Did Leonardo DiCaprio's Academy Award Win Just Leak?

$

Wait a second, guys—did CNN just accidentally give away the winner of this year's Best Actor Academy Award? It certainly looks that way at first glance: During a story about the factory that makes the Oscars, RS Owens, the news network aired an image of someone holding a nameplate announcing none other than always-a-nominee-never-a-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who this year is nominated for his role as Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street. Does this mean DiCaprio is the official winner?

Not exactly. First off, voting for the winners hasn't yet concluded—according to the official Oscars website, it won't end until Feb. 25, just a few days before the ceremony on March 8. Secondly, according to this post from The Guardian, RS Owens has been making winning nameplates for every nominee in advance since 2010, to shorten the waiting time between winners receiving their statue and winners receiving the actual nameplate for the statue that states their name, winning category, and project. In other words: Every single nominee has one of these made for them, in the event that they do win the award. Just because this nameplate exists, it doesn't mean that DiCaprio will take home the coveted award next month.

Sorry, Leo.

"The Walking Dead" pranks New York pedestrians

Walkers on the streets of New York recently fended off walkers from "The Walking Dead".

As part of a guerrilla marketing promotion, actors were made up to look like zombies from the hit AMC series and placed below a grate in Manhattan's Union Square.

Unknowing pedestrians who stepped near or above the grate were met with zombified hands and arms reaching up from the ground below them.

"The Walking Dead" isn't the first TV series to use unorthodox street campaigns to try and scare up viewers, although things can go wrong when the public fails to get the gimmick.

In 2007, LED lights scattered throughout Boston, designed to spread the word about Cartoon Network's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," unintentionally set off a very real city-wide bomb scare. Turner Broadcasting Systems, which owns the Cartoon Network, was ordered to pay a hefty $2 million fine because of the chaos caused by the promotion.

But it looks as though no one saw this latest marketing stunt as a sign of the zombie-apocalypse, although more than a few passersby initially screamed at the sight of the walkers before quickly laughing off the prank. Others just stared in confusion, as can be seen in the video.

For Books’ Sake talks to: Janet Mock

$

Since sharing her story of growing up as a young trans girl in Marie Claire, Janet Mock has fought for the rights of trans women like herself to define their own stories.

It’s a truth she will passionately defend, as illustrated by her calling out Piers Morgan’s misguided interview attempt on CNN. She launched the hashtag #girlslikeus to encourage young trans women to discuss their shared experiences and now her groundbreaking memoir is about to take the UK by storm.

For Books’ Sake: From Redefining Realness, it seems that love – whether platonic or romantic – is at the centre of your work.

Janet Mock: I think love is something that I’ve always obsessed over growing up and it’s not an obsession I’ve gotten over. So I think it’s very much inherent, whether it’s in the podcasts, where it’s me and Aaron literally talking about that first year of my life, when I had been outed as a trans woman, and him standing besides me. He was very much pivotal in me doing that, having that affirmation from someone who perceived me as not less than, but as the greatest woman alive to him. And I never thought I’d had that, right?

Growing up as trans* is not something that you, yourself, take pride in and definitely not something that a man would see as a plus, or a positive thing, in a relationship. So I think that, having experienced that kind of love, I wanted to show young women that we are not just a tragedy, that we can have fulfilling partnerships and relationships and the quest towards that can be transformative, if you find the right partner who can go on that journey with you. So yes, I am very obsessed with love! This book for me was like a shattering down of this image that the media had made of me: ‘Janet Mock’, the black trans woman of colour who made it out.

FBS: One of things that struck me in your memoir was your honesty and your bravery as a survivor. Survivors of abuse often feel pressure to omit parts of their history. Did you feel you had to project a perfect life story to avoid being pathologised as being trans*?

J: I think one of the first things I learnt in terms of abuse, and dealing with sexual assault, is that I needed to be quiet about it and I kept that a secret. And, in turn, I kept a lot of things in my life, the bad things in my life, the traumatic things in my life, secret. I kept myself and my identity a secret. These are all things I learned. And having to unpack that, the memoir, the process of writing, really helped me to reflect on the things that were done to my body and to me, how I learned these behaviours and actions of silence.

