Someone is trying to sabatoge Lana Del Rey's Oscar nomination

0
0

The Oscars short list for Best Original Song has only just been released, and already there are reports of an anonymous entity attempting to sabotage Lana Del Rey's chances at a statue. Deadline says members of the Academy's music selection committee have received mailers featuring a bogus article purported to be printed from the Variety site. The text claims The Great Gatsby song "Young and Beautiful" is disqualified due to a technicality over the film's release date.

But no such article exists and Warner Bros. insists Del Rey's song — and the four others submitted from the same soundtrack — is perfectly legit Academy members are currently tasked with cutting down the short list of 75 songs to a manageable number of actual nominations, to be announced January 16. Also from Gatsby: the xx's "Together," Florence + the Machine's "Over the Love," and Fergie, Q-Tip, and GoonRock's "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)."

Warner is apparently responding by creating a new featurette highlighting "Young and Beautiful." According to Billboard, this sort of thing has happened before, though usually involving the Best Picture candidates.

Demi gets upset over "fucked up" drinking joke on X-Factor finale

Demi Lovato was shocked and appalled at an insensitive segment on Thursday’s “X Factor” finale.

The show featured a digitally-altered compilation of clips showing the singer supposedly drinking a mysterious substance — a bizarre move given the judge’s public struggles with drugs and drinking.

The drink was “revealed” to be “Annoying Juice,” the supposed reason why Lovato frequently bickers with Simon Cowell.

Lovato looked furious as the intended joke fell flat, and could be seen mouthing, “That was f**ked up.”

Asked for her thoughts by Mario Lopez afterwards, the put-on-the-spot singer said through a forced smile, “I think it’s very, very clear since I don’t drink anymore ‘Annoying Juice’ has become my new drink and I love it because I get to annoy Simon with it.”

Kellan Lutz Is "Happily Single" and Therefore Not Dating Miley Cyrus

Hey, the paparazzi had to ask, right?

A day afterKellan Lutz arrived in Miami on the same private plane as Miley Cyrus, inquiring minds wanted to know if he and the 21-year-old pop princess were an item.

"You guys are stupid," he said, smiling, as he signed autographs for fans at LAX after flying home from Miami, an exchange caught on video by X17online.

So he's not dating Miley, then?

"No, I'm happily single," the 28-year-old Twilight heartthrob replied. "I am very focused on work."

So, chalk the Kellen-Cyrus sighting up to just a couple of celebs enjoying the same mode of first-class travel.

A source told E! News yesterday that the two were "definitely not a couple." In between gigs, Miley had spent the weekend in the Bahamas with pal Cheyne Thomas (because jetting off to an island for a few days because they can is something else that celebs are wont to do).

And like Lutz, who's up next on the big screen playing the title role in Hercules: The Legend Begins, Cyrus is way focused on her work.

She's been all over the country performing at various Jingle Balls, and she tweeted yesterday that the video for "Adore You," the next single off of Bangerz, is coming soon.

Who do you think Miley should date next, ONTD?

Britney's "Piece Of Me" show will be an A-list event with some of the biggest names in music attending opening night next Friday, December 27 at the newly-named Axis theater inside Planet Hollywood.

“It’s a whole new experience, a complete cosmetic transformation,” Jason Gastwirth, senior VP of marketing and entertainment, tells the Las Vegas sun of the newly renovated theater.

Execs promised fans will experience a nightclub-like atmosphere in the newly opened up lobby area and VIP table service alongside the Axis’ new dance zone.

“It’s a theater now with a dance floor. It’s a theater now with a lobby that’s the equivalent of a club experience,” Gastwirth continued. “In addition to the new VIP seating booths, there’s new flooring, new carpeting. The sound system has been entirely revamped, so it’s the most up-to-date technology anywhere in the world.

“On top of that, we have the latest innovations in LED technology that is way beyond crystal clear and wraps the audience inside the massive projections above the stage, in front of them and down its sides. We’re certainly the first in America with all of this and maybe the world.”

Her stage is twice the size of any basic bitch on tour. She's using an elevated anchor-shaped lip to strut out onto the dance floor.

“So close, in fact, Britney and all the stars who perform there will be able to see every face in the audience,” said her manager, Larry Rudolph. “It’s extraordinary because people just aren’t used to seeing her so up close in what appears such an intimate setting.”

