Carey Mulligan: "If Dee Rees was a white man, she'd be directing the next Star Wars"

Carey Mulligan was at Sundance for the film Wildlife and had this to say about her Mudbound director while at Variety's Sundance studio: "If Dee was -- I said this last year at Sundance, I think -- if Dee was a white man she'd be directing the next Star Wars. She'd be nominated for an Oscar. Without question! And I think... you know. There's something not right, and we're working on it. But I do think...I think Greta and Patty Jenkins have been overlooked for too long. If it doesn’t happen it will send out a big signal and I think people will react to that."

Dawson's Creek Turns 20: The 10 Most Gut-Wrenching Episodes

$
0
0

The Dawson's Creek pilot turns 20 today (WTF)! I wrote this and thought I'd submit it for you guys since a few of you requested I do that. :o)

1. Season 1, Episode 12: "Beauty Contest"

While many fans remember the episode where Joey enters the Miss Windjammer pageant in the hopes of winning $5,000 toward her college tuition for her rendition of "Own My Own" from Les Misérables or Pacey’s outlandish monologue in the style of William Wallace as the only male contestant, there was a lot more going on.

"Beauty Contest" is the first time Dawson Leery sees — truly sees — his lifelong best friend as something more. Jen instantly picks up on this backstage as they watch Joey perform, and Dawson grasps it even harder afterward when he and Joey have yet another conversation about how their feelings are changing. It’s no surprise their first (real — the staged one in "Detention" doesn’t count) kiss was only one episode away.

Standout Quote: "It's just makeup — and hairspray — and tomorrow I'll be back to being Joey. Just Joey. The too-tall girl that lives on the wrong side of the creek." — Joey Potter

2. Season 2, Episodes 14 and 15: "To Be or Not to Be"/"…That Is the Question"

This two-parter revolved around Jack McPhee — who is new to Capeside, alongside his sister Andie — coming to terms with the fact that he is gay and being forced by the actual worst teacher in the history of teaching to read a poem out loud that he is not ready to read.

If the close-to-tears tone in Jack's voice and Mr. Peterson forcing him to continue reading weren't enough to get waterworks going, the moment Pacey spits in the latter’s face was (secondary to the cheers, of course).

The second part sees an extremely emotional Jack pleading with his estranged father (played by the late David Dukes) to face the situation head-on, and the acting by Kerr Smith during this heated exchange still has many fans wondering why he doesn't have an Emmy on his home mantel.

Luckily, Jack has a huge amount of support from his sister, friends and Jen's Grams. And he and his dad do work it out — but not for a season and a half.

Standout Quote: "If Jack is gay, he doesn't need your judgment, young man. The Lord above will be the one to judge him, as he will judge all of us." — Evelyn "Grams" Ryan

3. Season 3, Episode 20: "The Longest Day"

Season 3 remains one of if not the strongest season of Dawson’s Creek in that it represented the true climax of the series. Boiled down to one episode, that climax is "The Longest Day," when Joey and Pacey finally work up the (admittedly hesitant) courage to tell Dawson they have romantic feelings for each other. It’s told from three different points of view, which also makes it a pretty unique episode, emotional impact aside.

As one would expect, Dawson reacts very poorly, even though he was the one who asked Pacey to keep an eye out for Joey after Dawson himself rejected her. But that’s textbook Dawson — and it doesn’t change the fact that anyone who has been on the receiving end of betrayal not only from their best friend but also their assumed romantic soulmate knew what the poor guy was feeling, lash-outs and all. And it sucked.

Standout Quote: "Ever had one of those days you wish you could live all over again?" — Joey Potter (voice-over)

4. Season 4, Episode 20: "Promicide"

Pacey spends two entire seasons making everyone fall in love with him as Joey does (remember when he watched her sleep, and as a teenager that wasn’t at all creepy but now sort of is?), then promptly smashes that visage with a temper tantrum at the gang’s prom that ends with him dumping Joey in front of the entire senior class.

And it's not because Joey is upset that he messed up the flowers and the limo or other items on the laundry list of things he thinks he has to do to make Joey happy. It's because deep down, Pacey thinks he isn't good enough for her, and she's going off to college to become something great while he's stuck in Capeside with his insecurities.

For those who had been rooting for this couple from the beginning, it was a rough 44 minutes. Luckily, the writers put Joey and Pacey together in the end, and for that they deserve the world.

Standout Quote: "You break my heart into a thousand pieces, and you say it’s because I deserve better?" — Joey Potter

Jordyn Wieber confronts Larry Nassar in court

Jordyn Wieber is the 2011 World All Around Champion and a member of the Fierce Five that won the team gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She is now the 4th member of the Fierce Five to publicly come out as one of Nassar's survivors after McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, and Gabby Douglas. She says that Nassar treated her from age 8 to 18 and started sexually abusing her when she was 14 after she tore a hamstring in her right leg. She says that her right shin was injured in London and she now questions if Nassar was even properly treating it or if he was just focusing on who he was going to prey on next. She says that she talked about how uncomfortable his treatments felt with McKayla and Aly, but didn't know it was abuse. She also says that Nassar brought the girls coffee and food in London when they were too afraid to eat in front of their coaches to make it seem like he was their friend.

