  • Rebecca Sugar says it has been “extremely difficult” for her to earn this kind of LGBTQ visibility on Steven Universe, but acknowledges that large strides have been made.

  • Every time she wanted to bring LGBT content to Steven Universe, she had to have a conversation with Cartoon Network execs.

  • Believes "People should be able to express themselves, especially sweet childhood love stories."

  • Hopes that people in countries that have censored Steven Universe were able to find the censored material.

  • Was willing to stop making Steven Universe if she wasn't able to represent herself and her team through the show.

  • "The other thing is that people would tell me often, “How are you getting these adult themes into your show?” And that would really strike me because love stories are not adult scenes. The idea that it is adult because it’s queer, the gravity of that started to set in for me and the fear I had growing up myself came into focus for me. The things that I felt I couldn’t talk about — even into my late 20s — came into focus for me. By including LGBTQIA content and characters in G-rated entertainment for kids, you tell kids when they’re young that they belong in this world. You can’t not tell them that. There can’t be only a certain group of kids that gets told someone will love you by all the entertainment that they see. It’s just so unfair. By the time I reached 2016, I felt the weight of it so powerfully I would’ve risked everything just to get to say this to you now in this moment."

ONTD's Kpop fave, BTS, shills for Nicki Minaj's new album on Twitter

For some bizarre reason, BTS has decided to promote Nicki Minaj's album (CLEAN version) on their twitter feed, tweeting "love nicki’s new album" to their 15.9 million followers.

For those who have been following BTS since before their American advancement, this might not come as much of a shock at all. However, BTS has rebranded, having long since left behind their supposed hip hop roots and ditching the overt misogyny of their earlier work (e.g. War of Hormones) in favour of radio-friendly songs and more subtle takes on misogyny (e.g. 21st Century Girl). Gone are the days of cornering girls in music videos (Boy in Luv); these days, BTS just wants you to #LOVEYOURSELF and buy all four versions of each of their albums.

As part of their most recent album series, #LOVEYOURSELF, they've also become the face of a UNICEF campaign (#LOVEMYSELF) against "violence toward children and teens around the world, with the hope of making the world a better place through music."

Why does this matter? In addition to bankrolling her brother in his unsucessful fight against child rape charges, Nicki Minaj also recently collaborated with "convicted sex criminal" and child pornographer 6ix9ine.

No word yet as to whether or not Nicki Minaj will similarly promote BTS' new album to her 20.2 million followers when it drops next week.

Pitchfork says Nicki Minaj is normalizing predatory behavior by supporting abusers

Pitchfork published an article today titled "Nicki Minaj, 6ix9ine, and the Alarming Normalization of Predatory Behavior" in which the publication calls out Minaj for shamelessly working with known abusers like 6ix9ine (who was convicted of three felony counts of “use of a child in a sexual performance” in 2015)

- Wonders how much the pressure to remain relevant with a younger audience factored into her decision to work with a pedophile.
- Points out her previous anti-child-abuse views and her contradictory decision to support a child abuser.
- Says Minaj's massive power and influence only helps normalize predatory behavior. ("This normalization is in full effect when people make excuses for sexual predators who also happen to be their favorite entertainers. You also see this form of regularization when 6ix9ine gains the support of someone as powerful as Nicki Minaj.")
- Notes Minaj needs to be mindful of the message she sends the millions of young people who support her music, as well as victims of abuse, regardless of whether that level of social responsibility seems “unfair” to her.

J.J. Redick Says There Was A Girl/Woman in a "Box or Cage" In The Back of His NYC Car Service Ride

NBA Star J.J. Redick shared a bizarre story on his podcast on Thursday. He claimed that he was taking a car service in Manhattan with his wife, Chelsea, and her sister, Kylee, and they discovered a person in a "box or cage" under a blanket in the back of the car.

He describes the person as small with a blonde ponytail, possibly a child. They asked the driver to pull over and quickly exited the car with their belongings.

He contacted the car service company, which suspended the driver, and police, who he says he hasn't heard back from.

After they exited the car, Redick says he questioned the driver:

“Sir, I think there’s a person in your back seat.”

