So who is this Peter Capaldi person, anyway?

So there you have it. 55-year-old Peter Capaldi IS the new Doctor... But (we hear at least some of you cry) who actually is he?

Well, for those of you who aren't familar with the Scottish-born actor, he's probably most well known for playing crude, rude and expletive-loving Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It but he's also starred in The Hour, Skins, The Vicar of Dibley, and Doctor Who spin off Torchwood!

He's even appeared in Doctor Who itself while David Tennant held the keys to the Tardis.

Here are a few of Capaldi's best TV moments to date...

As Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It

As Randall Brown in The Hour

As John Frobisher in Torchwood

As Caecilius in Doctor Who

As Mark Jenkins in Skins

As Tristram Campbell in The Vicar of Dibley

As Mr Whiskers in The Greatest Store in the World

As Uncle Rory in the Crow Road

As the Angel Islington in Neverwhere

Hanging out in a location other than a film set, Zachary Quinto and Alice Eve enjoyed a night out at the Chateau Marmont on Saturday (August 3).

The 31-year-old actress wore a speckled sweater, black pants, and clog heels, as her "Star Trek Into Darkness" co-star sported a gray and navy blue sweatshirt and brown pants.

Soon, fans can catch Alice in "Cold Comes the Night," in which she plays a single mom who finds herself entangled with a Russian gangster who is going blind and needs to retrieve his cash.

Directed by Tze Chun, the thriller co-stars "Breaking Bad's" Walter White himself, Bryan Cranston. "Cold Comes the Night" hits theaters on Setpember 20th in the UK.

Chris Pine supports the L.A. Dodgers as he walks through LAX Airport to catch a departing flight on Saturday night (August 3) in Los Angeles.

An Ode To...The Women Of Orange Is The New Black

 photo orange_zpsbf648f95.jpg

Maybe it was because you saw an ad for it in the subway and wanted to see if Laura Prepon still had it in her. Or perhaps you were won over by House of Cards, and wanted to see if the next Netflix original (that horror thing that we did not watch does not count) lived up to the raised bar. Or — very likely — one of your girlfriends urged you, begged you, to watch the show. "You'll watch all the episodes in one day," she might have warned. "It's the best thing, ever."

However you came to this point of complete Orange Is The New Black obsession, it doesn't matter. It's clearly a very good thing that Chapman, Vause, Red, Nichols, and the other inmates of Litchfield are a part of your life. Your psyche, eve. For a show that's staged in an environment that the majority of women will (hopefully) never experience, the themes hit very close to home. Who can't relate to damaged relationship that just won't quit? Feeling proud for your BFF who's rising to success but hurt that she won't be able to take you along with her? Feeling held down by forces you can't change? And also, feeling all the joy and empowerment that comes along with moments of human connection — and the micro-moments of triumph that happen in the most ordinary of lives.

So, we're taking a moment to say this: Thank you to the actresses, writers, and producers for creating a show with such nuance. Women are complicated creatures, and rarely do we get to see such a candid (and relatable!) take on female careers, sexuality, relationships, race, and religion as we do in Orange Is The New Black. Thank you for having a real transgendered actress portray a transgendered inmate; for nerdily planting a "Spock" joke with Star Trek alum, Kate Mulgrew; and for giving us the chance to see early '00s stars Natasha Lyonne, Taryn Manning, Jason Biggs, and Lauren Prepon really shine. Now...how many sleeps until Season Two?

