This subgenre in horror can make even the stone-cold horror fans recoil. Who doesn't get queasy when the main character is trying to escape loses his fingernail clean off or when someone gets their teeth taken out in a torture scene? In anticipation of
the new Suspiria -where
we were left bald by scene detail leaks- horror stans should watch one or two of these body horror movies.
Thanatomorphose (2012)Not talked about too often here, but i thought it was watchable and the gross out factor is present. It centers on a really unhappy woman in abusive relationship. After some rough sex, she gets bruises on her body that spread and starts to decay soon after. It's not too popular (DreadCentral even gave it a bad grade) but it did win some special fx awards.
Contracted (2013)After a girl has a one night stand with a guy (after he fucks a corpse), she starts getting symptoms. Brushing it off as an std, it all goes downhill from there: hair falling out, bleeding, eye changing color, etc. The nastiness goes up to max when she decides to still have sex with all that going on. I remember making
a post about the moviewhen it came out and it got some very mixed reviews because some felt it had a message that it punished women for having sex. You should go to the post just for the comment about someone's friend getting a cold sore and the doctor thought he got it from someone touching dead bodies.
Tusk (2014)Directed by Kevin Smith, it follows
Darry from Jeepers Creepers a podcast host interviewing a guy who offers a room for free, but has other creative plans for his guest. Michael Parks (R.i.P) does a good job at being creepy as hell. The reveal was overhyped (imo), but it deserves a spot here. Craigslist personals getting shut down may have saved some poor fuck from this.
The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009)Iconic! For all the wrong reasons probably. Who hasn't seen it or at least heard of it? The sequels get worse. The cancelled Sharon Needles used the centipede scene
in a performance with 3 actors, playing real legend Britney Spears', "3" in the background.
TRIVIA: A lot of actors walked out of auditions when finding out more about the movie and Roger Ebert declined to give the movie even 1 star.
The Fly (1986)Quintessential! This movie i can barely even handle and makes me want to throw up even thinking about it. A remake of the 1957 Vincent Price film, this one can stand on its own like the It remake. Makeup for Goldblum could take up to five hours and rumor has it, he was not an easy canvas. Complete with vomit and blood, this one can also
tug at your heartstrings (maybe).
Starry Eyes (2014)This one follows a girl hungry for fame. Working at a low-rent version of Hooters, "Big Taters", she decides to go hard and accept an offer by a starmaker on a "movie role". Predictably, the price is huge and she probably wants a motherfuckin refund. It does take an unexpected turn at the end instead of the usual within the subgenre.
Cabin Fever (2002)Starring
Shawn Rider Strong and a group of friends, they each start getting infected by a flesh-eating virus. A remake of this one came out in 2016. Just stick the original, as per usual.
TRIVIA: Rider Strong walked off set covered in blood and freaked out a bunch of schoolgirls. They became more freaked out when they realized it was Shawn from Boy Meets World, so they chased him through the woods.
Videodrome (1983)A sleazy CEO of a small cable station airs mostly sex and violence to keep its ratings. He's convinced his viewers want more, so he works with a guy that can intercept satellite signals globally and finds a feed of live torture, unbeknownst to him it's not fake. That is, after he becomes really obsessed and gets hallucinations. This movie touches on the
perversion and greed of mass media, with many consider it defining the body horror genre with something to say, and still feeling relevant to this day.
