ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

Hereditary doesn't have the fashion, bling, or Rihanna of Ocean’s 8, but it does have a scary dead grandma, better reviews, and Toni Collette. And both are opening wide this weekend! This is not to shade Ocean’s 8, since I personally plan on seeing that, too, but it’s always fun when an indie studio opens a movie in wide release. Info and trailers for Hereditary and the rest of this week’s releases can be found below - after a few weeks of mostly duds, it’s a good week for independent film and Ann Dowd.

Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: June 1, May 25, and May 18.

YES Y'ALL THAT IS A SKIRT
Interview highlights:

  • “We were very much unsupervised with a bunch of equipment…” -EM about the new record, 'Deus Sex Machina: Or, Moving Slowly Beyond Nikola Tesla'

  • Highlights that each member is a multi-instrumentalist

  • Lilah and Ezra have known another since middle school

  • Ezra was in a production of Into The Woods

  • "One reason for this: as a new era of intolerance dawned with Trump’s election, so did a new era of resistance. The band knew they had to fight fire with fire. Larson cites the election as a critical point for the group and an inspiration moving forward: “It’s going to become quite a grind, to drag our country back, but as a band it’s something that we’re committed to—organizing people."

  • “Our music definitely draws from the place where what is musical and what is political is one in the same. In political theory and mystical thought, the same thing that comes up again and again is that everything is interconnected. That’s quantum theory.” - EM

ONTD Original: Speculative Fiction Books of June 2018

This month, fans of speculative fiction (an umreblla term for narrative fiction with supernatural or futuristic elements, which includes science fiction, horror, fantasy, dyopstian, etc, or a blend of those genres) have quite a bit to look forward to. I've chosen nine books to highlight in the post. I excluded books in series or trilogies (for example, science fiction writer Yoon Ha Lee's Revenant Gun, the final book in his Machineries of Empire trilogy, is out this month) and I also didn't include books from my previous book posts, such as the dystopian novel The Book of M by Peng Shepherd.

Free Chocolate
Amber Royer

Forces array against her including her alien boyfriend and a reptilian cop. But when she escapes onto an unmarked starship things go from bad to worse: it belongs to the race famed throughout the galaxy for eating stowaways! Surrounded by dangerous yet hunky aliens, Bo starts to uncover clues that the threat to Earth may be bigger than she first thought.

A People’s History of the Vampire Uprising
Raymond Villareal
Publication Date: June 5
The body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, walks out of the town morgue. To the young CDC investigator called in to consult the local police, it's a bizarre medical mystery.

More bodies, dead of a mysterious disease that solidifies their blood, are brought to the morgue, and disappear. In a futile game of catch-up, the CDC, the FBI, and the US government must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world.

Impossibly strong, smart, poised, beautiful, and commanding, these vampires reject the term as derogatory, preferring the euphemistic "gloamings." They quickly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society: sports, entertainment, and business. Soon people are begging to be 're-created,' willing to accept the risk of death if their bodies can't handle the transformation. The stakes change yet again when a charismatic and wealthy businessman, recently turned, decides to do what none of his kind has done before: run for political office.

We Are Where the Nightmares Go and Other Stories
C. Robert Cargill
Publication Date: June 12

The very rejection of joy is his own kind of "pursuit of happiness." As his mother, Pearl wants nothing more than to help Rhett--but is it for his sake or for hers?
