ONTD Original: 6 pop culture girl schools

With Picnic at Hanging Rock coming soon to our screens as a television series starring Natalie Dormer, let's take a look back at a few classics set in or around girls' schools.

Appleyard College
featured in Picnic At Hanging Rock (Peter Weir, 1975)

This sinister, eerie film about the disappearance of several schoolgirls is an Australian classic and basically invented Sophia Coppola's entire career. It was based on a novel by Joan Lindsay.

Christchurch Girls' High School
featured in Heavenly Creatures (Peter Jackson, 1994)

This film is a gothic, inventive true crime thriller about two 50s schoolgirls whose obsession with pop culture, fiction and each other led to murder. The renewed interest in the case ended up outing the real Pauline and Juliet, the former living a solitary, anonymous life and the latter - prolific murder mystery novelist Anne Perry.

Unnamed Montigny school
featured in Claudine at school by Colette

Okay this was set at a co-ed school iirc but this 1900 novel gets to be in the post anyway for its brazen lesbianism, causing scandal back in its day. Colette's heavily autobiographical Claudine series kicks off with an entertaining school story of teacher lust and teenage manipulation and drama. The English version was translated by the great Antonia White (author of another wonderful girls school novel; Frost In May). The above illustrations are from a recently released graphic novel version by Lucie Durbiano.

Marcia Blaine School for girls
featured in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
A witty, entertaining mystery starring an unconventional, bolshy school teacher and her faithful coven of pupils, "The Brodie set". It was also turned into a quite good film starring a young Maggie Smith in the title role. If you've never read the great Spark, this is the perfect book to start with. And if you've seen the awful Eva Green-starring Cracks, this is where it got its (very few) good bits from.

St Trinian's School
featured in St.Trinian's School by Ronald Searle

The brilliant, beloved cartoonist Ronald Searle's most famous creation was St Trinian's School, a darkly hilarious comic strip set at a girl's school. If all you know are the tarted up films, these strips are about a million times better and have far more in common with Roald Dahl and Charles Addams than Clueless. That said this remains a bop:

Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches
featured in The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy

Before Harry Potter there was the clumsy Mildred Hubble, and before Hogwarts there was Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches. Author Jill Murphy began writing this story at age 15, heavily basing it on her experiences at Ursuline Convent school, turning her friends and teachers into witches. Properly charming, wholesome stuff.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Reni Eddo-Lodge Discuss Feminism and Race in Writing

As part of the Women of the World Festival in London, Americanah author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Reni Eddo-Lodge, author of Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race spent an hour talking about feminism and race in their writing.

Eddo-Lodge talks about getting pigeonholed as a writer for being outspoken; they talk about how non-white authors face a burden of representation. Both writers talk about how they do not cater to white readers who may be uncomfortable with their topics/portrayals.

Adichie talks about the effects of colonialism and how postcolonial countries were "set up to fail" due to lack of attention to ethnic groups and languages when dividing countries though also recognizing how local leaders have exacerbated existing problems.

Adichie also discussed her previous comments on trans women, for which she received backlash. She upholds her views, saying that trans women's experiences are different than cis women's. "How do we talk about the needs of trans-women if somehow the orthodoxy is that it's all the same?" she said.

Deep Space Nine at 25: Roundup

$

As this is the 25h anniversary year of the seminal science fiction space opera Deep Space Nine, here's a round-up of some of the articles and news items that have appeared so far.

Deep Space Nine 25 years later: an oral history of the show that changed Star Trek

Summary: producers Ira Steven Behr and Ronald Moore, writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe and actors Alexander Siddig (dr. Julian Bashir) and Aron Eisenberg (Nog) reminisce about their time on the show. They talk about the characters developing, the heavy serialisation (almost unheard of at the time), the show's diversity and how Voyager coming along and being the more popular show left them in peace to do their own thing with lower ratings.

Firsts: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine cast looks back at its very first episode

Summary: Presumably culled from the same round of interviews as above, but focussed on the strengths and weaknesses of the very first DS9 episode: Emissary.

Deep Space Nine Is TV’s Most Revolutionary Depiction of Black Fatherhood

Summary: A great, lovely piece about captain Sisko and Jake's warm, realistic relationship. It mentions how Sisko actor Avery Brooks was drawn to the role because Sisko was a good, single dad, and how Jake actor's Cirroc Lofton's real life experience of his parents' divorce helped him bond with Brooks and consider him a real life father figure.

To Boldly Stay: How Deep Space Nine Upended Star Trek by Exposing Utopia's Dark Side

Summary: An interview with Ira Steven Behr, specifically examining how Deep Space Nine differed from other Treks because he wanted to look at the underbelly of the "perfect" Federation.

Alexander Siddig and Andrew Robinson to reprise their roles as dr. Julian Bashir and Garak

... in an expansion to the free-to-play action MMORPG Star Trek Online. A total of ten DS9 actors will appear in the expansion, and Armin Shimerman (Quark), Nana Visitor (major Kira), Rene Auberjonois (Odo) and J.G. Hertzler (general Martok) have already been announced. The expansion, Victory is Life, will be available in June.

New Alexander Siddig interview

Summary: Trek only gets a brief mention, but Siddig talks candidly about his brief stint on Game of Thrones (he wishes he could have got up out of the wheelchair), working with Ruba Nadda and Patricia Clarkson on the romantic drama Cairo Time, and his role as Ras al Ghul on Gotham.

ONTD Niners would you agree Benjamin Sisko is the best dad and will you find out what an MMORPG is to hear Andrew Robinson do the voice again

Wytches

Wytches by Scott Snyder

Noah Hawley's Doctor Doom Film will draw inspiration from The Winter Soldier

  • Despite the pending Fox acquisition from Disney (that is still a terrible idea fyi), Noah Hawley says he's still going forward with his Doctor Doom solo film.

  • “What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the king of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?” Hawley said. “It’s something that Captain America [The Winter Soldier] did really well, which was kind of make a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of, and I don’t want to say too much about it, but it is a mixture of genres.”

  • Hawley states that this movie is not meant to be a reboot / relaunch of a Fantastic Four film, per a mandate.
