Katy Perry ends year of disastrous diva anthems with 'Roar'

0
0

Katy Perry fans got a special treat Saturday morning when her latest soon-to-be smash 'Roar' leaked online. After disastrous new songs from Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Mariah Carey disappointed music audiences, some feared that Katy Perry would follow the same path. She didn't.

'Roar' is a self-reliance anthem that deals with being held down and getting back up. It starts off with a creepy (in a good way) beat and leads to one of the best choruses in pop music history. She sings, "“I stood for nothing / So I fell for everything,” “You held me down / But I got up,” “I went from zero / To my own hero,” declaring “I’ve got the eye of the tiger” and “I am a champion / And you’re gonna hear me roar.” If the lyrics sound a little juvenile in print, you definitely have to hear them with the music.

'Roar' should be a huge hit for Perry. It would have possibly debuted at number one, but the leak forced 'Roar' to be released early. The first two days of sales -- which are often the biggest for a new song by a huge artist -- won't be included in next week's chart tally. They will be included in this week's tally, but two days of sales aren't enough for a song to hit number one. But we all know Katy Perry may be able to change the rules.

You can buy #ROAR right now on iTunes !!!

Next Food Network Star Finale: And the Winner Is...

Tonight on the season finale of The Next Food Network Star, Southern sweetheart Damaris Phillips, sin-loving underground chef Russell Jackson and self-proclaimed pie "expert" Rodney Henry were the last three standing to do battle for America's vote.

Celebrity superstars Alton Brown, Bobby Flay and Giada de Laurentiis, along with the unfortunately rarely-seen network bosses Bob Tuschman and Susan Fogelson and all the eliminated contestants were on hand for the reveal and a retrospective special.

About halfway through the episode, the judging panel eliminated one of the final three to make if the final two. It has to be Rodney getting the boot, right? If you read our piece on the final three, you all already know that we wanted the votes to come down to Damaris and Russell. We are hoping the universe heard our prayers.

Nope, Russell was canned first. We would be shocked, but after the judges cut the constant frontrunner and generally adorable Stacey Poon-Kinney last week, nothing makes sense anymore. Up is down! Cats and dogs living together…mass hysteria!

Anyway, after countless montages featuring the finalists, the judges and memorable past contestants like monotone queen Danushka Lysek and "meat on the side" Nikki Dinki, the winner was announced. So between Damaris' series about helping men cook Southern food to woo the ladies and Rodney's series that is basically Throwdown with Bobby Flay but with pies, which show will we be seeing on Food Network?

Damaris is the next Food Network star! And what do you know, we'll be talking with the Kentucky chef tomorrow about her big win, so check back tomorrow for our exclusive interview.

A couple of observations from the retrospective:

1. Rodney's montage of his favorite phrases ("Jack," "awesome," "pie style," etc.) and general attitude during the competition was video proof of why he shouldn't be in the top three. He had a limited vocabulary, was more goofy than expert and could not enunciate to save his undercooked pie-making life.

2. Viet Pham looked so dapper! We definitely missed his sense of style. And he basically got Bobby to admit that the judges had unfair expectations of his performance because he beat Flay in an Iron Chef competition.

3. Nikki revealed that she was 6 months pregnant during the episode, prompting us to come up with so many "meat on the side" jokes that our brains exploded. We're ashamed of us too.

4. All the points to Chris Hodgson for annoying Rodney in the never-before-seen footage montage, because now you know how America feels when they watched you this season, pie man!

Congrats to Damaris for her big win! And we're sorry for all the rants on Rodney, but it's been boiling up inside us all season. Thanks for letting us vent, guys. We feel much better.

Do you agree with the results? Or did someone else in the crowd of eliminated contestants deserve the win more than Damaris? Were we too hard on Rodney? Nah, we probably weren't.

Style empress The Man Repeller wrote a book, apparently

0
0
From blog posts to books, Leandra Medine is going beyond her widely popular site, The Man Repeller, with “a series of essays about [her] life, from childhood through high school, college at The New School, her blog’s success and her wedding,” Women’s Wear Daily reports.

