Rita Ora Releases LGBTQ+ Anthem "Proud"

On Thursday, Rita Ora unveiled her latest song "Proud" in conjunction with Absolut's Open Mic Project. The new project by Ora and Absolut taps into the fanbase she’s amassed over her career and looks to “unite the voices of change-makers and fearless fans” by advocating open conversation through stories of acceptance.

The singer sat down with Out Magazine to tell them why her LGBTQ+ fanbase is everything to her and why "Proud is the anthem they need.

Q: “Proud” is an LGBTQ anthem. What’s been your most memorable experience with the LGBTQ community in your career?

Rita: It’s always been such a close relationship with me. My whole life has been very weird in a lot of places and people thought I was a crazy person and would look at how I dressed and think I was crazy—all that type of stuff. The only people who didn’t think that was the LGBTQ community. Since even before I became a public figure. I’ve always felt like I owe a lot to the community because I’ve always had a family there. It’s helped me to become the person I am today.

Q: What do you want people to take away from this song? What’s the message you want to convey?

Rita: I just want to encourage more acceptance in today’s world. It’s such a positive thing to do—now more than ever we really need it. Two or three years ago, I wasn’t sure if I would ever put out the music that I want and to be me and be free. Now, in 2018, I feel like that. In 2016, I thought there was no fucking way I’d be able to do what I want. How times change, right?

Halsey's powerful poem about her experiences with abuse at the Women's March on NYC

I was at the Women's March on NYC. During the pre-march speeches, they announced that the next speaker would be Halsey. "Oh, I know about her from ONTD," I thought, and didn't expect much. She got up on stage, started fumbling around on her phone and speaking rather nonchalantly, so I was expecting even less. Then she started reading her poem, "A Story Like Mine"… After she was done, a woman next to me exclaimed, "wow, that was really powerful," which seemed to sum up the reaction of everyone present. I heard a lot of great speeches today, but hers left the deepest impression.

Carey Mulligan: "If Dee Rees was a white man, she'd be directing the next Star Wars"

Carey Mulligan was at Sundance for the film Wildlife and had this to say about her Mudbound director while at Variety's Sundance studio: "If Dee was -- I said this last year at Sundance, I think -- if Dee was a white man she'd be directing the next Star Wars. She'd be nominated for an Oscar. Without question! And I think... you know. There's something not right, and we're working on it. But I do think...I think Greta and Patty Jenkins have been overlooked for too long. If it doesn’t happen it will send out a big signal and I think people will react to that."

Dawson's Creek Turns 20: The 10 Most Gut-Wrenching Episodes

$
0
0

The Dawson's Creek pilot turns 20 today (WTF)! I wrote this and thought I'd submit it for you guys since a few of you requested I do that. :o)

1. Season 1, Episode 12: "Beauty Contest"

While many fans remember the episode where Joey enters the Miss Windjammer pageant in the hopes of winning $5,000 toward her college tuition for her rendition of "Own My Own" from Les Misérables or Pacey’s outlandish monologue in the style of William Wallace as the only male contestant, there was a lot more going on.

"Beauty Contest" is the first time Dawson Leery sees — truly sees — his lifelong best friend as something more. Jen instantly picks up on this backstage as they watch Joey perform, and Dawson grasps it even harder afterward when he and Joey have yet another conversation about how their feelings are changing. It’s no surprise their first (real — the staged one in "Detention" doesn’t count) kiss was only one episode away.

Standout Quote: "It's just makeup — and hairspray — and tomorrow I'll be back to being Joey. Just Joey. The too-tall girl that lives on the wrong side of the creek." — Joey Potter

2. Season 2, Episodes 14 and 15: "To Be or Not to Be"/"…That Is the Question"

This two-parter revolved around Jack McPhee — who is new to Capeside, alongside his sister Andie — coming to terms with the fact that he is gay and being forced by the actual worst teacher in the history of teaching to read a poem out loud that he is not ready to read.

If the close-to-tears tone in Jack's voice and Mr. Peterson forcing him to continue reading weren't enough to get waterworks going, the moment Pacey spits in the latter’s face was (secondary to the cheers, of course).

The second part sees an extremely emotional Jack pleading with his estranged father (played by the late David Dukes) to face the situation head-on, and the acting by Kerr Smith during this heated exchange still has many fans wondering why he doesn't have an Emmy on his home mantel.

