Recently, two of Lena Dunham's pets died-- a yorkie named Bowie, and a cat named Gia Marie. Bad luck, or something else?
Many people have criticized Lena for her treament of her animals. Let's take a look at the history of her pets... and whether she really is an irresponsible pet owner.
Unnamed newtAs a young child, Lena had a newt that she says choked to death on a bad worm.
Her mother's Sphynx catHer mother bought a Spnynx cat when Lena was a child.
Uno, Bruno, and DevoWhen Lena was 15, she brought home three pit bull puppies that a rescue group gave her in a cardboard box on the street. She named them Uno, Bruno, and Devo. Unsurprisingly, her parents did not let her keep the puppies in their apartment, which Lena says was a "one-room on Broadway." She returned them to the director of the rescue group.
Unnamed old-fashioned terrierLena's parents also bought an old-fashioned terrier from a breeder in Indiana and had it flown out to them in NYC. I can't find its name or picture anywhere.
IrmaIt's unclear when, but in her 20s, Lena got a Sphynx cat named Irma. Not clear whether adopted or purchased.
The saga ofLambyThis is long and complicated, but bear with me.
Lena adopted her mutt Lamby in 2013, even though her live-in boyfriend was allergic. She made a big deal of adopting a special needs dog from a shelter, which got her some public brownie points.
Lena was spotted at a restaurant ordering salmon and a side salad, then feeding it to Lamby. She even wrote a
New Yorker essay about Lamby's "neuroses."
In 2014, Lamby attacked Lena, literally biting her in the ass.
He also bit her at least two other times.
In 2017, Lena revealed on Instagram that she had struggled for four years with Lamby's aggression and behavioral issues. Training and medication did not help. She rehomed the dog to a facility in Los Angeles called The Zen Dog.

However,
people noticed some disparities in her story. Lena claimed that Lamby was abused as a puppy and had bad aggression, but the shelter that she adopted him from-- BARC Shelter --
denies this. The shelter said that Lamby came to them overmedicated and aggressive, but after a week he was fine.
In fact,
Lena visited Lamby four times in the shelter before adopting him, with staff watching, and the dog was peaceful. The shelter also says that Lena was taking Lamby to the set and green room of
Girls while it was filming, without any incident. BARC also says that
their contract has a requirement that dogs be returned to them instead of rehomed.
Dunham had apparently
taken Lamby to at least six vets, and
her dog trainer publiclyl defender her.The journalist Taffy Brodesser-Ackner, who is most famous for writing that notorious profile of Tom Hiddleston, even weighed in.
She said that her sister is a veterinarian who treated Lamby using acupuncture and Chinese herbs. (Is there a HIPAA for animals??)
Anyways, Lena responded on Intagram, but said she had nothing to apologize for.

Karen D'Amango and Susan SimmonsIn 2017, two new poodle puppies then made an appearance: Karen D'Amango, and Susan Simmons.
Lena has not mentioned whether she adopted them from a shelter or purchased them from a breeder, though two purebred poodle puppies would be rare to find in a shelter.
She debuted them by bringing them onto
The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, though the video has now been scrubbed from the internet.

Gia Marie CarangiIn 2018, Lena adopted a Sphynx cat and named her Gia Marie Carangi, after the model. But
Gia apparently had a heart condition that is common in Sphynx cats, and died in July 2018 at just nine months old.

BowieBowie was the 13-year-old Yorkshire Terrier of Lena's friend. The friend had a new baby, and the dog did not get along with it. Sadly, Bowie passed away 3 months after joining Lena.

CandyTwo months later, she got another Sphynx kitten named Candy. She posted on Instagram, welcoming the kitten into her "happy zoo."
