Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood Ate a Penis-Cake on His Birthday

Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood celebrated his 42nd birthday with a penis-shaped cake served on a gold-framed mirror — a tribute to Curb Your Enthusiasm, as the accompanying tweet confirmed. "In homage to Larry, Jeff & Funkhauser," he wrote. "An erotic birthday cake from Lucie and @huntingowls. Next, a curb marathon!" As Consequence of Sound points out, we were spared the speculation that this might have been some kind of twisted Miley Cyrus tribute.

The Master-scorer has stayed relatively clear of the spotlight while Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich have been spreading the Atoms for Peace gospel (which includes a large section on why Spotify is the devil's work). That said, the arrival of this odd piece of pastry dovetails nicely with SPIN's recent gallery of fifth graders drawing their interpretations of Radiohead's often olbique music.

Katy Perry's AMA Performance Goes Appropriation Chic with Japanese Theme

$

Well, you know, it really wouldn’t be an awards ceremony featuring American pop stars if none of them were blatantly appropriating some culture or other. This time around, that appropriation went to Katy Perry’s American Music Awards performance, in which she dressed in a kimono and danced around a Japan-themed set.

I had settled down onto my couch for the night, prepared for a relatively chill awards ceremony to cover — this ain’t the VMAs, after all. What could happen? Then the show starts, and five seconds in, Perry’s already reenacting The Mikado and all bets are off. What am I supposed to do with that, Katy Perry?

The performance itself was visually pretty: The sets and the lanterns were beautiful, as were the costumes — but that is also, well, not the point. Because Katy Perry is also just so incredibly… not Japanese. Which means a whole lot of things, most namely that you can expect at least 15 separate think-pieces to pop up tomorrow surrounding Katy Perry’s cultural appropriation and what it says about pop music/feminism/society at the moment/throughout history/going forward.

As of my writing this, Miley Cyrus has not even been onstage yet and this show is already riddled with issues. Let’s see if we can keep a tally on the number of problematic things that go down during this ceremony. Unfortunately, I’m guessing no fewer than 15.

Ezra Koenig Weighs In On “Selfies”

$

Oxford Dictionaries releases its new word of the year around this time (last year it was verb usage of “gif”) and the “word of 2013″ has been announced. Selfie (a term still new enough that I battle with auto-corrected every time I type it) is now officially defined by Oxford Dictionary as: “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” While linguistics scholars may lament, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig (who, along with Sufjan Stevens, is one of the most linguistically informed indie rock stars) is celebrating. As he told Rolling Stone in a recent interview he’s a big fan of people posting selfies, and explains his feelings in a surprisingly earnest way:

I’m definitely pro-selfie, I think that anybody who’s anti-selfie is really just a hater. Because, truthfully, why shouldn’t people take pictures of themselves? When I’m on Instagram and I see that somebody took a picture of themselves, I’m like, ’Thank you.’ I don’t need to see a picture of the sky, the trees, plants. There’s only one you.

There’s all this bullshit about ’the younger kids today are more self-absorbed.’ It’s like, give me a fucking break! I’ve been in nursing homes, where my grandma is. I’ve seen some of the most selfish people on the planet in there. And the world that these kids are born into literally could not get more selfish. The world is so fucked-up and unequal and full of assholes. You can’t blame it on the younger generation.

Koenig’s not just fronting either, check out his countless selfies here, and above see him pulling off the extremely difficult “Holy Trinity” selfie, which is definitely not recommended for novices.

Tom Cruise 'on cloud nine' after date with fellow Scientologist Laura Prepon

Tom Cruise was on "cloud nine" after a date with actress Laura Prepon, whom he has been friends with through Scientology.

The pair have known each other for some time, and it seems the friendship has now blossomed into romance. Tom is believed to have pulled out all the stops when he took Laura for dinner at The Manor Hotel in Los Angeles, a favourite among fellow Scientology followers.

"It may seem like an odd choice but it's a top restaurant called The Renaissance serving French/Californian cuisine," a source told British magazine Grazia.

"He had her picked up in a vintage car, knowing it was one of her favourite, and had pre-ordered a vintage bottle of 1979 merlot, which was on the table when she arrived. They spent three hours laughing and joking. It's clear Tom is smitten and after the date he was on cloud nine. They had their second date at the restaurant too, meeting for Sunday brunch, and then she accompanied him a few days later to a dinner party at John's [Travolta] home."

Tom is now believed to be secretly dating the Orange Is the New Black star and they have been spending a lot of time together. According to insiders, he is believed to be eager to settle down and get married.

"[Tom is] the happiest he has been since his divorce from Katie [Holmes]," a source added.

"Tom has known Laura for a few years now and they are all in the same social group that includes John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston. He's always been fascinated by her and, since seeing her in Orange Is the New Black, that has turned into an attraction. So he bit the bullet and asked her out."

