Formerly the Baileys Prize for Women's Fiction, it awards a female author of any nationality for the best original full-length novel written in English, and published in the UK in the preceding year. This year the 16 longlisted are eight British authors, four Americans, two Indians, one Australian and one Pakistani/British writer.

The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar (Harvill Secker)Set in Georgian London, this is Gowar's first book. It was the subject of a 10-way auction, eventually won by publisher Harvill Secker.
Sight by Jessie Greengrass (John Murray)Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman (Harper Collins)This is Honeyman's debut and a huge bestseller in the UK. It won the Costa Award for best first novel.
When I Hit You: Or, A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife by Meena Kandasamy (Atlantic)Longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize (2018).
Elmet by Fiona Mozley (John Murray)Also a debut, this book was shortlisted for the Man Booker (2017) and the Dylan Thomas Prize (2018).
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy (Hamish Hamilton)Roy is a former Booker Prize winner. Ministry was longlisted for the Man Booker (2017) and nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction (2017) and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Fiction (2018).
See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt (Tinder Press)A reimagining of the Lizzie Borden murders, already optioned for TV. This is Schmidt's debut.