And then sitting in that space alone, and transforming silence into something else, as Audre Lorde said, when we transform silence we become even more powerful. The things we thought would hold us down. Things that we thought people would judge us about, that we would judge ourselves about; it’s the sense of releasing all of that shame, so the story telling process has been a work in progress. I’m still a work in progress and I still have issues around all of these things. To be able to share that and know that there are other young women out there who have gone through these things, hopefully it will make them feel more comfortable about speaking up about that.

FBS: I think that’s so powerful, and I think that means a lot to so many people, so thank you for that.

J: Well, it was very scary to do so. You know, this book for me was like a shattering down of this image that the media had made of me: ‘Janet Mock’, the black trans woman of colour who made it out. There is a success story out there and it’s hard combating that media machine, because American media loves to build up heroes that they can then tear down.

So, instead of letting the media tear me down, I chose, instead, to be raw and honest in my experience so I am seen as a full person and a fully authentic self. I think that’s why I wanted to name it Redefining Realness – because that’s what authenticity is to me. Standing in my own truth, my own trauma, in my own triumphs as well. And so that was the purpose of that book, but it was a very scary, daunting process.

FBS: Were you under pressure to achieve?

J: I felt that I needed to be overeducated, I needed to be über accomplished, so I worked at People Magazine, I got a Masters degree from New York University, I worked at one of the top publications in America. I felt like I had to over accomplish and over extend in order to get the minimal amount of attention. I had to be the right kind of trans woman: articulate, educated, all of these things. So I decided to say, ‘I will not go by the politics of respectability and instead make space for the erotic in my book, space to talk about sex work, I will talk unapologetically about trans women of color in my book and trans sisterhood and trans womanhood.’ And all of these things that we’re told don’t exist or people just to choose to ignore.

FBS: Representations of trans* people seem be either totally detached, such as queer theory and academia, or they’re creepily involved, exposing every intimate detail. Do you see the memoir as an antidote to these models or perhaps a balance between the two?

J: [Trans* memoirs are] an apolitical tradition, so people don’t normally talk about anything beyond themselves. It’s quite a navel gazing genre. And so I chose to navel gaze a little bit but also contextualize my personal experiences in a broader light, in a broader framework. And say: yes I did sex work, but this is how it looks for all of us. So you can see the political nature and the systems of oppression that push trans women, specifically poor trans women, specifically poor trans women of color, into sex work.

And so that was my purpose with it, to shed light, a bright light, into the stories of other women who did not have the same concessions that I had. I had a scholarship to college, I had a home. I wasn’t on the streets trying to make money for rent. I was on the street trying to make money for transition surgery, which is insurmountable too, but I needed to be aware of that. And for me I also wanted a book that was accessible to trans women, young trans girls and women and feel like they could speak with more language and understanding with where they’re at in their lives, why they’ve gone through what they’ve gone through, what that looks like and how I made it through.

And at the same time I want it to be accessible to cis women, who may just like my hair and have been following me for a few years because of my curly hair and now they’re interested in reading my story. And by reading my story they’re getting the stories of a lot of marginalized trans women, and they can see the connections between cis womanhood and trans womanhood, and just womanhood in general. So I wanted a book that was educational and affirming and political. Our bodies are political bodies. They’re bodies that literally have to petition the state to be reflected in our own self. So I wanted to shed light on that without diminishing the personal struggle that I went through. I do hope it’s a balance between the two.

FBS: You’ve done so much already, but have you got any other creative goals?

J: I think for me, I know now that I want to write more books. I don’t know what the idea for those next books are. I do think that one of them would be about my young womanhood because Redefining Realness is very much about my girlhood. But it’s not so much about what it was like for me to live as a woman, where most people took me as a cisgender woman of colour. They didn’t see me as a trans woman. So, really exploring the years from 2001 or so until coming out publicly. I don’t really explore those things in the book and that really needs to be another book, because I still need time to reflect on that.

Beyond that, I want to do more media work. I would love to create a sitcom or a dramedy or something and being a show runner, telling our stories in a different kind of way. Creating culture, creating pop culture, I would love to go into that too. But these are just things that are floating around in my head. One day I would [love] to create a camp for trans girls, that would be amazing. That would be the legacy work I’d love to do, bringing a bunch of trans women and trans girls and share a week, or a weekend, in the summer together.

Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More is released in the UK on 20th March and is available for preorder now. For US fans, order here.

'They grew apart and wanted different things': Max George 'dumps Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal

Max George and Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal have reportedly split after just a few months of dating.

