she shares. "Mostly there are times each night when the kids are in their own rooms, and sometimes it even lasts all night. Every night is different."

Speaking about her parenting style at a Kardashian Kids collection event at New York City's SoHo House on Monday, March 24, Kardashian said her approach is different than her mom's.

"I mean, I have no idea where it came from because I definitely didn't sleep with my parents unless I was sick or something. I don't know, it just kind of grew," she explained. "I wasn't reading attachment parenting books before; it's just what came naturally to me. I think even with different kids, it's different. Each kid needs something different."

She added: "I'm sure all the family thinks I'm insane for having them in the bed and breastfeeding for a long time, but whatever."

Asked whether she'd consider adding another little baby to her brood (and bed!), the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star replied, "I mean, I don't know, I'm so busy right now...I always feel like it's in God's hands, so we'll see, but I love tiny clothes. They're the cutest things in the world and it does make me sad when they get bigger."

'Belle' Director Amma Asante on Feminism, Race, and Telling an UnCinderella Story

$
0
0

When Belle hits theaters May 2, you'll not only be dazzled by its gorgeous star, newcomer Gugu Mbatha-Raw, but by the woman behind the camera as well: Britain’s Amma Asante. The former child actress and writer for the British television drama Brothers and Sisters won a BAFTA for her feature directing debut, 2004’s A Way of Life, and a slew of other awards. But with the release of Belle, reviewed in our April issue, Asante is likely to become a hot commodity on this side of the Atlantic, too. We sat down with the director (who’s as feisty and steel-willed as her protagonist) and talked shop about women in the film industry—and the little-known story (in America) of Dido, Belle's protagonist—the child of an English admiral and African slave who became a society belle in 18th-century England, and lived in the home of her illustrious paternal grandfather, the Earl of Mansfield, England’s Lord Chief Justice at the time.

"I was completely obsessed with 18th-century England—and I was also obsessed just generally in where we, as people of color, fit into European history," Asante says of her motivation to make the film. Below, the director discusses the importance of indie films, tackling this unCinderella story, and how the movie hits home for her. Beware, for those who don't know the true story behind the film, there are some spoilers ahead.

There’s a line in 'Belle' where Dido says, “I don’t know that I find myself anywhere."

As women, haven’t we all been there at some point—where we just don’t know where we find ourselves? We don’t know where to look and find that reflection of who we truly are. For me, Belle is a movie about instinct versus conditioning. Every character, including Dido and quite clearly Lord Mansfield, has to battle that conflict in themselves. But this is also a story which begs the question, “Who defines us—society or us?” If I say, “I’m an amazing director,” and society and the critics say, “No, you’re not,” what does that mean to my chances if I have the drive in myself to be successful? If Dido is a black woman who speaks like a lady, walks like a lady, talks like a lady but doesn't look like one we’ve seen before, and society says, “No, you’re not,’” does that mean she isn't a lady? And if all of society says, “You are a lady,” and she doesn’t feel like one because she feels like a child of a slave—what is the most important? That’s the question I feel like I’m trying to negotiate throughout the entire film.

'Belle' is a story about race that I haven’t seen before. I had never heard of the real Dido, who is famous in British history. Did she and her future husband (the lawyer John Davinier, played by Sam Reid) continue to be a force in politics?

Not really. They got married and had sons, but they didn’t marry until Lord Mansfield (played by Tom Wilkinson) died. We can never be sure that Dido felt she couldn’t leave Kenwood, the Mansfield manor house, until he died. It was very important to leave the film on a triumphant note—Lord Mansfield’s stunning judicial blow against slavery. That’s what happened in real life, so there was a real sense of commitment, loyalty, and love on her part. That’s what brought me to the movie.

Tell me about your first film.

It was called A Way of Life. You’ll need subtitles because the teenagers in it have really strong Welsh accents. But that film was very different from Belle on the surface. At the time, there were a lot of crimes happening in the UK that were led by girls, but with boy-gangs, and they were ending in murder. I essentially ended up telling a story—based in fact—about a young girl who, with a group of boys in South Wales, kicked her Turkish neighbor to death. I wasn’t interested in the headline. I was more interested in the story behind it. Who were these people, what was the world they came from? I started to do my research and became really fascinated with the role of female identity—what it means to be a young woman.

