Sony Pictures apologizes for their stupid as hell allergy scene in "Peter Rabbit"

$

Said Sony Pictures after the backlash this weekend (following up from the previous bullying post):

“Food allergies are a serious issue. Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s archnemesis, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way. We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize.”

I just want another place to shit on this godawful movie. The scene being referenced is when the rabbits are attacking Domhnall Gleeson's character, and knowing he has a blackberry allergy, shoot one in his mouth, causing him to go into anaphylaxis (he saves himself with a epipen).

Lupita Nyong’o for Allure Magazine

“Lupita and I wanted to show that coil-y or kinky hair has many strengths and can be worn in lots of different ways, celebrating its beauty and versatility. Loving your true texture is important.”

"One thing I’ve learned was the acronym LOC, and that’s basically the rule for how to treat my hair: liquid, oil, and then cream. It’s the idea that you wet your hair first, then you add oil so that it can trap the moisture in, then you put a moisturizer or a cream over it. Shea butter, natural shea butter — no perfumes, no bleaches — which doesn’t smell great at all, but it does wonders to my hair."

Sexual Harassment in Children's Book Industry comes to light, Bestselling authors named as harassers

$

Writer Anne Ursu ran a survey about sexual harassment on the Children's Book Industry. She's recently posted the results, and they're as damning as you'd think. From NYT bestselling authors grabbing knees under the table, verbal and sexual assault happening in editorial offices and considered a "rite of passage", illustrators being inappropriate to students... you name it. Many cases were reported to conference management, and although they said they'd take steps, the authors were invited to speak in following conferences anyway.

I recommend reading the entire article for the full scope of the situation.

A second article, by the School Library Journal, also mentions cases relating to David Diaz and Guiseppe Castellano. After an outcry on twitter about whisper networks, and younger writers being afraid for themselves, some victims have taken to the SLJ article to name names. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of NYT Bestsellers on it.

Jay Asher (13 Reasons Why)
James Dashner (Maze Runner)
Sherman Alexie (The Absolute Diary of a Part-Time Indian)
James A Owen (Here Be Dragons)
Stephan Pastis (Pears Before Swine)
Richard Paul Evans (Michael Vey series)
Tristina Wright (27 Hours)
Tessa Gratton (Queens of Innis Lear, The Blood Journals)
Mo Willems (Don't Let the Pigeon Drive The Bus)
Chris Howard (Rootless)
Tim Federle (Better Nate Than Never)
Matt de la Peña (Last Stop On Market Street)
Peter Yarrow (Puff the Magic Dragon)
E. B. Lewis (illustrator of My Best Friend by Mary Ann Rodman)
Drew Daywalt (The Day The Crayons Quit)

SCBWI, RWA, and other conference organizers have said they're taking measures to crack down on sexual assault. I hope they do, and don't just brush concerns aside like they've done before.

I've met some of these guys. Jay Asher was known for being a notable creep for YEARS (who had no business writing 13 Reasons Why), and Dashner was a bit too friendly. He creeped around me for a while at a conference, but I left early and didn't experience/witness anything (this is not to clear him, as my lack of experience doesn't mean he couldn't have harassed someone else). My heart broke when I heard of Sherman Alexie, because TADOAPI is an amazing book I will never read again.

To the victims coming forward: I hear you. Thank you for speaking.

Edited to add more names.

Lana Del Rey answers questions from her famous friends and fans, is developing a Broadway musical?

Lana Del Rey graces the cover of the maiden issue of L'Officiel USA, and in celebration the notoriously enigmatic star opened up to a collection of her closest contemporaries and collaborators about an equally diverse array of subjects. She also answered questions from some of her devoted fans, revealing plans to take Broadway in the process. Below, some of the best questions - and answers.

Kim Kardashian West
You have such amazing style and I love how you’ve been able to turn retro classic looks into your own. Who was your biggest beauty influence growing up?

I was sort of a late bloomer with style and everything really. I loved Joan Baez—I just really identified with her character. I loved Lauren Bacall. I saw a rerun of The Dick Clark Show with Janice Joplin on it and she had feathers in her hair and I thought she was so cool, so her as well. And I really like what you’re doing now. I love your style update, with your hair and the nudes and mauves. I’m watching you. I’ve got my eye on you.

