RPatz is making the promotional rounds for his indie movie High Life. He posed at the San Sebastian Film Festival with his costar, Mia Goth.

If you'll recall, Robert Pattinson was engaged to FKA Twigs. FKA Twigs is now dating Shia Laboeuf, who was engaged to Mia Goth. So...his coworker's ex is dating his ex. AWKWARD.

Anyways, High Life is about a group of criminals subjected to sex experiments while traveling on a UFO. So, that sounds almost as weird as having your ex-fiancé date your coworker's ex-fiancé.

J. Cole Didn't Vote in 2016, "Glad Trump is President So America Can See Its Truth"

  • Rapper J. Cole is on the cover of this months Billboard magazine where he talks about numerous topics including cancel culture and working with the young crop of rappers to prepare them for fame.

  • The topic briefly turned to politics and J. Cole decided to give us a few quotables.

  • J. Cole is asked about Celebrity Drama and he says he stays off of twitter for those reasons but also that he "stays away from politics". The interviewer then asks him why,

  • J. Cole responds: "I don’t click the links. The headlines are enough. I understand there is a segment of politics where you have people -- and this is the part I respect -- who truly are trying to use it as a tool for change, and they devote their life to grassroots voter registration and shit like that. They’re living a life that’s unselfish. But the politics we’re talking about [slaps table] is Trump headlines. We’re really silly. Human beings are easily manipulated and distracted. You couldn’t have told anybody 10 years ago that this would be the landscape of American discourse. That these would be the topics of conversation: fucking Kardashian drama and Trump drama."

  • He then goes to on to admit he didn't vote in 2016 because "Hillary Clinton wasn’t somebody that was motivating me to go vote. If it was Bernie Sanders, I would’ve showed up and voted. I would’ve been the first one in line, no bullshit. No disrespect to Hillary."

  • He also says he doesn't lend his voice to politcians. (OP Note: J. Cole performed at a Hillary Clinton: Get Out the Vote Rally on November 4th, 2016)

  • The politics section ends with the interviewer asking if his opinion would change for the 2020 midterms. J. Cole says "The next election? It depends on who they put up there. Trust me, I hate to be a person who’s even promoting that I didn’t vote. Actually, with Trump in office, I love that America gets to see the truth. If Hillary Clinton was in office, it would be the most fucking disingenuous shit because everybody would be thinking that everything’s cool because we got an incredibly qualified female president. Which would’ve been amazing on so many levels. But all the shit we see right now would’ve still existed; it would’ve just been quiet. And I prefer this shit to be out loud. I prefer an honest America. I prefer the world seeing that, yes, we’re a country that is dumb enough -- no disrespect -- [that] we got duped into electing Donald Trump."

'Girls' star Jemima Kirke thanks Dr. Ford, reveals she was raped at 22

Jemima Kirke, best known for playing Jessa for all six seasons of Girls, recently posted on Twitter to thank Christine Blasey Ford for sharing her account of being sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Jemima also shared her own story of rape and victim blaming.

Jemima writes:

Oh Fuck it. When I was 22 I was raped by my drug dealer. After I kindly asked him to leave (I didn't want to make him angry) I dragged myself to the hospital. After the various std tests The dr said sympathetically, "you gotta start looking after yourself." I believed what he meant was "This could have been prevented if you weren't hanging out with a drug dealer."

It would seem that the responsibility was on me and for this reason I didn't tell anyone and I didn't report it. I was ashamed because I believed that what had happened to me was a result of having very little self worth, that this is what happens to drug addicts. This is wrong.

My rape had nothing to do with my choices. Drug dealers don't rape people anymore than a family man does. The rehab counselors didn't correct that belief. My own mother didn't correct it. fuck anyone who meant well but told me to look at this "as a sign" that I needed help.

It is likely that my daughter will one day be sexually assaulted. I can't prevent that. She can't prevent that. But no matter what the circumstances, it won't be her fault.

In an open letter to Porter Magazine, Meryl Streep praised the bravery and courage of female journalists everywhere, saying that “We need to protect, defend and thank the current crop of journalists around the world because they, their scruples and their principles are the front-line defences of free and informed people." She mentioned that journalists who are women are especially vulnerable and come under a specific sort of scrutiny online.

