Actress-singer Nive Nielsen talks AMC’s ‘The Terror’ and representing Inuit heritage on TV

0
0

  • Nive Nielsen is a Greenlandic actress-singer; her band is a folk-pop group called Nive and the Deer Children.

  • The Terror is her second acting role; more then ten years ago she was in Terrence Malick’s The New World.

  • On The Terror she plays Lady Silence, an Inuit woman whose father is accidentally shot by the British men on the Franklin expedition.

  • She discusses her character going on the ship for the first time ("She hasn’t heard of anybody before, she doesn’t know what the Europeans can do yet. I imagined she’s a little bit innocent in the sense that she’s trusting, and she’s not as scared as she should’ve been.")

  • She says the writers of the show did a lot of research and were respectful of the culture and that it was a "collaborative" experience to work on the character.

  • On the creature called the tuunbaq in The Terror: "We would say 'tuurngaq' here in Greenland, but it’s like a shaman’s helping spirit. It’s a creation of the shaman. It can literally be formed and shaped according to the shaman’s imagination."

  • She's fluent in Kalaallisut, the Greenlandic dialect of Inuktitut.

  • She also talks about her work in Greenland National TV and a whale hunting program she worked on.

  • At the conclusion of the interview, Nive says she would like to pursue more acting while continuing to make music with her band.

The Relentless Torture of The Handmaid’s Tale

  • While season one felt like Important Television, season two and its amplified violence has felt like torture porn.

  • Laura Hudson at the Verge noted"It seems like the show is just choosing random, horrible things to happen to women for shock effect."

  • Anti-porn feminists created an eight-point definition of pornography and the writer notes THT fits at least half, including "women are presented in scenarios of degradation, humiliation, injury, torture, shown as filth or inferior, bleeding, bruised or hurt in a context that makes these conditions sexual."

  • There's worry that the use of sex and violence is exploitive and there are ways to convey the acts without focusing on making such brutality as explicit as possible.

  • Hulu's team is 70% male, and the first two episodes of season two, as well as the sixth (the last on the screener), are written by men.

  • The show falls under a tale as old as time: the bravery of a heroine is intensified by her victimhood, especially if she's a mother.

ONTD Original: When Pop Girls Go Hood

0

The Internet was abuzz Thursday after Christina Aguilera ended her long musical hiatus with the release of "Accelerate," a Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz-assisted track offering a taste of what's in store when her sixth album 'Liberation' drops next month. Influenced by the trap sounds that dominate contemporary hip hop radio and produced by K*ny* W*st, it's hardly Aguilera's first "urban" record - she famously collaborated with Lil' Kim for 2002's "Can't Hold Us Down," and 2010's ill-fated 'Bionic' saw her joining forces with Nicki Minaj, M.I.A. and Lil Jon - and 'Liberation' is posed to continue a long-standing tradition of female pop stars courting the hip hop and R&B markets with which they have merely flirted previously.

Below, a survey of (seven of) the girls trying

Ariana Grande - "Hands on Me" feat. A$AP Ferg

Ari was feeling the Xtina fantasy on this Darkchild co-production, which appeared at the tail end of 2014's 'My Everything.' Critics compared it to then-recent hits by Rihanna and Iggy Azalea, with dirrty lyrics that stood in stark contrast to the candy sweetness of Grande's cat ear-adorned image at the time. A$AP Mob's Ferg politely asks permission to put his "candle" on her "cake," to which the Ponytail of Pop reassuringly responds, "I can take it, hold nothing back, give it to me."

Natalia Kills - "Feel Myself"

Before deciding to self-immolate on New Zealand's version of 'The X-Factor' in 2015, the artist formerly known as Natalia Kills (formerly known as Verse, formerly known as...) released two underrated pop records that ought to have seen her ascending to greater heights in the pop girl hierarchy. The second, 2013's 'Trouble,' was a deeply personal and at times heavy reflection on the artist's childhood and teenage years. Termed a "dark pop" album, it encompassed elements of garage rock and sampled Hall & Oates - it also, almost, saw Kills trying on the role of MC. "Feel Myself," an album b-side that never saw official release, finds her spitting her man candy wishlist over a throbbing beat. "I want a guy I can climb like Everest... he don't gotta be the cleverest, hips and lips and unintelligent!"

Madonna - "Candy Shop"

From the outset of her storied career, "black" sounds have been woven into the DNA of the mononymous Queen of Pop's records - it was not until her face appeared on the cover for her second single, 1983's "Burning Up," that listeners learned that the Bay City native was not African American. The decades that followed saw her experimenting with everything from Motown sounds ("Shoo-Bee-Doo," 1984) to new jack swing ("Bye Bye Baby," 1992) to R&B ('Bedtime Stories,' 1994), culminating in arguably her most hip hop-tinged record to date with 2008's 'Hard Candy.' Sharing executive producer cred with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, Madonna became M-Dolla for a markedly trendy affair on which she promised to "kick [the listener's] ass, but [...] make [them] feel good."Album opener "Candy Shop" found the then-49 year old urging us to enter her store: "My sugar is raw, sticky and sweet."

