(Sridevi is at 2:25 and Shashi is at 2:59)
Beloved and legendary Indian actors, Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor, were included in the In Memoriam segment of the 90th Academy Awards last night.
- Sridevi passed away at the age of 54 on February 24, 2018 due to accidental drowning. She was in over 300 films over the span of 50 years, and was often dubbed India's first female superstar. Not only was she the top actress of Hindi (Bollywood) cinema, but she also commanded the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada film industries as well. This is an extremely rare feat as most Indian actors are only prolific in one regional industry, yet she crossed over into several of them and reigned over them too. Sridevi was also a pioneer and broke many gender barriers in these industries as they were usually dominated by men. She had more clout, fame, and box office pull than her male co-stars and was paid more than them as well. Sridevi was granted the Padma Sri by the Indian government in 2013, which is India's fourth highest civilian award. In addition to her great acting abilities, she was also known for her beauty, dancing skills, and passion for painting.
- Shashi Kapoor passed away on December 4, 2017 at 79 years old from a prolonged illness due to liver cirrhosis. He came from the famous Kapoor family dynasty and was in about 168 films (both Hindi and English). Shashi crossed over to several British/American films by Merchant Ivory, and directed/produced a few Hindi films as well. He also made great contributions to theater in India via Prithvi Theatre, which was founded by his father, Prithviraj Kapoor, in 1942. Shashi was given the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government in 2011, which is India's third highest civilian award. He is sometimes known as the only good and worthwhile man from the Kapoor family (all of the other men in that family were awful people) due to being a gentleman, genuinely kind, and respectful towards women. In his youth and prime, Shashi was also known for his good looks and was a heartthrob.
