30 (5) Horror Movies We Can’t Wait to See in 2019

0
0

@HauntedMeg at Bloody Disgusting put together a comprehensive list of upcoming horror releases. Here are 5, do check out the full list! (I purposely left out the more obvious movies, like Jordan Peele's upcoming Us.)

Escape Room
Director: Adam Robitel
lXnSUu.jpg
Six strangers find themselves in circumstances beyond their control, and must use their wits to survive.
OP Note: Robitel made The Taking of Deborah Logan, which I really liked, so I'm looking forward to this.

The Hole in the Ground
Director: Lee Cronin

lY2IuZ.jpg
Trying to escape her broken past, Sarah O'Neill is building a new life on the fringes of a backwood rural town with her young son Chris. A terrifying encounter with a mysterious neighbour shatters her fragile security, throwing Sarah into a spiralling nightmare of paranoia and mistrust, as she tries to uncover if the disturbing changes in her little boy are connected to an ominous sinkhole buried deep in the forest that borders their home.
OP Note: This Irish horror film is set to debut at Sundance this year and is the director's debut.

In the Tall Grass
Director: Vincenzo Natali

KIevSY.jpg
Brother and sister are driving through Kansas during their road trip. Suddenly, they hear calls for help coming. They stop to investigate and get lost in field of tall grass.
OP Note: Natali directed Cube and Splice so I'm DEFINITELY looking forward to this!

Body at Brighton Rock
Director: Roxanne Benjamin

BBXaLs.jpg
A park ranger spends the night guarding a potential crime scene on a remote mountain trail.
OP Note: Benjamin's section in Southbound was probably my favorite out of that anthology. This is her debut feature.

Rabid
Directors: Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

Nrm25I.jpg
What happens when you realize that to achieve your dreams you have to live a nightmare? Rose is a quiet, demure, unassuming woman in her looks and actions. Her dream is to become a famous designer in the fashion world, but a terrible accident leaves Rose scarred beyond recognition. She seeks out a radical untested stem cell treatment. The treatment is nothing short of a miracle and wallflower Rose turns into the belle of the ball. It all seems to good to be true. She is now everything she wanted to be. But everything in life comes at a price and this new found perfect life is no exception.
OP Note: This is a remake of Cronenberg's classic. The Soska sisters made American Mary and have done a bunch of short films.

Variety Cover Story: Bill Hader's winding road from Stefon to the dark laughs of "Barry"

-Originally came out to LA to be a director, but got noticed by Megan Mullally and got called to audition for SNL, and the rest is history.
-2018 proved to be his breakout year because he writes, acts, directs, and produces his show Barry on HBO which got him critical praise (Emmy win as well)
-Dealt with constant panic attacks and anxiety when he was on SNL which he says wasn't easy for his ex-wife and says he remains friends with her.
-Didn't see his children much during 2018. “It’s this weird thing where when you’re in this industry, you don’t have time to be with them, and it’s really, really difficult. I’m getting emotional right now talking about it.”

-Wants to eventually direct a feature film which is what he wanted to do instead of being a performer
-Is going to be in IT Chapter 2 and the show Barry S2

Will Poulter Quits Twitter For His Mental Health

0
0

Actor Will Poulter (who most recently costarred as Colin Ritman in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) tweeted earlier today that in "the interest of my mental health I feel the time has come to change my relationship with social media," and that "in light of my recent experiences I am choosing to take a step back, or sorts, from Twitter."

Poulter has done work with a number of anti-bullying charities (which he lists in his tweet), and has long campaigned for anti-bullying education in British schools. He didn't give a specific reason for wanting to leave Twitter, so it's not clear whether he was bullied off the platform, or if the general increased interest in him after Bandersnatch was released last week has just been too much.

Mara Wilson Tweets Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Emotion'

0
0

Matilda and A Simple Wish actress and fan of ONTD Mara Wilson posted a screenshot of the underrated hit "Run Away With Me" on Twitter with the caption "Every single gay man I know was right about this album".

She does not exactly say how she feels about the album but it's safe to say she stans after crediting alleged gays introducing it to her.

Carly Rae further cementing her cult pop queen status!

ONTD do you know any gays that were right about something?

6 Books to Celebrate #ScienceFictionDay

0

It's January 2nd (At least currently where I'm at), which is author Isaac Asimov's birthday and also - unofficially - National Science Fiction Day in the United States. Let's observe this "holiday" and talk books! Here are six sci-fi books that I really enjoyed.

An Unkindness of Ghosts
by Rivers Solomon
tnEkLl.jpg
Odd-mannered, obsessive, withdrawn, Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She's used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, as they accuse, she'd be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remained of her world, save for stories told around the cookfire.

Aster lives in the low-deck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations, the Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way, the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster, who they consider to be less than human.

When the autopsy of Matilda's sovereign reveals a surprising link between his death and her mother's suicide some quarter-century before, Aster retraces her mother's footsteps. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer and sowing the seeds of civil war, Aster learns there may be a way off the ship if she's willing to fight for it.

The One
by John Marrs
uEl6T9.jpg
A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.

That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…

The Call (Grey Land #1)
by Peadar Ó Guilín
W30DbV.jpg
Imagine a world where you might disappear any minute, only to find yourself alone in a grey sickly land, with more horrors in it than you would ever wish to know about. And then you hear a horn and you know that whoever lives in this hell has got your scent and the hunt has already begun.

