New evidence surfaces about Richey Edwards, the missing Manic Street Preacher

0
0

Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers went missing in 1995 at the age of 27. His car was spotted near the Severn Bridge, but his body was never found. He had a history of depression. In 2008, he was officially "presumed dead."

Over the years, his sister Rachel Elias has campaigned to find him, and now some new evidence has come to light:

-In 1995, they were told he had crossed the bridge at 2:55 p.m. But now, they have learned that the toll booth receipts follow a 24-hour clock, thus making his crossing occur at 2:55 a.m.
-Elias says: "We were appealing to people to have seen him at certain times that day when actually those times are meaningless now."
-Richey Edwards would have been 50 this past December

Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner have a new HBO show starring Jennifer Garner

After temporarily disappearing from the public eye to escape the backlash that came from writing a public statement with Jenni Konner defending their friend against rape allegations and calling his accuser a liar, briefly coming back for a photo-op with the organizers of the Times Up fund, and disappearing again when she was called out for acting like she was involved when she hadn't contribute her time or money to Times Up, Lena Dunham is making her return with a new TV series 'Camping' on HBO. The series is an American adaptation of the British series 'Camping'.

The series kicks off on Walt’s (uncast) 45th birthday, which was supposed to be a delightful weekend back to nature, at least according to his obsessively organized and aggressively controlling wife Kathryn (Garner). But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier than thou ex-best friend and a free-spirited Tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman on woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten.

Elton John cancels concerts the weekend of Harry and Meghan's wedding

Elton was set to perform in Vegas on May 18th and 19th but has rescheduled those dates, likely meaning he'll be attending (and/or singing) at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. He and husband David Furnish attended William and Kate's wedding in 2011.

Meghan's friend and fashion designer Roland Mouret is rumored to be her wedding dress designer. He said Meghan knows what she likes and listening to her in the main thing you need to do to collaborate with her. Then he stopped talking about it. However, she was also reportedly spotted getting fittings at Erdem.

ONTD Original: The Spanish period piece craze

0
0

Maybe it's the accent, maybe it's the epic romance or the fact that it's a series format so you don't feel like you're watching a telenovela, but lately I've been noticing EVERY SINGLE WOMEN I know watches at least one spanish series set in the early to mid XX century (Note: I do not live in Spain). Netlfix knows this formula works, and not only shows them in the front page all the time, but also produces them, so maybe they'll keep coming until we all get bored.

If you haven't been caught by this strange phenomenon but enjoy love stories and pretty dresses, here I present you a list

Las Chicas del Cable(2017-?)

Probably the most well known internationally, this Netflix original series stars eyelash queen Blanca Suarez and her former male cast mates in another big spanish series, El Internado. To this day, I keep thinking the casting was completely intentional: familiar faces, actors that worked well together and a couple they already knew it worked, this series was destined to succeed. Romantic elements aside, the main catch of this series is not the love story between Alba/Lidia, Francisco and Carlos, but the story of the four main girls and the hardships of being a woman in the 20's, it's feminist message it's more than relevant today, you end up really caring about them and their friendship.

It also has a lesbian storyline that's well received in the community according to my search, and it's between main characters so it's featured a lot.

I'm still mad about the choice of music, it takes me out of my 20's fantasy but you should totally give this series a chance, even if it is just to support a show led by four women.

Velvet2014-2016

The most soapy out of all of them, Velvet is the one that for me started the craze. Suddenly everyone, myself included, was watching the love story between Ana the seamstress and Alberto the owner of the fashion house she works for. This one feels more like your classic telenovela, but the supporting cast had a charm that hooked you in. It's cute, funny and light, unfortunately, once you star noticing Miguel Angel Silvestre left to star another great love story in Sense8, the series goes downhill but like I said, the supporting cast was amazing and even if the main storyline suffers a little, you want to keep watching for them.
Plus, it's great to watch just to see how the women on the show fight to make themselves a place in the fashion world, from Ana and her designs to Cristina and Barbara's jewelry collection and Patricia's fight to be taken seriously in the company.

Shout out to Mateo and Clara and to my queen Rita for their superb work on carrying the series even through the dark times.

Gran Hotel(2011-2013)

Gran Hotel is gorgeous, honestly. You've probably already heard of this one because it's been broadcast everywhere, already has a mexican remake and Eva Longoria recently bought the rights to produce the US version. We see Yon Gonzalez once again starring as Julio, a man that goes to work undercover in the hotel to investigate his sister's disappearance and falls in love with the owner's daughter in the process. This series is captivating, it's mysterious and it has pretty people, pretty dresses, pretty locations, a love story and great performances, please do yourself a favor and watch this before the US one comes, it's on Netflix.

Like any long series, it starts to drag a little towards the end, but it's completely worth the watch.

Tiempos de Guerra (Morocco)(2017)

By now you should've noticed the actors repeat themselves over and over again. The latest addition to the list, it premiered on Netflix last month and it's been heavily promoted on my front page despite not being an original according to my search. This one I haven't watched yet, but it stars Amaia Salamanca (yes, from Gran Hotel and Velvet) and it's about a group of high society women sent by spanish Queen Victoria Eugenia to nurse soldiers in the Rif War between Spain and Morocco (hence why you'll find this on Netflix under this title).

