If you’re like me, you don’t want to outside
at all during the Summer months. So here are some movies you can enjoy while you’re indoors hiding from the sun with the AC cranked up & plenty of the ice-cold beverage of your choice.
Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)
One of the
beach party films that came out between 1963 & 1968 which featured music geared towards teens, teen freedom (parents were nowhere to be found), fun & sexuality (hinted at, but never shown) and Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello. This particular one would be Avalon’s last of these type of films.
These movies would later be parodied in the 1987 film Back to the Beach, which was Funicello’s last major movie role.
The Endless Summer (1966)
This documentary follows two California Mike Hynson & Robert August as the travel around the world, looking for the perfect wave & introducing the locals of the coast of Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Hawaii, Ghana, Nigeria & South Africa to the sport of surfing.
The film is credited with introducing the sport of sufing, which had started to become popular outside of Hawaii & the Polynesian islands in places like California & Australia, to more of the world.
National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
Clark Griswald (Chevy Chase) wanting to spend more time with his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angleo) and children Rusty & Audrey, decides to lead the family across the country from the Chicago suburbs to the southern California amusement park Walley World. His wife wants to fly, but Clark insists on driving, so he can bond with his family. As they say, hilarity ensues.
Notable for Christie Brinkley's bit part as the Girl in Red Ferrari.
Followed by the sequels European Vacation (1985), Christmas Vacation (1989) & Vegas Vacation (1997)
Dirty Dancing (1986)
Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) goes on vacation with her family to the Catskill Mountains, there she meets, and falls for, dancer Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze).
The film had a good soundtrack, featuring the iconic song (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.
Followed by the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which was actually a prequel, a stage version & a lack-luster made-for-TV remake.
Summer School (1987)
When the regular Summer School teacher for remedial English quits after winning the lottery on the last day of school before Summer Vacation, the Vice Principal forces Gym teacher Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon years before NCIS) to take over by threatening his chance for tenure. Also starring Kirstie Alley & Courtney Thorne-Smith.