Courtney Love
Make me a favorite song playlist right now.

Okay. Hole, “Celebrity Skin.” The Flamingos, “I Only Have Eyes for You.” Migos, “Bad and Boujee.” A$AP Rocky, “L$D.” Simon & Garfunkel, “Scarborough Fair.” Janis Joplin, “Mercedes Benz.” The Eagles, “Hotel California." Lou Reed, “Perfect Day.”

What’s your favorite song on Lust for Life?
I like “Coachella,” actually. I put it in the song exactly the way I was thinking about it driving home. I love when I can do that. And for me, it was such a culmination of things: Seeing Father John Misty, being with his wife; realizing there was a real problem with North Korea, that it was an impending, bigger world problem. It was to the point where I did not want to go home after the festival. I stopped at this crazy place called Rim of the World Highway in Lake Arrowhead [California]. I sat there, went to the redwood grove, and really had a moment with myself.

Stevie Nicks
Dear Lana, are we planning on spending the summer in our fantastic apartments in the Hollywood sign?

Stevie! Sweet angel! Yes don’t worry I’ve already began planning the summer but I was thinking we could spend half of our time on that boat we were talking (maybe shoot a video for "Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems.") I was thinking we could kick it off on the Summer Solstice — what do you think?

Grimes
What do you think about artificial intelligence? Do you think it will be good or bad for humanity?

I think it’s just a natural progression of where technology has been leading to up until now. I think the advancements of AI will be benefits. I don’t think it will get to the point where we are boycotting the robot community because they’ve taken all of our jobs. That said, I did hear that Amazon’s just become the first company to deliver via drone, which I’m very excited but also nervous about, because I’ve had such bad experiences with drones. So, don’t take my word for it.

Marina Diamandis
To what extent do you think our personalities are shaped by the way we look?

Up until this point in our culture, I think half. Hopefully, from this point onward, it can be less. It’s kind of like that nature-versus-nurture question. I think it’s similar in the way that you’re just living with yourself all the time. But obviously, when you have a strong personality, you can surpass any first judgment people may have on you.

Børns
What’s your most personal song?

“Heroin.”

Fan Submissions
Do you consider yourself a spiritual person?

Yes. I believe you are your own doorway to an understanding of something greater. I never think of how I can get bigger or better, I just think, How can I go deeper? How can I know myself more so that I’m a clearer conduit for whatever else is in the ether? Meditation’s a big part of my life. I was already doing that when I was young, thinking about what I wanted to do, things I wanted to manifest. And most of it was about the written word. I really like to channel through writing in my own small way. I don’t consider myself a truth seeker in that way. I’m just my own dialogue.

Have you ever considered writing and directing your own feature-length or short film?
I thought about writing a biopic about someone that wasn’t real. Actually, I was asked to write a musical, which I’ve started. It was for Broadway. I may finish in two or three years. Me and Rick have written something, so we’ll see.

"Posters" targeting '3 Billboards' around L.A. to get Oscar voters to not choose it as BP

Right before the start of Oscars-voting period (from February 20-27, btw, so get ready for hardcore schmoozing next week), someone(s) who clearly hated 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' posted the above photo around LA, as noted by the Vanity Fair reporter who tweeted about it. No word yet on how many of these images have been planted around L.A., but it's a start.

'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' is one of the top contenders for best picture at this year's Oscars (thanks to its 3 SAGs and 4 GG wins as precursors), set for March 4th.

ONTD Original: Books That Are Catnip For Bibliophiles

$
0
0

Book lovers, can you resist these books about bookshops, libraries, reading, and (yes) other books? Not likely! Here are 8 books that were especially written to make bibliophiles drool.

Note: non-fiction only! The fiction books about the pleasures of reading (which is a whole other niche) is a subject for a different post!

The Diary of a Bookseller (Shaun Bythell)

Shaun Bythell is the owner of The Bookshop in the tiny village of Wigtown, Scotland (pop.: 1,000), situated in a beautiful forgotten corner of Scotland. If that sounds like a dream, you're partly right. Sometimes, as the curmudgeonly Shaun (hilariously) tells us, it's also a bit of a nightmare. A cross between Black Books and Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops, Shaun's diary covers one year and is full of funny anedoctes and confessions about the day-to-day of being a bookseller. This is a supremely cosy read, and I believe any book lover will enjoy it. (You'll even get some nice book recs out of it).

