Saturday night at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, SBIFF held a Virtuosos ceremony, where they honored Daniel Kaluuya, Hong Chau, John Boyega, Kumail Nanjiani, Mary J. Blige and Timothée Chalamet. Gal Gadot was also supposed to be honored at this ceremony, but she was out with the flu.

Here's the full video of their conversation on stage at the festival:

John had this to say about his fellow nominee, Daniel:

Sunday night, Saoirse Ronan was presented with the Santa Barbara award, which is apparently a big deal.

After being introduced by Timothée Chalamet, she sat down and was interviewed one on one about her work. Since they chopped up the interview into a bunch of clips, here is a clip concerning Lady Bird.

She also says she's taking a break after awards season:

Mathew Knowles on How Internalized Colorism Led Him to Tina Knowles Lawson

Maathew Knowles is promoting his latest book, "Racism: From the Eyes of a Child". He admitted that colorism was taught to him from an early age by both by his family and community.

"When I was growing up, my mother used to say, 'Don’t ever bring no nappy-head black girl to my house,' In the deep South in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, the shade of your blackness was considered important. So I, unfortunately, grew up hearing that message."

"I used to date mainly white women or very high-complexion black women that looked white... I had been conditioned from childhood. Within eroticized rage, there was actual rage in me as a black man, and I saw the white female as a way, subconsciously, of getting even or getting back."

"I actually thought when I met Tina, my former wife, that she was white. Later I found out that she wasn’t, and she was actually very much in-tune with her blackness."

He has worked through his issues with colorism through "therapy and sharing," the world has yet to catch up.

"When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids, and what do they all have in common?"

"They’re all lighter skinned."

  • On his sophomore album:“There’s definitely a lot of Urdu; some nice qawwali sounds. There might even be some bhangra vibes.”

  • Recorded 87 songs, only 10 will make it to the album.

  • On working with AR Rahman on one song:“It was interesting, because [my team] was talking to him first, saying, “Bollywood, Bollywood…” Then he came on Skype, and said, “There are a thousand different types of Bollywood. What do you mean?” I had to explain we wanted a more qawwali, sufi kind of sound, and he got it straight away.”

  • Confirms he recorded a song for a Bollywood film:“It’s one of the first songs I’ve sung in full Hindi, so it’s going to be cool to see what the response to that is.”

  • Says women in his family have always supported him. “With my father, he didn’t really get theatre studies too much, and didn’t ever come and see me at performances. But he’s slowly starting to get into it now that he sees my success.”

Riverdale Roundup: Shipwars, DILFs, Memes, and More

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa regularly likes to tweet the shit out of his show and stir the fanbase. And with his most recent tweet, the shippers needed to make themselves known (moreso than they already do since they already spam pictures unrelated to their pairing).

Even though Bughead literally just fucked (albeit off screen), the dreaded classic love triangle and the idea of Betty/Archie getting together hangs over their heads like some kind of boogeyman. Cue threats to stop watching alongside assurances of their pairing being the true endgame as if this show is above mixing up romantic pairings. And some random Betty/Archie shippers, but as loud as they can be, they're a minority.

TV Guide has ranked the dads of Riverdale as such

5. Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro)
4. Fred Andrews (Luke Perry)
3. Tom Keller (Martin Cummins)
2. Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos)
1. F.P. Jones (Skeet Ulrich)

Which is partly bullshit because Hal shouldn't be on these lists, and Fred can go too since it's not the 90s anymore. Also justice for Myles McCoy (Reese Alexander) and Coach Clayton (Colin Lawrence) even if they're just one-episode wonders

---

As with most of these teen shows, people like to guess who the breakout star will be with a cast this big. And right now, things are looking pretty good for Hayley Law who plays Valerie. If you've been wondering why she doesn't even show up in the background at Riverdale High, it's because she's been pretty busy with other projects. She can currently be seen on Netflix's Altered Carbon and was singled out by Refinery 29 as a breakout character. Their article was RT'd by one of the producers on the show.

She also filmed an indie movie recently that'll be premiering at SXSW which also features Avan Jogia and Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes. And she just signed to another movie starring 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford.

One can only hope that things look up for the other two Pussycats.

- In the show the world has the technology to download the human consciousness into a chip and that has led to bodies being interchangeable. So interchangeable, in fact, that bodies are known simply as "sleeves."
- He didn't graduate from high school.

On his encounters with fans:“It's a lot of hugs. People want to hug me, and they want advice. I guess I've taken over from Mr. Cunningham [of Happy Days] and Mr. Arnold [of The Wonder Years] as America's father, so people are often looking for that parental feeling.” The show’s earnest, heart-on-sleeve quality unlocks something, he explained: People will tell him about their own fathers, their adopted children, their bereavements.

On whether the show has changed his perspective on having a family of his own:
“I’m playing almost directly the era of when my parents raised my sisters and me; there were three of us, we grew up in the ’80s, I was a teenager in the ’90s. Everything [on the show] feels very close to how I was raised. The show hasn't inspired me to go have kids, I'll tell you that much, but I think the value of family—and not only the family you're born into but the family that you make and you create with your friends—that’s a message I’m often reminded of.”

On whether he's out of a job with this episode:“I’ve been dead from the get-go, and though we’re now showing the death, we’re still gonna be bouncing around in different timelines. This is not the end of Jack.”
