15. "Bloody Mary" - Lady Gaga The screams, distorted vocal effects, and monk chants in the bridge makes "Bloody Mary" Gaga's creepiest song to date. Any other contenders from her? She had a whole ep/mini album/album called The Fame Monster. A TFM track for Halloween? Groundbreaking. 14. "Same Ol' Mistakes" - Rihanna Any other contenders from her?"Disturbia" (WRITTEN by a noted abuser) and some tracks off Rated R would be TOO pon de nose. "Same Ol' Mistakes" always sounded like it could be played in a 70's slasher film to me. 13. "Scary" - Britney Spears This is one of her lesser known Japanese bonus track'd songs but nonetheless a very club-friendly Halloween song. 12. "Seven Devils" - Florence and the Machine I have to admit I was introduced to this song by the show Revenge, but this could also be used in a horror movie. 11. "Sweet Dreams" - Beyonce Okay maybe nothing about this song necessarily screams 'Halloween' aside from the intro of this music video. But we SHAN'T forget the iconic 'MY GUILTY PLEASURE I AIN'T GOIN NOWHERE' krump move. Any other contenders from her? People might cite "Haunted" off self titled as a fitting song, but it's a little too ethereal for the occasion imo. 10. "Lolita" - Lana Del Rey Sad pop queen Lana has a whole bunch of dark songs throughout her catalog, but "Lolita" always gave me dramatic witchy vibes to it. Am I the only one? 9. "Zombie" - Natalia Kills I was gonna go with another unconventional choice because Perfectionist is full of relevant songs, but you can't go wrong with "Zombie". Long live Natalia Kills. 8. "Walking On Air" - Kerli A name you probably haven't heard in almost 10 years, Kerli served us illuminati & voodoo doll visuals wrapped up in a gothic lolita aesthetic for "Walking On Air". Does the ending of the video still creep me out? Maybe. A little. 7. "Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs The opening chords of "Heads Will Roll" make the song for me. Some flops out there associate the song with a certain remix, but the original will always be better. 6. "Velvet Rope" - Janet Jackson From an experimental masterpiece of an album, The Velvet Rope's title track samples Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", which is also the theme of The Exorcist. Any other contenders from her? To go in a tongue in cheek route you might also wanna play "Black Cat". 5. "Secret (Shh)" - Charli XCX Charli doesn't mention what's the #secret she's going to share, but the drawn out bass and bells makes the entire song feel like a suspense sequence of a movie. 4. "Many Moons" - Janelle Monae This song is tailored to the fictional character Cindi Mayweather and the dystopian world of Metropolis that Janelle Monae introduced us to. Nothin scarier than realizing we actually live in a world of political turmoil Janelle tells us about through a sci-fi lens. 3. "Birds of Prey (Reuben Wu Ladytron Remix)" - Christina Aguilera Ladytron member Reuben Wu remixed "Birds of Prey" and amped up the tempo of the original track. The chimey bells that were added can also depict a Christmas gone wrong type of scenario. 2. "Simon Says" - Allie X Allie X turned the childhood game of Simon says into a creepy song about being possessed and dependent in an imaginary being. Any other contenders from her?"Bitch" is her next closest dark synth pop anthem. 1. "Lost in the Girl" - Kwamie Liv From my research, Kwamie Liv is a Scandinavian artist, but this song has a direct French influence that sounds like it could have been produced by Stromae. The intro with Kwamie's low husky voice switches up to a bang of electronic synths and samples. What festive songs are you playing for this month? |
