ONTD Roundup

This Is Us finale discussion with creator Dan Fogelman!

0
0

At SXSW, Glamour discussed with This is Us creator Dan Fogelman and the cast about the finale and the question on everyone's mind: Who were Randall and Tess talking about going to see?!

Naturally, Fogelman's lips are sealed: "While Fogelman can't say where Beth is during that future timeline just yet, he does say that Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth) isn't going anywhere and "we don't have any other deaths coming in a present day storyline anytime soon."

Fogelman assures us that the cliff hanger will pay off and that it has been apart of the plan the whole time. Also mentions that they didn't purposely hide Randall's left hand (which sparked rumors about whether Beth and him were still together 10 years into the future or if Beth has died bc no one could see a wedding band lbr, they knew exactly what reaction hiding Randall's hand would bring out in fans).

Also brought up is what is Kevin's reason for traveling to Vietnam with his new gf - Tess' cousin Zoe!! Someone brings up maybe another Pearson sibling that Jack possibly fathered while in Vietnam - Milo wasn't having that though stating: "Hold on! Jack loves Rebecca! Jack loved Rebecca before he even knew Rebecca!" Also mention that Kevin appears to be sober still a year into the future!

Pacific Rim Uprising Press Tour: Interview Disaster, Special Screening, Cast and Crew + More!

0
0

– A special screening of Pacific Rim: Uprising will be at Vue Cinemas, West End in London tonight. You can get special tickets for screenings worldwide, including one in NYC attended by Boyega himself for a Q&A!
Uprising will present an interesting case for building franchises. The first film flopped domestically, making just a $37 million mid-weekend debut and $101 million total. But overseas box office, including $113 million from China helped the film make over $400 million, which cost $190 million to make. Typically films that flop domestically don't get sequels but studios are paying more attention to global audiences (hence the international release for this film).
– Cast and crew interviews include John Boyega, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, Scott Eastwood, Adria Arjona, Ivanna Sakhno, Jing Tian, Kanan Brar, and director Steven DeKnight. The actors from the previous film are proud of Del Toro for winning the Oscar(s).
– Day and Gorman were asked about fan enthusiams shipping their two characters, Newt and Gotliebb. Just watch the full interview tbh it's funny but Day said at one part:"I think there's something interesting too, we've seen many stories about the heroic guy and the heroic girl who find love at the end – but we've not seen many about the two oddball scientists who are forced to work together who are complete opposites who develop a real bond and love for one another – and I understand what they're responding to! And by the way, it informs what I do in the scenes. I think my character loves your character. You know, although he also would never admit that." Homophobia is over. (Also in the interview, Day said: "And they have sex, by the way." Gorman: "They do?")

– Boyega is supportive of including an Inclusion Rider in his production company's future projects. He said he liked having a larger role in the creative (and financial) process. Lots of new characters in this film who work on the Jaeger program.
– Rinko Kikuchi said that she and Jake Pentecost (Stacker Pentecost's son) trained as Jaeger pilots together, but that Jake lost his way and left the program. She brings him back here and helps him become a great pilot after saving the world with Raleigh at the end of the previous film.
Amara is a web-comic about the new main character played by Cailee Spaeny. It launched this last friday and precedes the events of the film. A new Japanese poster has been released.

The Brielle Biermann/Mike Kopech break-up saga continues!

Yesterday, I let you all know the sad news that US Weekly was reporting 'Don't Be Tardy' star and general Bravolebrity Brielle Biermann's split from longtime boyfriend Mike Kopech

Here is today's tea:

  • Brielle tweeted: “It is true. We have a lot going on right now we decided it would be for the best. What’s meant to be will always be" with a heart emoji

  • In a strange twist, her mother Kim Zolciak of Real Housewives of Atlanta fame had tweeted: “Not true doll.” in response to a fan's inquiry as to the state of Ms. Biermman's and Mr. Kopech's break-up

  • Brielle has also tweeted, perhaps ominously: Happy & excited for what my future holds😇💕

Source

i'll be honest: this news has shattered me in the wake of my own personal breakup and wanting the absolute best for brielle biermann. i wish brielle biermann would just be honest about the breakup or lack thereoff. or i wish kim zolciak would be the one to just be out with it already.

Surgical Resident Breaks Down 49 Medical Scenes From Film & TV | WIRED

Annie Onishi, general surgery resident at Columbia University, takes a look at emergency room and operating room scenes from a variety of television shows and movies and breaks down how accurate they really are. Would the adrenaline scene from Pulp Fiction actually play out that way? Is all that medical jargon we hear in shows like Grey's Anatomy and House true-to-life? Is removing a bullet really a cure-all for a gunshot wound?

