Outlander first look and news!

0
0

Summer 2014 cannot come soon enough for fans of Diana Gabaldon's bestselling book series, "Outlander." Why? Because that's when the upcoming TV adaptation on Starz is set to premiere. For the uninitiated, "Outlander" is an epic tale of adventure, history, time travel, and romance that revolves around World War II nurse Claire Randall, who ends up in 18th-century Scotland in the company of handsome Highlander Jamie Fraser.

Earlier this week, the network hosted a fan event in Los Angeles and unveiled the first teaser trailer for the show, which gave fans an early look at their beloved main characters Claire and Jamie brought to life by actors Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan. We sought out a few "Outlander" experts for their thoughts on why the story has mass appeal, why Heughan will be everyone's new favorite leading man, and why we should have faith in executive producer Ronald D. Moore ("Battlestar Galactica").

Here are five fan-based reasons why "Outlander" is the next big thing on TV:

1. This Is Not a Schmaltzy Romance

"Contrary to popular belief, 'Outlander' is not a romance novel that appeals only to bored housewives," says Jennifer Townsend, owner and administrator of OutlanderFan.com. "Technically, it's classified as historical fiction, and while at its heart is a love story/triangle, there is so much more depth to it. There's literally something for everyone: time travel, history, politics, war, violence, and yes, romance."
"There are things that appeal to men as well as women," say Sarah Ksiazek and Johanna Field, writers for OutlanderTVNews.com. "It is historical fiction, and some of the places exist, some of the events did occur in history, and even some of the characters are pulled straight from the history books. The history of Scotland in the 1700s very much provides a timeline for the story weaved through it."

2. A Lovely Leading Man and Lady
"Have you seen [Heughan]? The man is gorgeous!" says Andrea James of OutlanderAddiction.com. "But really, Sam's physical features are of lesser importance. Yes, he is built just as Diana Gabaldon describes him, 6' 3," a large presence, built like a swimmer or basketball player, etc., but Sam has already shown he will be a great Jamie with his passion for getting [the adaptation] right, his great attitude and wit, and his sincerity and kindness toward fans. We all love Sam, already."
And let's not forget that the world essentially revolves around memorable main character Claire Randall: "I'm excited for the world to fall in love with Claire, a strong, capable female role model," says Townsend. "I think she will be well-received by the general public."

3. A Successful Storyteller Is at the Helm

"Ron Moore, who has produced many successful series, is very focused on keeping it as close to the book version as possible," say Ksiazek and Field. "There is already a built-in fan base that started building with the publication of the first novel in 1991. Because of Ron Moore, Starz, Sony, and the production team, this will be an extraordinary series that will have fans and newcomers clamoring for more."
Bonus fact: John Dahl, who directed episodes of "Breaking Bad," directs the first two "Outlander" episodes.

4. Success Lies Within an Accurate Adaptation

"The show will be a success not only because of its appeal to most audiences, but also the dedication of the writers and producers of the show to keep true to the books," says James. "We've been told on several occasions that will be a No. 1 priority of the makers of the show, and from what we've seen thus far, I believe them."

5. The Author Approves

"They have been very kind in involving me," Gabaldon recently revealed during Starz's winter press tour, along with the fact that she has a cameo role in the first season. "They show me scripts. They show me glimpses of this, that, and the other, and they ask my opinion every now and again... although they are not obliged to accept it. I have been extremely amazed and very touched at the degree to which they trust me."

"Outlander" premieres this summer on Starz.

Harvey Weinstein on his NRA film: I'll choose less violent projects; don't come at Meryl Streep

0
0

After he disclosed plans to produce a new movie starring Meryl Streep that takes on the National Rifle Assn.’s polical influence, Harvey Weinstein tells CNN’s “Piers Morgan Live” on Friday that he will start choosing movies that “aren’t violent or as violent as they used to be.”

After his announcement that he would make an anti-NRA project on Howard Stern’s radio show earlier this week, gun rights advocates pounced, with Ted Nugent labelling Weinstein a “sub-human punk” and others seeing hypocrisy in his call for stronger gun control and at the same time producing movies like “Django Unchained” and “Pulp Fiction” that are heavy in gun violence.

After Morgan asked Weinstein about when he would stop movies that don’t glamorize guns, he said, “Well, I think they have a point. You have to look in the mirror too. I have to choose films that aren’t violent or aren’t as violent as they used to be.”

