James McAvoy about 'Glass' and The Future Of X-Men &'It: Chapter 2'

$
0
0

• The initial hint that Split was a sequel was a lot more subtle in the script and James did not get it.

• There was a dance sequence in Glass, in which he sang a bit of Drake, but it had to be cut because Drake asked for too much money.

• Apparently James doesn't really care about music: "I'm just not big on music at all. I know, it's like a failing. The only time I ever really feel like I rely on music is when I'm tidying in the house, and I generally play the same playlist by Jamiroquai. Which is pretty great for tidying." (wtf, dude??)

• They talk a lot about Star Trek. James also does a quick Ian McKellan/Gandalf impression.

• About X-Men: Dark Phoenix: "It's gone back to what I've always loved about the X-Men, which is that the bad guys aren't bad guys, the bad guys are your family. The bad guys are your best friend, the bad guys your brother, the bad guys are someone who you completely understand and empathise with, so it makes their conflict a lot more interesting."

• He doesn't know if the X-Men can fold into the MCU: “One of the beautiful thing about the X-Men, one of the things that always strikes me [...] is, it has a parallel with disenfranchised. With people that have been ghettoised, with ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, with any kind of person that mainstream society is scared of. And there are large amounts of, they get pushed down, pushed off to the side of society and that's what the mutants represent. They're not the same necessarily as the handful of heroes that are regarded as demi gods. [...]"

FICTION: The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

Release date: July 16

About: In this bravura follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller The Underground Railroad , Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.

As the Civil Rights movement begins to reach the black enclave of Frenchtown in segregated Tallahassee, Elwood Curtis takes the words of Dr. Martin Luther King to heart: He is "as good as anyone." Abandoned by his parents, but kept on the straight and narrow by his grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But for a black boy in the Jim Crow South in the early 1960s, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy the future. Elwood is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called The Nickel Academy, whose mission statement says it provides "physical, intellectual and moral training" so the delinquent boys in their charge can become "honorable and honest men."

In reality, The Nickel Academy is a grotesque chamber of horrors, where the sadistic staff beats and sexually abuses the students, corrupt officials and locals steal food and supplies, and any boy who resists is likely to disappear "out back." Stunned to find himself in such a vicious environment, Elwood tries to hold on to Dr. King's ringing assertion "Throw us in jail and we will still love you." His friend Turner thinks Elwood is worse than naive, that the world is crooked and the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

The tension between Elwood's ideals and Turner's skepticism leads to a decision whose repercussions will echo down the decades. Formed in the crucible of the evils Jim Crow wrought, the boys' fates will be determined by what they endured at The Nickel Academy.

Based on the real story of a reform school in Florida that operated for one hundred and eleven years and warped the lives of thousands of children, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven narrative that showcases a great American novelist writing at the height of his powers.

FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION: The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Release date: November 5

About: Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a strange book hidden in the library stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues — a bee, a key, and a sword — that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth.

What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians — it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose — in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

Jerry Media faces backlash for their complicity in Fyre and asking their followers to donate money

OP refuses to embed their Instagram account and direct any traffic to them.

By now, you’ve probably watched or at least heard of the two documentaries about the infamous Fyre Festival debacle that never occurred in 2017. There’s Hulu’sFyre Fraud and Netflix’sFyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. The latter was produced by Jerry Media, also known as the popular Instagram account, FuckJerry. Created by Elliot Tebele and with over 14 million followers, Jerry Media helped to promote and scam others out of money along with the mastermind behind it all, Billy McFarland. Last year, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison.

It’s been nothing but laughs and memes all over social media, including here on ONTD. “He scammed a bunch of rich kids! lmao.” A lot of us are guilty for making or agreeing with these comments. But now that these documentaries are out, the laughs have certainly stopped or at least aren’t as funny. The reality is, besides these annoying influencers and rich millennials who we think “got what they deserved,” there’s a whole community in the Bahamas we never fully considered and after these documentaries we see the lasting impact it had on them.