She also honoured the late Maltese journalist, Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated last year by a car bomb: “True bravery is Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, blown up in her car for reporting on the Panama Papers. I applaud and revere our female journalists — I love them, and their equally undaunted brothers.”

ONTD Reading Challenge (October): The Darkest Timeline

$
0
0

It's time for the October reading challenge! This month, read a dystopian or (post) apocalyptic book!

Here are 10 suggestions of books for this month. As always, these are just suggestions, and you're welcome to find a different title that better suits your taste. Don't forget to tell us all about it in the Goodreads group!

1. The Stand (Stephen King)

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death.

And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides or are chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abigail and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

2. The Rising (Brian Keene)

Nothing stays dead for long. The dead are returning to life, intelligent, determined…and very hungry. Escape seems impossible for Jim Thurmond, one of the few left alive in this nightmare world. But Jim’s young son is also alive and in grave danger hundreds of miles away. Despite astronomical odds, Jim vows to find him—or die trying.

Joined by an elderly preacher, a guilt-ridden scientist and an ex-prostitute, Jim sets out on a cross-country rescue mission. Together they must battle both the living and the living dead…and the even greater evil that awaits them at the end of their journey.

3. The Passage (Justin Cronin)

An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape—but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.

4. Battle Royale (Koushun Takami)

A class of 42 junior high school students are taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided with weapons and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing.

5. Roadside Picnic (Arkady & Boris Strugatsky)

Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone, again and again, until he finds the answer to all his problems.

6. A Canticle for Leibowitz (Walter Miller Jr)

In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes.

7. Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler)

When unattended environmental and economic crises lead to social breakdown, no one is safe.

In a night of fire and death, Lauren Olamina, the young daughter of a minister, loses her family and home and ventures out from their ravaged gated community into the unprotected American landscape.

But what begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: a startling vision of human destiny ... and the birth of a new faith.

8. The Children of Men (PD James)

The human race has become infertile, and the last generation to be born is now adult. Civilization itself is crumbling as suicide and despair become commonplace. Oxford historian Theodore Faron, apathetic toward a future without a future, spends most of his time reminiscing. Then he is approached by Julian, a bright, attractive woman who wants him to help get her an audience with his cousin, the powerful Warden of England. She and her band of unlikely revolutionaries may just awaken his desire to live . . . and they may also hold the key to survival for the human race.

9. Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel)

One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet.

10. Severance (Ling Ma)

Candace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine: her work, watching movies with her boyfriend, avoiding thoughts of her recently deceased Chinese immigrant parents. So she barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps the world.

Candace joins a small group of survivors, led by the power-hungry Bob, on their way to the Facility, where, Bob promises, they will have everything they need to start society anew. But Candace is carrying a secret she knows Bob will exploit. Should she escape from her rescuers?

David Cronenberg Turned Down Directing ‘Return Of The Jedi’

He received an offer to direct “Return of the Jedi”, which he immediately rejected.
“I still recall getting a phone call. Somebody said that they were from, I guess it was Lucasfilm, and asked me if I was interested in — at that point it was called ‘Revenge of the Jedi’, actually, until somebody pointed out that it was against Jedi philosophy to think in terms of revenge. I was asked if I would be interested in considering that, and meeting with everybody, and I said, with the arrogance of youth — relative youth, anyway — I said, ‘Well, I’m not used to doing other people’s material.’ And there was like a stunned silence and then ‘Click’ — hang up. Basically, that was as close as I came to that,”

He doesn't regret turning down the offer.
“No, not really, because, in a way that’s like doing one episode in a well-established TV series. The casting is fixed of the main characters — the look of it, the tone of it, people’s expectations for it, are all fixed. You are not involved in the creating of that. And therefore you’re a little bit more like a traffic cop than you are like, for me, what a creative director can be. So that’s why it wouldn’t have interested me, really.”

He offered an example, Alfonso Cuaron doing a ‘Harry Potter’ episode.
"if you didn’t know that Alfonso directed it, you wouldn’t be able to tell."