Jordyn's coach was John Geddert, who is now being accused of being physically and mentally abusive. Geddert is also being accused of enabling Larry Nassar since he received a complaint about Nassar back in 1998 and let Nassar continue working at Twistars after he "retired" from USAG in 2015 after Maggie Nichols reported him. Jordyn stopped training in elite gymnastics in 2013 after Geddert was investiagted by the police for physically assaulting someone and went to UCLA to become a studen coach for their gymnastics team since she can't compete since she went pro. She has graduated but is still the UCLA floor coach now. Geddert didn't go to jail and instead only did 2 months of counseling and isn't on the USAG banned list. Jordyn didn't say anything about Geddert in her statement, but other people who have testified like Lindsey Lemke and Bayle Pickel said that Geddert threw ice at them, pushed them off the beam and bars, made them compete on injuries, and made treatment from Nassar mandatory (he wouldn't accept doctor notes from anyone else). This abusive environment led them to thinking Nassar was their friend/"the good guy" and allowed him to groom them. An anonymous survivor of Nassar said "I remember [Nassar] doing treatment on me ...... with a towel over my butt, and John Geddert walking in making a joke that I guess my back really did hurt."

On her ~buddy, says: "We still FaceTime almost every day. When you work with someone, you sometimes think, ‘Maybe it will just be for this time, and we say we're going to keep in touch but we won't.' But we really … I'm like, ‘Hey, dickhead, what are you getting me for Christmas?'"

She continued, talking about a special moment they shared while recording: "When I came to New York, we had only written together maybe a couple of times, and we were very obsessed with each other on a creative level and as buds. I was sort of doing nothing in New York, and we did this thing where for five days in a row we just kept having dinner every night, just getting to know each other. One night, somehow it came up that I hadn't had Cap'n Crunch or Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Lucky Charms. He was like, "We have to do this." So we went to a bodega, got all of these cereals and went back to his house in Brooklyn and did a little lineup of bowls. We tried, like, 20 different kinds of cereal. [Laughs.] I still think about Cinnamon Toast Crunch all the time."

Celebs React to Impending US Government Shutdown

-It looks like the US federal government is going to shutdown at midnight tonight. Unless Congress and Tramp get their shithole together in a couple hours, 850K government workers could be shut out of their offices come Monday and will be furloughed.

-The GOP is holding CHIP funding hostage (which they let expire in Sept 2017 as a bargaining chip w/ Democrats btw) to try and get their way. Funding for the program is set the run out in several states.

-Trump previously rejected a bipartisan deal that funded CHIP, fixed DACA and gave some money for the border wall. The GOP does not know what the White House wants at the moment.

-Need 60 votes in the Senate

EDIT: The Government has shut down! hide ya kids, hide ya wife.

Matthew Lewis comments on Johnny Depp's casting in Fantastic Beasts

In general:

"It's absolutely right that you're asking this question because I do believe that people who do have a platform and have a voice should [speak to] these issues," Lewis explained. "But I also have to be truthful and say that I don't know anything about this."

His opinion on what Daniel Radcliffe said about Johnny Depp being cast:

"I read the headline with Dan; I didn't read the body of the article," Lewis continued. "One of my personal pet peeves is people who have such vivid opinions on things that they actually don't understand or don't know anything about. And, I'll actually admit to my ignorance, which is my own fault. I should probably address that."

Wants to educate himself more about the issue:

"I will go away and learn [about the issue]," he assured. "I promise I will. I just don't know right now and I would find it irresponsible to offer an opinion on something I don't know about. It's not fair. But, I think it's a powerful question you should keep asking. I really do. People should speak up for things that other people can't speak up for."

I get the feeling that he's closer to JKR than Dan is which is why he basically said nothing. Emma is bound to get asked about this soon now right?

Rita Ora Releases LGBTQ+ Anthem "Proud"

$

On Thursday, Rita Ora unveiled her latest song "Proud" in conjunction with Absolut's Open Mic Project. The new project by Ora and Absolut taps into the fanbase she’s amassed over her career and looks to “unite the voices of change-makers and fearless fans” by advocating open conversation through stories of acceptance.

The singer sat down with Out Magazine to tell them why her LGBTQ+ fanbase is everything to her and why "Proud is the anthem they need.

Q: “Proud” is an LGBTQ anthem. What’s been your most memorable experience with the LGBTQ community in your career?

Rita: It’s always been such a close relationship with me. My whole life has been very weird in a lot of places and people thought I was a crazy person and would look at how I dressed and think I was crazy—all that type of stuff. The only people who didn’t think that was the LGBTQ community. Since even before I became a public figure. I’ve always felt like I owe a lot to the community because I’ve always had a family there. It’s helped me to become the person I am today.

Q: What do you want people to take away from this song? What’s the message you want to convey?

Rita: I just want to encourage more acceptance in today’s world. It’s such a positive thing to do—now more than ever we really need it. Two or three years ago, I wasn’t sure if I would ever put out the music that I want and to be me and be free. Now, in 2018, I feel like that. In 2016, I thought there was no fucking way I’d be able to do what I want. How times change, right?