For women working in the film industry, the indie numbers are much more palatable than those in the big studios. Is the situation in Britain the same?

In England it’s pretty similar. What I can tell you is that audiences are hungry to see different points of view. We all know that if you give the same script to two different directors, you get two different movies. The fact that there’s not the greatest chance for women to tell stories through a lens only damages society. It does nothing for people to restrict the variety in which stories can be told.

In 'Belle' you also tackle the infamous Zong massacre, about a British ship in which 143 slaves were ruthlessly thrown overboard for the insurance money.

My dad died the night before we shot those scenes, so that father-daughter element of the story was so important for me to get right, and so important that we understand that this wasn’t just a moment for the larger story. It was also important for the personal story, the relationship between this unexpected daughter and a kind of paternal figure that we’ve never seen on film or TV. We’ve never seen a white guy love a black child in this way on screen before. And it’s not a slave owner/slave scenario. Lord and Lady Mansfield (Emily Morton) had no children, so it’s a proper paternal relationship in which he adores and loves her as his own child—just as they love and adore Elizabeth (Belle’s white cousin, played by Sarah Gadon, who was also brought up in the Mansfield household) as well. For me, it was really important that we do not see this as a Cinderella fable. This isn't a rags-to-riches story in that way. Dido’s development, her coming of age and going from girl to woman, and her political awakening with John Davinier, parallels the story of the Zong.

I was struck by the way you directed 'Belle', interweaving two hot subjects at the same time—race and money. Quite recently there was a story in 'The New York Times' about how aristocratic English daughters don’t inherit anything, unless the male heir decides to throw his sister a bone, and even now they don’t always. So in 'Belle', we see an 18th century meat market, with young women hoping to find a tolerable man to marry. The only way a woman could choose a partner for love is to have money of her own. This was the case of Dido, who chose an educated commoner and turned society on its head.

In her own journey Dido has to come to terms with who she is as a woman, who she is as a biracial woman, who she is as the child of a slave she never had a chance to know and an aristocratic family who against all odds wanted her to be safe and thrive. You know, someone who is half-black and half-white is half of many things: a wealthy woman in a complex society where nobody looks like her, and most difficult, not to have her seeming to be asking for more, when actually what she’s asking for is equality.

She appears in a multitude of sex scenes in her Showtime series Masters Of Sex.

And Lizzy Caplan showed she isn't shy when she is off set either, arriving at a charity event on Wednesday in an eye-catching lace jumpsuit.

The 31-year-old actress showed off her curvy figure in the ensemble which looked nearly see-through under the flashbulbs at the Beverly Hilton, Los Angeles.

The actress teamed her all-in-one outfit with orange, black and white heels and a clutch bag, while smoky eye make-up and a casual loose hair style completed the look.

Caplan was lending her support to the A Night at Sardis event in aid of the Alzheimer's Association.

She was joined by a smattering of celebrities at the event with Kaley Cuoco and her Big Bang Theory castmates Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik also stepping out on the carpet.

Lizzy plays half of the pioneering sex research team of Masters & Johnson on the Showtime series with Michael Sheen portraying Dr. William Masters.

They were the couple who ‘taught America how to love’ and yet their relationship was possibly more complicated than the ones they helped to revive.

Masters and Johnson are credited with transforming the arena of sex research, though when they met in 1957, the point at which the series begins, they couldn’t have made a more unusual pairing.

Over ten years after teaming up for A Beautiful Mind, Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe walked the red carpet together again for the NYC premiere of Noah (26 March). Jennifer wore a customised Louis Vuitton dress by her long-time friend Nicolas Ghesquiere, and had fun on the red carpet with Crowe and husband Paul Bettany.

The rest of the cast - including Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth - was present at the premiere, along with less likely attendees such as 50 Cent and Ian Somerhalder.