She’s spilling it all, in chapters that are coincidentally, named after pieces of clothing like M.C. Hammer-esque pants. She details how she came up with the term “man repeller,” wanting to dress like the Spice Girls when she was younger—but really who didn’t?—and even her decision to marry. But it wasn’t easy.

Some parts of the book had to be rewritten several times. “I felt bad that I couldn’t articulate what I thought,” Medine told WWD. “I have always, always loved words. Nothing feels better than constructing a beautiful sentence.” We couldn’t agree more!

Medine’s book, Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls will be on sale September 10th, just in case you need reading material during Fashion Week.

Baltimore Orioles Adam Jones: Banana Thrown his Way

0
0
 photo adamjonesamerican081113_zpsd2102218.jpg

Just last week, a statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese in Brooklyn was vandalized with racist slurs and Hitler references. It was another reminder — like we needed one — that "post-racial America" is a fairytale until further notice.

A statue, made of stone, is bad enough. But Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles is a person, and what happened to him at AT&T Park on Sunday was just as unacceptable. Jones, who is black, said somebody threw a "banana towards my direction" in the ninth inning of Baltimore's 10-2 victory against the San Francisco Giants.

Bananas have been used, time immemorial, in racist depictions of blacks as being subhuman. In 2011, a white fan threw a banana peel at NHL player Wayne Simmonds, who is black, during a game in London, Ont. Canada.

Worse than graffiti, what happened to Simmonds and Jones is tantamount to being spat upon, with an added insult of racism. In 2013, such behavior cannot be tolerated.

Jones expressed his feelings on Twitter, using (understandably) NSFW language:

I want to thank whatever [slapd---] threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jackass.

In a way, Jones is being kind by using a (NSFW) slang term used to describe a dunce who doesn't quite know what he or she is doing. After sending his tweet, Jones fielded replies from more ignorant fans defending the banana thrower. As a result, Jones says:

Good chance this means I get off social media soon

That would be a shame. Nobody deserves to be taunted with racism, especially not Jones, who — with the occasional exception — engages fans on Twitter and in real life in a consistently friendly way. He's not perfect, but Major League Baseball needs more guys like Jones on social media, not fewer.

Update: The Giants say, via the San Francisco Chronicle, that they're reviewing surveillance video.

Hopefully, between ballpark security cameras and any live witnesses, the Giants can figure out who threw the banana and ban him from games. He or she should be — and needs to be — embarrassed. And Adam Jones is owed an apology.

Miley knows who Harry is + he twerked for a second at TCAs + He won 'Choice Smile'&'Choice Hottie'

Harry Styles sent Twitter into meltdown on Sunday night after livening up the Teen Choice Awards with a spot of twerking.
The One Direction star was encouraged by the hosts of the ceremony, Lucy Hale and Darren Criss, to take a second in the spotlight.
And given the opportunity to show off his moves, Harry decided to break out the twerk - a dance move which involves moving the hips up and down.

Harry's decision to try his luck twerking clearly came as a shock to his pals, as Ed Sheeran, who Harry was sitting next to, and bandmate Zayn Malik, sitting in the row behind, were seen breaking into fits of laughter upon witnessing the twerk.
Within seconds of Harry's impromptu performance, hundreds of GIFs and videos of the moment had hit Twitter, while #HarryDroppedThatThunThunThun quickly began to trend.
However, Harry was clearly embarrassed that the three-second move had caused such a storm, writing on Twitter later on: 'Note to self, don't 'twerk'.'