Britney added: “I wanted the feeling that fans would be in the show with me. It’s such a cool set-up, and we have the party vibe really going on between us. I wanted to bring the best with a real entertainment show, and we have a great production.”

The LED screens will emmerse fans into the performance, showcasing different scenery for each song.

feat-pom-stage“It’s a massive production with 14 dancers, incredible choreography, amazing costumes, huge sound and a four-piece rock band for her solos. It’s a true Las Vegas residency show the likes of which have never been seen on the Strip before,” said a source.

“Britney wanted perfection, and she’s got it. She’s been rehearsing around the clock since she got into town. She may well be the hardest-working woman in showbiz. She says that she loves her theater, loves the show, loves everything about the entire experience. She’s enjoying every moment of it. She’s confident and radiantly happy.”

Show director Baz Halpin, who spent more than four months to design the lighting, visuals and production for the show, brought Britney's vision to the stage.

“Call it a visual variety show touching on all the things that excite her — pieces of her imagination, pieces of her life and even pieces of her dreams,” he said. Britney added: “Baz inspires total trust and confidence.”

Caesars Entertainment Chairman and CEO Gary Loveman says it changes the demographic of Las Vegas: “It’s the next great step forward in entertainment for us after the 10-year success story at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace.”

They believe this will bring in a younger generation to experience Las Vegas.

“We now have the heart of her fans ages 25 and older into their early 30s, while Celine, Shania, Rod and Sir Elton have the 40-year-upward crowd. It’s a new younger audience that will not just come in for a one-night arena show. They’ll be here for a few days, and that solidly builds the future of Las Vegas,” I was told.

Celebrities expected on opening night include Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Sia, DJ Pauly D and Adam Lambert. More stars are being added, and more will attend different shows in her first run through Feb. 22.

“We are extremely pleased with Britney’s ticket sales,” Gastwirth said. “Genuinely happy. That’s why we released ticket sales and dates for her second run. It’s a total validation of her success and strength. You only have to wait a few days more to see all the excitement. You’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s going to blow your mind.”

Sexist of the Year 2013 is...... Robin Thicke

0

robin thicke 1
The singer Robin Thicke has been named sexist of the year by a body representing dozens of women's groups around the UK.

The singer achieved fame and notoriety on the back of his single Blurred Lines, which was accompanied by a video in which he was surrounded by naked dancing models and has been condemned as suggesting date rape is acceptable.

Thicke topped the voting in a poll conducted by the End Violence Against Women Coalition. David Cameron, Britain's prime minister, was runner-up for the second successive year.

The coalition – which has more than 60 member groups working to end sexual and domestic violence, trafficking and other forms of abuse – also highlighted comments Thicke had made in interviews.

Speaking to GQ magazine, he said:"People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before'."

The coalition said it would be sending Thicke a voucher to enable him to download Aretha Franklin's hit song Respect as a prize.

Sarah Green of the End Violence Against Women Coalition pointed out that Thicke's video had created such a backlash that it had actually had the effect of fuelling a campaign against videos using sexist imagery.

"Our heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner Robin Thicke for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop."

"Sexism might be de rigeur for some music industry 'creatives' but the times they are a-changin'."

6 (3) Great Performances By Black Actors In 2013

0
0

In the past few months there has been some discussion about whether 2013 marked a “renaissance” in that hard-to-pin-down genre known as “black film”. It’s been established, of course, that while we did get movies like The Butler, Baggage Claim, Best Man Holiday and 12 Years a Slave, to lump all those films under ghettoizing terms, like, for instance, “race-themed,” was to ignore the diversity in the kinds of stories being told, and ultimately downplay the fact that we actually still have a very long way to go.

There are movies telling black stories, our stories, that I’ve loved this year, films that have easily found a spot on my "best of" lists, including Let the Fire Burn, La Pirogue, and Fruitvale Station. But for me, 2013 was an important year not in the volume of projects starring black people (as earlier revealed only 7% of the films released this year were “black films”), but in the number of great performances across both film and TV. Again, we’re not “there” yet, but still, something must be said for the dynamic characters and featured players that emerged in 2013.

Below is a list, in no particular order, of some of the performers who stood out.