Max, 25 - who met Nina when they both starred in a Buffalo fashion campaign over a year ago - is believed to have ended the relationship near the time his band The Wanted confirmed their split.

A source told the Sun On Sunday: 'They just wanted different things out of the relationship and had grown slightly apart.'

'It was hard for Max to dump Nina so soon after news broke that The Wanted are breaking up,' the source added: ''But he is being optimistic. He is looking at it all as an opportunity for a fresh start. He's not one to get down in the dumps about things.'

In October Max gushed about Nina in an interview with OK magazine, where he revealed they were friends for six months before things turned romantic.

‘She makes me laugh, She’s so funny and daft. She’s not at all high-maintenance – she just likes to have fun,’ he said. She’s just a mate and obviously, yes, she’s absolutely stunning.

‘She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. She lights up the place and everyone loves her – all the boys, our security guard and our tour manager.’

But now the news of the split comes as no surprise as just last week Nina, 21, was spotted leaving a club in New York with Leonardo DiCaprio.

The pair were partying at Club Avenue until the early hours of Monday morning after the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The Wolf Of Wall Street star and Sports Illustrated model were spotted walking from the venue one after the other before piling into the same car and speeding off together.

They did their best not to be seen in the vehicle as Leo ducked down, while just Nina’s legs were visible in the back of the car. Leonardo, 39, is also supposed to be dating 21-year-old Toni Garrn, so perhaps the actor was merely giving Nina a lift home. Toni was flying solo just a few days later at the opening night of the 65th annual Berlinale

Preview the Anna Wintour Costume Center's Inaugural Show

$
0
0

This morning, the Metropolitan Museum of Art offered a teaser of its upcoming show, Charles James: Beyond Fashion,
which will be the first to debut in the Anna Wintour Costume Center. The space, which up until recently was known as the Costume Institute, was recently renamed to honorVogue's editor-in-chief, one of its principle fundraisers. The new name also signifies a new look: When the Charles James show launches on May 8, the public will finally get to see the space's $40 million redesign.

Charles James, whose career lasted from 1926 to 1978, is known for his sculptural, sweeping ball gowns, which were influential for midcentury designers. (Christian Dior called him "The greatest talent of my generation.") With its emphasis on old-fashioned glamour, this is going to be a radically different—and probably more accessible—show than
Punk: Chaos to Couture, Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations, or even the museum's blockbuster Alexander McQueen exhibit.

But just because it's all about straightforwardly gorgeous dresses doesn't mean there's not an intellectual underpinning. The show's promotional materials use the word "science" repeatedly. The Met's director and CEO, Thomas P. Campbell, says James "approached fashion with a sculptor's eye and a scientist's logic," while curated Harold Koda describes his work as "a synthesis of dressmaking, art, math, and science." That makes him a fitting subject for the first show in a space that's just gotten a science-obsessed makeover. Among the new features of the Costume Center:

· The 4,200-square foot Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery, a black box space that can morph completely from exhibit to exhibit, and that will use technology to showcase dress construction and other se
nsory details.

· A new conservation lab outfitted with equipment like a wet lab, a fume extraction unit, and microscopes, as well as extra-wide doors to fit enormous gowns.

· An up-to-date new storage system for the Costume Institute's collection, which is the largest in the world. (NB: The space is now named after Anna, but the governing organization is still known as the Costume Institute.)

All of these changes represent some major growth for the Met's fashion wing, which was last renovated in 1992. Since then, for example, the staff has more than quadrupled. And Charles James is just the beginning—moving forward, the Costume Center plans to stage two or three exhibits every year.

BBC bans all-male panels on comedy shows such as QI and Mock the Week

Mock-The-Week-panel-3128314
The director of BBC Television has banned all-male panels on comedy shows from now on.

Danny Cohen said that it is “not acceptable” that women have not been present on shows like QI and Mock the Week.

The change follows long-running complaints about the ‘testosterone-fuelled’ nature of shows such as Mock The Week, which is loaded with male regulars with little scope for female guests.

“We’re not going to have panel shows on any more with no women on them,” Cohen said. “You can’t do that. It’s not acceptable.”

His comments come two months after the BBC Trust was reported to have told executives there was “no excuse” for not having more female panelists.

Mr Cohen also said the BBC needed to get more older women on screen.

“We’re getting better,” he told the Observer, citing the example of historian Mary Beard. “But we need to get better.”