He added, “For me personally I can’t continue to that. The change starts here….For me I can’t make one movie, and say ‘This is what I want for my kids and just go out and be a hypocrite. I can’t continue to do that. The change starts here.”

Weinstein made a distinction between a movie like “Lone Survivor,” about the U.S. special forces, which he said he would make, and “some crazy action movie, just for the sake of blowing up people.”

But Weinstein said that he’s willing to take the heat because the issue can’t be ignored. “As much as I want to ignore it, as much as I want to go on with my regular life, I can’t do it this time,” he said.

Harvey Weinstein: "All the heat should come my way"

Weinstein is careful to clarify that the anti-gun sentiment is his own, and does not reflect any position of his cast:

"Meryl Streep's an actress. I want to make that clear right away. She's working as someone that's playing a part," he iterates to Morgan. "It's not her belief and all the heat should come my way, and I'm kind of used to the heat anyhow."

ONTD ORIGINAL: Where are they now? Skins First Generation on the 7th Anniversary of Series One

0
0

what up yall

On January 25, 2007, British teen drama SKINS debuted and took the world by storm as both a critical and commercial success. The show ended this past August after a successful run, marked by cast transitions every two series. The first generation remains the most ICONIC and beloved of them all. SO YALL, on the 7th anniversary of the show's debut, let's take a look and see where they are now.
Nicholas Hoult (Tony Stonem)

The show's de facto lead, Tony was the smart, popular, and handsome guy in school who was also a total psycho. Since leaving Skins in 2008, he's starred in a bevy of films. A Single Man opposite Colin Firth and Julianne Moore in 2009, X-Men: First Class as Beast/Hank McCoy in 2011 (and is due to reprise his role in this year's X-Men: Days of Future Past), and was the lead in both Warm Bodies (fairly successful) and Jack the Giant Slayer (total fucking flop). In 2015, he's due to appear opposite Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in the Mad Max remake. His most famous role, however, is being ONTD's faveJennifer Lawrence's on-again off-again boyfriend since meeting on the set of XMFC in 2010.

April Pearson (Michelle Richardson)

April played Michelle Richardson, Tony's long-suffering girlfriend. April herself hasn't done much since Skins ended, but did star in a horror-comedy film called Tormented opposite Alex "Don't Lie, I Know Who You Are" Pettyfer and Skins castmate Larissa Wilson in 2009. She's acted in a couple episodes of British soap opera Casualty, and apparently has gone to a few film premieres this year (who knows why). She's pretty active on both Twitter and Instagram, and also was a beauty blogger for a little bit (her blog hasn't been updated for about two years now, though).

Mike Bailey (Sid Jenkins)

(if im gonna be real im not even 100% sure if that's him now)

Sid was Tony's nice guy, awkward virgin best friend. Mike Bailey totally fell off the grid after Skins ended but apparently talked shit about the show on Twitter and then deleted it after he was attacked by stans. He had some nudes leak in 2010-2011, and appeared in some Channel 4 documentary series in 2009. He emerged from wherever he's been hiding to take a role in comedy film We Are The Freaks, released in the UK in August 2013. FUN FACT: Sid's crazy dad was played by Peter Capaldi, the newest Doctor on Doctor Who.

Hannah Murray (Cassie Ainsworth)

Cassie was the eccentric, sweet friend who suffered from mental illness, including anorexia. She reprised her role as Cassie in the feature length episode Skins Pure in 2013. Hannah Murray's done really well for herself post-Skins: she acted in a critically acclaimed West End production titled The Face in 2008, several films between 2010-2011, and has been playing Gilly on Game of Thrones since 2012. She just premiered her new movie God Help The Girl at Sundance this past weekend, and is going to be seen in the upcoming movies Lily and Kat and No Way To Live.

Joe Dempsie (Chris Miles)

Joe Dempsie played Chris, the party animal of the group. Demspie's been very successful post-Skins as well. He was in episodes of Merlin and Doctor Who in 2008, but really hit the jackpot when he was cast as Gendry in Game of Thrones in 2011 (he was recurring for season two, but as of season three is a regular cast member). He also starred in the acclaimed BBC Three drama The Fades (also starring his GoT costar Natalie Dormer) and was in a few eps of various BBC programs. He also got reallyfuckinghot.