Psych Series Finale Review

When Shawn sat down in front of the camera, Real World-confessional style, your first reaction might've been to roll your eyes and expect some kind of game. Perhaps you wondered if it might be another cinéma vérité gimmick or some non-diegetic storytelling to fit everything the show wanted to say into an overstuffed series finale. After all, visions of the compact, rushed, and disappointing endings that befell shows like Pushing Daisies still make your heart ache, and Psych never did anything to deserve that kind of treatment. Why? Why would you do this to us, show?

But once you'd finished watching "The Break-Up," you likely realized that its opening scene was something different. Shawn staring into the camera was actually refreshing, specifically because it wasn't a storytelling gimmick. Psych has always been a series that's given itself over to the event episode, the musical, the aping of any given cinematic genre, the pop-culture-will-eat-itself parodies, to the point that you may've expected it to go big and bold in order to find its exit. But "The Break-Up" started off with Shawn talking into a camera, in the most the dressed-down way possible. Even the Psych office behind him was barebones. And that's how he not only began the break-up with Gus, but with all of us, too.

Going into Season 8, series creator Steve Franks knew the writing was on the wall. The ten-episode run felt less like just another season in the current cable landscape and more like Chuck and its mini consolation season that NBC ordered so the rabid fans wouldn't throw poo into its eyes for cutting them off so hastily.Psych got back to basics in Season 8, to the heart of what the show was about when it first started: Shawn and his arrested development. The pilot was full of people telling Shawn he had to grow up, that he was an irresponsible flake. After a number of false starts and baby steps for Shawn to move forward throughout the series, this season took a hard look at how far he's come—and then started to foster an environment that was conducive to Shawn him taking greater strides (or untenable for his continuing adolescence).

Season 8 made sure, firstly, that Santa Barbara no longer needed the cofounders of Psych. Shawn and Gus's social network was systematically dismantled. Lassie, though more of a tertiary support, saw his family and career abate his infrequent neediness. Henry moved, both from Shawn's childhood home and just basically forward with a life that'd basically stagnated. The SBPD even brought in Brannigan (Mira Sorvino), who was everything Shawn was but with an added enthusiasm for police work and no supernatural pretense. Jules was the last piece and, with her removed to San Francisco, all that was left for Shawn and Gus to do was to look at their inside feelings.

And I still contend that, antithetical as "A Nightmare on State Street" was to the overall look and feel of the show, it was still a decent representation of the headspace of someone as tightly wound as Gus while dealing with a complete breakdown of his sense of security—including the loss of the best friend who'd completely derailed his life. So suck it.

"The Break-Up," however, was a return to form not just for the season, but for the series. The episode itself was about everything that made us fall in love with Shawn in the first place. Instead of showcasing the more cartoonish version we've grown accustomed to, the episode presented a character who'd actually progressed beyond the guy who used to pick up waitresses and dial the SBPD tip line whilst macking. The pop culture references were limited, and the case was sound (unlike last week's, which was, admittedly, weak sauce). "The Break-Up" definitely focused on what was important. But then it was also an episode turned on its head, because Brannigan was always one step ahead of Team Psych. That wasn't necessarily new territory for Psych (think back to the fake psychic in "Psy vs. Psy," or Nestor Carbonell's profiler in his Season 5 arc) but it marked the first time that someone offered any kind of permanent threat to their way of life. Bianca and Declan were transient, but Brannigan was a head detective. The writing was on the wall, and despite a fun caper featuring none other than the oft-mentioned Billy Zane (who was just as suave as Shawn had always off-handedly said he was), there wasn't much left to say other than goodbye.

After laughing along with them (Gus shrieking out of the pit with the body in it!), getting some closure on inside jokes (the car Shawn stole that his dad arrested him for was the drivers ed car from their high school!), and enjoying one last job, it was time for a commercial break and then we transitioned very quickly to the sum-uppy parts. Woody is the same, and we can assume that Henry has found a new phase of his career in bringing criminology back to the classroom, so we don't have to worry about them. Shawn sent videos to them (on DVD? Just send a Dropbox link, man!) but we barely saw anything special in them. The two important ones were to Lassiter and Gus.

Lassie's was heartwarming only because the answer that he probably always wanted when Shawn was around—for Shawn to admit he's a fake—was handed to him. But instead of getting that answer, Lassie ejected the disc and smashed it. Tears. Then McNab got to be junior detective. More tears. Then Lassie called his wife to coo at his new child. Weird but acceptable.