In the past, comedy panel shows like QI, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You have been criticised for their male-dominated line-ups.

In the most recent series, all the regular comedians on the most recent series of Mock the Week were men and only five of the 38 guest panelists were women.

The BBC’s entertainment controller, Mark Linsey, said that such programmes would be improved by the mix of sexes. “I’m making it clear to production teams that there’s just no excuse for delivering all-male guest lists,” he said

A BBC spokesman said some panel shows that had been recorded but not yet been broadcast may feature all-male teams, but that all those filmed in the future would include at least one female participant.

“There may be very rare occasions where shows that were already recorded - or whose panels were already booked ahead of the order - still have all-male line-ups, but hopefully the change should really become apparent,” the spokesman said.

The news was met with praise from many female comedians and TV viewers.

Katy Brand, who had her own show on ITV said: “Finally! Thanks you Danny Cohen.”

Controversial comic Frankie Boyle said: “My crazy idea would be that you have 50% women on panel shows and 50% female comedy commissions.”

Kate Kinninmont, chief executive of Women in Film and Television, a group for women working in the industry, said last year that several of these shows had made progress: “People said for years there are no funny women and it was a struggle to get women on shows like Have I Got News for You. But that has improved, as has the number of women on Question Time.”

The move follows criticism from Victoria Wood, who has criticised such male dominated shows, and Jo Brand, who said she no longer considered appearing on Mock The Week.

However in 2012, writer Caitlin Moran said she had been asked to appear on “all the big panel shows” but turned them down because “I refuse to be the token woman”.

“I think that’s a boys’ game that works for boys,” she said. “It’s not like they built it to screw women over, it’s just that boys built it so they made it to work for boys. If I go on there as a token woman, it’s not going to work for me,” she said.

And Radio 4 DJ Libby Purves also questioned the move, saying yesterday: “Hmm. How often will the female be a decorative item, there to giggle at the chaps?”

Other people on Twitter described the move as “positive discrimination” and questioned if there were enough female stand up stars.

Jo Brand has previously highlighted a “practical problem” of supply and demand.

She said: “There are far more male comics than women. When I started, there were about 200 male stand-ups and about 20 female – roughly one woman for every two-and-a-half panel shows.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy trailer update

$

2014's Super Bowl was overshadowed by one thing. It wasn't Optimus Prime riding a dinosaur, the 'Seinfeld reunion or Seattle Seahawks' demolition of the Denver Broncos, instead it was the lack of a 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trailer.

Just over a week before the sporting spectacular, James Gunn confirmed that a trailer for his eagerly anticipated superhero epic wouldn't be ready in time.

Now, of course, many of us just assumed that he was actually lying, and that his disappointing announcement was a ruse that would ultimately make the trailer's premiere at Super Bowl XLVIII even more monumental.

Unfortunately, he was actually telling the truth. And instead we had to just make do with new footage for the 'Amazing Spider-Man 2,' 'Captain America: The Winter Solider' and 'Transformers: Age Of Extinction.' It was like asking Father Christmas for a bike, and then getting punched in the face by the Easter Bunny.

However, information has just been released that confirms that the first trailer for 'Guardians of the Galaxy' has been classified as PG-13, and that it will also have a running time of two minute and twenty-three seconds. It's likely that the feature film will follow the same classification as the trailer.

At the moment, we still haven't had an official date for the trailer, however, according to ComicBook.com, normally after it is classified it lands in cinemas just a week or two later.

Some fans had been wary that we might not get our first glimpse of the eclectic ensemble until 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier's' hits cinemas on April 4, but it now seems as though it could premiere either during the Olympics or the Oscars telecast.

However it's released, Gunn previously revealed on his Facebook page that Marvel and Disney have orchestrated a perfect promotional campaign for 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'

Gunn wrote, "Marvel and Disney have had a plan in place for a long time for the rollout of these characters in the biggest and best way possible, serving the widest audience as possible. Trust that they know what they're doing, as they've been through this a few times before. And please be patient."

Meanwhile, James Gunn's cat is only proving to be a hindrance as he attempts to complete the edit on time:

My cat is trying to help me edit. By sitting right in front of the screen. http://t.co/fuv946gf5I
- James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 9, 2014

Are you excited about 'Guardians of the Galaxy'? Or do you think it could be a Marvel flop?