Larissa Wilson (Jal Fazer)
Jal was the level-headed friend of the group (and is totally underrated tbqhhhh). Unfortunately tho, Larissa Wilson has all but disappeared. She played Iris in a TV movie about Shirley Bassey in 2011, was an extra in a TV series called Trollied in 2012, and was in two episodes of Holby City in 2008. She was in the horror movie Tormented with her castmate April Pearson in 2009.
Mitch Hewer (Maxxie Oliver)

Maxxie was the gay friend who was a killer dancer. Mitch Hewer got naked for Cosmo UK in 2008, and starred in Britannia High as Danny in 2009. The show (essentially a British version of Glee) only ran for one season. He has two movies coming out in 2014: Nightlight opposite Chloe Bridges from The Carrie Diaries and Behaving Badly (which is actually pretty star studded: starring Selena Gomez, Dylan McDermott, Elisabeth Shue, Heather Graham, Mary Louise Parker, Cary Elwes, Jenna from Awkward, etc). He's pretty active on Twitter as well.
Dev Patel (Anwar Kharral)

Dev played Anwar, the Muslim friend who took a pretty selective approach to his faith. Dev's obviously played the lead in the Academy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire (fun fact: Danny Boyle chose Dev to play Jamal after his Skins-fan daughter recommended him). He was also in the flop (but it still broke even???) live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. He starred in the successful old people go abroad movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Nowadays, Dev can be seen in HBO's The Newsroom, and is filming a few movies this year. He's also been dating Slumdog costar/hottie Freida Pinto since 2009.

Kaya Scodelario (Effy Stonem)

Effy was Tony's wild/mute younger sister, who later became the central character of the second generation (series 3 and 4). Kaya was on Skins until 2010 (reprised her role in the feature length episode Skins Fire in 2013), and then went on to star in an adaptation of Wuthering Heights as Cathy in 2011 and starred in 2013's The Truth About Emanuel as the title character. She can next be seen in the upcoming adaptation of The Maze Runner with Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien.
Aimee Ffion-Edwards (Sketch)

Screen Shot 2014-01-25 at 2.57.06 AM
Sketch was the crazy girl who was obsessively in love with Maxxie (only in series two). Aimee Ffion-Edwards has been working pretty steadily since she left the show; she was in series two of Luther with Idris Elba and starred in Jerusalem, both on Broadway and in the West End. In 2012, she was on Sky series Walking and Talking for four episodes.
Daniel Kaluuya (Posh Kenneth)

Kenneth wasn't a main character but was a recurring friend of the group's. Daniel Kaluuya actually was writing for the show as well as acting in it (at age 17!). He wrote a couple eps for series three as well, but didn't act in them. He's been acting steadily since leaving the show, appearing in Doctor Who, Psychoville with Dawn French, Chatroom with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Johnny English 2, and was most recently in Kick Ass 2. He's really active on Twitter, too.

Justin Bieber -- Cops Claim of Drag Racing Doesn't Hold Water

0
0
Miami Beach cops claim Justin Bieber was drag racing at the time of his arrest Thurday ... but the facts seem to show the allegation is MADE UP ... because we've learned they were actually UNDERTHE SPEED LIMIT in the middle of the so-called drag race.

0124-justin-bieber-driving-3

According to the police report ... cops spotted Justin and his buddy Khalil drag racing at around 4 AM.

The police report says ... an officer observed the 2 vehicles reaching speeds between 55 and 60 MPH.

Now the problems.

Cops say they noticed the "drag race" on the 2600 block of Pine Tree Drive.  Cops were traveling in the opposite direction so they made a U turn and pursued the cars for 15 blocks.

Mind you ... Justin was driving one of the fastest race cars around -- a Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder.  Khalil was driving a Ferrari 16M.  Cops claim 2 SUVs in Justin's entourage actually blocked off traffic to give the 2 a clear path.

So how could a 15-block drag race in those cars reach speeds of ONLY 60 MPH?

Fact is ... THEY DIDN'T REACH 60IN FACT THEY DIDN'T REACH 50THEY DIDN'T EVEN
REACH 40.

TMZ has learned ... the place where Justin and Khalil rented the cars attached a GPS device that also tracks speed.

The GPS clocked both cars at 27 MPH at the 3500 block of Pine Tree Drive ... smack in the middle of the so-called "drag race."

There's only one time they ever broke 50 MPH and that was long before the pursuit started.  When Justin and Khalil left the club, one car was briefly clocked at 52 MPH and the other 47 MPH. Both drivers slowed down pretty quick and 5 blocks before cops noticed them they were going 34 MPH in a 30 MPH zone.   Blocks later, they were steady at 27 MPH.