Despite Harry causing a Twitter meltdown, it certainly proved a successful night in other ways for One Direction.
While Harry was a solo winner by taking home the Top Hottie and Best Smile gongs, the band also went home with the awards for Choice Summer Tour, Choice Group, Choice Single for Live While We're Young and Choice Love Song for Little Things.
Meanwhile, Rebel Wilson chose to use the band as the butt of one of her more controversial jokes, before adding: 'I like Harry Styles. I met them backstage before I went on and Ed Sheeran, who's not technically part of the band, was there and kind of jamming.
'He's a very nice guy. But probably Harry is my favorite.'
While Harry sat with Ed in the crowd, Zayn sat alongside Little Mix singer girlfriend Perrie Edwards, with the pair dismissing rumours from earlier this week that they had ended their romance.
Instead, the couple looked incredibly happy and loved-up as they sat together hand-in-hand.

Pretty Little Liars cast at the Teen Choice Awards + awards they won!

ABC Family’s teen drama Pretty Little Liars took home several awards during the Teen Choice Awards.

Currently in its fourth season, the cable show walked away with the award Choice TV Show: Drama. Up against broadcast heavyweights Gossip Girl, Nashville, and Revenge, Pretty Little Liars was only one of two cable programs in the category.
With episodes airing in both the summer and regular season, Pretty Little Liars was also nominated for, and won, Choice Summer TV Show.
Teen Choice host Lucy Hale may have been preoccupied announcing guests and winners, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t take a moment to appreciate the fact that she also won the award for Choice Summer TV Star: Female. Portraying Aria Montgomery, Hale shows off her talents as one of the main characters in the long-running series.
Pretty Little Liars’ Janel Parrish also won over fans and received the award for Choice TV Villain for her role of the insidious Mona Vanderwaal.

Prince Friso of the Netherlands has passed away at age 44, a news report announces today, August 12th.
Friso reportedly died of complications that occurred following his brain damage caused by an oxygen deficiency because of his skiing accident on February 17th 2012 in Lech, Austria.
The following report was released:

"After treatment on the intensive care of the Landeskrankenhaus in Innsbruck, the Prince was transferred to the Wellington hospital in his hometown London. Ever since September 2012 Prince Friso showed signs of minimal consciousness. In the beginning of July 2013 he was transferred to his palace in the Netherlands."

"The royal family would like to thank everyone who has taken care of Prince Friso in the past year for their dedication and hard work."

Dutch Prince Johan Friso has died after a year and a half in a coma following an accident at an Austrian ski resort, officials say.

Prince Friso, who was 44, was moved from hospital in London back to the Netherlands last month, but had since suffered complications.

He was hit by an avalanche in February 2012 and buried for 15 minutes.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are said to be on their way home from a holiday in Greece.

"Prince Friso has died of complications related to the hypoxic brain injury, which he suffered as the result of his skiing accident in Lech, Austria on 17 February 2012," a royal palace statement said.

He died on Monday morning in The Hague, the palace added.

The prince's wife, Princess Mabel, is said to have spent her 45th birthday on Sunday at his bedside.
'Massive' brain damage

Shortly before becoming king, his elder brother, Willem-Alexander spoke in April of the "terrible situation" the family had lived with for more than a year.

Prince Friso's wife and Queen Beatrix were doing their best to be there for him every day "to give him a chance", he said.

The prince had been skiing off-piste with friends in Lech when the avalanche struck.

An emergency beeper he was wearing enabled rescuers to find him but medical officials in Innsbruck said it took some time to revive him and he suffered "massive" brain damage. They said he had suffered a heart attack lasting some 50 minutes.

He was later flown to London for treatment at the private Wellington Hospital, which has a specialist neurological unit.

He was eventually discharged in July 2013 but remained in a "state of minimal consciousness".

At the time, officials said he would spend the summer with his family at the royal palace in The Hague, with medical treatment provided by a specialist team.

