Weinstein Scandal Development: NY Gov. Cuomo has suspended his sexual assault investigation

0
0

-Last year, journalists revealed that Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer David Boies gave $10,000 to Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. after Vance declined to prosecute Weinstein on sexual assault charges.

-Cuomo declared that an investigation into Vance’s original decision to not prosecute Weinstein was necessary in May, but just this June 2018, Cuomo reversed his position, asking NY's Attorney General to suspend the investigation for six months

-It is now being reported that Boies’ law firm gave Cuomo’s campaign $25,000 SIX DAYS before Cuomo reversed his position

-Cuomo’s spokesperson said the investigation was suspended temporarily in order to avoid interfering with Vance’s ongoing prosecution of Weinstein, which was launched in May

-However, Buzzfeed’s report pointed out that as criminal proceedings against Weinstein could drag on for years, the attorney general’s investigation may effectively be suspended indefinitely.

Idris Elba defends Disney casting straight actor Jack Whitehall in gay role

0
0

In an interview with TimeOut London, Elba was asked for his opinion on the news about Disney's casting.

"Artistic licence is artistic licence. If an actor has the attributes to do something, they should be able to do it. They’re acting. You don’t necessarily have to be gay to play a gay character. Though you do have to be black to play a black character.

It’s like the debate about James Bond. It’s nonsense. It’s a fictional character. I’ve got mad respect for how Ian Fleming described him. He said he was a white guy, looked like this… That’s how it was written. But then there’s interpretation. If we were always bound by the confines that something has to be [one way], people would never have expanded on things and come up with some of the most genius ideas."

She glides easily between the world of silken elegance and that of sleaze and sudden savagery, equally at home in both; functional, deadly, and temporarily quiescent, like a folded razor.

On a humid April evening between storms, out walking just to stay sharp, she turns a corner and collides with a running woman, Catching the scent of clean, rain-soaked hair, Aud nods and silently tells the stranger Today, you are lucky, and moves on—when behind her house explodes, incinerating its sole occupant, a renowned art historian. When Aud turns back, the woman is gone.

Magpie Murders
by Anthony Horowitz

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway’s latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the bestselling crime writer for years, she’s intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan’s traditional formula has proved hugely successful. So successful that Susan must continue to put up with his troubling behavior if she wants to keep her job.

Conway’s latest tale has Atticus Pünd investigating a murder at Pye Hall, a local manor house. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but the more Susan reads, the more she’s convinced that there is another story hidden in the pages of the manuscript: one of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition, and murder.

A Spy in the House (The Agency #1)
by Y.S. Lee

Rescued from the gallows in 1850s London, young orphan (and thief) Mary Quinn is surprised to be offered a singular education, instruction in fine manners — and an unusual vocation. Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls is a cover for an all-female investigative unit called The Agency, and at seventeen, Mary is about to put her training to the test. Assuming the guise of a lady’s companion, she must infiltrate a rich merchant’s home in hopes of tracing his missing cargo ships. But the household is full of dangerous deceptions, and there is no one to trust — or is there?

Packed with action and suspense, banter and romance, and evoking the gritty backstreets of Victorian London, this breezy mystery debuts a daring young detective who lives by her wits while uncovering secrets — including those of her own past.

The Unquiet Dead (Rachel Getty & Esa Khattak #1)
by Ausma Zehanat Khan

Despite their many differences, Detective Rachel Getty trusts her boss, Esa Khattak, implicitly. But she's still uneasy at Khattak's tight-lipped secrecy when he asks her to look into Christopher Drayton's death. Drayton's apparently accidental fall from a cliff doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, particularly not from Rachel and Khattak's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases. But when she learns that Drayton may have been living under an assumed name, Rachel begins to understand why Khattak is tip-toeing around this case. It soon comes to light that Drayton may have been a war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995.

If that's true, any number of people might have had reason to help Drayton to his death, and a murder investigation could have far-reaching ripples throughout the community. But as Rachel and Khattak dig deeper into the life and death of Christopher Drayton, every question seems to lead only to more questions, with no easy answers. Had the specters of Srebrenica returned to haunt Drayton at the end, or had he been keeping secrets of an entirely different nature? Or, after all, did a man just fall to his death from the Bluffs?

BBC Faces Backlash For Casting Charlie Heaton As Elephant Man Instead Of Disabled Actor

0
0

The BBC is facing criticism from a disability charity for its decision to cast able-bodied Charlie Heaton as Joseph Merrick in its forthcoming adaptation of “The Elephant Man”.

“It’s disappointing that a disabled actor has not been cast in the remake of ‘The Elephant Man’, as it’s one of the most recognizable films to portray a disabled character. Disabled actors still often face huge barriers to break into the business. Not only are the roles few and far between but castings and locations are often not accessible. There is a massive pool of disabled talent being overlooked. The creative industries should be embracing and celebrating difference and diversity, not ignoring it.”

BBC's statement :
“‘The Elephant Man’ is an iconic drama that has had an important role to play in highlighting changing attitudes to disability and we are currently in the process of casting disabled actors in a variety of key roles.”

Marvel Studios President & MCU producer Kevin Feige to receive PGAs David O. Selznick Award

Just in time with next year's new 'popular film' Oscar category at the Academy Awards, the Producers Guild of America will be honoring Marvel's head Kevin Feige with the prestigious David O. Selznick Award at next year's PGA Awards, on January 19, 2019.

The PGA presidents had this to say on why Feige got the honor:

“Kevin Feige set for himself one of the most ambitious tasks ever attempted in cinematic storytelling, and then over-delivered on it. What Kevin has accomplished with Marvel Studios is one of the great success stories of this generation. And now, with ‘Black Panther’ and the upcoming ‘Captain Marvel,’ Kevin has broadened our entire industry’s expectations for what tentpole movies look like–in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience. We’re honored that he’s accepted the PGA’s David O. Selznick Award.”