So it seems cops goosed the facts to justify the stop.

And that's not the only problem with the police report.  TMZ broke the story ... Justin's blood alcohol level was .014 -- a barely measurable amount.  Yet cops claim Justin reeked of alcohol both at the scene and at the police department.

Charlamagne stans for Rihallah: "Rihanna is the realest since Tupac"

Charlamagne recalled a very interesting story from a night he spent partying with Rihanna in the hood. He explained how he was drunk in Beverly Hills and tweeted Rihanna asking her to join the fun. The singer obliged, and wound up taking him and his crew to a hood spot rather than some fancy club.

Charlamagne remembers her being the "coolest chick" because she was dressed casual in jeans, a t-shirt and a hat, and all they did was pop bottles and light up all night. He even recalls running into Beanie Sigel at the hood spot.

Charlamagne feels as though Rihanna "is the realest in the game since Tupac." Check out the interesting story below.

Phil Collins working with British songstress Adele

0

Veteran British rocker Phil Collins said in comments aired Friday that he has started collaborating with compatriot Adele, reported to be working on a follow-up to her hit 2011 album "21."

The former "Genesis" frontman, who effectively retired from music a few years ago, gave no more details of his cooperation with the multiple Grammy-winning British songstress.

"I've just started to work with Adele," he told a TV interviewer for Inside South Florida, adding: "She contacted me to write together."

Collins, 62, said he had not known much about 25-year-old London-born Adele, who had huge hits with songs including "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep."

"I wasn't actually too aware. I live in a cave," he joked. "But she's achieved an incredible amount. I really love her voice. I love some of that stuff she's done, too," he added.

Adele had a baby following the worldwide success of her second album, "21," released in February 2011. She won another Grammy last year for the 007 theme tune "Skyfall," and is working on a new album, according to Rolling Stone.

Some media reports have suggested it could be released in mid 2014.

Last month, "21" became the first album to pass three million digital sales in the United States, according to leading online tracking company Nielsen. It continues to enjoy robust sales and so far has sold 26 million copies worldwide.

Collins, the drummer-turned-frontman of Genesis who went on to sell more than 100 million albums as a solo artist, announced in March 2011 that he was calling it a day to concentrate on being a full-time father to two young sons.

His comments came two days before the 56th annual Grammy Awards show this weekend in Los Angeles.

Justin Bieber's recent antics 'caused by growing dependence on steroids which helped him bulk up'

Skärmavbild 2014-01-25 kl. 20.06.15

Pop star Justin Bieber has reportedly become increasingly dependent on steroids which has caused his recent bizarre behaviour.

According to The Sun the 19-year-old has been using Clenbuterol, a diet drug which is most commonly used on the horses.

The claims come after the singer emerged from his Miami rental on Friday evening following his DUI arrest.

The paper reports that Justin, who is currently on bail, started using the drug after he discovered weight lifters use it to gain extra muscle definition.

A source said: ‘As well as drinking and smoking weed, Justin’s been taking steroids to give himself a six pack.

‘His physique had gone from boy-like to muscled in a very short time and his mood have become wildly erratic.’

The singer appeared in high spirits when he left his Miami mansion to hundreds of waiting fans on Friday evening.

His appearance followed a tweet just a few hours earlier in which Justin finally addressed his fans telling them to stay strong as criticism is leveled at their support following the incident - that involved drugs, alcohol and drag racing.

The young star has however, refused to comply with his management team that has urged him to check into rehab.

Josh Hutcherson Splits with Longtime Agent & Agency

The actor felt it was time for a change, according to sources

“The Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson has parted ways with ICM Partners and his longtime agent Carter Cohn, TheWrap has learned.

Hutcherson exited the agency amicably this week and plans to take meetings next month with CAA, WME and UTA, an individual familiar with the situation told TheWrap. Hutcherson and Cohn had a “great working relationship” according to sources, who added that the actor simply felt “it was time for a change.”

Hutcherson is set to reprise his role as Peeta Mellark in Lionsgate’s two-part franchise finale “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,” though his lucrative deals for those sequels were made by ICM Partners.

The agency also negotiated a starring role for the young actor in the indie “Paradise Lost,” which co-stars Benicio del Toro as drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.

