During an interview with Marc Maron, Penn said:

"I just saw, what should be a disaster. I saw a remake, the third remake, of A Star Is Born. And if I could do that today, what he did with that story, I'd be staying in the game. But I don't have the perspective, and maybe not the skill sets. This is one of the most beautiful, fantastic, it's the best, and most importantly, commercial film I have seen in so many years."

"The two of them are miracles in it," he added.

A TOKYO ROMANCE: A Memoir

When Ian Buruma arrived in Tokyo in 1975, Japan was little more than an idea in his mind, a fantasy of a distant land. A sensitive misfit in the world of his upper middleclass youth, what he longed for wasn’t so much the exotic as the raw, unfiltered humanity he had experienced in Japanese theater performances and films, witnessed in Amsterdam and Paris. One particular theater troupe, directed by a poet of runaways, outsiders, and eccentrics, was especially alluring, more than a little frightening, and completely unforgettable. If Tokyo was anything like his plays, Buruma knew that he had to join the circus as soon as possible.

Tokyo was an astonishment. Buruma found a feverish and surreal metropolis where nothing was understated—neon lights, crimson lanterns, Japanese pop, advertising jingles, and cabarets. He encountered a city in the midst of an economic boom where everything seemed new, aside from the isolated temple or shrine that had survived the firestorms and earthquakes that had levelled the city during the past century. History remained in fragments: the shapes of wounded World War II veterans in white kimonos, murky old bars that Mishima had cruised in, and the narrow alleys where street girls had once flitted. Buruma’s Tokyo, though, was a city engaged in a radical transformation. And through his adventures in the world of avant garde theater, his encounters with carnival acts, fashion photographers, and moments on-set with Akira Kurosawa, Buruma underwent a radical transformation of his own. For an outsider, unattached to the cultural burdens placed on the Japanese, this was a place to be truly free.

IT’S BETTER THAN IT LOOKS: Reasons for Optimism in an Age of Fear

Most people who read the news would tell you that 2017 is one of the worst years in recent memory. We're facing a series of deeply troubling, even existential problems: fascism, terrorism, environmental collapse, racial and economic inequality, and more.

Yet this narrative misses something important: by almost every meaningful measure, the modern world is better than it ever has been. In the United States, disease, crime, discrimination, and most forms of pollution are in long-term decline, while longevity and education keep rising and economic indicators are better than in any past generation. Worldwide, malnutrition and extreme poverty are at historic lows, and the risk of dying by war or violence is the lowest in human history.

It's not a coincidence that we're confused--our perspectives on the world are blurred by the rise of social media, the machinations of politicians, and our own biases. Meanwhile, political reforms like the Clean Air Act and technological innovations like the hybridization of wheat have saved huge numbers of lives. In that optimistic spirit, Easterbrook offers specific policy reforms to address climate change, inequality, and other problems, and reminds us that there is real hope in conquering such challenges. In an age of discord and fear-mongering, It's Better Than It Looks will profoundly change your perspective on who we are, where we're headed, and what we're capable of.

FRESHWATER

An extraordinary debut novel, Freshwater explores the surreal experience of having a fractured self. It centers around a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born “with one foot on the other side.” Unsettling, heartwrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater is a sharp evocation of a rare way of experiencing the world, one that illuminates how we all construct our identities.

Ada begins her life in the south of Nigeria as a troubled baby and a source of deep concern to her family. Her parents, Saul and Saachi, successfully prayed her into existence, but as she grows into a volatile and splintered child, it becomes clear that something went terribly awry. When Ada comes of age and moves to America for college, the group of selves within her grows in power and agency. As Ada fades into the background of her own mind and these alters—now protective, now hedonistic—move into control, Ada’s life spirals in a dark and dangerous direction.

POLITICAL TRIBES: Group Instinct and the Fate of Nations

Humans are tribal. We need to belong to groups. In many parts of the world, the group identities that matter most – the ones that people will kill and die for – are ethnic, religious, sectarian, or clan-based. But because America tends to see the world in terms of nation-states engaged in great ideological battles – Capitalism vs. Communism, Democracy vs. Authoritarianism, the “Free World” vs. the “Axis of Evil” – we are often spectacularly blind to the power of tribal politics. Time and again this blindness has undermined American foreign policy.

Just as Washington’s foreign policy establishment has been blind to the power of tribal politics outside the country, so too have American political elites been oblivious to the group identities that matter most to ordinary Americans – and that are tearing the United States apart. As the stunning rise of Donald Trump laid bare, identity politics have seized both the American left and right in an especially dangerous, racially inflected way. In America today, every group feels threatened: whites and blacks, Latinos and Asians, men and women, liberals and conservatives, and so on. There is a pervasive sense of collective persecution and discrimination. On the left, this has given rise to increasingly radical and exclusionary rhetoric of privilege and cultural appropriation. On the right, it has fueled a disturbing rise in xenophobia and white nationalism.

