Semifinals started in Eurovision back in 2004. Some changes were made in these years, like the reintroduction of jury voting, the presence of two semifinals instead of one, jury and televoting points being awarded independently... however one thing did not change: you have to be in the first 10 positions of your semi to qualify to the finals.
I chose some entries below which failed to do so, based on my taste only. I'll show their final position and how they were ranked in the juries (if existing) and in the televote.
1. Silvia Night - Congratulations (2006) Country: Iceland
Language: English
Placing: 13/23 (62 points)
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 76 (Macedonia)
I started the list with the satirical bop of eurovision kween Silvia Night, a satirical character portrayed by Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir to show every bad human behaviour people had. Too bad Europe didn't understand the intelligence of this beautiful angel and didn't vote for her :( tip: her backstage videos are as amazing y'all should watch it.
2. Deep Zone and Balthazar - DJ, Take Me Away (2008) Country: Bulgaria
Language: English
Placing: 11/19 (54 points), semi 2
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 67 (Albania)
NOTE: this year was an exception, in which only the first nine countries were selected by televote while the last one was decided by the jury (in this semi it was Sweden's Charlotte Perrelli, who finished 12th).
This bop unfortunately was a victim of the dark times of Bulgaria at ESC, when, from 2005 to 2013, they had only qualified once (with a bop in 2007).
3. Kristina - Horehronie (2010) Country: Slovakia
Language: Slovak
Placing: 16/17 (24 points - 14th televoting with 34 points, 16th jury with 25 points), semi 1
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 52 (Moldova - with epic sax guy!!!!!)
I don't have anything to say. Just that people are evil.
4. Stella Mwangi - Haba Haba (2011) Country: Norway
Language: English (with verses in Swahili)
Placing: 17/19 (30 points - 9th televoting with 56 points, 17th jury with 29 points), semi 1
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 55 (Switzerland)
ESC 2011 is, by far, the worst eurovision of this century. There were a lot of bops but almost ALL of them stayed in the semis. Result: boring unoriginal ballad after boring unoriginal ballad (there were few bops in the finals like Sweden's and Ireland's).
5. Sofi Marinova - Love Unlimited (2012) Country: Bulgaria
Language: Bulgarian (with verses in... a lot of languages)
Placing: 11/18 (45 points - 9th televoting with 59 points, 17th jury with 27 points), semi 2
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 45 (Norway)
NOTE: Norway received points from more countries, therefore they were the ones who advanced to the finals.
Reminder that the dark era of Bulgaria at ESC was evil, but the jury also was evil.
6. Who See - Igranka (2013) Country: Montenegro
Language: Montenegrin
Placing: 12/16 (41 points - 4th televoting, 14th jury), semi 1
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 52 (Estonia)
Imo, this was the biggest robbery in the history of the contest, because it was one of the most original bops and it was obviously boycotted by the jury (who also tried to boycott the greatest star Florin Cezar Ouatu with his masterpiece "It's My Life", but people were stronger and he won televoting <3 such a star).
7. Tanja - Amazing (2014) Country: Estonia
Language: English
Placing: 12/16 (36 points - 16th televoting with 13 points, 10th jury with 61 points), semi 1
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 40 (San Marino)
2014 was a great year and the one that I liked the most songs, so there are a lot of robbed icons imo. That year's "Euphoria" was one of them. And I particularly love the dance. Sad to see that this time, the jury is not to blame EUROPE WHY
8. Uzari and Maimuna - Time (2015) Country: Belarus
Language: English
Placing: 12/16 (39 points - 13th televoting with 32 points, 8th jury with 66 points), semi 1
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 62 (Albania)
Again: EUROPE WHY. Live is amazing and some songs who qualified aren't as close as this level of quality. I was shocked, for real.
9. Agnette - Icebreaker (2016) Country: Norway
Language: English
Placing: 13/18 (63 points - 34 from televoting, 29 from jury), semi 2
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 105 (Serbia)
I remember being shocked when it didn't qualify. Really. It was also one of my favorite years btw.
10. Jana Burčeska - Dance Alone (2017) Country: Macedonia
Language: English
Placing: 15/18 (69 points - 40 from televoting, 29 from the jury), semi 2
How many points did the last qualifier have?: 101 (Denmark)
Until today, I haven't watched this semi and I refuse to do it. This was, by far, my favorite last year and it is in my top 10 overall, I DON'T ACCEPT IT. The staging was not good, though. I'm sorry I don't have the video of it because @ geoblocking.
Reminder that rehearsals started today! Don't forget to support your favorite bops. ;)SOURCE:
