Jimmi Simpson on 'the awfulness of men' and more

From the interview:

  • Jimmi and his best friend James Roday (Psych) are writing a movie for Blumhouse (Get Out, Paranormal Activity, Insidious) that is a "dissection of the awfulness of men," making a horror movie out of "the damage they do without even understanding it."

  • Though they started working on it a few years ago, the movie garnered support from producers only once #MeToo happened because it became more relevant from a business standpoint.

  • Jimmi and James are the only men working on the project; all other roles are filled by women.

  • They opted out of their star salaries to ensure even distribution of funds, hoping to set an industry standard: "It’s not just 'We want to make a horror movie.' We don't want to just say something, but actually do something."

  • Season 1 of Westworld was about revealing that William became the Man in Black. Season 2 reveals it wasn't really a transformation at all; he wasn't a "perfect man turned monster," but he had been the same man from the start: "He is an archetypical man, in that he was trained in one element of expectation and when that doesn’t happen...'Fuck it, I’m gonna blow shit up.' I think the commentary is that many men have that potential to jump out of their skin when they’re told 'No.'"

  • Jimmi wants to use his privilege to say something worthwhile while he has a platform: "I tell my agent and manager, 'Hey, people seem to care about me and what I’m doing right now. Let's take this opportunity and only do stuff that matters a little bit, that says something, that’s not just mindless entertainment.' I just want to be a healing part of the world. I know that chaos is a given and everything is falling apart, so I don’t want to add to it."

Spoilers for the most recent episode of Westworld at the source.

10 (5) Books to Help You Understand the Universe

We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe

Humanity's understanding of the physical world is full of gaps. Not tiny little gaps you can safely ignore —there are huge yawning voids in our basic notions of how the world works. PHD Comics creator Jorge Cham and particle physicist Daniel Whiteson have teamed up to explore everything we don't know about the universe: the enormous holes in our knowledge of the cosmos. Armed with their popular infographics, cartoons, and unusually entertaining and lucid explanations of science, they give us the best answers currently available for a lot of questions that are still perplexing scientists, including:

* Why does the universe have a speed limit?
* Why aren't we all made of antimatter?
* What (or who) is attacking Earth with tiny, superfast particles?
* What is dark matter, and why does it keep ignoring us?

It turns out the universe is full of weird things that don't make any sense. But Cham and Whiteson make a compelling case that the questions we can't answer are as interesting as the ones we can.

A Brief History of Time

A landmark volume in science writing by one of the great minds of our time, Stephen Hawking’s book explores such profound questions as: How did the universe begin—and what made its start possible? Does time always flow forward? Is the universe unending—or are there boundaries? Are there other dimensions in space? What will happen when it all ends?

Told in language we all can understand, A Brief History of Time plunges into the exotic realms of black holes and quarks, of antimatter and “arrows of time,” of the big bang and a bigger God—where the possibilities are wondrous and unexpected. With exciting images and profound imagination, Stephen Hawking brings us closer to the ultimate secrets at the very heart of creation.

Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space

In 1916, Einstein predicted the presence of gravitational waves. One century later, we are recording the first sounds from space, evidence of the waves’ existence caused by the collision of two black holes. An authoritative account of the headline-making discovery by theoretical astrophysicist and award-winning writer Janna Levin, Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space recounts the fascinating story of the obsessions, aspirations, and trials of the scientists who embarked on an arduous fifty-year endeavor to capture these elusive waves

Five decades after the experiment was dreamed up, the team races to intercept a wisp of sound with two colossal machines, hoping to succeed in time for the centenary of Einstein’s most radical idea. With unprecendented access to the surprises, disappointments, achievements, and risks in this remarkable story, Janna Levin’s absorbing account offers a portrait of modern science that is unlike anything we've seen before.

The Hidden Reality

There was a time when "universe" meant all there is. Everything. Yet, a number of theories are converging on the possibility that our universe may be but one among many parallel universes populating a vast multiverse. Here, Briane Greene, one of our foremost physicists and science writers, takes us on a breathtaking journey to a multiverse comprising an endless series of big bangs, a multiverse with duplicates of every one of us, a multiverse populated by vast sheets of spacetime, a multiverse in which all we consider real are holographic illusions, and even a multiverse made purely of math--and reveals the reality hidden within each.

