Kevin Feige On Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Michelle Pfeiffer + Spinoffs That Don't Exist for PR

$
0
0

– Kevin Feige spoke with Kyle Buchanan for Vulture about women in Marvel. Captain Marvel is due for release next year, and they recently hired a female writer (Jac Schaeffer) for their Black Widow movie.
– He also notes all the women from Black Panther, and especially notes Tessa Thompson from Thor: Ragnarok as Valkyrie, who made such an impression on him on the possibility of a film lead by these breakout actresses, such as a female Black Panther spin-off.
– Feige on Black Panther:“Even watching the audience at the Black Panther premiere respond to Lupita, Letitia, and certainly Danai in their action sequences … you watch Danai spinning around in that casino, taking out dozens of people, and you go, ‘Of course you can make a whole movie about that!’”
– When it might happen:“It is all about figuring out when and how. But by the way, many of them have already filmed additional scenes in upcoming movies, so some of that is gonna come sooner rather than later. All of them will be seen again.”
– Re: Captain Marvel and and the suit, Feige said a lot of scenes were shot on location, and since everything is filmed by paparazzi nowadays, Marvel decided that if pictures of it leaked, they leaked. "Most people are savvy enough to know they’re looking at a behind-the-scenes photo, completely out of context. So we don’t do things like rush photos. We released some concept art of her with different colors. People online have correctly identified what’s going on there.”
– Feige on Michelle Pfeiffer's Performance Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp:“I don’t want to say too much, but I will say that’s she’s every bit as iconic and amazing in this part as you would imagine. People ask sometimes about movie stars and star power and who’s the most exciting person to be around, and the truth is that once you get to know them as people, they don’t feel like movie stars — everybody is just a super-impressive human. But in a room full of movie stars, Michelle Pfeiffer rises to the top.”
– Feige recently corralled all of the actors from his films into one big tenth anniversary photo, and Michelle turned heads.
“You can tell how big Michelle is, because all the other movie stars are going, ‘Is that Michelle Pfeiffer over there?’”

Of course, Feige does not mention:
– Thor: Ragnarok cutting a scene where a woman walks out of Valkyrie's bedroom. Tessa Thompson pitched director Taika Waititi that Valkyrie should be bisexual based on her relationship with Annabelle Riggs in the comics.
– He tried to keep it in the editing process as long as he could, but it was eventually cut because it interrupted the "vital exposition" of the scene. Thompson recently starred in Janelle Monae's bi anthem Make Me Feel.

– Black Panther cutting a scene where Okoye and Ayo flirt. In the comic spinoff World of Wakanda about the Dora Milaje (special forces team of women), Ayo is in a relationship with Aneka (not featured in the film... there's been some conflating of Okoye and Aneka).
– Vanity Fair's Joanna Robinson profiled the warriors of Black Panther in April 2017, describing the scene as Ayo complimenting Okoye's looks and her smiling back, "leaning" into the WOW storyline. Co-writer Joe Robert Cole confirmed in an interview that was where the idea came from.

Joanna Robinson: In the rough cut of this Black Panther scene, we see Gurira’s Okoye and Kasumba’s Ayo swaying rhythmically back in formation with the rest of their team. Okoye eyes Ayo flirtatiously for a long time as the camera pans in on them. Eventually, she says, appreciatively and appraisingly, “You look good.” Ayo responds in kind. Okoye grins and replies, “I know.”

This quick moment between two warrior women on their way to T’Challa’s coronation leans into a current very popular run of the Black Panther comic. A 2016 spin-off called World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, and Yona Harvey is all about the relationship between two members of the Dora Milaje. The official description:

"A Wakandan love story—its tenderness matched only by its brutality.
You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but in this story they are
just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to become Dora Milaje, an
elite task force trained to protect the crown at all costs. What happens when your nation needs your hearts
and minds, but you already gave them to each other?"

E. Oliver Whitney: During a phone interview, I talked to Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole about the deleted scene and how it suggested a gay relationship between Ayo and Okoye. When I asked him whether it was originally written that way or if there was ever any intention of including the World of Wakanda queer love story in the film, he said yes. And then his explanation for the change got a bit muddled from there.
Joe Robert Cole: "I think the short answer is yes. I know that there were quite a few conversations around different things, different directions with different characters, and characters that we may have. We thought, ‘Well, maybe we’ll work it this way with an arc or work it that way with an arc.’
The scene you’re talking about, I don’t remember. I can’t remember the exact exchange you’re talking about, but I think it was really brief. I’m not sure. I know that it was not – there wasn’t some major theme through that we were looking to explore with that in terms of the story. We didn’t like, pull out a full thread of some theme. But your friend quite possibly could be right, or I’m maybe having a brain fart here and just can’t remember."