The Civic Sessions: Jack Gleeson

This is a 15 minute podcast interview with Jack Gleeson. It won't embed, so you can either go to the source or CLICK HERE to listen. And since I certainly don't expect you fine folk to listen to the whole thing (altho if you've got the time then yeah), I have summarized it below:

- Considers his work on GoT a "job" that he just shows up to, does his work, and then leaves when it's done
- Likes his theater work because it's more collaborative: "not about the professional aspect of it, but making theater with my friends"
- Doesn't consider himself an academic, but someone with academic interests
- Talks about devised pieces vs. improvised pieces vs. scripted pieces
- Talks about the collaborative creative process his theatre company adopts (he gets kind of technical here)
- Says he doesn't dislike scripted work (aka work like GoT)
- His dream role is Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream: "I've never got to play him, but I feel like my personality would lend itself well to playing Puck."
- Talks about how pleasant people are who come up to him and how humbling it can be (people in pubs are the friendliest, lol)
- Talks about Collapsing Horse's new piece The Event, which is a sci-fi play centered around the rarity of paper in the future
- His theatre company, Collapsing Horse, has been given a residency at the Civic Theatre. So they're basically just being given a space to create and preview shows, which is totally awesome.
- They're also going to teach puppetry classes to young people because puppetry is cool.

Collapsing Horse also features Writer: Eoghan Quinn / Puppeteer: Aaron Heffernan / Design: Colm McNally / Music :Danny Forde / Performer/Ass. Producer: Jack Gleeson / Producer: Matthew Smyth

The Real Housewives of Melbourne cast - L-R: Andrea Moss, Lydia Schiavello, Jackie Gillies, Janet Roach, Gina Liano and Chyka Keebaugh.

“The Real Housewives of Melbourne” won’t hit TV screens until 2014, but viewers can now guess the drama that will unfold on the show based on the recently revealed cast. Based on the popular U.S. reality show, the Australian franchise is set to feature the pampered lifestyle of six affluent women who will “have Australia talking.”

Foxtel has announced the six women who are joining the cast of the show formerly known as “The Real Housewives of Australia,” and if there’s anything that viewers of the series franchise in the U.S. know, it’s that the cast were picked because they promise to be controversial in the show.

The Real Housewives of Melbourne features a fabulous array of privileged, powerful, and glamorous women and is sure to be compelling viewing embracing all the drama and extravagance, triumphs, and pitfalls we have come to love about the Real Housewives franchise,” Brian Walsh, Foxtel Executive Director of Television, said, as per TV Tonight.

We settled on Melbourne because it had the strongest selection of women – colourful identities with the most lavish of lifestyles and who are prepared to talk and not hold back! I think we have a very special group of women who will have Australia talking.

The reality show is now in production, but there’s no definite air date yet. Foxtel’s Arena channel will premiere the show in early 2014.

The cast of “The Real Housewives of Melbourne”:

Gina Liano– One of Melbourne’s top barristers, Gina is a single mother of two, and a sister to designers Bettina and Teresa Liano.

Lydia Schiavello– An interior design and decoration student at RMIT University, Lydia is recently married to well known architect and CEO Andrew Norbury. She leads a diverse lifestyle and loves spending time with her family, which is composed of her six children and step-children.

Janet Roach– Described as “fabulous and fun,” Janet, a millionaire property developer, is living her life to the fullest as she rediscovers herself after leaving husband number two overnight. She’s a mum of two adult boys, aged 25 and 29.

Chyka Keebaugh– A mother of two teenagers, Chyka is a co-owner of one of the country’s largest and most successful and extravagant event companies, The Big Group and The Design Depot.

Jackie Gillies– Wife of Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies, Jackie is the youngest of the cast. She’s not only the wife of a rock royalty, she’s also a celebrity psychic.

Vulture Shares Their 5 Thoughts on Why the Academy Picked Ellen DeGeneres Again as Oscar Host

0
0

We've got an Oscar host! The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced this morning that Ellen DeGeneres would return to the Academy Awards as emcee, marking her second hosting stint. What are we to make of this news? Here are five immediate thoughts I had about why AMPAS picked DeGeneres … and what it will mean for the next Oscarcast.

1. The new Academy president wants to convey stability.
On Tuesday night, AMPAS elected a new president in Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the first African-American to nab the title and only the third woman. The next morning, Boone Isaacs told reporters that her top priority would be finding the next Oscar host … and boy, she didn't waste any time! Admittedly, it helped that producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan were returning for this year's Oscarcast — that pick was announced back in April, and the two men had definitely been closing in on a host since — but today's news will reassure the Academy that Boone Isaacs moves quickly.