Gregory Wakeman is a movie enthusiast whose favourite Marvel effort is Joss Whedon's 'The Avengers,' but who believes that 'Guardians of the Galaxy' will ultimately eclipse it.

Katy's widely (?) criticized performance of Yesterday at Beatles Tribute + More

The squirty-cream loving songstress took to the stage in a floral smock to perform the Liverpudlian band's classic hit - but it didn't go down well.

Fifty years to the day since The Beatles took to the stage for their first ever live U.S television performance, CBS honored the iconic pop band with a special live event.

Pop Princess Katy Perry was on of thr many acts involved.

The squirty-cream loving songstress took to the stage in a floral smock to perform the Liverpudlian band's classic hit, Yesterday.

But Beatle maniacs the world over were less than impressed by her emotional performance.

"Katy Perry was not paying tribute to the Beatles when she sang 'Yesterday' and changed the words to suit her whims & fancies. I'm offended," one fan tweeted.

"Listening to Katy Perry's performance of Yesterday. I'm not even a Beatles fan, but this is gross," said another.

"Katy Perry actually did a horrible job at singing Yesterday... Not impressed," another user wrote.

With a 3-1 gallop for 'Dark Horse,' Perry matches Rihanna's total of 11 No. 1s on the radio airplay chart.

Katy Perry matches Rihanna for the most No. 1s in the 21-year history of Billboard's top 40-based Pop Songs radio airplay chart, as "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, trots 3-1. The song marks Perry's 11th No. 1 on the ranking (which is fueled by Nielsen BDS monitored data), equaling Rihanna's sum. Rihanna had pulled ahead of Perry when Eminem's "The Monster," on which Rihanna is featured, began a five-week reign the week of Dec. 21.

P!nk ranks third with nine Pop Songs No. 1s, followed by Lady Gaga with seven. Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake share with fifth-place with six No. 1s apiece. (The Pop Songs chart launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992, after the career start of Carey, among others.)

Since arriving the week of May 31, 2008, with "I Kissed a Girl," Perry's record on Pop Songs has been nearly impeccable. While 11 of her 15 chart entries have reached No. 1, three others still peaked in the top 10: "Kissed" (No. 2), 2012's "Part of Me" (No. 3) and "Horse" predecessor single "Unconditionally" (No. 8). Of her chart visits as a lead act, only "Thinking of You" (No. 17, 2009) has fallen shy of the top 10.

"Horse" is the second Pop Songs No. 1 from Perry's Capitol Records album, "PRISM." Lead track "Roar" ruled for five weeks beginning in September. Aspreviously reported, programmer interest was so high in "Horse" that it debuted on Pop Songs the week of Dec. 21 prior to its release as a radio single (as "Unconditionally" was still scaling the chart). "Horse" had previously been released digitally as a "PRISM" preview track. "Katy's become one of the most consistent hit-makers for top 40, so the reality is once radio heard 'PRISM,' it reacted," Capitol Music Group executive VP Greg Thompson told Billboard in December. "The album is packed with singles."

"PRISM" topped the Nov. 9 Billboard 200 and has sold 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to the Pop Songs tally, both "Roar" and "Horse" have crowned the airplay/sales/streaming-based Billboard Hot 100, with the latter song having led the survey for two weeks running.

Get ready for a lot more dangerous nookie on your television. TLC has ordered an additional 35 episodes of its new series Sex Sent Me to the ER, whose title pretty much explains its premise. The first four episodes of the series averaged 1.9 million total viewers.

“Viewers will have no shortage of sexual mishaps to capture their attention as the breakout series has now been picked up for an additional 35 one-hour episodes,” TLC said in a release announcing the new episodes on Wednesday. “The series documents the real-life and often hilarious stories of what happens when passion turns to panic and leads to the ER.”

The next run of the series, which begins filming this month, will premiere in the second quarter of 2014, after a suitable refractory period.

The show premiered on TLC as a four-part series on December 28 and is currently airing in encores on Saturdays at 10:00 p.m. ET. Beginning episodes featured stories such as a 440 pound virgin who accidentally sent his girlfriend headfirst through a wall during his first time and a woman who went to the ER after experiencing a two-hour orgasm that wouldn’t stop.

TLC is currently casting couples (www.tlc.com/casting) with amusing and extraordinary stories where a sexual mishap led to an emergency room visit.