Clearly the most emotional clip, the one for which the episode was named, was the one for Gus. While all the others might've been passed off as personal videos for people to whom Shawn wouldn't've had time to say goodbye, the one for Gus existed only because Shawn can't "engage" and is bad at the "real stuff"—all things we know about Shawn, the basic thesis of his being. Most of Shawn's interactions would've been less complicated and troublesome if he was capable of honestly expressing himself face-to-face. But instead he's a more charismatic version of Abed from Community, a savant of pop culture who hides behind that veneer of media and quips so he doesn't have to do the grown-up things he's sworn never to do.

Even though he was speaking to Gus specifically about changing Gus's trajectory in life, about being the bad thing that brought Gus to ruin, he was breaking up with us, too. Just as Gus is Shawn's best friend, the fans are Psych's best friend. The quick turnaround that made "The Break-Up" a series finale instead of a season finale seemed just as sudden as Shawn's decision to leave Santa Barbara. So he said farewell to us. Except we don't really have the option of following Shawn and Gus to San Francisco to watch them compete with Monk for a consultant gig. Although I suppose we can watch back episodes of that Bad News Bears show Maggie Lawson was on and pretend.

It was probably a good thing that Psych didn't attempt a big, splashy finale. The dressed-down version was the perfect way to end this series, to bookend what Psych was always about: relationships between characters and a boy growing up. I'll slow clap you on the way out. Because I'm proud of you. Thanks for everything.

NOTES

The elusive Dobson was Val Kilmer. Eight years of Lassiter saying hello to Dobson, calling for Dobson, referring to Dobson, and it's Iceman. Brilliant.

– Gus's new job was shoehorned in, but it gave us a really funny, very Gus epilogue, so I'll allow it.

– Lassie showing his paternal instincts (both with Shawn's "who's my big boy" hug and the call to his daughter) was... unsettling.

The proposal to Juliet was apt, very pretty ("I will marry the crap out of you, Shawn Spencer"), verbose, and so, so sweet (almost saccharine). But who goes around stealing rings from people who are proposing? And it was a team (the thief got into the backseat of the car) on top of that? What was their next job going to be, finding babies with candy?

The kid in the criminology class was everything that is wrong with America.lol

– Billy Zane can do anything he wants to and still be the coolest guy in the room. I didn't even recognize that it was Zane until the high school scene. And you don't see him trying to be all sophisticated by changing his name to William. Right, BILLY Zabka?

I freaking love that show and am so sad that it ended, but it was for the best.

First Kings of the World Bayern Munich, now Arsenal.
Parched soccer fans of America rejoice!!!

On Thursday, the New York Red Bulls announced that they will face English Premier League club Arsenal FC on Saturday, July 26, at Red Bull Arena (5 pm ET). The match pits current New York captain and legendary Arsenal forward Henry against the club where he scored a record 226 goals in all competitions

The game will be Arsenal's only match on their visit to the United States. The Arsenal first team last visited the United States for an exhibition match with Independiente of Argentina in Miami, Florida in 1989. It will be Arsenal’s second encounter with the Red Bulls in three years, following a 1-1 draw at the 2011 Emirates Cup.

"The fact that Thierry is the New York Red Bulls’ club captain makes this a particularly special fixture, and everyone involved with the club is looking forward to it.”

20+ new Images from TRANSCENDENCE

Warner Bros. has released a batch of high-resolution images from Wally Pfister’s upcoming directorial debut Transcendence. The film revolves around a group of scientists trying to build the first self-aware supercomputer, and when lead researcher Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) becomes the target of anti-technology extremists, he unexpectedly becomes a participant in his own transcendence. Pfister has done excellent work as a cinematographer in recent years with films like The Dark Knight, Inception, and Moneyball, but I’m eager to see how he fares in the director’s chair. The marketing materials have promised that Transcendence is a smart, sci-fi-tinged thriller, and so far this looks to be a strong debut feature from Pfister.

Transcendence opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on April 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Transcendence:

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
