The Peabody Awards recognize impactful storytelling in electronic media. Given by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, these awards spotlight stories that engage audiences as global citizens, expanding horizons, defending the public interest, or encouraging empathy.
Only 30 winners are selected from the 1200 annual submissions, and each winner had unanimous support from the Peabody Board of Jurors.
This year, 9 of the 30 winners are in the Entertainment category.
Hasan Minhaj delivers much more than a hilarious stand-up comedy special. “Homecoming King” is a deeply personal memoir—part Richard Pryor, part Spaulding Gray—that covers the struggles of the immigrant experience, encounters with stereotypes and raced expectations, and intergenerational acceptance while using comedy to invite empathy, caring, and understanding. (x)
Issa Rae delivers a groundbreaking series that captures the lives of everyday young black people in Los Angeles with a fresh and authentic take. Breaking away from tired and familiar representations of “diversity” on television, this series offers a fun and intimate portrayal of work, relationships, and the ordinary experiences of the two young black women at its center. (x)
A period drama and feminist comedy, Amy Sherman-Palladino’s story of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” centers on the emergence of a 1950s female comedian who runs afoul of New York decency laws. In the process, the colorful and imaginative story also reflects on the “place” of women in public spaces, Jewishness, familial relations, classed expectations, and the importance of a woman not being “ripped right out of a catalogue” that is both impressively weighty and effortlessly light. Masterful storytelling by civilian filmmakers at the heart of the Syrian crisis as they follow the volunteer group the White Helmets, who provide emergency services to traumatized residents in the rebel-occupied areas of the city of Aleppo. (x)

Karen Gillan is making her feature directorial debut with her film The Party's Just Beginning, which is screening at Tribeca Film Festival in the International Narrative Competition. In addition to directing, she also wrote the film, and stars alongside Lee Pace. But what is it about, you ask? Watch the clip above and read the summary below to get a taste.
Liusaidh is a sharp-witted, foul-mouthed, heavy-drinking twenty-something who is still reeling from a recent loss. Written by, directed by, and starring Karen Gillan, this surreal coming-of-age tale is a love letter to her hometown in the Scottish Highlands.
Karen's currently in NYC to promote her film, which screens starting 4/22, and presumably also to continue promoting the giant blockbusters she's done in her free time.
In recent weeks, she's been jetsetting for Avengers: Infinity War and Jumanji promo. Here she is in Singapore, wearing a gorgeously shiny dress by Paco Rabanne.
Scott and Aria Tyler Posey and Lucy Hale came together for horror flick, Truth or Dare, that predictably flopped with critics over the weekend. It stars a group of friends that have to play a game of truth or dare - guided by some kind of evil entity that also possesses them - or you die. In one scene, Lucy's character pulls a Regan and starts choking Posey when she's riding him.
"The face is awkward when you're actually doing it because you don't know how it's going to look in the final version of the film," Tyler told Seventeen.com. "That scene specifically where Lucy and I are having a sex scene and she's supposed to have that face and choke me — it's hard to not break and start laughing because doing this," he adds, making the smiley face. "It was odd."
Posey likes Lucy and was glad he finally got to work with her and says that since they both worked on long-running shows, she was not jaded at all. After each take, they'd laugh with each other. No word on if they are being kinky together after the movie wrapped.
Source Ontd, has anyone ever pulled anything weird on you during sex?
Speaking with Billboard, Normani explained why the collaboration is such a big deal. “I’ll be working with Missy Elliott soon, and the fact that she’s even willing to take a chance on me as a new artist means a lot, considering that she’s the one I’ve looked up to since I was a little girl,” she explained. “I literally remember dancing in my grandmother’s living room to all of Missy Elliott’s records. She’s such an innovator, and there’s no one else out there like her. The fact that she is willing to work with me…I’m like, ‘Who? Me?’”
Natalie Portman, who was born in Israel, will not be going to the country to accept the Genesis Prize Foundation award for her support for the Jewish community. Her rep said "recent events in Israel have been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel." The ceremony has been canceled.
-Weisz wanted a role where she played co-lead alongside another woman.
-read lesbian literature to try to find such a role because she figured that would be her best bet
-talks about the reaction to the sex scene in the film at TIFF and how important it was for her that it was done right
-“[The scene] where Esti comes — probably for the first time — that orgasm, to me, is her liberation,” Weisz says. “It’s her kind of freedom. It doesn’t just mean sex. It means so much about her agency and her self-determination.”
-"It can just get really boring watching heterosexual people, whether you’re gay or not," Weisz says. "It’s boring, particularly when the woman is the object of desire rather than the agent of desire. That’s what we’ve been spoon-fed — that the woman is the object of the male subjectivity, of his desire and passion. Oh, I’m bored of that. Really bored."
-says that her son has no racial or gender bias, that they are foreign concepts to him
-says that all of the queer women that she knows who have seen it have said that they can relate to the film; one told her that THE SCENE^tm was kind of like an insemination lol
I think the video is so beautiful, but I was surprised they kept the original version and just added Gente de Zona's lyrics. Kylie's Spanish is so cute! I wish that they had a Latin-influenced/reggaeton version of it to fit the video and the featured artists. Regardless, the video made me like the song even more!

On filming Suspiria: "no lie, fucked me up so much that I had to go to therapy”
Suspiria was filmed in a "an abandoned hotel on top of a mountain. It had 30 telephone poles on the roof, so there was electricity pulsating through the building, and everyone was shocking each other. It was cold as shit, and so dry.”
