-Welcome to another edition of OP exposing the problematic show that he loves and will probs keep watching because dumpster fires are hard to look away from
-First I'd like to preface by saying this writer calls
Riverdale the best show on television. React accordingly.
-Praises
Riverdale for its (surface-level) diversity, focusing primarily on the character Veronica Lodge and her family's change from white in the comics to Latino in the show
-Criticizes the use of Spanglish in regards to the Lodge family, as just about every episode Hermione or Hiram Lodge refer to their daughter as "mija" to remind viewers that they are Latino, but fail to speak much Spanish otherwise
-
Riverdale doesn't elaborate on exactly where the Lodge family originates from culturally, basically making them ambiguous Latinos despite the community spanning dozens of countries, and they don't really do any cultural things beside spout "mija" and "mi amor" every once in a while
-Hermione does speak one full line of Spanish in this scene:
-But this article seems to think her parenting isn't a very realistic depiction of the Latin community either:
"To be honest, though, if Veronica’s mom was really that Latina, Veronica would never get away with half the shit she pulled in season one."-Praises
Jane the Virgin for its realistic depiction of dual Spanish/English-speakers and dynamics within the Latin-American community