Tom's ex-wife Katie Holmes is also showing signs of moving on. She is having a great time shooting a new movie in South Africa and is happy to remain on good terms with Tom for the sake of their daughter Suri.

"Katie's come through so much and survived, she's past hiding away. She has Suri, she has her career and she has some amazing friends. She's strong enough to handle this," a source added.

MSNBC Cancels Alec Baldwin Talker 'Up Late'

MSNBC's Alec Baldwin experiment proved to be quite short-lived. The network has pulled the plug on the actor's Up Late in the wake of a paparazzo catching footage of the actor shouting an unconfirmed homophobic slur earlier in November.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the planned Nov. 29 episode, what was to be its first back from a two-week suspension, will not air -- and the series has been pulled from the schedule entirely, as first reported by the New York Post. Baldwin had alluded as much in a recent editorial, expressing his doubt that the series would come back from its scandal-prompted hiatus.

For MSNBC, closing up shop on Up Late is not the worst news. Though a program of its nature was not expected to come out of the gate particularly strong, the show arguably didn't even live up to its tempered expectations. Five weeks in, the 10 p.m. Friday talker was down 40 percent from the premiere. Its last episode averaged just 395,000 viewers and 101,000 adults 25-54.

"We've never had a pure interview show," MSNBC president Phil Griffin told THR ahead of the launch. "It almost doesn't matter who the guest is if you can bring out something that is unique and revealing. … He's a big personality. I have confidence that he'll be known for his interviews."

MSNBC, under the NBCUniversal umbrella, is not the only Comcast-owned property where Baldwin has ties. In addition to the one-year contract he signed with the cable network at the start of his series, Baldwin signed a two-year overall deal with Universal Television in December 2012 to develop and produce projects at the studio. Baldwin's been an NBCUniversal employee dating back to 2006 when he started on 30 Rock.

Aside from his editorial that ran in The Huffington Post, Baldwin's only other comments in the wake of his Nov. 14 run-in came with the suspension of Up Late.

"I did not intend to hurt or offend anyone with my choice of words, but clearly I have -- and for that I am deeply sorry," Baldwin said in a statement at the time. "Words are important. I understand that and will choose mine with great care going forward."

'Breaking Bad's' Vince Gilligan on Jesse Pinkman's fate and rooting for Walter White

Vince Gilligan, creator of "Breaking Bad," sat down with GQ for its annual Men of the Year issue and revealed all sorts of goodies about the end of AMC's Emmy-winning drama series. The full interview is here, it's a great read.

On what happened to Jesse Pinkman:

"My personal feeling is that he got away. But the most likely thing, as negative as this sounds, is that they're going to find this kid's fingerprints all over this lab and they're going to find him within a day or a week or a month. And he's still going to be on the hook for the murder of two federal agents. But yeah, even though that's the most likely outcome, the way I see it is that he got away and got to Alaska, changed his name, and had a new life. You want that for the kid. He deserves it."

On people rooting for Walter White:

"I've kind of bemusedly scratched my head a bit, over the seasons, at the idea of people still rooting for Walt. But I don't think they're wrong. I just think it's sociologically interesting.
Oddly enough, I think I started to root for Walt a little more in the final couple of episodes. I would argue he did the most nasty, sadistic thing he had ever done in our third-from-final episode, where he says to Jesse, "I watched Jane die." But in that same episode, he also did a couple of the kindest and most selfless things he had ever done. That episode really encompassed the duality of this character. He could be good, and he could be bad."

On bringing back Gretchen and Elliot, which was all because of a teenage cancer patient:

"I thought for the last couple of seasons that we were probably done with them. Not because I didn't want them back in the story, but I just couldn't figure out how they would be germane to the proceedings.

But then I met this young fan named Kevin Cordasco. He was this very sweet young guy, 16 years old, and he had had cancer since he was 9. This poor kid; half his life he'd had cancer. And he had two wishes. One of them was that he wanted to go see the Yankees play, and the other was that he wanted to meet some of the actors from his favorite TV show. So I got to meet him, and he was a wonderful guy. This was back in October of 2012, and he looked like he was probably not long for this world. I remember asking him, 'Do you want me to tell you how it ends? As long as you keep it secret?'

And he said, 'No, I want to watch it.' So I said, 'What would you want to see?' -- certainly not promising anything but just making conversation. He thought about it for a minute and he said, 'I'm wondering about Gretchen and Elliott. I'd like to know more about them. Do you think we'll ever see them again?' It got me thinking. And I went back to the writers' room and told them about it, and it got them thinking, too. So Gretchen and Elliott came back in very large part because of Kevin.

The crime, the sadness of it, is that he never lived to see the ending. He passed away in March."

