Vulture compiled a list of current nobodies who will become somebodies this award season, and here are 3 of their 7 picks.
1. Yalitza Aparicio from
RomaYalitza is a 24 year-old pre-school teacher from Mexico with no prior acting experience. She was worried that the audition for this film could potentially be a trafficking scam, and had to google Cuarón to see if he was legit. She plays Cleo, a stand-in for Libo, who was Alfonso Cuarón's own nanny, and has the potential to sneak into this awards season in the Best Actress category. But it's already pretty stacked, and she doesn't speak much English, so campaigning will be tough.
2. KiKi Layne from
If Beale Street Could TalkKiKi moved to LA and beat out 300 other girls for the part of Tish, with her only screen credit before this one being an episode of
Chicago Med. She's been delighted that so many designers are willing to work with her already, even though she only has a few thousand followers on Instagram. If she manages to get into the awards conversation, she'd be up for Best Actress, which has some steep competition this year.
3. Stephan James from

Stephan is a Canadian who has appeared in film and on TV before, playing Jesse Owens in
Race and appearing in
Selma,
Degrassi (pretty sure this is a requirement for Candian actors) and the upcoming
Homecoming. He will be campaigning for Best Actor for the role of Fonny, which some pundits have argued was the wrong category choice.