So he lifts the blanket up, but like toward the window so that the blanket is facing up so we wouldn’t see, because we were on the sidewalk perpendicular to the car, not behind the car. He’s like, “No, there’s nothing in here. There’s nothing in here.” He closes the blanket back, and then he closes the trunk. And as he’s walking around to the front seat, a head popped up.

No, this is not funny. There’s a back of a females head. She has blonde hair, there’s a pony tail, and based on the size of the box or cage that this person is in, it’s like either a very small human or a child.

We all saw it. So he drives off.

Kylee now, at this point, it’s like, “Are you sure? Was that a dog? Was that a dog with like a very furry tail?” And she’s like, “No. The reason I said there was a person is because I saw movement in my peripheral — out of my right eye. So I turned around and the blanket was moving. So when I looked back, like half of a human face came out of the blanket. I saw a woman’s eyes, woman’s face, woman’s blonde hair.”

(OP's note: He described the car they were in as a Cadillac Escalade SUV, so he seems to be talking about seeing this person in the storage area behind the back seat and not an actual trunk of a car)

The symbolism of the mahjong scene in Crazy Rich Asians explained!

A very pivotal scene in Crazy Rich Asians takes place over a game of mahjong. If you're someone like me, who's never played mahjong, you could understand what was going on in the scene through the dialogue but you would have missed the symbolism of the game how it added to the conversation.

Vox breaks it down:


  • The four sides of a mahjong table are named after compass directions. Eleanor sits in the "East" seat and Rachel sits in the "West" seat representing their different perspectives

  • In Cantonese there is an expression similar to the term "banana" in the west which translates to "empty bamboo" and which means a person who has an Asian appearance but was raised in the west, hence the reason that an 8 of bamboo was the piece Rachel was holding onto and looking at in the scene

  • The 8 of bamboo piece is the final piece that Rachel discards which allows Eleanor to win which is why she flips over her tiles

  • BUT even though she lost Rachel flips over her tiles to reveal to the whole table that the 8 of bamboo piece ALSO was the piece that would have allowed her to win. Discarding it shows that she had the power in the game and she let Eleanor "win" over her the same way she turned down Nick and let Eleanor "win" him because she had his best interest at heart and sacrificed for him so he wouldn't have to choose between her and his family.

  • Director Jon M. Chu brought in a gambling expert to choreograph the game, he stresses that a game like that would never happen so quickly but they took some liberties for the movie

-Kirstie is proclaimed "President of CBB!" and starts off her presidency by ordering some nachos and guacamole. BB lets Kirstie and her Veep pass 3 presidential orders: 1 housemate must take cold showers, 1 housemate must be on a green vege liquid diet, and 1 housemate must swap their suitcase with a foreign country and wear whatever is in the suitcase.

-Natalie "The Chin" Nunn rips her dress apart so she can enjoy the hot tub and bonds with Chloe over her kidnapping.

-Sally and Chloe talk with Ben about getting married at 1st sight.

-Natalie and Rodrigo discuss the hot men that are in the house and later discuss Dans former relationship with Gabby. Rodrigo lets Dan and the girls know that he doesnt like white boys, he like n***** (black) boys x2 and properly gets reamed by Big Brother.

-Dan states the obvious about getting sleep which causes one of the male houseguests to go on a 5 minute "obvious" rant that cracks up the house while they try to sleep which pisses off Chloe.

Laura Lee's got worse, because people called her out on the fact that she was blaming her racism on being from Alabama, and the tweets being from 6 years ago (which makes her.... 23.) Annnnyyway... Meanwhile, Manny and Nikita were still silent. Honestly I believe Nikita posted something too, but it's so shitty and irrelevant I don't want to include it.

-Jonathan had just filed the restraining order today, blocking visitation with their 2 children, as well as their dog Chaos

  • Renée Zellweger is going ✈ Netflix. The Academy Award-winning actress will star in a new original drama series titled "What/If" created by Mike Kelley (creator of ABC's REVENGE). The press release describes the show as a "social thriller that explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season will tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life." The show will be executive produced by Mike Kelley and Robert Zemeckis from Warner Bros. Television.