Kanye West Flips Out On “Sway In The Morning”

Kanye West and Sway Calloway exchanged verbal jabs this morning on Sway In The Morning. When asked about why he couldn’t produce his fashion line on a smaller level, Kanye began yelling at Sway:

“How Sway? You ain’t got the answers Sway. I’ve been doing this more than you. You ain’t got the answers. You ain’t been doing the education. You don’t have the answers though. You tryna give me advice, but you ain’t spend $13 million of your own money to try to empower yourself!”

Kanye eventually articulated his frustration with Sway’s question regarding why Kanye doesn’t empower himself instead of tearing down companies:

"This industry of what I’m trying ot get into. Ain’t nobody never broke down. Ain’t nobody broke down. We all slaves, I ain’t trying to disrespect you on your show. [...] Y’all ain’t experience nothing but a moment out of the movie out of Glory. Back in the days, the slaves had enough money they could buy their own freedom. We slaves to Nike. We slaves to Benz. We slaves to public perception."

MIley Cyrus Erects $25K Teepee In The Backyard Of Her Studio City Home

Miley has a new home -- sort of! The hard-partying Miley Cyrus has some new digs of sorts. In celebration of her 21st year on this planet, Miley has erected a giant teepee in the backyard of her Studio City home. In our exclusive pics, Miley's new abode is shown situated next to her luxurious pool, outdoor seating area and fake white horse. Yep, that's what we said -- fake white horse.

The luxe teepee, which sleeps up to four people, reportedly costs $25,000. Wowsers - that's one pricey teepee.

Miley's teepee is a cone-shaped structure with distinctly Native American-inspired triangle pattern on the bottom of it, and red striped pattern through the center. The temporary structure's opening faces Miley's rectangle pool -- we think the whole thing is pretty home actually.

Perhaps the "Wrecking Ball" feels safer within the confines of her canvas cave after burglars broke into her home on Friday and stole over $100K in jewelry and high-end bags.

Maybe friends crashed there after Miley's epic 21st birthday bash at Beacher's Madhouse at the Roosevelt Hotel, following the American Music Awards on Sunday night. The party raged on through out the night and had a mini Miley, plenty of dancing plush pandas, a legion of twerking ladies and Miley-inspired cocktails. Sounds like our kind of party.

Attendees at the star-studded bash included Kelly Osbourne, rapper Wiz Khalifa, his wife Amber Rose and Miley's dad Billy Ray Cyrus.

After the raucous soiree, Miley tweeted, "Best birthday night ever. im depressed my birthday is over."

We have a feeling Miley won't have a hard time find another reason to party in the very near future. Maybe a new Subway restaurant (or a paper bag) will be opened this week -- and she can celebrate that.

Miley Cyrus Birthday Roundup

She may have revamped her image as a total sex kitten, but deep down Miley Cyrus is still a daddy's girl … and Billy Ray didn't let her forget it on her 21st birthday Saturday.

Her doting pop went all out on her gift, buying the singer a $24,000 customized Cam-Am Spyder motorcycle, complete with her initials plastered all over it.

The three-wheeled motorcycle has lately become a trendy toy among the rich and famous – The Game, Ryan Reynolds and Jada Pinkett Smith have all been seen tooling around town on them – and even Billy Ray was photographed taking the gift for a spin around his Toluca Lake neighborhood with younger daughter Noah on the back on Friday.

Cyrus also posted a few Twitter pics of a pretty floral arrangement sent by friends, and Kelly Osbourne Tweeted a shot of them celebrating with a cupcake and birthday hats backstage at Sunday's AMAs.

But the real party began when her crew – Osbourne, Emma Roberts, Liam Payne and Niall Horan of One Direction, Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose, Cherie Daly, Tyler the Creator and the ATL Twins to name a few – hit Hollywood hotspot Beacher's Madhouse.

With performances from a professional twerk team led by Beacher's resident twerker Amazon Ashley, and Mini-Miley and Mini-Robin Thicke recreating their infamous VMA performance to mini-teddy bears and Dr. Seuss's The Lorax, guests were not disappointed. They were also treated to a cake depicting the singer in a bikini made of pot leaves.

“Midnight Memories” Album Sales Pacing for 550K+

$
0
0

It is very early in the game, but as of press time, it appears One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” will open to a stronger sales total than predecessor “Take Me Home.”

According to Hits, the latest from the world’s most popular boy band is tracking for a debut tally in the 550-600,000 range. “Take Me Home” moved 540,000 in its inaugural US frame last November.

While the growth is not as impressive as some expected given the group’s escalating profile, it is certainly welcome in a climate that allowed recent Lady Gaga and Katy Perry albums to open with sales of less than 300,000 copies each.

Worth noting is the high margin of error for forecasts at this point. Deriving album sales projections is never an exact science, and it becomes even more difficult in a complicated week like this one. In addition to welcoming most new releases on Monday (as opposed to the traditional Tuesday), this week also houses the Black Friday shopping rush.

Accounting for the impact of Black Friday on album sales is no cake walk.

What can be said with certainty, however, is that One Direction will debut atop next week’s Billboard 200 album sales chart.