Hundreds of local people who worked under the beach sun day and night, and never got paid for their hard work. But one stood out in the Netflix version, Maryann Rolle, who lost her entire $50,000 life savings to pay her catering staff and community the money that was owed to them by Fyre and everyone else involved, including Jerry Media. After nearly two years, now they want to donate $10,000 to her, but FuckJerry wants their followers to make up the $40,000 difference and donate the rest on her GoFundMe page. 10K is chump change, and the sheer audacity for FuckJerry to ask their followers to pay for their own mistakes is truly something. Needless to say, their followers are seeing right through the bullshit and are rightfully calling their complicit asses out, and you can read some of them behind the cut. Including Ja Rule’s thoughts on all of this, a comrade no more.

ONTD, did you watch either of these documentaries?

During RuPaul’s Drag Race All Star’s 4, the featured a runway theme, “Curves and Swerves.” Manila Luzon wore a maxi-pad “period” piece, that RuPaul deemed, “in bad taste.” She requested Manila wear her back-up look for taping.

malinaluzonRu said my ORIGINAL Curves & Swerves Runway look was in “bad taste” and production told me to wear my back up.
I was really looking forward to wearing this gown that I think celebrates a perfectly normal human experience! Many of my fans are young women who may feel pressured by society to be embarrassed by periods. It’s empowering to teach young women about their bodies, encourage them to celebrate them AND to question people who tell them not to!
My goal with this look was to normalize menstruation by looking sick’ning even if I was on my period!
Instead, i decided to wear the beautiful quilted dress you saw in the episode because it is not my show, it’s Ru’s. But because of Ru, I have my very own platform to speak for myself and show you all my interpretation! ❤️

Suprised this didn’t get its own post.

Pete Davidson and John Mulaney really really loved the Clint Eastwood movie "The Mule" and wanted us to know it, as they joyfully ranted about it in this segment from SNL's Weekend Update.

They did address the elephant in the room. After Mulaney said he hangs out with Davidson to show that you can have a life in comedy that "is not insane", Pete joked that observing John's life led to his public suicide threat.

· TMZ reports that Lionel Richie's 24 y/o model son Miles was cautioned by UK police after threatening to detonate a bomb at Heathrow airport
· Witnesses said Miles became angry after he wasn't allowed to board a flight, saying he had a bomb & would detonate it if they didn't allow him on the plane. He was detained by police after punching a security guard who intervened, and was later released with a caution. (Per TMZ, accepting a caution just means the person takes responsibility for the offense. People who accept cautions aren't booked or charged with a crime & don't need to appear in court, but it goes on their permanent record)

If you loved the rivaling documentaries from Hulu and Netflix focusing on the Fyre Festival and the exploration into white collar crime and want to find some more? Below are the trailers for financial misdeeds. Check some of these out if you can and feel free to recommend more!

Dirty Money (Netflix): A six-episode miniseries that deals with some of the biggest financial cons in history including Volkswagen defeat device scams, PharmaBro, HSBC’s cartel and terrorism funding, the biggest theft of maple syrup ever and the corrupt financial ties belonging to the current president.

Betting on Zero (Netflix): A doc that looks into the hedge funder Bill Ackman’s investigation into the pyramid scheme Herbalife, the bullshit wellness company that made money from direct sales and how the company preyed on some of most vulnerable people in the country: low-income, Latino communities.

All the Queen's Horses (Netflix): Sis stole $53 million by her damn self to fund her My Little Pony dreams, meanwhile she left the small city get neglected and go to shit. Yes, lean in ladies, we can do it too!

The China Hustle (Hulu): Investors look to China to grow their wealth and the wealth keeps growing, but what exactly are these overseas companies and are the Westerners being legit? Spoiler: they are not.

Enron – The Smartest Guys in the Room (Prime): This used to be on Netflix for the longest – sorry. But this was a great documentary that explored the flagrant corruption in the American energy company that filed what was once the largest bankruptcy in American history.

Kids for Cash (YouTube): This is possible one of the saddest cases. Two judges doled out exorbitant and pretty cruel sentences for kids. Their parents thought they were just practicing zero-tolerance to curb rebellious behaviors? The real motivation, the judges got kickbacks and commission on each child they sent to the privatized prison.

Too Posh to Pay (YouTube): This UK special displays how the middle class and the rich are really the ones responsible for the most theft. Shouts out to the woman who LOVED being a fugitive - like no shame.