2. No more misogyny
The day after last year's Oscars, all anybody could talk about was host Seth MacFarlane's misogynistic jokes; as Vulture's Margaret Lyons put it then, "This wasn't an awards ceremony so much as a black-tie celebration of the straight white male gaze." Suffice it to say, then, that there's no chance of DeGeneres scripting or performing a song as controversial as MacFarlane's "We Saw Your Boobs." DeGeneres is also the first woman to host the Oscars on her own since … well, since her solo stint in 2006. (Before that, it was Whoopi Goldberg in 2001.) Perhaps Boone Isaacs realized that the historically female Oscar audience deserved a little respect.

3. The Academy will stop chasing the young audience … for now.
Over the past few years, AMPAS has gone to great lengths to pick a host who'd make some noise: Whether it was the pairing of James Franco and Anne Hathaway in 2011, the aborted choice of Eddie Murphy as host for the 2012 Oscars, or Seth MacFarlane's pick last year, the Academy has seemed hell-bent on finding a host who might draw curious viewers— particularly, the elusive young male demographic — to the telecast. The 55-year-old DeGeneres signals a shift in thinking; we've seen her do this thing before, so the curiosity factor is nil, and young men aren't exactly her core audience. It wouldn't surprise me if AMPAS once again goes for an outside-the-box pick next year, but for now, the awards organization seems to have made peace with the idea of an Oscarcast that's comfy, familiar, and defiantly older-skewing.

Two more thoughts by Vulture at the ( SOURCE )

I, for one, don't mind at all that Ellen is hosting. Not exactly the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler HBIC hostess combo I was praying for, but Ellen's still a legit and decent choice, imo.

Et tu, ONTD? Are you happy/sad/violently pissed that Ellen is hosting next year's Oscars?

Pop Icon Kylie Minogue linked to The Voice UK

It is reported that Kylie Minogue is in talks to become a mentor on BBC One's music talent show The Voice UK, following the departures of Jessie J and The Script's Danny O'Donoghue.

Daily Star Sunday quotes a show source as saying:"Show execs have put Kylie at the top of their hit list. She's still a huge name in the pop industry and has over 25 years' music experience."

The source added: "Kylie is preparing to reinvent herself again after signing to Jay-Z's management firm Roc Nation, so it will all depend on timings and whether she can fit in the show around her release and promo schedule."

A spokesperson for the singer declined to comment.

Other names to be linked to a mentor role for the third series include Paloma Faith and Will Young.

TV Reporter Shea Allen Discusses Blog Post That Led To Her Firing!!!

Inside Edition spoke with Shea Allen, a TV reporter who was fired after her personal blog went viral.

In case you're unaware of Shea Allen's story, up until a few days ago she was an investigative reporter in Huntsville, Alabama.

That ended, both the good and bad, as soon as she published a post to her personal blog called "Confessions of a Red-Headed Reporter," which both laid out and ever-so-gently riffed on the real life of a small-market reporter.

Shea said she was fired summarily: “I thought my performance had warranted at least a conversation,” she told Redd. “I certainly didn’t think it would come to this,” she told Janet Shamlian on Today.

Carolina Panthers make child with terminal illness coach for a day; Cam Newton gets his autograph

0
0

After being hired as an honorary coach for the Carolina Panthers on Saturday, 8-year-old Jack Bolton was at a loss for words.

That's not to say that Coach Bolton was speechless.

In preparation for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Panthers turning his dream into a reality, Bolton penned a pregame speech to share with the team. But after the overwhelming experience of signing his contract, getting his gear and then spending time with his heroes in the locker room prior to Fan Fest, he couldn't bring himself to deliver his inspiring words.

Still, his mere presence inspired the Panthers even before head coach Ron Rivera stepped in and read Bolton's speech.

"He was a little too nervous to read it, but when Coach Rivera read it, hearing the response of the team was pretty awesome," said Jack's mother, Holly. "He's such a huge Panthers fan. He keeps up with everything they're doing."

