Fans Spot Gay Couple in the Solo: A Star Wars Story Teaser Trailer

$

– Not long after a SW fan tweeted that there are gay porgs in The Last Jedi, other fans are now pointing out the Twi'leks dancing in the new Solo: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer. Remember the confusion around the sauna scene in Frozen? We've come so far.
– Twi'leks are one of the most popular alien races in the SW universe, particularly in the old and new EU, extending from Mission Vao in Knights of the Old Republic to Jedi Master Aayla Secura in The Clone Wars all the way to Star Wars: Rebels with Hera Syndulla. They're also sexualized among fanboys, have often appeared as dancers and/or strippers, slaves, and in Return of the Jedi featured the first black woman in a SW film (Femi Tayor) who died a gruesome death (in facepaint). Think the Asari in Mass Effect.
– Fans continue to push Lucasfilm to have LGBT characters in their films, especially considering every recent director (aside from Ron Howard) has talked about it but no one has actually done anything.

About 0:30 in...

J.J. Abrams:

Rian Johnson:

Gareth Edwards:

Chelli Lona Aphra: First appeared in the Darth Vader comics, has since appeared in From A Certain Point of View and other places, and now has a series of her own.

Aftermath novels: Sinjir Rath Velus, among others...

Remember that one Stormtrooper who checked the hanger bay? No? Well...

Amilyn Holdo in Leia: Princess of Alderaan... (but considering it obviously didn't matter to The Last Jedi, it's a vague, comedic and teasing line from Claudia Gray who blocked young fans on twitter who told her Reylo is abusive Idt she really cares)

ONTD, what's the point of Solo origin movie if Han and Lando aren't together? And if copyright laws were vanquished tomorrow and you could make or reimagine any SW movie you wanted, what would it be?

(Also chill on making fun of fans having fun with this stuff... we all need crumbs sometimes)

Celebrities React to Paul Ryan Praising $1.50 Increase in Salary Due to GOP Tax Bill

– Rep. Paul Ryan tweeted out an Associated Press article, pointing to a high school secretary's $1.50 increase in salary as a sign of the GOP's tax plan working. “A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week ... she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year,”
– Critics dug into Ryan's comments being out of touch, especially considering the conservative billionare Koch family donated $500,000 to Ryan after the tax bill passed in November.
Democratic Opponent Randy Bryce made $150,000 in 24 hours off of Ryan's deleted tweet and aims to take him out of office this November.

ONTD, are you a devil in a skin suit who fuels your immortality through pure contempt for poor people? Also, I saw someone say they wanted a tax post.

Anna Biller (filmmaker behind The Love Witch) explains why we should stop calling movies feminist

$

- in the past few years everyone and their dog started calling movies "feminist", hoping it would give them some sort of stamp of approval
- very few films are actually feminist, it's just that the bar is set pretty low (a movie treats a woman as a human being, especially if the director is a man -> feminist)
- compares films from before & after the lifting of the censorship codes in the 60s
- pre-code films often had bold female protagonists & forced men to get inside the fantasies of women, as well as identifying with & admiring them
- post-code films were all about male fantasy and expression, so films aimed at a female audience became lowbrow
- rejects the idea that exploitation films can be feminist
- "By using the word feminism so often and indiscriminately, we are erasing feminist discourse. The over-use of the word feminism has rendered it entirely meaningless as a serious political topic, making it easier and easier for everyone to think of it as just a trendy subject or a buzzword rather than the very fabric of women’s lives. This is an effective way to kill a political movement, andit’s working."

ONTD Original: Celebrities Who Tried To Learn Other Languages

Lindsay Lohan (العَرَبِيَّة‎)

After that whole accent fiasco, Lindsay said that her new way of speaking was caused by her language studies. She claims to be fluent in French, understands Russian, and is learning Turkish, Italian, and Arabic. It's unclear if she's currently keeping up with her Arabic studies, but we will never forget the time she confused the word 'beautiful' for 'donkey' in an Arabic-appreciation Instagram post.

Ariana Grande (日本語)

Ari seems to be more of a dabbler when it comes to languages. Especially Japanese. She has studied the reading and writing of hiragana, as well as spoken some basic sentences or phrases in Japanese, but her conversational (as well as katakana-reading/writing and/or kanji) level is unknown — though, it's safe to assume she is still かたこと (katakoto), since she's been delving into it from time to time for years.

Selena Gomez (Español)

Being half-Mexican herself on her father's side, Selena has admitted to experiencing trepidation at Latin award shows and interviews because she doesn't speak Spanish. She explained in a 2010 interview with Latin.com that she can pick it up well through her listening skills, but her conversational level is as low as her confidence is in speaking it. She has gone back and forth in believing that she needs to speak the language in order to be accepted as a "real" Latina, which is seemingly true with some people, while others are more encouraging. Either way, Selena appears to lack a shield for the bad comments that get thrown her way, and the so-called "outrage" over her poor pronunciation in her Spanish-speaking commercials and songs seems to have discouraged her as of late.

Ashley Olsen (Française)

Ashley revealed in 2006 on Much On Demand that she's been studying French "for so long", from high school to college, and that she would love to be fluent in it. She even expressed interest in moving to France and living there for a while to really immerse herself in the language. However, she has never been seen speaking it publicly and it seems she has given up on it a long time ago. What is relevant in that same interview though, is Mary-Kate scoffing it off, saying, "we studied it in high school and just... never got passed the [beginner level]."

Justin Timberlake backed out of using a Prince hologram at the last minute

Justin Timberlake was “100 percent ready to use the hologram” for his Prince tribute during his Super Bowl halftime show performance on Sunday, sources say — but backed out at the last minute but nixed it due to backlash. The goal of the hologram, apparently, was to try and honor Prince. But Prince, in an old 1998 interview with Guitar World, said playing with a hologram of a deceased musician would be "the most demonic imaginable." Mayo gave one of the lowest rated and critically panned halftime shows. Katy Perry holds the record for the most viewed halftime show, "“4 years ago I was given the opportunity to make over 120 million people smile,” Perry wrote alongside a series of snaps from her Super Bowl set on her social media.

Oprah covers Wall Street Journal Magazine

In Oprah's newest profile about life after the Oprah Winfrey Show, she discusses how she was absorbing the emotions of her guests on the show to an unhealthy degree and how it took her some time to adjust to not being overscheduled but she's now more content than ever.

When she decided to leave Chicago, she originally looked at plantation houses in the South “I thought it would be the ultimate comeuppance, the ultimate finger. Like, ‘Look who’s in the big house now.’"

She realized there was no way for her to avoid the bugs and humidity so she bought property in Monecito instead and she has hundreds of avocado trees.

She takes photos with every fan who asks: "If you don't want to be a parade, then don't go to the parade."

Oprah still doesn't want to be president:"I do a few things really well. But I don't want to manage. I don't want to spend my days and nights creating policy. I want to continue to be involved with stories that allow people to see the best of themselves, to find a higher good."

She still signs her own checks.

Reese Witherspoon said Oprah could've had her own trailer for the 4+ hours of daily hair and makeup required for the A Wrinkle in Time shoots, but she chose to share with Reese and Mindy Kaling.

“One of the reasons I love A Wrinkle in Time is because I get to play this grand, wise, angelic creature, and one of the things she says is, ‘The darkness is spreading so fast these days; the only thing that is faster than light is the darkness.’ I really do believe that we are going through some dark times, so you have to make a choice not to be pulled into it,” she says. “Not just to resist but to transcend. I specifically work on being a carrier of the light.”