Planet FIFA (Netflix): OP knows nothing about sports except for the awesome snacks involved so learning about this was a flipping doo-hooo-hooo-hooo-zy! This film explores the international corruption and the constant bribery and money making machine that was in the world of football. Apologies as I could not find a trailer for this.

AOC, Chelsea Manning and others appear on charity stream to help trans child support group

$

It all began with Graham Linehan (show runner/creator/writer IT Crowd, Black Books, Father Ted etc) attacking a trans child support group named Mermaids for receiving public funding in the form of the UK lottery fund.

He even got users on the website Mumsnet to mass email the lottery in an attempt to stop any aid from being provided to the support group and has made claims that the group gives "untested drugs" to children, despite the fact that it is a SUPPORT GROUP and not a clinic.

Anyway, people are obviously appalled at this disgusting transphobic behavior from a straight male hasbeen who claims to be doing this all to "protect women". Enter Youtuber and Twitch streamer Hbomberguy, who decided to stream himself playing Donkey Kong 64 until he reaches 101% completion while collecting money for the charity.

The stream began quietly but quickly picked up steam, attracting such verified big names to the voice chat as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chelsea Manning and several game designers. Even Cher re-tweeted about it!

Grant Kirkhope, the original composer for Donkey Kong 64 showed up to provide support yesterday and said "Trans Rights" in a Donkey Kong voice and it OWNED:

Matilda's Mara Wilson stopped by the voice chat

Mythbuster's Adam Savage voiced his support

Host of PBS show Its Lit! Lindsay Ellis appeared on the voice chat

The official Glaad account

Out gay (confused him with someone else eek) Gay rights supporting former Bruins football player turned tabletop gamer (!) Chris Kluwe

In addition to these famous/political/industry people, the voice chat included trans men and women from around the world. Many spoke of the isolation they felt growing up and how much difference a support group would have made in their lives. OP teared up many times.

The stream is currently still going as I type this and has raised over $280,000! Edit: Stream is over and raised over 300k! Links:

Mermaids UK

A special treat for the Graham Linehan fans in the comments, a clip from the IT Crowd where a trans woman, played by a cis actress and repeatedly shown in a masculine way throughout the episode, gets beaten up

Erykah Badu Seemingly Supports R. Kelly, Needs to Have a Window Seat

Last night at her Chicago concert, eloquent speaker when it comes to questionable people, Head Wrap Supreme Erykah Badu wanted to "put up a prayer for R. Kelly" and hopes that he comes forward. There was a mix of cheers and jeers from the audience. From an attendee, The Hotep Hippie then said this:

Amazing, right? She then went onto Twitter to attempt to clarify what she meant and in OP's opinion, she did not do well in this endeavor. Given the vague wording, it seems unclear if she is doubling down on her support for Kelly or showing support the survivors.

Figure Skating: 2019 Canadian Nationals

$
0
0
It's a brave new season for Canadian skating after a wave of post-Olympic retirements, but the national competition in Saint John ended up, with one-half of an exception, returning people to the podium who had won the title a few years (or quite a few years, in one-half case) prior.

As referenced above, the men's match that many viewed as being between Old Man Keegan and the Boy Wonder ended up seeing Nam Nguyen take his second men's title. Nguyen won for the first time in 2015, the interregnum in Patrick Chan's eleven-year reign at the top, and then basically had three bad seasons in a row as problems caused by his massive growth spurt spiraled into serial changes of coach and crises of confidence. But he's been on the comeback trail this year, and he delivered.

Also, be warned, studies show that Rod Black commentating can be harmful in high doses.

But for a doubled quad Lutz, the winner would have been the aforementioned Boy Wonder, 14-year-old Stephen Gogolev, who lead after the short program but came second in the free skate.

The bronze medal went to Keegan Messing, surely a bit disappointed at missing the title, but he was also really thrilled for Nguyen, as they're good friends and were cheering each other on throughout.

I'll also mention the fourth-place finisher, Joseph Phan, who finished fourth at last year's Junior Worlds and moved to the TCC to train under Brian Orser in the summer, looking to consolidate his position. The first half of the season was a big disappointment for him, as the move was a bigger adjustment then perhaps he had anticipated, but he delivered his best ever free skate when it counted, securing himself a ticket back to Junior Worlds one more time.

