ONTD Original: How Carly Rae Jepsen Inspired Taylor Swift

$

Both singers have been slammed for making "kiddie pop," looking eternally 14, and their inability to sing and dance. It's a shame that their fanbases don't get along. They're looking a lot alike lately with their blunt bangs, curly blonde hair, and sudden interest in fashion. Here's how Carly Rae Jepsen inspired Taylor Swift to cross over into mainstream pop.

Case A: E•MO•TION Vs. 1989

Carly Rae Jepsen started working on Emotion in 2013. She desperately wanted to break away from "Call Me Maybe. She was clearly inspired by 80s artists such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. She began working with a plethora of mainstream and indie collaborators such as Sia, Dev Hynes, Stargate, Benny Blanco, and Max Martin, who also worked with Swift on 1989. Carly almost worked with Shellback (who's credited on Taylor's Reputation - HMMM!) but that fell through.

In this video, Carly explains how the 80s inspired both Emotion.

"I've always been attracted to the 80s. I think you can even hear that on Kiss. I showed the beginning demos of my work to my publisher and he's like, 'You're making an 80s album,' and I was like, 'Oh yeah.' He said, 'We gotta send you to the UK and maybe even Sweden to work with people who were part of that era when it first began and see if you jive with them,' and it was the best decision. I felt like my album went up a step."

Taylor Swift started to work on 1989 in 2012 after Red didn't win AOTY at the Grammys. She didn't know what she wanted to release, but she wanted an album that was different from its predecessor. She finally had a new sound in mind around 2013. She listened to a lot of pop music from the late 80s as a source of inspiration. She didn't name any artists in particular, but she loved the risks they were taking at that time. Her personal style wasn't very 80s-inspired except for wearing a flock of seagulls on a sweatshirt. Unlike Carly, Taylor wanted to work with less people on this album because she wanted a cohesive album.

"This is a much smaller group of people I worked with on 1989. I did that because I wanted this album to be more sonically cohesive than Red was. I was very proud of Red for a lot of reasons. One of the things that I wanted to work on for this new album was that I wanted it to have its own sound that was not all over the place. The sonic inspiration for this album really kind of harkens back to the sounds of late 80s pop. I loved how they would be so experimental. They would take so many risks. You look at that time in pop music and in pop culture and in fashion. Everyone seems to be kind of bucking the system. Everybody kind of was like, 'Well, we'll wear neon. You gotta say we can't? We're gonna act how we want, love who we want, be who we want, say what we want,' and so I was very inspired by this album to have flickers of 80s synth-pop in there. And that's because I loved how people were living their lives."

Case B: Working with Jack Antonoff

Lorde isn't the only pop girl who's crazy about Jack Antonoff. Carly and Taylor both love working with him on their music. Back in March 2017, Carly revealed that she was working with him on her upcoming album, allegedly titled 99 Cent Dreams. She posted about him several times on her Instagram without blurring the lines between professional and personal like a certain someone .....

The two previously worked on Carly's Emotion album, but Antonoff's tracks didn't make the cut. She provide vocals for The Bleachers' song "Shadow," off their album Strange Desire. Carly said her next album is "disco-inspired" and we're still waiting!

Jack also worked with Taylor on her new album, Reputation. He's credited on the tracks "Look What You Made Me Do,""Getaway Car,""Dress,""This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things,""Call It What You Want," and "New Year's Day."

Case C: Delicate Vs Favourite Colour

The first few seconds of Delicate sound similar to Favourite Colour. Both songs also have an 80s vibe to them. Delicate is a song that wonders if a relationship is moving too fast. Favourite Colour also talks about falling hard and fast for someone.

Case D: Rainbow Sequin Dress, Short Curly Hair, Blunt Bangs

As stated before, the singers are rocking similar looks lately. Carly's been growing her hair out, and so has Taylor. Both have been rocking shaggy hair with bangs that has their fans wanting their old hairstyles back. Taylor has been wearing this rainbow sequin dress a lot, as evidenced in her Reputation magazines and in her new music video for "End Game." The dress is by Ashish and retails for $2,000 and is currently sold out.

Carly rocked a similar look on Instagram. The photo appears to be from a professional photo shoot. Carly's dress is from Amen and retails for $1,386.00 and is also sold out. Who's inspired by who? Some would say that Taylor got the rainbow idea from Carly's Emotion album cover.

The rainbow sweater is from Valentino and is currently sold out. Carly's impact!

Rapper Vic Mensa Writes Op-ed On His Trip To Palestine

Chicago rapper Vic Mensa has penned an op-ed for Time, entitled “What Palestine Taught Me About American Racism.” In the essay, he reflects on his recent visit to Palestine and what he witnessed while there.

Mensa notes the experiences he has had as a black man growing up in Chicago's South side parallel the daily lives of Palestinians. “The parallels between the black American experience and the Palestinian experience are overwhelming.”

He draws many similarities between Palestine and Chicago’s South side, the lack of clean water in Flint, Michigan, and the tragic story of Kalief Browder.

A quote from his piece: "An elderly man with a face of leather spoke to us in Arabic saying, “Now that you have seen with your own eyes, return home and explain what you saw. Place pressure on the U.S. government to place pressure on Israel. Herein lies the purpose of this composition. I write to inform all those who will hear me of the treacherous denial of human rights to the Palestinian people living under occupation. These scenes of oppression and abuse will be forever etched into my memory, burned into my mind’s eye."

Photographer Mario Testino accused of sexual harassment by 13 men.

- If you wanted to work with Mario, you needed to do a nude shoot at the Chateau Marmont. All the agents knew that this was the thing to excel or advance your career.” said Jason Fedele, who appeared in those campaigns.
- Another model said that Testino harassed him during a nude shoot for Gucci. “Mario said: I don’t think he’s feeling it, everybody out. So he shuts the door and locks it. Then he crawls on the bed, climbs on top of me and says, ‘I’m the girl, you’re the boy.’
- Accusations go from masturbating in front of people in a hotel room, putting fingers inside of people's mouths, wearing a loose robe to show his penis to models, masturbate models when they were alone, putting his hand under people pants, and jumping of many models during solo shoots. etc.
- Testino's lawyers have been shutting down many accusers for almost 20 years under the argument that people agreed to the advances to improve their careers and managed to go through the shoot and get contracts.
- Accusations also include photographer Bruce Weber.

Anna Wintour and Conde Nast have officially said they won't be working with them any more after this accusations.