Britney Spears - "Outrageous"

It was in the midst of filming the accompanying video for this, the fourth and final single from 2003's 'In the Zone,' that Spears' knee arguably changed the course of her career forever. But it's also notable as one of the most "urban" songs she's ever recorded. Written and produced by R. Kelly, "Outrageous" was originally slated to be 'In the Zone''s maiden single and features rap-adjacent chants that drip with sex. Over what MTV called a "snake charmer melody," Spears takes shots at the media and her critics, (in hindsight ominously) proclaiming, "B-Girl ain't lost the beat, jumped over drama and I landed on my feet."

Robyn - "None of Dem" (feat. Röyksopp)

For many, Robyn's 2010 suite of 'Body Talk' mini-albums are a pop music benchmark, a glittering crown of genre-bending jewels that remains sparkling nearly a decade on. While at its core a dance record, 'Body Talk' is peppered with influences from across the musical spectrum - dancehall ("Dancehall Queen"), disco ("Love Kills") and hip hop, on the Röyksopp-produced and lyrically biting "None of Dem.""None of dem get my sex, none of dem move my intellect," Robyn scoffs on the latter, her delivery "somewhere between Missy Elliott, Fever Ray, and the planet Neptune".

Cheryl Cole - "Ghetto Baby"

Though never officially released as a single, this Kid Gloves-produced track from 2012's 'A Million Lights' garnered considerable press attention for its Rankin-directed music video and its Lana Del Rey-reject status. Originally written by Del Rey for her galvanizing major label debut 'Born to Die' (also 2012), Cole's infatuation with the elusive chanteuse behind "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans" led to Del Rey handing the track over to her to rerecord. "When he's bad, he's bad, but when he's good no one's better," Cole swoons in a decidedly Lana-esque tone - for comparison, see her leaked demo.

Miley Cyrus - "SMS (Bangerz)" featuring Britney Spears

Perhaps the most egregious instance of a white female pop star hopping on the hip hop gravy train. Cyrus proclaimed 'Bangerz' (2013) to be her proper debut album, distancing herself from the pop records she had previously released. Enlisting the services of everyone from Mike WiLL Made-It (Rihanna's "Pour It Up") to Pharrell Williams, she worked to achieve a "dirty south" amalgamation of rap and country that would "set a new standard for pop music."The resulting product, and Cyrus' promotional tactics, would prove divisive among critics and fans, with songs about eschewing men in favor of marijuana and vibrators perhaps too effectively laying her Disney kid image to rest.

NBA warns Drake for 'use of bad language' after exchange with Cavs' Kendrick Perkins during Game 1, sources told @wojespn. https://t.co/by38BrcFq9pic.twitter.com/sjqYK6DboY

— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) May 3, 2018

Aubrey is taking major L's this week, first he was blasted by Robyn Fenty and now the NBA has issued a warning to the Toronto Raptors to make the Light Skin Keith Sweat to shut the fuck up or else he'll be banned from the rest of the playoffs. Aubrey thought he was hard and about that life by calling 31-year-old Cavs star Kendrick Perkins a ‘fucking pussy’ while he was walking to the locker room. Perkins heard and a heated crossfire of words ensued. "I'm here to represent the Cleveland Cavaliers," Perkins said. "At the end of the day, it isn't about Perk versus Drake; that doesn't even sound right. It's the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the Toronto Raptors. Besides, what could he possibly do to me? I mean, really. If he leaves me alone, I'll leave him alone, and that's all there is."

Martin Freeman: My 'Sherlock' Comments Were Taken Out of Context

0
0

Martin Freeman has clarified comments he made last month in which he said that filming the BBC's Sherlock was no longer fun because fans were trying to dictate the direction of the show, after his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch publicly called his comments "pathetic".

In an interview with the Daily Beast, Freeman said “My point with Sherlock was that [fan] expectations can be heavy. There’s a certain aspect that some fans are going to run with the ball and make their own thing out of your show – which is completely fair enough, as long as we all acknowledge that that is what is happening.

“I think when you get into a slightly tail-wagging-the-dog scenario, that gets boring, for me. So when people insist that Sherlock is supposed to be this show, when we decide what show it is, it’s like, ‘No, this is actually the show we’re making, and that we’ve always made. I know you want to see this happen, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to have to happen.’ So that’s what gets, frankly, wearing.”

Freeman says that he is “well aware of [Sherlock’s] importance in my life, both professionally and personally”.

“I love the show. I’m a fan of the show. Unfortunately, that’s the joy of being quoted out of context, and joy of newspapers needing a headline.”

ONTD Original: Kdrama Reccomendations Based Off of US Shows

This is a kdrama post! I figured since I watch a lot of kdrama (I know, I’m a wackadoo) I’d recommend ppl some based off of English language shows. I will say this: I haven’t seen most of this kdramas or tv series listed but am instead going by the plots and themes of the shows, along with the reception and popularity. I think the world needs better ‘intro to kdrama’ shows besides Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs. Synopsis are from AsianWiki and Wikipedia so if they sound corny then that’s their fault.
