Ariana Grande Non-Apologizes About Her Reposting Weave Joke

0
0

Some fans were calling out the flow and lyrical content of Ariana's latest single "7 Rings" - specifically with the lines "You like my hair? Gee, thanks! Just bought it".

Ariana reposted a joking post on her IG stories about how white women, like Ari, talking about getting their weaves would solve racism. It seemed as though Ari saw this as a validating and supporting statement, while people are debating that she's lacking awareness of the 'stariotypes' brought on actual black women who wear weaves.

She made and deleted a comment on Theshaderoom's Instagram, while also replying to her fans on Twitter about how her intention possibly came 'across the wrong way'.

After the "7 Rings" video and song dropped,, she hoped to divert the attention to her WOC co-writers:

Ariana Grande: Not 'Just A Tan'

0
0
For years, there have been much talk of Ariana Grande's ease into her appropriation of cultures that are not hers. Sadly, this discussion - which is being had by black women and Latinas (a lot of whom are genuine fans of Ariana's music) - has barely touched mainstream.

Ariana Grande's more rabid fans have managed to take these criticisms and turn them into meta jokes, reducing them down to mere memes. Some of them claim that she was pressured to bleach her skin for her role as Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon's Victorious (this post will debunk that).

[OP Note: none of the photos in this post will aim to alter the reader's perception. Ariana is wearing white pantyhose in the left photo and is in a slightly darker room in the right photo. Note that the unevenness in her tan can be spotted on the top of her arm (right photo). Small proof that this is not her natural skin tone, like many fans claim.]

Why pick on Ariana Grande? There have been an alarming number of popular artists before her who have made a career out of their appropriation and have gotten away with it. Even if our culture hadn't shifted, this simply would not (or should not) excuse Ariana Grande, Jesy Nelson, or any other artist for doing it. At the height of 'blackfishing', we are long past enough is enough.

Ariana Grande's Origins

- Born June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida
- Joan Grande (mother, born in Brooklyn, CEO of Hose-McCann Communications [telephone and alarm systems]), Edward Butera (father, born in New Jersey, Owner and Founder of Ibi Designs Inc. [graphic designs])
- Ariana has been open about her support for therapy, which she has been in and out of since the divorce of her parents when she was 8 years old.
- Joan discovered Ariana can sing when she was around 4-5 years old.
- Her parents invested in her talents, putting her into theatre and appearing in local productions before making the move to Los Angeles when she was 13.

SUMMARY: Little Italian white girl with a big voice, born upper-middle class to educated white parents. Attended private schools, but dropped out of high school when she started working well in LA.

Ariana's Grande Voice

---Source (Twitter)
When Ariana was 13 years old, she told playwright Jason Robert Brown that she wanted to incorporate an R&B sound to her parts in the original cast album for the Broadway Musical, 13. Ten years later, he wrote a Time Feature on Ariana Grande, stating that she would be underestimated because she's "a white girl who wants to sing R&B" and for "dating a rapper". Blogger Allyssa Golden of allyssacapricam summed it up a lot better than I could:

Allyssa Golden: "Her [Time100] feature was written by playwright Jason Robert Brown, who helped discover her. He wrote that he knew from the beginning that Grande would be underestimated because she was “a white girl who wants to sing R&B” and because she dates rappers. And while it’s pretty obvious that white singers who have “soulful” voices reach unparalleled mainstream success compared to their black counterparts (read Adele, Justin Timberlake, Meagan Trainor, Christina Aguilera, [then-]newcomer Alessia Cara, the list goes on), Brown had the nerve to say that Grande would be “underestimated.”"

AAVE
African-American Vernacular English

Ariana Grande has been using AAVE as a tool to appear quirky, adorable, cool, and a handful of other traits she may otherwise fall flat on. She has proven to favour AAVE when she is...

A) attempting to make light out of an intimidating situation

Ariana Grande nervous in front of Mr. and Mrs. Obama.
---Source (YouTube)

Dodging rumours about her love life.
---Source (YouTube)

B) attempting to be funny and/or charming

Looking through baby photos - also mentioned in this ONTD post.
---Source (YouTube)

"Dat booty do."
---Source (YouTube)

C) trying to be 'hard'

After injuring her hand in an escape room.
---Source (YouTube)

"People took my quote and made a headline out of it, I know what y'all do."
---Source (YouTube)

Ariana Grande has the luxury of switching off her AAVE speak whenever the situation seems appropriate to her. Whether that's because it doesn't go with her 1950s housewife aesthetic (2009-2011), she's marketing to white American or Japanese audiences (esp during 2012-2014), or because she wants to be heard or taken seriously.

Black folk who speak AAVE don't have that luxury and are instead dismissed as uneducated, poor / absent of class, the list goes on but OP will stop here. Above is a small amount of proof that Ariana Grande takes these racist labels and twists the fact that black people who speak AAVE aren't taken seriously into something of a parody - which white supremecy is charmed by.

2-Time U.S. Figure Skating Champion Dead by Suicide, One Day After SafeSport Suspension

John Coughlin, who twice won the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Pairs, died by suicide on Friday, just one day after he was suspended from participating in any skating events due to an ongoing investigation into a grievance filed by an unknown party. He was 33.

On Thursday, SafeSport (a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee) gave Coughlin a temporary suspension from skating as they investigate the grievance. It is unknown what Coughlin was accused of doing; SafeSport investigates everything from bullying to sexual misconduct.

Coughlin had issued a statement saying “While I wish I could speak freely about the unfounded allegations levied against me, the SafeSport rules prevent me from doing so since the case remains pending. I note only that the SafeSport notice of allegation itself stated that an allegation in no way constitutes a finding by SafeSport or that there is any merit to the allegation.”

Coughlin won the U.S. Pairs National title with two different partners: Caitlin Yankowskas in 2011 and Caydee Denney in 2012. He and Denney were also the bronze medalists in 2014. He had been working as a figure skating analyst in recent years.

U.S. Figure Skating and prominent skaters issued statements on social media:

Gigi Hadid was spotting leaving Zayn's NYC apartment. Recently the couple sparked rumours they'd broken up after not spending any time together during the holidays. A source told US Weeekly that they'd called it quits and had been spending time apart since November.

“They’re done,” the source explained. “They could get back together, but it’s over for now.”

The source also told the magazine that Gigi “tried hard to make it work,” but that Zayn has “a lot of his own issues that she couldn’t help him get through. She cut herself off from all her friends every time they were together. She focused all her time and energy on him, but it just got to be too much.”

It now appears they may be back on.

Britain will no longer allow rape scenes, sexual violence in films rated for under 15

0
0

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has announced films with scenes of sexual violence will now be assigned a rating of at least 15 (for moviegoers 15 or older).

The change is a result of feedback from the public during BBFC's most recent survey: "The key message from the guideline consultation was heightened concern about sexual violence across the board. Although we operate very strict standards around sexual violence there was an appetite on the part of the public for us to be even more cautious than we are at the moment."

One film that would have a different rating under the new system is 2008's “The Duchess," which got a 12A rating at the time despite featuring a scene that implies rape. Now, that scene would have to be cut to avoid a 15 rating.