The ladies...sigh, this is the one discipline that's a bit sad to talk about. And it's not like there weren't good news stories, but discussion around this was undeniably centered on Gabby Daleman, the defending national champion, who missed pretty much all of the first half of the season due to depression and the aftereffects of a concussion that initially nobody realized she had. For a while, it seemed like she might not even compete here, but she came. And she did really well in the short program. But then she fell apart in the free skate, and finished fifth, a result that had her bursting into tears. But as I said, the short program was solid.

All the best, Gabby.

The title went to Alaine Chartrand, whose career trajectory has paralleled Nguyen's to a considerable extent. She peaked roughly in the 2014-2016 period, winning the national title in 2016, but saw her results crater soon after, and missed the Olympics when she seemed guaranteed to get the third spot that Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabby had secured for Canada. She had some decent showings on the Grand Prix to start the new season, and here she had a strong free skate (UR still a problem, but one foot in front of the other).

I'll also mention the silver medalist, Aurora Cotop, who seems to be the new project of coach Ravi Walia, now that Kaetlyn is taking the season off and may or may not come back (Skate Canada ain't too proud to beg, Kaetlyn). I think she's a promising talent -- she's not been doing the Lutz or her 3T-3T combination this season, but that's because she had a pelvic fracture and bone marrow edema.

Then there's the pairs event, which had the only new person among the six people to stand atop a senior podium this year. Kirsten Moore-Towers won the pairs gold in 2011 with former partner Dylan Moscovitch, but for the last four years has skated with Michael Marinaro, and they've never been higher than bronze. They were the favourites going in because literally everybody else either retired or broke up since the last time.

The silver medalists were Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud, fifth last year. There's like a million Romeo and Juliet programs this year for some reason, but this is one of the better ones, in my opinion.

And finally, the marquee event of the competition in terms of how many potential Worlds Top 10 teams were present: ice dance.

Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje won two national titles in the seasons that Canada went Tessa-and-Scott-less, then dropped in the rankings when they came back, but now that Virtue and Moir seem gone for good, it was theirs for the taking, especially after winning a Worlds bronze in Milan. And then they decided it was all about the Benjamins (all about the Bordens, I guess?) and spent the fall touring across the country instead of competing. But did that slow them down? No, not all, as it turns out.

The free dance portion of the competition was actually won by the silver medalists, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, but they finished second overall, losing the gold by 1.47 points. Their free dance is a work of art, and keeps getting better.

And finally, the bronze medal went to the transplant team of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sørensen. She, a Quebec native, teamed up with the Danish Sørensen in 2012, and they competed for Denmark for five seasons, culminating in them qualifying an Olympics place for Pyeongchang. Except they couldn't go, because Denmark's naturalization regime isn't precisely liberal in this area, and you have to be a citizen to go to the Olympics. They decided to switch from his country to hers, where the citizenship applications go through smoothly and in timely fashion (just ask Kaitlyn and Piper).

It's a long way to Beijing, but Phase 1 of the plan, making the Canadian World team and blowing all other bronze medal contenders out of the water, has been executed.

This episode was truly one for the books! Home wrecker Michael decides to agitate his wife and her fluctuating blaccent in order to get away from her to sneak off and see his girlfriend, Megan. He does this right after ring shopping with his wife. He then drives off to Niagara Falls where Megan foolishly waits for him. Tracie showed up five hours late to her own wedding where the venue looked like it was King of Diamonds for the AARP set and Clint had some great vows until he uttered "my goddess". Then after Tracie and Clint check in to their honeymoon suite, Tracie runs off with her new husband's phone and car in need of ummm... crack apparently. Matt and Caitlin are freeloading off Matt's mother and Matt doesn't want to look for a job. Caitlin wants to do a date night like a real couple and must give some etiquette lessons to her new beau so food doesn't fly out of his tooth hole. Matt pretends to pull a dine n' dash with Caitlin which she vehemently opposes. Matt also claims that he truly feels superior and that he loves everything that comes before jail. Oh yeah, Misogylino and Brittany talk about his hesitation of meeting her son.

This episode has been brought to you by my lack of dignity and procrastination.