Correction: We misidentified the type of worm in the Grey's Anatomy episode at 5:23! It was actually Ascaris lumbricoides, not Strongyloides

NPR World Cafe: Noel Gallagher Interview about Fame, Lyrics, and Kanye West

0
0

Talia Schlanger of NPR World Cafe interviewed Noel Gallagher about his new album, "Who Built The Moon?" He also performed. See some highlights I pulled below (TW for mentions of physical abuse under the cut):

- (2:14) Talks about his scissor player, Charlotte, who left her scissors in the wrong flight case and had to borrow some NPR office scissors but was upset because they don't make the right kind of sound. Plays "It's a Beautiful World". (You can hear the scissors come in at 5:10 if you're interested).

- (15:10) Talks about the musical inspirations for his new album, including Blondie (which inspired "She Taught Me How to Fly") and Kanye West (which inspired Fort Knox).

On Kanye West
- (23:33) About Kanye West: "He had a run of singles which blew me away, 'Black Skinhead', 'Fade', 'Power'. He's pretty far out, he doesn't mind speaking his mind, he's pretty funny (not sure whether he's intentionally trying to be funny), but he's a free spirit, man."

"When 'Black Skinhead' was out, I happened to be at a party and Rick Rubin was there, and he produced that album, 'Yeezus'. And I said to him, 'How much of that is him, and how much of that is you?' that track, particularly, because it sounds like nothing else he's ever done. And he said, 'Oh, it's all him'."

-He then follows that up by talking about how a good producer (like Rick Rubin and David Holmes) should really only be helping you find something within you and helping you bring that out.

- (27:20) Plays "Holy Mountain" live.

- (31:42) Talking about modern UK rock music, "I mean guitar music in general is pretty dire at the moment. It's not really got a presence."

- (33:44) Jokingly suggests that the rise of the coffee shop is responsible for killing rock music and pop culture, "Have you ever noticed that since the arise of the coffee shop, culture has disappeared, don't you think? People are horrified that they have to pay for music. Music! 'What? I'm not paying for that!' But what, twenty dollars for two coffees? 'Oh, absolutely!' I haven't got the brain capacity to process that information". Then goes on to say, "I blame Friends".

- (36:38) Talks about the emotional significance that "Don't Look Back in Anger" has gained after the Manchester bombing at the Ariana Grande concert. The interviewer plays a news clip of a crowd singing the song and Noel responds, "I was watching it live on the news. At the time I don't think I had a single thought in my head, I was gobsmacked, you know. It was only way after the fact that it proved to me, not that I needed any proof, how important music is, or a song to people. That in that moment of awfulness, and all the words that had been said by religious and political leaders leading up to that memorial day, things you hear all the time, one girl decided to break the silence with a song; it brought everyone together. Whether my song or not is irrelevant. If it had been a song by someone else, I'd have still been blown away by the fact that music is what brought all those people, shared this experience, and it was being filmed and the world shared it as well. It was a stunning moment."

- (41:30) Talks about how second guessing yourself hinders creativity. He says he hates the "Be Here Now" album because he "wilted under the pressure" of being a successful songwriter. Everyone liked it, it was critically acclaimed, but it became very apparent on tour that the songs didn't hold a candle to his previous two albums. "I hate it!"

On Fame:
- (44:20) Talks about "Be Careful What You Wish For". Before playing the song (at 50:20), the interviewer said some of the lyrics of this song broke her heart. Noel responds, "The first two verses started out as a message to my children about fame, money, and drugs and all that, you know, just be careful what you wish for. The following three verses are about, I sound pretentious here, it's a cautionary tale to other people's kids." He continues, "Fame is fickle, it's not real. Emotions are real".

On His Lyrics:
- (46:27) "If I'm doing my job correctly, my songs should say more to you about you then you about me. If I'm writing, and I'll read a line back and it's too personal, I'll just take it out immediately".

The interviewer asks where those lines go and he says, "In the bin. Because I don't like listening to personal songs by other people because then it doesn't mean anything to me. So your mom died, mine didn't. So what are we listening to here? My songs tend to deal with the universal truths of life. We all love and hate and lose and we all win sometimes. Within the universal truths of life lie magic. If you're being very matter of fact, 'this is a song about how my dad abused me when I was a child' I'm like really? It better be a good song because it doesn't sound like it's going to be a happy five minutes, you know what I mean? When I'm listening to John Lennon's solo stuff and he's going on about his mother, I'm not interested".