Mo'nique Disputes 'Donkey Of The Day' Title

Charlamagne gave Mo’nique the “Donkey of the Day” title (a segment in which the host selects a person who has recently taken a major “L” and quickly roasts them for their failures).
Mo’nique didn’t take to kindly to the title, and recently visited the morning show to defend her stance.

“What you’re saying to the community is, as Black women, you’re devalued. And if you stand up and you make a stand and you say ‘We need equality’ and we have to say what’s right and what’s fair. And then a brother that looks like me from South Carolina [says] that ‘[I’m] the Donkey of the Day,’ you [Charlamagne] have to explain that to the community.”

“You know what, brotha? You’re going to hear yourself a lot from me lately. You’re going to hear yourself around the world. We have to explain brothas like you, we do. And, when we watched that movie Birth of a Nation and we saw that man walk his wife into that master’s house, we watched him walk his wife in. Then we watched him go back and get ’em— you’re that brotha.”

Whoopi Goldberg lectures Mo'Nique on "The View"

Mo'Nique said that Netflix is "underestimating the black dollar". She believes Netflix lowballed her.
She was paid $50,000 for the film "Precious".
She fulfilled her contractual obligations, she "was done" and refused to go to Cannes to promote the film because it was not part of her contract and she would not get paid for going.
"This is what happens when you don't go up to that hotel room,"

Goldberg said : "I'm going to stop you because, contractually, when you make a movie, regardless of who you sign the deal with, your job is to go and promote said movie."

Mo'nique replied : "When you don't do what we ask you to do, we'll take your livelihood [the film executives said to her]. So for eight years my family has suffered and my career has suffered, because I would not allow those entities [Lionsgate, Winfrey, Daniels and Perry] to bully me. And because I did not allow the bullying to happen, this is what I sit in."

It ends with Goldberg throwing her hands up in the air and shaking her head.

- Kim Wilcox, the show's costumer designer, confirmed his return at the Costume Designers Guild Awards

- Ms. Wilcox went on to say: "He's a fine actor and... he is very professional and an incredibly generous human being, so I don't see why they wouldn't invite him back."

- Some background: In October, Charlie Heaton was stopped at LAX because he had traces of cocaine on his person/belongings. He was not allowed into the country, and missed the season 2 premiere. Since then, Mr. Heaton has not been present at any promotional events or awards ceremonies in the US, but is a consistent presence at events in the UK. Fans have been speculating as to whether or not he will return to the show, or even if his visa was revoked.

How does Stone Temple Pilots' new singer sound? + the band releases a new song

I think we can all answer Loudwire's question with a confident "he sounds like Scott Weiland." But anyways, the band has given new lead singer Jeff Gutt a slower song in their latest single, Art of Letting Go.

Is it an ode to Weiland? Take a look at the lyrics:

"I hope to see your smile again / But some day’s far too long of a road / The Art of Letting Go / I may be setting myself up to have to / Walk the streets alone / For letting go"

The album is out March 16th! Of it, Gutt says it's got a lot of vibes we don't see in music today, and that he didn't try to change anything and that this album has healed a few things in him.

I know he's not Scott, but the music released so far has been lovely imo.

- Riz Ahmed joined novelist Mohsin Hamid at one of the most anticipated sessions at the Lahore Literary Festival 2018 called “MC Activist”
- This is Ahmed’s first time visiting Pakistan in 13 years and first time visiting Lahore; likens it to visiting an ex
- Amazed at how Pakistan has changed and how out of touch families who migrated in the 60s and 70s are from it (like his parents)
- Talks about how creating is an act of defiance and survival because of the issues that people of color deal with, which Hamid agrees with saying it’s a way to combat the helplessness people feel and make connections with others
- Wants to try to connect with other creatives and artists in Pakistan to collaborate
- Hamid asks Riz what he thinks about his "ex"/Pakistan, to which he responds “The ex is looking good. Changed a lot... really changed. Kinda still playing hard to get, ever mysterious and a little schizophrenic."

The audience also requested Riz to perform, to which he obliged:

ONTD Original: Talking About (4) of the Oscar Nominees for Best Animated Feature

$
0
0
The 90th Oscars are in one week! And while it will never be as legendary as the 89th (actually this one is shaping up to be pretty boring), there are some shakeups among us in the nominees.

