We all have suffered heartbreak, so we know how it feels like and all the stages to get through it, artists use that pain and sorrow to make art about it, and hispano-american singers are not different, we are very dramatic and a bit extra and passionate about things, so of course our heartbreak songs (despecho or desamor like we call it) are going to be like that, and that makes you to either cry your heart out every time you hear them (especially after a bad breakup) or being angry/getting the confidence to once and for all end that shitty relationship that was taking a toll on you.
So here we have a list of despecho songs, some are for that period of time when you just want to cry and express all your pain and some are for that period of time where you are like “fuck them” with your ex and realize you are better without them, all of the songs are damn good , so, enjoy!!!
La Copa Rota- José FelicianoLa Copa Rota has a salsa versión (made by Alci Acosta) and a rock? One made by Andres Calamaro, but in my opinion the best one that truly captures the sadness and angst of the lyrics is this one, José Feliciano has a beautiful voice and yes it’s kinda sad when you butcher this song in the karaoke but who cares? You are just expressing your pain.
The part that punches you in the heart:“Mozo, sírvame la copa rota
Sírvame que me destroza esta fiebre de obsesión
Mozo, sírvame la copa rota
Quiero sangrar gota a gota el veneno de su amor”
Fue un placer conocerte – Rocío Durcal and Juanga (Dios lo tenga en su gloria)Rocío Durcal and Juanga made an amazing duo, the most iconic songs sang by Rocío were written by JuanGa, both have amazing voices, both are hispano-american icons, yeah Rocío was born in Spain but a lot of people don’t know that/ignore it because she got famous in México, and both of them are known for their songs about love and heartbreak, when will your faves?
The part that pierces your heart:“Si me hubieras querido
cuando yo te pedía
que me amaras un poco,
que me hicieras feliz,
yo me hubiera quedado
para siempre contigo;
pero no fue posible,
y hoy me tengo que ir ”
Déjame llorar – Ricardo Montaner
Ricardo Montaner has a lot of iconic songs and him and his sons write for other artists (his sons wrote vente pa’ca) so the guy is a legend in hispanoamerica and knows how to write, you can feel the pain in the lyrics and the sadness.
The part that reminds you how good it was and how everything fell apart: "Cuántas nostalgias durmiendo en el desván
He declarado mi vida en soledad
Hago canciones de amor que nunca olvido
Pues sobre nubes de otoño las escribo solo
Millones de hojas cayendo en tu cuerpo
Otoños de llanto goteando en tu piel"
Un Buen Perdedor - Franco de Vita This power ballad and (like Mexicans say) rolononon made by italo-venezuelan singer Franco de Vita is a great song and every person you know has heard it and probably has sung it con sentimiento, it’s a must for despechados whose ex broke up with them because another person.
The part that makes you cry like a baby:“Sin embargo esperaba
Que te quedaras pero
El agua hay que dejarla correr
Mientras yo me tragaba palabras
Que no pude decir
Claro que se perder
No será la primera vez
Hoy te vas tu, mañana me iré yo
Seré un buen perdedor
El mundo no cambiará
Alguien sin duda ocupe tu lugar”
No te hago falta – Ana GabrielMexican-chinese and (allegedly) lesbian queen Ana Gabriel is one of the most important artists in hispano-américa and like most of our iconic artists she sings about despecho and desamor, this song is powerful for the lyrics and her voice, it’s also a hit in karaokes.
The part that makes you cry:“Yo no te hago falta, eso ya lo se
Ni ahora ni mañana siempre ha sido así
Busco una salida, yo no se que hacer
Estoy desesperada, voy a enloquecer
Yo no te hago falta ni antes ni después,
Tu no sientes nada, es triste saber”
Rata de dos patas – Paquita la del BarrioThis is Paquita’s most famous song, nada que hacer, every person and their mothers have heard this song, your primo metalero even knows it and probably has sang it, with passion, you can’t help it to sing it everytime you hear it because it’s that good and expresses all the hate you have against that bastard who broke your heart
The part that speaks to your soul:
“Maldita sanguijuela
Maldita cucaracha
Que infectas donde picas
Que hieres y que matas
Alimaña
Culebra ponzoñosa
Deshecho de la vida
Te odio y te desprecio”
El último Adiós - Paulina RubioThis song isn’t sad at all so it’s for that time when you realize you were too good for that bastard so fuck him, even if thee begs you are not going to return, I don’t like la chica dorada that much but this song was a hit at the time and it’s so good for karaokes.
The part you sing with passion:“Aunque vengas de rodillas
Y me implores y me pidas
Aunque vengas y me llores
Que te absuelva y te perdone
Aunque a mi me causes pena
He tirado tus cadenas
Y te dedico esta ranchera
Por ser el último adiós”
Amigo en el baño de Kany García This ICONIC song was a hit because it talked about something we are not very open in latin-america: vibrators and female masturbation, yeah sometimes a vibrator is better than a man because it gives you pleasure and isn’t an asshole and at least makes you orgasm.
The best part: “Que fui a una tienda
mejor soy feliz
con mi amigo en el baño “
Pa'ti no estoy – Rosana All my straight female Friends have sang this song after they break up, it’s like THE “empowering break up song” for them, it’s for when you are over your ex and you want to let go all the resentment you have against them but still show him he ain’t shit, a hit when you are reunited with your female friends and want to talk shit about men.
The part my friends sing con ganas:“Yo Me voy a plantar al campo
O a la orilla, la marea
Deseo que todo te vaya de vicio
Me voy, ahí te quedas
Me voy a vivir tranquila
Sin pausa pero sin prisa
Deseo que todo te vaya de lujo
No espero visita
Así que no vayas
Que pa' ti no estoy
Yo pa' ti no estoy”
Honorable mentions:
Jesse & Joy- ¡Corre! (I don’t like this song but it was such a hit and everybody and their mothers here love it so it deserves a mention)
Me voy - Julieta Venegas
Mala gente de Juanes
Llueve por dentro – Luis Fonsi
Estoy Pensando - El Grupo Niche