This show highlights the role of women during war, and of nurses in general. The duchess nurse is a queen that manages her hospital amazingly even with men opposition and it's worth the watch just for her alone. It suffers from whitewashing, but it make a good point about how muslims are not bad people and they even save the spaniards' asses a few times, but yes, the handling of the setting in Morocco is not the best.

El Tiempo entre Costuras(2013-2014)

Also known as "The time in between", this series follows Sira Quiroga, a seamstress turned spy and it chronicles various important historic events of Spain and the world. Set in the 30's, every episode has the feel of a movie and it's based on a book that I also recommend. You can see how much money and effort went into this series, it's very well done

This one isn't as romantic as the other ones and you can see it was produced by a different company (all the previous ones were produced by Bambu productions) because it has a very different tone.

Poor Sira suffers a lot, but it's more of a series than a serious telenovela, so if you're not convinced by the others, try this one. Plus, like I said, we have a woman spy here, enough said.

All series mentioned are available on Netflix, if you have any other recommendations on Spanish language series, romantic or not, feel free to comment. Which one of this is your fave?

Idris Elba proposed to his girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre on Friday night. He got down on one knee while on stage in front of a crowd at a screening of his directorial debut, Yardie.

This will be Elba's third marriage. He was married to Hanne Norgaard from 1999 to 2003, and to Sonya Nicole Hamlin for just six weeks in 2006.

Only six months ago, Elba told Essence magazine "Am I ever gonna get remarried? I don't think so. Yeah, I don't think so. Marriage is an institution of sorts. And I've done it. It's not for everybody. It's not my life's calling."

  • Sorry Spice Girls fans hoping for a tour, Victoria 'Posh Spice' Beckham says it's not happening.

  • Ahead of it's fashion show tomorrow, Victoria is in NYC giving a preview of the Autumn/Winter 2018 Victoria Beckham Collection, she was asked by British Vogue about the rumors swirling around about a summer reunion tour happening.

  • Victoria responded: "I’m not going on tour. The girls aren’t going on tour"

  • When further pressed about the pictures posted of the girls getting together for tea last week, Victoria said: "It was so great to see the girls. We had such a fun lunch. It was really, really, really lovely. I still speak to them all individually, but for us all to get together was really lovely.” What are the plans, then? “There’s something so strong in the message of what the Spice Girls stood for. What is that in the future? What does that look like? We were just bouncing ideas around. Brainstorming,” Beckham explained, glancing over at her collection lined up on rails for tomorrow’s presentation. “But this is what I do."

Samantha Geimer says Quentin Tarantino called her to apologize for victim blaming her

0
0

  • Geimer was raped by director Roman Polanski in 1977 when she was 13

  • Recently audio of Quentin Tarantino saying she wasn't raped and calling her a party girl in 2003 on the Howard Stern show resurfaced

  • Geimer said that Tarantino called her to personally apologize and tell her he believed she had been raped

  • She says she accepted his apology and used the opportunity to talk about his movies because she's a fan of his work

  • She used to think she didn't care about apologies but says that the personal genuine apologies are helpful to her and she did appreciate Tarantino calling her

  • Mentions that Roman Polanski wrote a handwritten apology to her and her mother. She always knew the rape was his fault so it didn't matter to her, but said it made a big difference to her mother, who had always blamed herself.

  • Felt like people were using her rape to attack Tarantino when they didn't actually care about her or what she went through

  • Has mixed feelings on the #metoo movement as she wants victims to be able to come forward but also doesn't think that rapist's careers should end "Anyway, I don’t think someone who has committed a crime should be forever banned for gainful employment or creating art. That’s just stupid. We are all free to make own decisions about what we see and purchase, we don’t need others forcing what they call their morals down our throats and making demands of us."

For Jill: May your family find some measure of solace during this pain. That one man could cause so much damage is astounding, but tragically true. The bad man did this to us both. May you find peace on the astral plane. May you find serenity with the stars.

On February 7, 2018, Messick committed suicide after years of battling depression. Her family released a statement claiming the media, Weinsten and McGowan were components of what drove Messick to her demise. You can read the statement HERE.

This Swimwear Brand Is Under Fire For Their Lack Of Diversity

US brand Solid & Striped shared a snap of their '#swimteam2018' on IG. Commenters were quick to point out the lack of diversity between the high profile models .

The campaign has a lack of different body shapes and Jourdan Dunn is the only black woman (out of 13) on the shoot.
Solid and Striped CEO and founder, Isaac Ross's statement  :
"[...] When I embarked on this project we reached out to a broad and diverse pool of talent. The women with whom we collaborated had a genuine interest in taking time out of their schedules to be a part of the team. The intention was never to exclude anyone. I'm genuinely sorry Swim Team failed to represent a more diverse group of women. I acknowledge the problem and we will do better."

Bill Maher has meltdown defending Matt Damon and Aziz Ansari over #MeToo Movement

0

Bill Maher spoke with The New York Times Bari Weiss about the #MeToo movement.

Argued that Matt Damon specifically came under fire for his comments about the “spectrum of behavior,” arguing he said nothing wrong and was getting a lot of undeserved criticism.

Bill made a criticism of the Millennial Generation:
“I don’t think it’s the majority of them [millennials]. I think it’s the upper-middle-class kids who grew up screaming at their parents and that was okay. And they are just so fucking fragile––excuse me––I think of them as emotional hemophiliacs and the rest of us have to be so careful around them…”