EAT THE APPLE: A Memoir

Eat the Apple is a daring, twisted, and darkly hilarious story of American youth and masculinity in an age of continuous war. Matt Young joined the Marine Corps at age eighteen after a drunken night culminating in wrapping his car around a fire hydrant. The teenage wasteland he fled followed him to the training bases charged with making him a Marine. Matt survived the training and then not one, not two, but three deployments to Iraq, where the testosterone, danger, and stakes for him and his fellow grunts were dialed up a dozen decibels.

With its kaleidoscopic array of literary forms, from interior dialogues to infographics to prose passages that read like poetry, Young's narrative powerfully mirrors the multifaceted nature of his experience. Visceral, ironic, self-lacerating, and ultimately redemptive, Young's story drops us unarmed into Marine Corps culture and lays bare the absurdism of 21st-century war, the manned-up vulnerability of those on the front lines, and the true, if often misguided, motivations that drove a young man to a life at war.

-It is truly an end of an era! Craigslist has officially shut down their Personals sections due to new Congress bill.

-US Congress just passed HR 1865, "FOSTA", seeking to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) misuse online personals unlawfully.

-They send their regards stating "Hopefully we can bring them back some day. To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!"

-Their Missed Connections was a very popular source of entertainment for not only star crossed lovers who missed each other but radio stations who made it a weekly segment.

Avengers: Infinity War Round-Up, Entertainment Tonight On Set Interviews with the Cast

$
0
0

-Crossover of the characters, Danai "geeked out a little"
-Cap's beard, Scarlett "he took prenatal vitamins"
-Thor's new do, Evans "it's working for him"
The massive cast:
-Ruffalo "I only have 4 lines in the whole movie"
-Mackie "It's like the first day of school when you come and then by the end of the shoot you want to kill everybody"
-Scarlett "A lot of us have kids now, when we all started out out we were young and unafraid" and Evans "Now I'm at the bar alone"

Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson

-2-3 years have passed since the events of Civil War
-their characters are a part of counter terrorism efforts and flying under the radar with no government support or the general public
-64 Marvel characters, huge Marvel trailer village "half are RDJ's"
-feels like 3 movies being woven into one for a greater cause in the films, they haven't had the opportunity to interact with 75% of the cast
-a bigger female presence, Scarlett has worked with Danai the most
-Black Widow film, would want to in the right context
-brings her daughter to set, Evans "she's so cute," a lot of them have kids now and Evans is "at the bar alone" with Scarlett saying "we're there for the pre-dinner drink but after that he's alone," Evans brought his dog so that's his child
-formed friendships became a family, great seeing how everybody has evolved over the years
-romances, no romance between their characters, Cap leans on Black Widow almost like they fill a void for one another

Chadwick Boseman and Danai Gurira

-the costume designers are amazing
-Chadwick talks about the picture he posted with Black Panther's, Cap's and Black Widow's chairs, got permission to post the picture
-how they welcomed Danai onto the Avengers films, Mackie is a prankster
-brought the Wakandan culture into the films
-the differences from Michonne and Okoye, different learning experiences from using a spear versus sword especially on her movements in using her weapon
-brought a team with him to learn different fight styles and training to play Black Panther
-good to have your own style for your own film and then to bring them all together for the Avengers film, Danai "geeked out" with all the Marvel characters coming to Wakanda
-Chadwick's family has visited the set but Danai said she is at work so no family but one day she wants to share her world with them
-the characters put aside the difference for the greater good, hopes people can leave the theater with that message and have a better understanding of the culture of Africa

Anthony Mackie

-it's cool and they are lucky to be a family "It's like the first day of school when you come and then by the end of the shoot you want to kill everybody"
-Russo's are very good with people, would never want their job because they are a rowdy bunch
-names as many Marvel characters in these films in 30 seconds, didn't spoil any characters not yet revealed to be in the film
-talks about the massive amounts of trailers, they belong to RDJ while they rest of them are in tents, feels bad for the other films filming in Atlanta because they took up a lot of the resources
-spinoff with Sebastian Stan similar to 48 hrs beating each other up, says he, Stan and Evans have a great relationship
-the ladies are more in shape than they are, they were throwing punches while the men were drinking protein shakes and talking politics
-they have never all been in the gym together, they would probably be competitive in the gym and somebody would get hurt, trained with the New Orleans strength trainer
-he and Stan, "Chocolate silk and vanilla silk almond milk" cut the check
-Avengers 3 very different, many shocking moments because it is the most human, interesting story line that they are sharing
-he has the "thighs of a God," wants to flaunt his legs and wants to have Falcon walk more instead of flying, flying is not for humans

Sebastian Stan

-very strange on set but many familiar faces, hasn't read the script nor has met the majority of people on set and most of his scenes are with Mackie
-does not know if the Winter Soldier is good or bad, it is up to question
-Falcon and Winter have chemistry of a buddy comedy friendship similar to 48hrs, he and Cap are in a good spot but they have changed due to their life experiences
-the trailer village shot were not of RDJ's since he hadn't been in Atlanta yet to film and that the trailer with the solar panels was probably Ruffalo's, everybody should go green
-work out regime very healthy, Hemsworth probably goes the hardest