Drake Explains Frank Ocean’s Absence From 2013 OVO Festival + News On The 2013 OFWGKTA Carnival

Frank Ocean was slated to co-headline Drake’s OVO Festival but pulled out days before the show forcing the cancelling of the first day of festivities. The show still went on with Miguel taking his spot, performances from James Blake and Wale, and the reunion of Diddy and Mase. Revolt TV recently caught up with the “All Me” rapper and got the skinny on why Ocean was a no-show. According to Drake, Ocean became too overwhelmed with his own performances and his recent vocal chord injury to make the Toronto festival. “I know Frank’s been working hard touring everywhere so [his absence is] understandable,” said Drake. “I’ve had my time where I was like, ‘I can’t do these shows.’ It’s just too much, you know. He hit me and was like, ‘Yo, I’m sorry man.’ It’s all good, it’s all love, man. It would have been incredible to have him.”

No love lost. The show still had all kinds of surprises including performances from Kanye West, French Montana, TLC, A$AP Rocky and Lil Wayne. Check out the entire clip below.

The second annual OFWGKTA Carnival presented by Camp Flog Gnaw returns with Wolf Gang honcho Tyler, the Creator and fellow Odd Future patron Frank Ocean at the top of the bill. The rest of the line-up will roll out at a later date, but expect the usual Odd Future crew to show up and cause a ruckus. The 2013 installment will take place Nov. 9 in downtown LA at The Park at LA Coliseum.

The ode-to-Odd Future fest expands in 2013 to two stages -- the "Camp" stage and the "High" stage -- and a skatepark. Expect the usual amusement park rides and games.
Early bird general admission tickets are going for $50 a pop on Campfloggnaw.com. They jump to $65 after Aug. 11, and Tyler suggest you purchase via computer.

If you have a cool $200 in your wallet, opt for the the Flog Gnaw package, which includes "early admission to the carnival with unlimited rides, a carnival themed Odd Future back pack, t-shirt, commemorative lanyard, game tickets, special viewing area, artist meet n greet, raffle of Odd Future prizes with a chance to watch the show from the stage, and more." Bet Justin Bieber already got his.

Is J.Lo Simon Cowell's secret messenger?

0
0

Music mogul Simon Cowell is reportedly taking Jennifer Lopez's help to communicate with socialite Lauren Silverman, who is expecting his baby.

Cowell has gone incognito after the news surfaced about his relationship with Lauren, who is still married to businessman Andrew Silverman.

"She and Lauren have met at least twice. There have been quite a few phone calls between the two," Sunday Express newspaper quoted a source as saying.

"Lauren has come to regard Jen as her only lifeline to Simon. The arrangement has taken a lot of stress out of her situation. Jen has assured her Simon would never, ever leave her and their unborn child out to hang," a source added.

Lopez sympathises with Lauren's situation.

"While Jen isn't altogether comfortable playing sob sister, she's come to understand how worried Lauren is and let her know she will continue to be there for her," a source said.

No disrespect to Big Sean or Jay Electronica, but their new collaboration, “No I.D. Freestyle” essentially begins and ends with a verse of the year candidate performance from Kendrick Lamar.

On the song, K Dot names drops Wale, Big KRIT, Drake, Meek Mill, Jay Electronica, Tyler the Creator, Mac Miller, J. Cole, A$AP Rocky and Pusha T when playfully threatening to “make sure your core fans never heard of you n*ggas.”
This song was left off of Big Sean’s upcoming Hall of Fame album due to “sample clearances”.

JESSE MCCARTNEY DROPS NEW SINGLE "BACK TOGETHER"

Elysium star Sharlto Copley says Angelina Jolie is the "perfect" Maleficent

0
0

The South African star of Elysium, Sharlto Copley, says Angelina Jolie is "perfect" in the role of an evil Queen in Disney's Maleficent.

Talking to Sydney Confidential on the red carpet at Elysium's Australian premiere, Copley said Jolie will surprise audiences with her performance in the fairytale blockbuster.

"I think the role of Maleficent is so perfectly suited to her," he said.

"She has this incredible range that people forget because she has become such an icon in our society with her visual look."

"Angie's playing a character that has these multifaceted layers, that can be very hard and very steely on the outside, but with a real heart underneath.

"I think it's going to be a very interesting performance from her."