Using his trademark wit and precision, Greene presents a thrilling survey of cutting-edge physics and confronts the inevitable question: How can fundamental science progress if great swaths of reality lie beyond our reach? The Hidden Reality is a remarkable adventure through a world more vast and strange than anything we could have imagined.

Once Before Time

In 2000, Martin Bojowald, then a twenty-seven-year-old post-doc at Pennsylvania State University, used a relatively new theory called loop quantum gravity—a cunning combination of Einstein’s theory of gravity with quantum mechanics—to create a simple model of the universe. Loop quantum cosmology was born, and with it, a theory that managed to do something even Einstein’s general theory of relativity had failed to do—illuminate the very birth of the universe.

Ever since, loop quantum cosmology, or LQC, has been tantalizing physicists with the idea that our universe could conceivably have emerged from the collapse of a previous one. Now the theory is poised to formulate hypotheses we can actually test. If they are verified, the big bang will give way to the big bounce. Instead of a universe that emerged from a point of infinite density, we will have one that recycles, possibly through an eternal series of expansions and contractions, with no beginning and no end.

Bojowald’s major realization was that unlike general relativity, the physics of LQC do not break down at the big bang. The greatest mystery surrounding the origin of the universe is what cosmologists call the big bang “singularity”—the point at the beginning of the universe, prior to the existence of space and time, when gravity, along with the temperature and density of the universe, becomes infinite. The equations of general relativity can’t cope with such infinities, and as a result big bang theory has never been able to give any explanation for the initial condition of our universe, succeeding only in describing and explaining the evolution of the universe from that instant onward. Bojowald’s theory takes us right up to the first moment of the universe—and then back, even before the big bang itself.

Sonic The Hedgehog Movie: Sonic is - Oh My God - a "juvenile delinquent"

So - uh - in Paramount's 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog film, starring James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, Marsden will be a cop, and ... Sonic ... will be a juvenile delinquent who teams up with him, says Jim (incorrectly named James at the Forbes source) Gianopulous.

A second interview with one Neil Moritz at The Wrap says this;

What we’re trying to do with Sonic is make a movie about a small-town police officer and Sonic at a time when they are both desperately in need of a friend, and we hope that this theme is friendship is what gives the film its heart and makes it prosper.

Not only does this sound boring as shit, it doesn't sound a thing like any Sonic the Hedgehog game known to man.  Are we sure he's still a hedgehog at all?

Sonic the Delinquent-Hedghog hits theaters November 15th, 2019.

And it's getting harder to enjoy the day.

Vogue Interviews Armie Hammer and Young Jean Lee About 'Straight White Men'

Straight White Men, a play written by Young Jean Lee, is debuting on Broadway this month on the Second Stage at Helen Hayes Theater in NYC. Lee directed an incarnation of the play at The Public Theater in NYC in 2014, and again a few years later at Steppenwolf in Chicago.

Lee will be the first ever Asian-American woman playwright to have her work on Broadway. For its Broadway debut, Anna D. Shapiro will direct the show, which stars ONTD fave Armie Hammer, as well as Tom Skeritt, Josh Charles, and Paul Schneider. The play centers on a widower and his three adult sons, who are home for the holidays.

Hammer, on why he's doing theater now after training as a theatrical actor but working exclusively in film:

"The easy answer is that it scared me. I’ve come to realize that the point of life is not to be comfortable—you should be in some sort of discomfort and pain at any given moment because that’s the only way to grow, as an actor and as a person. Plus, the play is so brilliant and prescient and timely—it deals so well with the concepts of toxic masculinity and white privilege, which we’re finally reckoning with as a society. And I thought, Not only will I get to push myself and do a play on Broadway but I’ll also get to be part of something that really has something to say."

Lee, on writing a typical three act play after a lot of experimentation with structure and form earlier in her career:

"To me, the naturalistic three-act play feels like the straight white male of theatrical forms. I noticed that straight white maleness, which used to be the default, seemed to have become a label. And I noticed straight white men adapting to suddenly having to take on this label, the way marginalized people have had labels applied to them forever. And then I realized that I could make an identity-politics show about that—it seemed like a really difficult challenge.”

It's ridiculous that Lee is the first Asian-American woman playwright on Broadway. Do you do things that scare you, ONTD?
