+ Despite being nominated, there was no guarantee either musician would be in attendance for the March 4th ceremony.
+ Both were convinced by their respective directors to go.
+ Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino has come through with a tux for Stevens to wear. He’ll be outfitted in Gucci.
+ Paul Thomas Anderson told Greenwood: ‘Either you come and you’re dressed like an idiot, and that’d be brilliant. Or you come and you have to say something on stage, which would also be brilliant. So win-win for me'.
+ Sufjan is nominated for Best Original Song and Jonny is up for Best Original Score.

McDonalds is cutting cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meals

McDonald's is removing cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu in an effort to cut down on the calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar that kids consume at its restaurants.

• You can still order cheeseburgers or chocolate milk with your Happy Meals by simply asking. The fast-food company said that not listing them will reduce how often they're ordered.

• The company says by the end of 2022, at least 50 percent or more of the Happy Meal options listed on menus will meet new global Happy Meal nutrition criteria: Meals will have 600 calories or less; no more than 10 percent of calories from saturated fat; no more than 650 mg sodium; and no more than 10 percent of calories from added sugar.

• The changes go into effect this June.

• The company also commits to "help serve more fruit, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lean protein and water in Happy Meals," according to the company release.

BTS is Billboard Magazine's cover story

- Article opens explaining their many accolades (their most recent EP Love Yourself: Her sold 1.58 million physical copies, DNA and Mic Drop both charted in the Billboard Top 100, in the U.S. alone they have 1.6 million song downloads and 1.5 billion streams)
- Dives into how their lyrical content and their song production sets them apart from other k-pop bands. Their music resonates worldwide because they sing about how the world is set up to make the younger generations fail.
- RM: "Honestly, from our standpoint, every day is stressful for our generation. It’s hard to get a job, it’s harder to attend college now more than ever. Adults need to create policies that can facilitate that overall social change. Right now, the privileged class, the upper class needs to change the way they think.”
- Suga: “And this isn't just Korea, but the rest of the world. The reason why our music resonates with people around the world who are in their teens, 20s and 30s is because of these issues.”
- Suga in particular speaks out a lot in this interview, which is rare for a k-pop group. The author notes how leader RM tries to give very neutral answers, but that Suga ends up continuing to speak despite it being possibly controversial in South Korea:

  • His thoughts on public protesting of President Park Geun-hye: “Moving past right and wrong, truth and falsehood, citizens coming together and raising their voice is something that I actively support.”

  • His thoughts on the suicide of Jonghyun of SHINee: "It was a shock to everyone, and I really sympathized with him. I really want to say that everyone in the world is lonely and everyone is sad, and if we know that everyone is suffering and lonely, I hope we can create an environment where we can ask for help, and say things are hard when they’re hard, and say that we miss someone when we miss them."

  • The author asks RM about a tweet where he said he liked Macklemore's song Same Love, and RM gives a very winding and neutral answer, but then Suga just responds: "There’s nothing wrong [with being LGBT]. Everyone is equal."

- Discusses the formation of the band, how they all found their roles within the band, and how they work together to resolve issues. RM says, "It’s like an agora in ancient Greece: We gather and we ask: ‘What happened?’"

- Their go-to thing is making sarcastic comments to one another.
- RM's favorite food is samgyeopsal, which is grilled pork belly.
- Jin's guilty pleasure is eatting three steaks???
- J-Hope's fav color is green, also his autograph looks like a tree
- Suga's favorite movie is Tazza: The High Rollers.
- Jimin/Taehyung/Jungkook don't share anything and OP is bitter.

Queer Eye Round-up

$

- The new Fab 5 react to millenial trends such as thirst traps, invisible jeans, squiggly eyebrows, and videos of people chewing food next to a mic (what??)

- Jai talks about how they had no idea QEftSG would even be successful
- Carson's face looks less plastic
- Thom Filicia is a silver fox now
- Bobby worked at a Restoration Hardware where the original Queer Eye filmed an episode (and got fired the same day they were shooting)

- Bobby gets very little info on the guys they are making over and his house, but he runs with it and does pre-design work based on that.
- Sometimes there are 20 or 30 people inside the house doing work in order for them to meet the deadline
- In one episode the house was infested with termites and they had to tear down several walls. The house was basically about to collapse and the owner had no idea.
- Remi (the guy who lived in his grandmother's house) was his favourite to makeover.
- AJ (the guy they helped to come out) put his condo on the market the next day after the show and sold it. Now lives with his BF

- It was totally random that Karamo was driving that day (they do 'rock, paper, scissors' for who gets to drive)
- Henry the cop and Cory's other police friends arranged with the producers to pull over the Queer Eye car, but the Fab 5 were not told
- He didn't have his license on him because the producers have all their stuff and they follow in their own car.

China's CCTV Spring Festival Gala features blackface in racist skit

$

  • China's annual CCTV Spring Festival Gala is watched by over 700 million people every year

  • This year, one of the sketches titled “Share the Same Joy and Happiness” (“同喜同乐”), was supposed to represent a scene in Kenya, where a Chinese host, local people, and railway staff are celebrating the opening of the deluxe rail line between Nairobi and Mombasa, built by China

  • Opens with a performance by African dancers and then moves on to a conversation between the host and his African friend, who asks for his help to get out of a blind date arranged by her mother (who was wearing a fruit basket on her head and was padded with a large bottom; she also arrived at the scene accompanied by an actor in a monkey costume)

  • After some more wtf-ery the skit ends with the mother stating she can’t be angry "because China has done so much for Africa", and later saying “I love Chinese people! I love China!”

How figure skaters choose their music, explained with Adam Rippon

$

2018 Olympic medalist Adam Rippon, and music designer Hugo Chouinard helps explain how figure skaters pick their music.

The 1932 Winter Olympics was the first time figure skating was performed to music. Today, music is an essential part of the sport and there’s a hidden strategy behind how they pick their songs. For a long time, figure skaters skated to classics like Carmen, Swan Lake, and Don Quixote. Not only because it’s great music but because of the clear story line and the dynamic characters in them. But this is all changing. In 2014, the ISU changed the music rules to allow skaters to skate to music with lyrics.

- they decided to make a joint statement to reduce speculation

- "This decision was mutual and lovingly made at the end of last year. We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship. Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly. Whatever else is printed about us that is not directly from us, is someone else’s fictional narrative. Above all, we are determined to maintain the deep respect and love that we have for one another.