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in ‘Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom’

Apparently, before he died, Nelson Mandela got to see a cut of Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom and asked, “Is that me?” as he watched Idris Elba playing him. It’s a high compliment to an actor who himself has admitted that physically, his casting as the iconic South African figure was a bit of a stretch. While the film itself is flawed, Elba’s take on Madiba is perhaps the most effective, as compared to actors Terrence Howard and Morgan Freeman. He may look drastically unlike Mandela, but the care that Elba took to imitate the former president’s accent, even the tenor of his voice, is more than impressive. And where Freeman and Howard represent the more benign qualities of Mandela’s international persona, Elba, as only he can, has been able to convey the swagger and the gravitas that drew so many to the anti-apartheid cause. He’s Mandela not as the kindly grandfather figure but as the young, brash, and impassioned activist willing to fight for his freedom by any means necessary.

Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau in ‘American Horror Story: Coven’

In October, I expressed some concerns over the handling of race and the legacy of slavery on Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Coven. The biggest fear was that the real-life history of Madame LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) would be downplayed or ignored in the process of somehow redeeming her. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened. And in that process of turning the racist, slave-torturing LaLaurie into a kindly old lady who just made some mistakes, the two black characters on the show, Queenie and Marie Laveau, have become outcasts and villains. I’m not even going to begin to unpack my biggest issues with their treatment here, but I will say this: Angela Bassett continues to prove that she is a badass and a phenomenal actress. If one peruses the “Coven” tag on Tumblr, you may see a lot of gifs of the now infamous “Surprise, bitch, I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me!” line, but equally as popular are gifs of Bassett’s epic delivery of just two words: “Disrespectin’ me.” The delivery is kind of emblematic of her entire run on this season: taking a mediocrely written character and squeezing out what dregs of substance and complexity that she can. While Jessica Lange has often been the standout in previous seasons, it’s Bassett as the cool, calculating Laveau who truly shines in an array of stellar female performances.

Uzo Aduba as Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren in ‘Orange is the New Black’

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Julianne Hough’s racist and seriously misguided use of blackface in her Halloween costume this year, other than the whole racist part, was what an affront it was to the spirit of the much loved character Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren on Netflix’s breakout hit, Orange is the New Black. When we first meet Suzanne, as with many of the characters in this imperfect but promising comedy drama, she’s painted simply as Piper Chapman’s insane stalker who throws pies and pees on floors, but there are layers to Suzanne that Aduba reflects beautifully. It’s not just her aesthetic, the tiny bantu knots and bugged out eyes and hunched posture that for people like Hough are the beginning and end of of character. It’s the way she talks, the way at moments she’ll give us glimpses of a kind of sanity and certainly depth. It’s in the delivery of lines like, “Sometimes the feelings inside me get messy like dirt. And I like to clean things. And the dirt is the feelings. The floor is my mind.” The character has been treated as a sort of novel curiosity because of her physical and emotional idiosyncratic, but there’s nothing novel about the bravery and honesty with which Aduba approaches her.

1D Break MJ's UK Record

One Direction have broken a UK sales record with their latest DVD release.

The boyband released their documentary and live concert movie This Is Us yesterday (December 19), and sold over 170,000 DVD/Blu-ray copies during the first day, reports The Official Charts Company. It marked the biggest first-day sales for a music DVD/Blu-ray ever in UK chart history.

The previous record holder was Michael Jackson's This Is It, which sold 109,000 copies across two days upon its release in February 2010. Take That are in third place with their The Circus Live selling 95,000 copies across two days back in November 2009.

What's more, One Direction's This Is Us has also topped the overall DVD chart for the week after just 24 hours on sale. It has beaten blockbuster releases such as Man of Steel, Despicable Me 2 and Manchester United film The Class Of '92 to the top spot. "It has been quite a year for 1D and their fans - and they are continuing that right through into Christmas," said Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot.

"Every act goes into the festive season hoping to secure the Official Christmas Number 1 album, but if they manage to pull off the album and video double at such a competitive time of the year - that will be some achievement.

"If current performance is maintained, we could be looking at a 1D Christmas in 2013!"

Chance The Rapper Performs On Arsenio, Calls For Peace In Chicago

Chance the Rapper’s star is on the rise. Following his collaboration with Justin Bieber, the 20-year-old Chicago MC made his late-night television debut on Thursday’s “Arsenio.” Sporting a Chicago White Sox varsity jacket, he lit up the stage with an energetic performance of “Chain Smoker” off his acclaimed mixtape Acid Rain.

During his interview with Arsenio, he spoke about openingfor Eminem, the violence in his hometown, and starting a union for rappers.