The Bookshop Book (Jen Campbell)

Jen Campbell is also the author of Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops (and its sequel - both absolutely hilarious). Here she writes about the weird and wonderful bookshops to be found all over the planet (over 300!), definitely a delicious treat for any bookshop lover. (Fun fact: Wigtown's The Bookshop is featured here!).

She also takes us through the history of books, shares a ton of bookish facts, talks to authors about their favourite places, and of course to the owners of these bookshops.

The Library: A World History (James W. P. Campbell, Will Pryce)

If you're more of a library person, feast your eyes: a gorgeous coffee table book that combines lush photographs of over 80 magnificent libraries and a history of libraries around the world, from ancient Mesopotamia to modern China and from the beginnings of writing to the present day.

The Book of Forgotten Authors (Christopher Fowler)

Originally a column at the Independent, this is a book about "forgotten" authors, their lives (often very eccentric) and their works (once hugely popular, now obscure for a variety of reasons). If you like discovering authors outside of the new releases and best seller lists, this is a real gem. The sense of humour of the author is great, and you can easily dip in and out of this volume, or read it out of order. It also makes for some great discussions!

Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader (Anne Fadiman)

This collection of charming essays by a passionate reader is a fantastic treat to incurable bibliophiles. Here are musings about merging libraries with your spouse, not being able to restrain yourself from buying a book at a second hand bookshop, the differences between people who like to keep their books pristine ("courtly lovers") and people who prefer their volumes full of inscriptions and dog-eared pages ("carnal lovers") - and so much more.

Howards End is on the Landing (Susan Hill)

Susan Hill is the British author of The Woman in Black, among (many) other books. One day she looked at all the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of books she had in her home and decided that, for a whole year, she would not buy another new book, but only read (and reread) the ones she already owned. This led to her writing this volume on the experience, which is really a delight. Her passion for literature shines through, and readers will be treated to a full tour of her bookshelves and to many discussions of classic authors and books. It's a light read, a bit memoir-ish. There is a recently released sequel to this volume: Jacob's Room is Full of Books.

Words are My Matter: Writings About Life and Books 2000-2016 (Ursula K. Le Guin)

Literature lovers everywhere were saddened by Ursula Le Guin's passing this year. She wrote groundbreaking fiction that will live on for a very long time. In this volume are collected essays, speeches, introductions, and book reviews, where she speaks at length about literature, vigorously defends science fiction, and where the reader is privileged to learn more about her as a person and as an author.

84, Charing Cross Road (Helene Hanff)

This is a true classic of the "books about books" genre so get on it if you haven't read it yet. A collection of (real) letters exchanged between an American woman with a passion for old books and the London bookseller who sent her many treasures over the years. Their friendship is beautiful and touching. There is a sequel of sorts to the book, The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street (which I didn't know when I read the book myself!).

Cardi B : ‘Being a Feminist Is Real Simple’

Her take on feminism :
“Some people think feminism is great and only a woman that can speak properly, that has a degree, who is a boss, a businessperson… they think only Michelle Obama can be a feminist. But being a feminist is real simple; it’s that a woman can do things the same as a man. Anything a man can do, I can do. I can finesse, I can hustle. We have the same freedom. I was top of the charts. I’m a woman and I did that. I do feel equal to a man.”

The erasure of minority influence :
“The success of people like me scares people, that’s why they belittle us. If you’re a little scrawny man raised in a trailer in Alabama somewhere, of course you’re scared right now … They’re scared of the intelligence of the minority. We are a big influence and people want to take that shit away. People like Donald Trump, they’re always going to make us feel like we’re less. But it’s okay, because a bitch like me knows the truth.”

  • In one way, Joyride is long overdue, but in another, it’s a different record from the one she planned to put out circa 2015. “This is the best incarnation of the project yet,” she assured me. Then, producer credits on the record included Dr. Luke; given that Tinashe has vocally supported Kesha since then, I told her I assumed that’s no longer a thing. “Nope, no,” she said, matter-of-fact.

  • She thinks RCA is backing her now.

  • Joyride is out in April.