After taking the field through the players' tunnel with Rivera at his side, Coach Bolton literally kept up with what his favorite team was doing, keeping stats on the sideline while keeping his whistle and challenge flag at the ready. In between his coaching duties, he collected autographs, memorabilia and most memorably hugs, handshakes and high-fives.

By the end of practice, Bolton had become so popular that his favorite player, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, knelt down and asked Bolton for his autograph.

"It's a pretty special day," said Jack's father, John. "The dimensions of this wish just go on and on. Just to be in the stadium was super-special, but this is unbelievable. I don't know how they pulled it together."

Coach Bolton knows that football teams face obstacles all the time, and his personal obstacle is one he tries to tackle head-on every day. Bolton has spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that severely impacts his mobility and respiratory health.

His parents are both carriers of the disease, meaning there's a one-in-four chance that each of their offspring will contract the disease. Coach Bolton's older sister, Eleanor, was diagnosed with the disease at age 2, about a month before he was born with it.

The long-term prognosis for the siblings steadily improves each year.

"There's no cure yet, but it's coming," John Bolton said. "We will have it in our lifetime no doubt because they've regenerated what they're missing. Now it's a matter delivering the cells to the body.

"We're very optimistic that even if the cure isn't here for a while that they'll be fine."

Coach Bolton has loved football his whole life, but because of his physical challenges, he had to find a different way of getting into the game.

"He's been coaching his friends at recess for several years, lining them up and calling plays," Holly Bolton said. "He's very interested in coaching, so when he got to make a wish, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He wanted to coach the Panthers."

Guillermo del Toro’s Original Idea for Pacific Rim 2

0
0

Charlie Day says the plan may have changed, but Guillermo del Toro told him who one of the villains was going to be in Pacific Rim 2.

A successful opening in China makes Pacific Rim a more international hit than it was domestically. The linked report says Warner Brothers is now thinking about a sequel. Good timing for me, as Charlie Day was with the Television Critics Association for the new season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” today and I had a one on one interview with him.

Day shared the sequel talk that he heard from Guillermo del Toro on the set of Pacific Rim, which was a shocking turn for his scientist character Newt. “I remember when I first met with him that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film,” Day said. “But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I don’t think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea.”

To put this in perspective, Day said del Toro shared a lot of ideas that changed through the creative process. “Guillermo is one of these guys that his mind is so active that he might have an idea about something and then it’s a completely different idea five minutes later.”

In CraveOnline’s interview with Day this summer Day shared his hopes that Newt would get a jaeger to pilot in the sequel. He still wants one, only now he elaborates on ideas to copilot one in a drift with fellow scientist Gottlieb (Burn Gorman).

“I’m hopeful that we get to drive a big punching robot,” Day said. “I think traditionally in those comics, sometimes the science guys put together a cheap, dorky version of one of the robots so maybe we’ll get to do something like that.

Day is managing expectations though. The Chinese box office is good news, but nothing is guaranteed. “I also don’t know if it would ever get made. I think because there’s no one in a cape it might hurt our chances of making another one. We’ll see. Look, I would love to do it. Hopefully if it keeps performing this well overseas we’ll get to find out.”

Behati Prinsloo, Victoria's Secret Angel, Doesn't Believe In Bras

0
0

You'd think a Victoria's Secret model is comfortable in bras, right? Wrong, according to Behati Prinsloo.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, Behati confessed that she prefers not to wear a bra -- aside from when she's working, of course -- and encourages other women to take them off. Of the all-natural look, she says:

"I don't see the huge hoo-ha around it. Everybody has the same [body parts]. It's a body, it’s beautiful. Don't go naked, but if you're not wearing a bra and it's appropriate, totally."

Being a Victoria's Secret Angel sure has it's perks -- the future Mrs. Adam Levine admits she owns more than 50 bras. Still, Behati would likely toss them all in favor of frolicking free. Don't worry, Victoria's Secret: We're sure Behati will happily model your underwear.