“Rappers need dental, rappers need health,” he said. “There’s certain benefits that don’t come with being an artist and it’s mainly rappers. … If we could just start a union, I think it would definitely work for the best.”

Earlier this week, he shot a video for his Bieber collaboration “Confident.”

The original version on the mixtape sounds a lot better than it does live but he looks like he is having fun on stage.

Vogue's Best Dressed of 2013

0
0

In making our list of the Best Dressed of 2013, we try to hit every category that stood out this year: the red-carpet queen, the enfant terrible, the aristo-boho, the rule-breaker, the sultry French girl. We’ve got our bases covered—it’s up to you whose style you aspire toward.

Cate Blanchett
No matter the occasion, the Blue Jasmine star greets the red carpet triumphant, always nailing the daunting combination of fashion-forward and timeless elegance.

Rihanna
The pop queen is a sartorial volcano liable to erupt at any moment in the most fabulous anytime-anywhere ensembles imaginable. She laughs at the phrase dress code, opting for maned and sequined Tom Ford or printed Christopher Kane sweats for a sidewalk jaunt.

Léa Seydoux
The young star of Blue Is the Warmest Color possesses that unnamable Gallic je ne sais quoi in both her performances and her offscreen style. She adds insouciance to Louis Vuitton sequins and meets President Hollande with a scarf artfully knotted at her neck.

Cara Delevingne
Fashion’s enfant terrible is more Terry Richardson than the models he shoots when it comes to her off-the-runway ensembles. No sleek monochrome or doleful pouts here, the cheeky model of the moment puts the belle in rebel.

Kerry Washington
The Scandal star is the way American women dream of dressing. Whether in flirty little frocks or romantic red-carpet confections, she is every woman’s aspirational ideal.

Of course Best Dressed of 2013 is about looking back but it’s also about looking ahead and as 2014 rolls in, it’s these ten women who we’ll have our eye on. Get ready to watch them on red carpets, sidewalks and silver screens the world over.

Lupita Nyong’o
She stole every red-carpet heart this fall with her clean silhouettes, close-cropped coif and ear-to-ear smile. The 12 Years a Slave star brought the same radiance and poise to her wardrobe as her Golden Globe–nominated performance.

Adèle Exarchopoulos
No one does hot mess quite like the French and Blue Is the Warmest Color’s brilliant star is this year’s sultriest export. With morning-after hair and the most voluptuous pout it’s no wonder she steals Léa Seydoux’s heart in the film.

Ciara
Not every pop princess could ricochet from a wide-leg Calvin Klein Collection tuxedo one night to wool bouclé Carven the next. Taken under Riccardo Tisci’s wing, the R&B star is at her coolest in head-to-toe Givenchy, but is fine-feathered no matter what she wears.

Iggy Azalea
A very different Iggy showed up at the Chloé spring 2014 show this fall―all buttoned-up pastels, it was a far cry from the foul-mouthed, take-no-prisoners rapper fans see onstage, proving that her sartorial range is as impressive as her music.

Kiernan Shipka
Little Sally Draper is all grown-up―almost! The fourteen-year-old actress hits the perfect note of fashion forward and age-appropriate; with pretty princess lines and embellished details, she is a consistent straight-A student on the red carpet, and, we hope, in the classroom.

Kanye West Responds to Anti-Semitism Accusation, Calls Comments "An Ignorant Compliment"

0
0

Kanye West was recently subject to criticism from the Anti-Defamation League, who accused him of anti-Semitism after comments in a radio interview. In the interview, Kanye said "Black people don't have the same level of connections as Jewish people." The Anti-Defamation League called it "classic anti-Semitism," adding "There it goes again, the age-old canard that Jews are all-powerful and control the levers of power in government."

Now, Kanye has responded to these accusations in conversation with Chicago radio station B96 (via Radio.com). He called the comment an "ignorant compliment" and said it was misconstrued. "I don’t know how being told that you have money is like an insult," Kanye said. "That would be like if somebody complimented black guys and said, ‘All black guys have big penises.’ You don’t want to be the black guy who raises his hand and says like, ‘That’s not true. I have proof!’"

In the interview, Kanye also mentioned that he is hoping to potentially record with Frank Ocean, the Weeknd, and James Blake. He's at work on his Adidas line for now, which will include shoes as well as men's and women's clothing. He told B96 that the items will be on sale in September 2014, and that Adidas will give him "stand-alone stores."