Could you survive the Call?
Under the Skin
by Michel Faber
dH9wjK.jpg
In this haunting, entrancing novel, Michel Faber introduces us to Isserley, a female driver who cruises the Scottish Highlands picking up hitchhikers. Scarred and awkward, yet strangely erotic and threatening, she listens to her hitchhikers as they open up to her, revealing clues about who might miss them if they should disappear. A grotesque and comical allegory, Under the Skin takes us on a heart-thumping ride through dangerous territory — our own moral instincts and the boundaries of compassion — to present a surreal representation of contemporary society run amok.

Bloodchild and Other Stories
by Octavia E. Butler
cGPuR1.jpg
A perfect introduction for new readers and a must-have for avid fans, this New York Times Notable Book includes "Bloodchild," winner of both the Hugo and the Nebula awards and "Speech Sounds," winner of the Hugo Award. Appearing in print for the first time, "Amnesty" is a story of a woman named Noah who works to negotiate the tense and co-dependent relationship between humans and a species of invaders. Also new to this collection is "The Book of Martha" which asks: What would you do if God granted you the ability—and responsibility—to save humanity from itself?

Stories of Your Life and Others
by Ted Chiang
tiXMSD.jpg
What if men built a tower from Earth to Heaven-and broke through to Heaven's other side? What if we discovered that the fundamentals of mathematics were arbitrary and inconsistent? What if there were a science of naming things that calls life into being from inanimate matter? What if exposure to an alien language forever changed our perception of time? What if all the beliefs of fundamentalist Christianity were literally true, and the sight of sinners being swallowed into fiery pits were a routine event on city streets? These are the kinds of outrageous questions posed by the stories of Ted Chiang. Stories of your life . . . and others.

ONTD Original: Queens of Color Who Should Have Gone Farther On "Rupaul's Drag Race"

0
0
Rupaul's Drag Race has been on the air for ~10 YEARS~ and has turned out some amazing stars. But it has also rewarded some white queens over queens of color who were more deserving. Let's take a look at some of the most egregious cases of this.

tenor.gif
Tatiana
Alaska eliminating Tatiana and keeping Roxxxy will always be a crime against humanity.

150220-news-drag-race.jpg

Vivacious

Vivacious had a fascinating, unique Club Kid look. Plus, she had Ornacia on her side. Don't honestly tell me that April Carrion or even Gia Gunn was a stronger queen.

asia.gif
Asia O'Hara
Asia O'Hara was stronger than Kameron Michaels, imho. She should have had his place in the final 3.

kennedy d.jpg
Kennedy Davenport
Kennedy should have been in the top 3 over Pearl, or even Ginger Minge. Fight me.

giphy (2).gif
Latrice

Latrice was eliminated on the Bitch Ball episode because her hem was unfinished. Bitch, so what? Chad and Phi Phi's costumes were so boring. Phi Phi should have been in the bottom with Chad, and then Latrice wouldn't have lost the lip sync.

Featured Pride performer Manila Luzon.jpg
Manila
God, this was painful to watch. Team Latrila, aka Latrice and Manila, should have made it to the top four... and Manila definitely should have gone farther than she did.

c17519fdbeb4bcce4f693e410eee30a0.gif
Shangela
WHAT was this?? Shangela was the frontrunner of AS3, had a great redemption arc across multiple seasons, but then the other queens gave the win to Trixie. I like Trixie, but, I mean...

mgid_ao_image_logotv.jpeg
Shea Couleé

Yes, Sasha turned that final lip sync out. No, she still didn't deserve to win. Shea won the most challenges of her season and slayed every damn time. Sasha had some cool fashion and loudly told everyone how ~intellectual she was. Shea should have won.

Honorable mention: Miss Vanessa Vanjie Matteo

"Captain" Daryl Dragon Has Passed Away

0

* Daryl Dragon, aka the Captain of Captain & Tennille, passed away today at the age of 76 from renal failure.

* He was the keyboardist of the band and married to Toni Tennille until 2014, when she filed for divorce. Her filing had referenced health insurance coverage, however in Toni's memoir she talked about how Daryl was emotionally distant and even subjected her to bizarre dietary restrictions. Toni said she waited nearly 40 years to file for divorce because she "didn't want people to be disappointed". You can read more about that here.

* Captain & Tennille are best known for their songs "Love Will Keep Us Together", "Muskrat Love", and "Do That To Me One More Time".

* In 2010 Toni wrote about Daryl living with a Parkinsonian neurological condition that caused tremors, preventing him from continuing to play music.

* After the divorce, the two remained on good terms and Toni later moved to Arizona to help take care of him.

Amandla Stenberg's interracial Nazi love story movie released online and slammed on social media

Amma Asante's movie about a biracial girl (played by Amandla) with an aryan mother who falls in love with a Nazi boy (played by the guy who was the oldest kid in Captain Fantastic) was released in theaters last year but it flopped. It was released online yesterday. Apparently it's even more tone deaf and ridiculous than you'd expect and it was mocked accordingly.

Tonight, Lifetime begins a six-part series on the long-running accusations against R. Kelly, including his alleged targeting of teenage girls and his sex cult.