Luckily, Jack has a huge amount of support from his sister, friends and Jen's Grams. And he and his dad do work it out — but not for a season and a half.

Standout Quote: "If Jack is gay, he doesn't need your judgment, young man. The Lord above will be the one to judge him, as he will judge all of us." — Evelyn "Grams" Ryan

3. Season 3, Episode 20: "The Longest Day"

Season 3 remains one of if not the strongest season of Dawson’s Creek in that it represented the true climax of the series. Boiled down to one episode, that climax is "The Longest Day," when Joey and Pacey finally work up the (admittedly hesitant) courage to tell Dawson they have romantic feelings for each other. It’s told from three different points of view, which also makes it a pretty unique episode, emotional impact aside.

As one would expect, Dawson reacts very poorly, even though he was the one who asked Pacey to keep an eye out for Joey after Dawson himself rejected her. But that’s textbook Dawson — and it doesn’t change the fact that anyone who has been on the receiving end of betrayal not only from their best friend but also their assumed romantic soulmate knew what the poor guy was feeling, lash-outs and all. And it sucked.

Standout Quote: "Ever had one of those days you wish you could live all over again?" — Joey Potter (voice-over)

4. Season 4, Episode 20: "Promicide"

Pacey spends two entire seasons making everyone fall in love with him as Joey does (remember when he watched her sleep, and as a teenager that wasn’t at all creepy but now sort of is?), then promptly smashes that visage with a temper tantrum at the gang’s prom that ends with him dumping Joey in front of the entire senior class.

And it's not because Joey is upset that he messed up the flowers and the limo or other items on the laundry list of things he thinks he has to do to make Joey happy. It's because deep down, Pacey thinks he isn't good enough for her, and she's going off to college to become something great while he's stuck in Capeside with his insecurities.

For those who had been rooting for this couple from the beginning, it was a rough 44 minutes. Luckily, the writers put Joey and Pacey together in the end, and for that they deserve the world.

Standout Quote: "You break my heart into a thousand pieces, and you say it’s because I deserve better?" — Joey Potter

Will.I.Am Calls Out Sexism in Music Industry

$

“Music is probably… it does a really good job at diminishing the power of a woman. And that’s really sad. Especially hip-hop, rock — sex, drugs, and rock and roll. A woman is a resource in that sentence. It’s sad.”

“If that song 'that lady' had to come out today, it’d be like, ‘Who that bitch?'”

“It’s sad that, in this day and age of music, we don’t have a huge support for activism like we used to. In the ’60s, everybody was trying to make a statement with their music. It seems more athletes are standing up for causes than actually in the music industry.”

"The Time’s Up movement should have happened a long time ago.”

“A man doesn’t have the power to empower a woman. All a man can do is acknowledge the power of a woman. I don’t have the power to give a woman, when a woman gave power to me. So our society is all effed up.”

twilight-brooding-edward-cullen

2. Edward Cullen from Twilight

About: Edward Cullen (born Edward Anthony Masen, Jr., on June 20, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois) is a telepathic vampire and a founding member of the Olympic coven, as well as a protagonist of the Twilight Saga.

He is the husband of Bella Swan and the father of Renesmee Cullen. Edward is the adoptive son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, as well as the son-in-law of Charlie Swan and Renée Dwyer. He is the adoptive brother of Emmett and Alice Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale.

After nearly dying from the Spanish influenza in 1918 in Chicago, Edward was turned into a vampire by Carlisle, as the only alternative to death. Over the next ninety years, the pair gathered a family of vampires around themselves and called themselves "vegetarians".

Problematic: Is like 1000 years old man who is crushing on a teenager. Get someone your own age Edward! + he watch her when she sleeps..creep.

5. Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls

About: Lucas "Luke" Danes, played by Scott Patterson, is the owner of "Luke's Diner" in Stars Hollow. His mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise Luke and his sister, Liz. In season two, Luke reveals Liz left the town at the earliest opportunity and is a constant source of trouble to him, not least with her numerous ill-fated relationships and failed careers. By contrast, Luke is dependable, hard-working and somewhat of a traditionalist. After his father's death, Luke converted the family hardware store to the diner, having worked there in his youth. He keeps most of the original architecture intact as a way of honoring his father, with whom it is implied he was close.

