Princeton Group Cuts 'Little Mermaid' Song Citing 'Toxic Masculinity'

An all-male a cappella group at Princeton University has pulled a Disney movie song from its act.
A student newspaper column suggested the lyrics helped promote “toxic masculinity.”
During "Kiss the girl", a woman would be brought onstage to decide whether or not a man from the crowd could kiss her.
The song’s message is misogynistic and too many women have been pulled on stage for unwanted encounters.

In The Little Mermaid, the song’s lyrics are sung by Sebastian the crab as he encourages Prince Eric to kiss Ariel, who can’t talk because she traded her voice in order to become human for him.

“My oh my/ Look like the boy too shy/ Ain’t gonna kiss the girl,”
“Ain’t that sad?/ It’s such a shame/ Too bad/ You’re gonna miss the girl.”
“Don’t be scared/ You better be prepared/ Go on and kiss the girl.”

The song unambiguously encourage men to make physical advances on women without obtaining their clear consent.
Removed from its cushioning context of mermaids, magic, and PG ratings, the message comes across as even more jarring,

We now have an announcement trailer for the new Mortal Kombat 11 set to arrive on April 23, 2019. There will be a community reveal event on January 17th that will most likely reveal some initial gameplay.

Pre-orders for the game begin today for console and PC and include Beta access and a surprise character shown in the video.

Scorpion is so played out. Bring back the true star of Mortal Kombat.

Indiewire's 10 (4) Best Movie Scores of 2018

There were several great movie soundtracks released in 2018, and we've spent a lot of time talking about them, but what about the music from film without vocals? Indiewire has come up with the 10 best instrumental (sorry, Thom Yorke) movie scores of the year.  Here are four of their ten choices, with sample clips and a link to each full album on Spotify - check out the rest at the source.

8. Annihilation (Ben Salisbury, Geoff Barrow)



Annihilation came out early this year to mixed reviews, but the soundtrack was widely appreciated by those who enjoyed the film. It's haunting, eerie and downright unsettling, and I searched for it the minute I got home from the theater. Check out the full score here.



6. Hereditary (Colin Stetson)



The sense of foreboding you feel watching Hereditary is accented by the score. This track sounds pleasant enough until the dissonance kicks in, at which point you realize that no, no, it's not pleasant at all. Check out the full score here.


5. If Beale Street Could Talk (Nicholas Britell)



The score for Beale Street blends perfectly with the film's visuals, with the tracks evoking the same sort of melacholic beauty. This clip has samples from tracks throughout the album. Check out the full album here.


1. You Were Never Really Here (Jonny Greenwood)



Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, responsible for last year's amazing Phantom Thread soundtrack, makes another incredible contribution to film with his score for Lynne Ramsey's You Were Never Really Here. Check out the full soundtrack here.

Ashley Judd's Talk Protested by Sex Work Activists

- Ashley Judd, who has consistently protested the normalisation of sex work and drawn attention to the prevalence of human trafficking, was protested giving a talk in Manhattan by sex work activists.
- Judd has called for the decriminalisation of sex work but the criminalisation of purchasing sex work.
- After being questioned at the talk, Judd expressed her support for sex workers but maintained her stance, saying that sex work is "paid sexual access", not consensual sex.
- Most of the protesters continued to be unimpressed, though after the talk Judd went up to many of them, speaking to them and shaking their hands.

Belgium's Foreign-Language Oscar Submission, 'Girl,' Is a Danger to the Transgender Community

The near-unanimous praise for the film has been exclusively generated by critics who are not transgender.
The film isn’t just another case of irresponsible casting or harmful stereotypes.
If Girl takes home an Oscar, it would be a drastic step backwards for trans representation in Hollywood.
Directed by Lukas Dhont and co-written by him and Angelo Tigssens, both cisgender men.
A cisgender male actor was cast to play a teenage trans girl.

Kanye West made a surprise appearance at XXXTentacion's album release party in Miami, performing a number of songs and even having the late rapper's mother come on stage with him.

West has openly stated his support of XXXTentacion since his death earlier this year, recording a feature for his new album, and now even launching a mini-capsule collection devoted to him that will drop Friday.

Ed Razek, exec at L Brands (Victoria's Secret's parent company) explained in an interview for Vogue that no transwomen were allowed in the show because "the show is a fantasy".

YouTube Beauty Guru Nikita Dragun fired back at this remark with a male-gazy lingerie ad to show transwomen can sell a fantasy too.

Who went home on the premiere of Top Chef: Kentucky?

Quickfire challenge: The chefs were split into 5 teams of 3 and were given only two minutes to prep their ingredients and then 20 minutes to cook one dish as a team. The winning team won tickets to the 145th Kentucky Derby.

Elimination challenge: The teams from the quickfire stayed intact, but for the elimination challenge, they would be competing against each other to be up for the win, be safe, or be up for elimination. For the actual challenge itself, the chefs had free range to cook what they wanted for 200 Kentucky Derby VIPs. There were many hats.

ONTD Original: Songs you used to like but now hate

I don’t actually hate these songs on my list but I do have a real strong dislike for them. When I hear a few notes and lyrics from these songs (and many others) I get so irritated. Some of these songs might be your all-time favorite songs but to me I probably won’t feel sad if I never hear them again.

I had a lot of songs on my list for laziness I shorten that to just six, so here’s the list:


Yeah!– Usher featuring Ludacris and Lil’ Jon



Loved this song (along with the whole Confession album) but just hearing that first 5 seconds of this songs makes me change the channel/station so fast.


Baby Boy– Beyonce featuring Sean Paul



There are many good songs on Beyonce’s Dangerously in Love album but it seems radio stations and streaming sites tend to only play Baby Boy(and Me, Myself & I) too much.


Sexyback– Justin Timberlake



FutureSex/Lovesounds was a fantastic album but Sexyback is by far the worst song on the album and before Justin’s latest album (have no idea the title) was probably his worst song of any of his albums.


Hey Ya– Outkast



Of the whole list, this probably the song/artist I feel really bad about putting it on the list but….I really can’t stand to listen to Hey Ya anymore, I prefer I Like the Way You Move, their other hit song that came out the exact same time as Hey Ya.


I’m Real– Ja Rule & Jennifer Lopez



I loved this song so much in the early 2000s with its Rick James sample but now along with their other hit song (I think most know that song) I’m just so tired of hearing it.

Gold Digger– Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx



Just sticking to his old music from the mess that is Kanye West, I love the Late Registration album but I think Gold Digger is the weakest song on the album and when the album was out I would always (and still do) skip it.