Mark Ruffalo

-No Hulk and Thor in Civil War so they went off to do their own film "we'll go do our own thing, we don't need any of you guys," were looking for their own film to do together outside of Marvel
-talks Thor: Ragnarok, explore Hulk outside of Banner
-Evans has to deal with Ruffalo's close friendship with Hemsworth
-core value of the film is diversity, bringing everybody together to survive, what is right what is moral
-his kids have gotten to the age where they don't want to come anymore but his one daughter loves to come still
-trailer village is 2 parking lots, doesn't know where everybody is at, they would all meet up
-they are a family, very humble and good people, tries to be the greenest but the trailer with the solar panels was not his maybe Scarlett's new trailer
-the feelings between Hulk and Black Widow will never go away, will be hinted at in the films

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo

-everybody enjoys working with them, they keep everything light and enjoyable like a family atmosphere
-exciting to work with all these characters, different moods in the scenes with the different characters
-Thor has a special arc in the film
-Mackie brings great energy to the set, wants everyone to have a great time on set, getting a breath of fresh or a break is important
-it has become a rhythm filming these movies, actors need a lot of imagination coming into these movies
-many strong female characters coming in, 2 from the Guardians who have a connection to the villain Thanos
-culmination of Marvel films
-talks about Mackie flying, it is a lot physically for him to be up for 30+ minutes, needs a lot of core strength
-once in a lifetime event for all of them, it is a lot of stress

Anonymous Actor Talks about Behind the Scenes Drama on Han Solo Movie

$

0

-The main difference was efficiency in that Lord and Miller lacked it. “Phil and Chris are good directors, but they weren’t prepared for Star Wars. After the 25th take, the actors are looking at each other like, ‘This is getting weird.’ [Lord and Miller] seemed a bit out of control. They definitely felt the pressure; with one of these movies, there are so many people on top of you all the time. The first assistant director was really experienced and had to step in to help them direct a lot of scenes.”

-Howard only needed two or three takes. “When he came on, he took control and you could feel it. He got respect immediately. He’s really confident. A really easy guy to work with.” Production went by "very fast" under him

-The things that Howard reshot are more like do-overs rather than entirely new things. “It’s exactly the same script. They’re filming exactly the same things. There’s nothing new. [Lord and Miller] used whole sets. But Ron is just using parts from those sets. I guess they’re not shooting wide angle. Maybe to save money.”

-On Alden needing an acting coach: “Trying to mimic Harrison Ford is really tough. Lucasfilm wanted something very specific: copying someone else. Alden’s not a bad actor — just not good enough. You could see his acting became more relaxed. He became more Harrison-like. The coach helped!”

-The cast and crew found out Lord and Miller got fired the same way everyone else did -- via the internet: “It was crazy. They fired our bosses. Everyone was texting each other: ‘Did you see the news? Do you think they’re doing reshoots?’ It was messy. And it was crazy how everything got leaked to the press.”

-“They have to make [Solo] good after The Last Jedi didn’t make as much money as expected,” he says. “If they want to keep making Star Wars movies, it has to be good.”

Love, Simon Author Responds to Fans Shipping the Title Gay Character With His Female Best Friend

$

– Becky Albertalli clarified a lingering question that's left fans scratching their heads: In her novel Simon Vs. The Homosapien Agenda about a closeted gay teen, recently adapted as a film where Simon is a closeted gay teen... Simon is, indeed, a closeted gay teen. Specifically gay. Exclusively gay. Exclusionarily (?) gay.
– The response originated from some fans saying they wanted Simon to end up with Leah, his best friend. After other fans of the film started criticizing one of them, they claimed denying Simon possibly being bisexual was biphobia and bisexual erasure and people shouldn't assign labels to him.
– The film inspired some fans to come out to their parents and friends as bisexual after its release. While this obviously is not the place, b
isexual men are under represented in flim, television, and literature.
– Albertalli's new novel "Leah On the Offbeat" is a sequel to Simon andfocuses on Leah where she comes to terms with being bisexual. It releases April 24th. She's also written "The Upside of Unrequited" and the upcoming"What If It's Us".

"In this sequel to the acclaimed Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda—now a major motion picture, Love, Simon—we follow Simon’s BFF Leah as she grapples with changing friendships, first love, and senior year angst.
When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic.
She’s an anomaly in her friend group: the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.
So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high.
It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended."

ONTD, when have you seen (straight) fans ship gay male and female characters in straight relationships? And would you want to see a "Leah On the Offbeat" sequel film?

Angelina Jolie Is Secretly Dating a Handsome, Regular, Older-Looking Real Estate Agent

A source tells ET:

"Brad and Angie are both very secretive about their dating life. Angie has told some friends she isn't ready to date, but she has been seeing a handsome, older-looking man who is a real estate agent. "He isn't a celebrity or high profile in any way."

Pitt has also moved on:

He's very private about who he’s seeing, but he does continue to casually date. The women he sees are not in the public eye."

A Brangelina reconciliation is most certainly never ever happening:

"People talk about them reuniting, but it will never happen. "Things between Brad and Angie really ended poorly, and while they've attempted therapy with the [six] children [they share], they can barely be in the same room together."