The interviewer points out how that was an interesting example to choose since Noel himself was physically abused by his father. He replies by saying that he's never written any songs about it, "Times were hard, the physical abuse...a lot of my other friends had the same, their dads were the same. It was the late seventies, early eighties, brutal times in the northwest. I never wanted to write about it, ever, ever. There's too much glory in the world to write about pain. Some people are good at writing about pain and the same as some people are good about writing the news. That's not what I do. I'm not saying that Elliot Smith discussing his past, or his present, or his mental health issues is any less valid than me writing about the glory of women. I'm just saying, that's not what I do. I couldn't do that".

On Parenthood:
(55:40) Talks about raising his kids. The interviewer asks how his notoriously strained relationship with Liam affects how he raises his sons to ensure they have the kind of brotherhood that he wants them to have, "Raising kids it's, honestly, the fundamentals are easy. If your house is full of love and respect, that's it. If you love your children and you love your wife, that is it. That is it! My kids are the happiest two lads...don't get me wrong, they will demolish everything that I hold true in my life if they get their hands on it... I'll say, 'Where's the thing?', 'Oh, I flushed it down the toilet', 'What? What've you done that for?''Because it was funny'. Fuckin' hell. And they fight like two cats and dogs. But they're brilliant lads; engaging, funny. It's because their environment is full of love and respect. And if you come from a home that's not like that, you end up passing that on to your kids, but someone has to break the chain somewhere down the line. So my family upbringing was in parts, it was, there was violence, there was real bad times, but the key to it all is your wife. If you respect your wife, the game's easy for your kids because there's nothing else. There's nothing else they need to learn".

(1:01:40) Performs "The Right Stuff"

10 2000's R&B Anthems w/ Dramatic Piano Intros to Ease Your Feelings Into (ONTD Original)

0
0

People argue r&b was at its peak either in the 70's, 90's, or even the 2000's, but the truth is like any genre, it's ever changing. 2000's radio were full of piano r&b hits about break-ups, loyalty, or not being able to move on. Here are some songs that might have gotten you in your feelings for no reason at all.

1. Be Without You - Mary J Blige (2005)

This is one of Mary's highest charting song on the Hot 100. Y'all probably remember her blue tinted face on those Myspace ads for her album The Breakthrough. Snatch us with that run:
HEEEEEEYyyyyyYYYYYYYYAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYeeeehhhhh

2. Circle - Marques Houston (2007)

Sister Sister actor/former group member of Immature/Jehovah's Witness Marques Houston showed us how much he grew up with this one. He gave us dramatic gestures, choreo, and fancy footwork in the vid.

3. Ride For You - Danity Kane (2006)

OG Fifth Harmony aka Danity Kane had some bops in the day (shoutout to Sucka for Love). They released this after their debut Show Stopper, but didn't gain much success with other releases other than Damaged.

4. Unappreciated - Cherish (2006)

Another short-lived girl group is Cherish, known for their crunk bop Do It To It. We don't hear of them anymore but apparently theres only two members left in the group lmao.

5. Addicted - Stevie Hoang (2007)

This is a lesser known song but you probably heard this from someone's Myspace profile. This really made me jump down the rabbit hole of other Myspace 'hits'.

6. One Wish - Ray J (2005)

Ray J of Brandy Norwood and Kim Kardashian fame had a couple of hits, including Sexy Can I. He paved the way for more whiny sounding vocalists today such as The Weeknd.

7. Goin' Crazy - Natalie (2005)

When I think of this song I think of dramatic middle schoolers who probably had this on their Myspace profiles thinking they've been through ~deep relationships. This Natalie girl has as much vocal talent as Cassie or Kim Kardashian, but I still jam to Energy (ft. Baby Bash) and You're the One.

8. Wait For You - Elliott Yamin (2007)

Idk much about this guy other than he was on American Idol and that you would have probably thought he was black based on this song alone. The melody reminds me of Never Had a Dream Come True by S Club 7, a ballad Mariah would consider 'schmaltzy'.

9. Don't Wanna Try - Frankie J (2003)

I believe Frankie J is actually an underrated r&b artist. You probably know him for being featured in Baby Bash's hit Suga Suga, but he had other good songs like Never Gonna Let You Down (featuring Krayzie and Layzie Bone) and How to Deal. Recently he teamed up with Baby Bash to make a joint album Sangria which is lowkey fire.

10. We Belong Together - Mariah Carey (2005)

I mean what can I say about this. A modern classic, iconic, etc. The mv was the sequel to It's Like That but We Belong Together's success, or really her 'comeback' Emancipation album cemented her status as a legendary songwriter, earning this song the title as one of the longest charting #1 on the Hot 100. Mariah mentions how she had to pay a 'pretty penny' to have songs Bobby Womack's If You Think You're Lonely Now and the Deele's Two Occasions to be lyrically referenced in the song.

I'm waiting for these songs to be sampled in the near future to make us feel extra old.