Copley said he felt "very privileged" working with her on what he describes as a "really huge film".

It's the latest in a growing number of blockbusters Copley has starred in after his breakout performance in District 9 (directed by Elysium's Neil Blomkamp).

From making up one fourth of The A-Team to taking on Matt Damon as a futuristic villain in Elysium, the character actor is keeping his parts varied.

As well as Maleficent, Copley is appearing in Spike Lee's remake of action classic Oldboy and in Blomkamp's third film Chappie.

Jolie will be in Australia next month as she directs her second film - Unbroken - in Sydney and on the Gold Coast.

Proof the Voice Never Left! 10 Live Mariah Carey Flawree™ Performances within the Last Year

0
0
So Mariah Carey's 2013 year has been interesting. From a terribly lip-synced BET performance, to the infamous voice split during her GMA Performance of #Beautiful stans of under-talented heathens, Arianators and little monsters have been trying to rip into Mariah Carey, accusing her of not being able to sing live anymore.

Is this true? No. Simply not. A previous post, in vain, attempted to prove that she could still sing by using 10 year old performances, but, we all know the fantastic Messiah can still take even Jesus to the roman-catholic church when she gives her all. Thus, without further ado, let's go and review the evidence that her vocal chops are still there and that the pasture of lambs have been greener than how they were in like, 1999 or something.

1. Hero, 7/4/2013

Lowering the key a little bit for her to sing the song fully, Mariah was #triumphant as she ripped through accusations of losing her voice from the BETgate fall out. However, she performed the song with the original key (just toyed with the notes a bit) for Monaco's performance and Morocco's performance, both of which were pretty good and, for the former, 100% live.

Notes to look out for: Belted D5s that briefly reach E5. She also hits an Eb3 in her Gold Coast rendition.

2. Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme), Monaco. 6/2/2012

Performing this song 100% live for the first time ever, Mariah Carey keeps it poised and cool until the climax, where she straight up belts the entire thing out. Of course, she played with the song a bit so it's not as vocally demanding as the studio version, but she does come out guns ablazing with this fantastic rendition.

Notes to look out for: The whole damn climax is filled with C5-C#5s. The "SHINES BRIGHTLYYYYYYEEEEYYYYY" is a D5.

3. #Beautiful, 7/4/2013

After the BET and GMA fiasco, it seemed like Mariah would never be able to actually do this song justice (and her fear/being forced to sit because of Tiny Yet Strong Flying Legs Miguel probably did not help matters). Luckily, fireworks happened on 4th of July as Mariah performed this song in earnest and slayedT it.

Notes to look out for: No super high belts or anything, but she raised the key on the whistles which ranged from E6 to A6 and peaked at C#7.

4. We Belong Together, GMA Performance 2013

GMA might have been overshadowed by that.... whatever that was, but she definitely showed off her belting prowess at early morning in the cold, which should knock any singer on their ass completely. Mariah hung in there enough to perform a new climax of WBT which, to my ear, sounds live. She has much better pre-recorded endings for this song (and she has no shame in using them for 10+ years!)

Notes to look out for: E5 at "We Belong Together Baby!", then standard C5s across the board. She also performed the climax fully at American Idol's finale and she sung it a year earlier in Morocco, the liveness of it is dubious but, at the very least, she used a different prerecorded "live" vocal that hits an F5s. Bless ha for giving the lambs what they want: extravagant endings that we later use to judge her other performances. She also mighta sung it live at the Gold Coast earlier. Fitriah does not pant that easily!

5. Any I'll Be There performance

It's kinda a cop out but I'll be damned if it isn't true! Mariah Carey has SLAYED this song under any condition. She belts multiple E5s during her Morocco and Monaco performances and continued to SLAY at the Gold Coast.

Notes to look out for: Every belt is above a C5, so that's unimportant but she does dip into Eb3/E3 for her lower register. A fantastic A5 in Head Voice. Also, at the Gold Coast, she hits an E6 in her whistle register before chirping it up to a C#7. Damn girl!