Problematic: homophobic baby man, slut-shames Lori + gets mad when she dates other men. He gets mad when no one in town wants to mourn the death of his sexual predator of an uncle, mostly because he really, really identifies with him. (note: never seen this show myself so if this is wrong don't blame me blame buzzfeed)

Tate Langdon from American Horror Story

10. Tate Langdon from American Horror Story

About: Tate was born in 1977 to Constance Langdon and Hugo Langdon. Tate was the brother of Adelaide, Beauregard, and possibly one other unidentified albino sibling. Though he alone of the Langdon children has escaped visible physical defect, he is very mentally disturbed, perhaps owing in some part to his absentee father and neglectful mother. Tate reached his mental breaking point in 1994 when he committed a mass shooting at Westfield High, taking the lives of 15 students.

Following the shooting, Tate returned home and was killed by a SWAT team in his bedroom.

Problematic: Killed 2 (gay) men, manipulate Violet so he won't be so lonely and rapes Violets mother Vivien + killed 15 students in a school shooting.

16. Bender from The Breakfast Club

About: John Bender is one of the main characters in the The Breakfast Club, serving as the anti-hero. Keeping with the film's theme of acceptance of oneself and of others, Bender learns that being kind isn't necessarily a bad thing yet he comes off as the tough guy who couldn't care less, and no one really knows him at all. However he shows a significant change by the end. Initially he shows no respect towards anyone; especially the teachers and the school property.

Problematic: He spends most of the movie repeatedly sexually harassing Claire, almost to the point of assault when he puts his face between her legs without her knowledge or consent.

21. And literally all the male characters from The Big Bang Theory

About: Leonard Hofstadter: An experimental physicist with an IQ of 173, who received his PhD when he was 24 years old. Leonard is a nerd who loves video games, comic books, and Dungeons & Dragons.

Sheldon Cooper: Originally from Galveston, Texas, Sheldon was a child prodigy with an eidetic memory who began college at the age of eleven, and earned a PhD at age sixteen. He is a theoretical physicist researching quantum mechanics and string theory.

Howard Wolowitz: An aerospace engineer. Howard is Jewish and lives with his mother, Debbie. Unlike Sheldon, Raj and Leonard, Howard does not hold a doctorate. He goes into space, training as an astronaut and serving as a payload specialist.

Raj Koothrappali: A particle astrophysicist originally from New Delhi, India. Raj is initially unable to talk to women unless he drinks alcohol. Raj also has very feminine tastes and often takes on a stereotypical female role. Raj also has a Yorkshire Terrier named Cinnamon.

Problematic: All of them are misogynists. They see women as trophies or challenges they have to conquer. + tons of other shitty stuff.

“You can see it right in front of your eyes. I don’t even have to say anything. Can you get away with doing something like that to another human being? And the answer is yes, cause he’s working. What else can I say?”

“I have to say I was victimized but I’ve made the choice to not become a victim. And that’s the thing: I did everything I’m supposed to do, with the police, the law enforcement. Catherine Zeta-Jones defends playing a Latina character in Cocaine Godmother

Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Colombian drug lord in the new Lifetime movie Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story.
The Welsh actress addressed criticism over the role’s whitewashing.

“This is just the way I see it, and people can take what they want from it: I am a Welsh actress, who doesn’t happen to look like what you think someone from Wales would look like. I have my own language; I speak Welsh. And so, for me to wait for a role that is fit for the way I look physically, that is not a Welsh role, where I don’t use my accent—I never use my accent. Have you ever heard me use my accent that I’m speaking with right now?”

"This happens to be the third Hispanic I’ve played. I played the lead in Zorro, and I screen-tested with six Hispanic women, and I got the role. I don’t know what to say. And I was a complete unknown at this point; it wasn’t because I had a name or box-office value. Four of the actresses are my contemporaries to this day. I played a woman of Spanish descent in Traffic as well. I have to take the roles I believe I can embody. I can’t be the person to fight against a very big issue, and I won’t take on that role. There have been so many actors who have played ‘against type.’ That’s sort of what we do.”

"I’m all for diversity, and diversity across the board. Not just color, race, sex — everything. I want to see more diversity behind the camera. This is a white man’s business, and now, hard to believe after all of these years, we’re finally trying to break that glass ceiling.”
