Mariah Carey's enduring Christmas classic, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," topped the charts this year after 23 years of ringing in the holidays. In an attempt to follow her record-breaking footsteps, many artists have released their own Christmas songs this year. However, not every artist can be so lucky to have a hit holiday tune like the Elusive Chanteuse.
Below, I've made a small roundup of the best and worst Christmas songs released in 2017 (according to me). Enjoy!
BEST:Shania Twain and Nick Jonas - Say All You Want For Christmas
Shania Twain is involved. Need I say more?
The country inspired song makes for easy listening and their voices work well together. Will it become a replay-able classic like Mariah's? Probably not. But it's definitely one of the stronger contributions to Christmas music released this year.
WORST:Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton - You Make It Feel Like Christmas
They sound bad together and nobody wants to listen to Blake Shelton's caterwauling while opening presents. It just isn't enjoyable and is one of those songs that would drive you mad after more than one listen. They also released this way back in September, which is obnoxiously early.
BEST:Kelly Clarkson - Christmas Eve
It's upbeat, it's fun, Kelly sounds great, and it's short and to the point (although pretty repetitive). Does it top her previous Christmas releases? No, but it's a solid Christmas track.
WORST:Sia - Santa's Coming For Us
Without the lyric video, I would have no idea what she's even saying for half of this song. Her pronunciation gets so awkward at times that it sounds like she's singing, "Santa's coming for ush." Her vocals sound strained and it's hard to listen to. Plus the song is slightly unnerving as it sounds like a threat: QUICK, HIDE! HE'S COMING FOR US, ONTD!
BEST:Hanson - Finally It's Christmas
"Finally it's Christmas, feels like we've been waiting all year!" While the verses might not draw you in right away, the chorus is a blast. It's a big, fun, Christmas song. Hanson are great (I don't care, fight me ONTD).
WORST:Panic! At The Disco - Feels Like Christmas
The chorus is kind of nice but the rest of it is downright cacophonous.
BEST:98° - Season Of Love
Despite my feelings of hatred for Nick Lachey, this song is an undeniable bop! They sound good, it's catchy as hell, and it's fun to sing. There's a music video for this track, but I thought I would spare you all having to sit through that (Merry Christmas from me to you!).
WORST:Why Don't We - Kiss You This Christmas
Instantly forgettable and the song goes absolutely nowhere. It'll leave you asking, "that's it?" and, "what's the point of that?"
BEST: Fantasia - What Are You Doing New Years Eve?
Finally! A smooth, jazzy Christmas tune courtesy of Fantasia that makes for a perfect song to listen to cuddled up next to a warm fire. The instrumentals set this song apart from the other more pop-oriented songs released this year and Fantasia's voice sounds lovely.
WORST:August Burns Red - Last Christmas (cover)
It's just so bad...why? WHY?
Undecided:Kaskade - This Christmas Night
It's not terrible, but it's kind of depressing. I think I'd be into it if it weren't a Christmas song.