6. Dreamlover (Some sort of 1994 skittering Synth Remix) at Morroco

Mariah took the stage to perform this usually optional hit. She handled it with all the grace her raspy voice could do. Still, she managed to pull it off despite her voice not being the most pristine (on the other hand, you can clearly tell what was live!).

Notes to look out for: That beautiful, live C7 in the beginning. When will ur faves eva??? Also, she hits a B5 and A5 in head voice, showing that it's not going to waste. Her belts briefly peak at D5.

7. Don't Forget About Us in Australia

Performing the supposedly unforgettable Don't Forget About Us (as reputed on the Platinum Edition of The Emancipation of Mimi), Mariah remembered about the song's existence and decided to sing it. She performed it flawlessly and with minor lipping.

Notes to look out for: The lower range Bb2, exactly like the recording! Her whistle register hits with F6-G6. Her belts have some slight lipping but she does hit an extended Bb4, you can tell by that out of breath growl she hits out at the last second. Her other performance is is more consistent with whistles but a little shaky on the belts

8. All I Want for Christmas Is You on Jimmy Kimmel!

Anyone who thinks Mariah is a voiceless granny needs to have several with this song. In the original key, Mariah sings along accompanied by a little kid choir (the adorable girl on the far left is superior to everything your fav will try in their career.), the roots using standard little kid instruments and ....Jimmy Kimmel existing or something. The video became memetic and reminded us that late night talk shows exist.

Notes to look out for: Flawless E5 belts. G5s and A5s in head voice which are powerful and breezy enough to make your favs look awful. She did something similar at the Rockerfeller Center in a clearly peppermint inspired ensemble. Also, of note, Mariah proposes Santa Claus and her go to the ghetto after the performance! Santa Claus proudly accepts.

9. That Jazz Performance, sometime in September 2012

After having a lackluster Triumphant performance (the only memorable parts were the whistles, peaking at her standard C7), Messiah Carey graced us at Belhman's Bar where she sung her heart out. Probably on that bubbly, she slayed the world multiple times over to the extent where she collected enough dragon balls to promptly revive us and set the world back to normal. Thank you, Mimi.

Notes to look out for: A gorgeous C3 for her lowest note. And a D5-E5 belted note. Classic vocal impromptu arrangements and she showed off her musicality with her love for Jazz! Sometimes it's not all about the notes!

10. American Idol Performance(s)
I know what some of you are thinking. "She lipped this performance! How does it count?!" Well, she didn't. American Idol is just shady af and didn't sync up the audio and video. She actually performed 3 separate takes, each of them very distinct and chose the best ones to be spliced together! I included one of the takes that just laid her performance over the video because I know some of you hate looking at black screens.

The other two takes can be found (albeit there's only half of the second take) here and here

Notes to look out for: Oh, god, where to begin. First of all, the above Vision of Love take hits a belted F5. One of Make It Happen's peaks at F#5, and all of the extended notes are E5, some of which are at the best of her career's. My All, in the second and third take climbs and scales an E5 like drunk batman rock climbing. Hero hits an E5, but it had the strength to carry on to F5/F#5 depending on the take. WBT hits an E5 as well. Then we have a heavily dubbed, and slightly irrelevant #Beautiful, but she hits E6-F6 in the whistle register. Also, of note, the third take contains snippets of Breakdown, as Mariah performed songs like Underneath the Stars, Can't Let Go, Heartbreaker, Breakdown and the Roof in between the sets to satisfy her unusually carnivore leaning lambs.

What are your favorite Mariah Carey performances from the past year? Of all time? Mariah Party post y/y/y? Also, of note, her vocal range, as of this past year, is Bb2 -> D7. I could have used Mariah's Theme (remix), Always be my baby, It's like that and Emotions performances but, you know, trying to keep it to ten!

Sources for the videos are the videos themselves. The terribly rambling writing was written by syntheses, hence the ONTD Original!