For your remembering pleasure, here are the five pictures nominated for Best Animated Feature, courtesy of this post;

  • The Boss Baby

  • Coco

  • Loving Vincent

  • The Breadwinner

  • Ferdinand

Everyone's first reactions were basically - "Really? The Boss Baby?", and mine was too. At the time of the announcement, I had only seen Cocothree times, so I felt the need to watch as many of the others as I could to give a fair shake before Oscar night.
Or, a reasonably fair shake. Ferdinand was the only one that was removed from theaters before I had a chance to see it, and it hasn't been available for rent as of this writing.

But four out of five isn't bad, is it? To make up for that, I'll have an animated movie I did see that didn't get nominated - that I feel deserved to. Any guesses as to what it is?
So let's talk about the artistic impressions - and chances - each of these movies have to take home the gold.

Spoilers will be kept to a minimum.

The Breadwinner

From Cartoon Saloon, the people who brought us The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, Parvana is an eleven-year-old girl, who takes it upon herself to masquerade as a boy to provide for her family when her father is wrongfully imprisoned.  With her perseverance that pushes her to be just a little bit braver than the day before, you quickly begin to like her.
CS films have always faltered in their third act to me, and were never able to recover in the final stretch. The Breadwinner thankfully, mostly, averts that.
Can it (bread) win?:
Let's pretend that the Academy loves the capability of the medium to tell creative stories and not just the most commercial movie when it comes to this category search your heart, you know it to be true.
One thing all four of the nominated movies I'm talking about today are either wholly in a new art method or use art shifts prominently - I think this is the film that uses it most effectively - and consistently well done - to illustrate the vivid story Parvana tells throughout the movie.

Loving Vincent

The "mystery" surrounding the death of Van Gogh that I'm not sure anyone was really curious about.
The heart and soul was truly put into the technique of the visuals - the live action cast filmed against a green screen, then oil painters painted each frame to make the animation. It's definitely an incredible accomplishment, though sometimes aspects are so stylized, it's a bit difficult to tell what's happening.
Will the Academy love it?: The story is a little too unengaging, a passive, painted role playing game than something you're really itching to discover. This was nominated on style alone, and rightfully so.
The Boss Baby
We were all kind of shocked at this one, weren't we.
A little boy is jealous of the new baby in the house...that turns out to be a spy for a rival corporation than the one his parents work at.

The sole nomination of this film is what makes me believe someone is looking out for how well a cartoon just acts like a cartoon. The Breadwinner and Loving Vincent are two movies with fairly serious subject matter that just happen to be animated - animation is a medium, not a genre after all.

This movie doesn't take itself seriously. That's not to say the other movies shouldn't, but this knows that it's animated and wholly has fun with itself, being both funny, disturbing, and visually clever with it's style changes that harken back to the 50's and 60's.

Will it be the Boss?: No. Is there really a need to say more than that? No again.

Coco

Miguel wants the blessing of his ancestors to follow his dream to play music in a family that hates it.
Just seeing the trailers should be enough to see the effort that was put into this - animated thousands of marigold petals, millions of lights, and clothing over bones. Bones! As well as giving skeletons a variety of expressions?
So much of the lighting was wonderful, so many things have an internal glow, or has stark contrast that lights up the Land of the Dead, this is an astonishingly beautiful movie. It is rather conventionally styled - there's an art shift in the beginning but that's it - but the movie isn't the worse for it, Coco takes this limits of what we consider 'ordinary' CGI to a new and beautiful level.
This is a movie that could only really be done with animation to not look...very strange. And slightly disarming.
I can't make a pun here - Is it gonna win?: Yes. Not only because the Academy is in Disney's pocket, but because it genuinely deserves it. I put this one semi-last because we all know what is going to win.

Onto the one movie that was not nominated but really could have been:

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
"It should have been Lego Batman!" That was never gonna make it considering the OG Lego Movie didn't.

The red-headed step child of the distribution deal between 20th Century Fox and Dreamworks Animation (as well as the last feature to be released by 20CF before Dreamworks moved to Universal) focuses on two boys and their creation - a half naked man fighting crime.
With puppets, hand drawn CGI (if that makes any kind of sense), there's a lot of variety in style in this movie. Most importantly, it didn't make all the characters look hyper-real from their book counterparts, which were just crude, 2D drawings.

Can you imagine these characters looking as humanoid as the other CGI animated movies with people? Absolutely terrifying.

Enough about what I think, what do you think about the animated movies nominated this year? What did you want to see nominated?
