Madonna's hail-Mary performance at the Met Gala was heavenly, consisting of “Like a Prayer,” a bit of a new song called “Beautiful Game” and a cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah.”

It can be easy to forget — and she sometimes helps her detractors forget — that Madonna is not only about razzle-dazzle and curves. As this performance demonstrated, she has unsurpassed artistry, can sing beautifully, and has sincere musicality.

The video starts out with "Yo, whassup, Zachery Ty Bryan here, you might remember me from Home Improvement" followed by a list of all of Trump's accomplishments ("de-nucularizing the Korean peninsula", etc.) and his annoyance that "yet the mainstream media just wants to talk about Stormy Daniels - Bill Clinton did it! LBJ did it! JFK did it! Let's look at what's happening in the world."

He then says he is donating $25,000 to producer Adi Shankar's contest to write non-stereotypical storylines for The Simpsons Apu character, because "minorities, I'm all for you guys...I'm all about my Indian people...Kanye, keep it up!...Let's just get along, everybody! Let's support our president."

Weinstein almost replaced Jackson with Tarantino as 'Lord of the Rings' director

British film writer Ian Nathan (obnoxious LinkedIn bio here) recently published his newest book "Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson & The Making of Middle-Earth," in which he details a conflict between producer Harvey Weinstein and director Peter Jackson that nearly resulted in an entirely different Lord of the Rings.

According to Nathan, Weinstein thought Jackson wasted $12m in developing a two-movie script and threatened to replace him with Quentin Tarantino or John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) if he didn't turn it into a single two-hour film.

See a speculative fancast of a Tarantino LotR

Jack Lechner (development head of Miramax) sent an outline of what he called "a more radical, streamlined approach," including the following changes:

  • Cutting Helm’s Deep
  • Eowyn as Boromir’s sister
  • No Faramir
  • No Balrog
  • No Saruman

Turning down the proposition (knowing it "was literally guaranteed to disappoint every single person that has read that book"), Jackson told Miramax: “We’d rather have our lives and do our films and not deal with all this crap anymore. Tell Harvey to go ahead and make his film and good luck.”

Weinstein was eventually persuaded to let Jackson and partner Fran Walsh sell elsewhere. New Line Cinema picked it up and made the trilogy Jackson envisioned; he won a best director Oscar for The Return of the King and the series won 17 Oscars in total.

Neve Campbell speaks on the #MeToo movement

Neve Campbell, whose career spans almost 30 years, has worked with at least three of the men who've been outed as sexual predators: Harvey Weinstein, James Toback and Kevin Spacey. She spoke to Fashion Magazine about the #MeToo movement.

It's a very strange experience,” she says. “It’s just sad that there are people in this world who use their power to dominate others and take advantage and harm. Within all of this, that is the horrible thing. I think what I’ve been struggling with is that there hasn’t been much due process for certain people. At the same time, I’m glad that things are shifting. I’m certainly overjoyed that people are finding their voice and speaking up, and I think anyone who has been damaged shouldn’t hesitate to try to find justice. I’m really glad that that movement is happening. I think we need to be cautious about judging people until we’re absolutely certain. It’s a tough balance. I think it’s OK for the pendulum to swing right now. Maybe people need to be extra-cautious to figure out what’s appropriate and learn how to read signs and just be smart about it.”

•  Neve found success as Sidney Prescott in the Scream series beginning in 1996, all produced by the Weinstein brothers, Harvey and Bob. She also starred in 54, a film among the many reportedly "ruined by Weinstein." The film was changed so much that Campbell did not agree with it and didn't promote it until 2015 when the Director's Cut version was released.

•  In 2004, she joined James Toback in When Will I Be Loved. The movie depicts Campbell's character masturbating and other sexual situations. During the same year Campbell said to IGN of the sex scenes, "I had ownership of it, because Jim wouldn't have forced me to do anything. We had had discussions beforehand about my comfort level on things, and I obviously was very comfortable with things. But I wouldn't have put myself in a situation where I could be forced into anything, and I didn't feel like I was compromising."

•  In 2015, she joined Kevin Spacey in House of Cards for Season 4 and 5.

Camille Cosby calls for criminal investigation of Bill Cosby's prosecutor

    0
    0

Camille Cosby, Bill Cosby's wife of 54 years, recently released a statement calling for a criminal investigation of the Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, who prosecuted her husband's sexual assault case. Steele campaigned for the office with the promise that he would do so.

Camille wrote: “I am publicly asking for a criminal investigation of that district attorney and his cohorts. This is a homogeneous group of exploitative and corrupt people, whose primary purpose is to advance themselves professionally and economically at the expense of Mr. Cosby’s life. If they can do this to Mr. Cosby, they can do so to anyone.”

She went on: “In the case of Bill Cosby, unproven accusations evolved into lynch mobs, who publicly and privately coerced cancellations of Bill Cosby’s scheduled performances; syndications of ‘The Cosby Show’; rescissions of honorary degrees and a vindictive attempt to close an exhibition of our collection of African American art in the Smithsonian Museum of African Art."

She also blamed the media for "frenzied, relentless demonization of [Cosby] and unquestioning acceptance of accusers’ allegations" and followed in the footsteps of a Cosby spokesperson who last week compared his treatment during the trial to the lynching of Emmett Till (Cosby was placed under house arrest and ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor).