“The Hunger Games” isn’t Hutchson’s only franchise, as he also stars alongside Dwayne Johnson in New Line’s “Journey” movies.

Hutcherson was a child actor whose breakout turn as Laser in “The Kids Are All Right” helped propel him to stardom.

Justin Bieber financially supporting his dad

JUSTIN Bieber has been financially supporting his 38-year-old father, Jeremy Bieber.

Jeremy was partying with his superstar son before and after the 19-year-old was arrested for a DUI and drag racing in Miami.

“[Jeremy] was absent for most of Justin’s childhood, and has only been a presence his life in the past several years after the singer catapulted to super stardom,” a source told RadarOnline.

“Jeremy loves the lifestyle his son leads, private jets, exotic cars and over the top vacations. Justin had been financially supporting Jeremy for several years. Jeremy treats Justin as a friend, a peer, instead of as his son, they’re buddies.

“It’s absolutely no secret that Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun, and Jeremy don’t get along. Scooter has been the father figure in Justin’s life, and then all of a sudden, Jeremy pops back on the scene….look at all the chaos in Justin’s life.

“Scooter is the voice of reason, and tells him stuff Justin doesn’t want to hear, and Jeremy is the opposite.”

William Orbit criticizes Will.i.am over Britney Spears album production

William Orbit has criticized will.i.am's production on the new Britney Spears album.
will.i.am was named executive producer of Britney Jean in May last year.

Orbit, who wrote 'Alien' on the record, told Twitter followers that he was unhappy with the production of his track.

Prior to the release of Britney Jean, a demo version of 'Alien' leaked with unedited vocals. Fans criticized will.i.am after the album version featured auto tune effects and a slight jump in the track.

Writing on Twitter, Orbit said: "Remember 'Glitchgate'? I assure you all that there will.be.no more glitches"

"If yr familiar my workings over the years, u'll know I'm usually in a position to intercept rogue glitches before they land"

"One day the story will.be.told But right now, the future is far too bright to look back", he finished.

Orbit previously said that he would find it difficult to let the matter lie, telling Facebook followers: "Should I let this whole Britney demo thing lie? Yes.

"But will I? Hmmm, hard to when you care as much as I do. Will I ever clear my name of heinous autotune crimes? Time will tell."
will.i.am is yet to comment on the jump in the track.

Spears is currently in Vegas as part of her 'Piece of Me' residency, which has outperformed Celine Dion and Elton John so far this year.

BITTEN
New episodes of Bitten will now air at 8 PM ET/PT beginning Monday, January 27.(OP: Wow, the SyFy brain trust finally realized that airing two werewolf shows head-to-head - it was up against Teen Wolf on MTV - was probably not the greatest idea. They must've have forgotten that Bitten was not 100% their show when they did the original schedule, trololol.)

LOST GIRL
New episodes of Lost Girl will now air at 10 PM ET/PT beginning Monday, January 27.

Being Human
Being Human remains in its regular timeslot Mondays at 9 PM ET/PT.

Also, if you want a more in-depth look at Lost Girl 4.02, there's this ONTD post. After Lost Girl 4.03 airs on Monday, you could look at this Q&A afterwards that was also posted here for 4.03, but it's spoiler-iffic, jsyk.  (If you want to comment on any of those posts, feel free - I track all the comments on posts I make here since they usually don't get tons of comments, so new/old doesn't really make a difference to me.)

SOURCES: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Bitten airs tonight in Canada on Space at 9e|6p, so I thought I'd split the difference, or something, with this post. I might drop the "canadian celebrities" tag in the future if I remember to post these promos if someone else doesn't do it (it's what I use with the addition of the "television" tag since there's no "television - canadian" tag), unless some folks in Canada/general fans of Canadian celebrities want me to continue to tag it that way, especially since Bitten's cast is pretty much all Canadian and it's the first showing of these eps?? Space is not really doing much promo at this point.  Speak, or forever hold your peace. (j/k)

B.J. Novak’s ‘One More Thing’ Book Trailer Stars a French Mindy Kaling

0
0

On February 4th, B.J. Novak’s short story collection One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories will be released. And, in proper actor fashion, it comes with a book trailer. The short video features Mindy Kaling as the Sartre-loving cafe woman he’s (unsuccessfully) trying to impress. While the trailer is mostly in French, don’t worry–you’ll still get the trademark back-and-forth quips between Novak and Kaling, if in arthouse black-and-white.
