This year's Black List, a survey of movie execs of their favorite unproduced screenplays, is out!

$
0
0
The Black List is an annual survey of a whole bunch of executives who work in Hollywood, asking them to name 10 of their favorite unproduced screenplays from that year. Any screenplay that gets 6 or more mentions gets compiled. Previous Black Listed screenplays that went on to become movies include such award winners as Spotlight, Arrival, and The Social Network as well as crowd-pleasers like John Wick, The Hangover, and The Fault in Our Stars. And we got ourselves a brand-spanking new Black List earlier today!

Some good news as pointed out by The Wrap: So many women! Women as the main character and as the screenwriters were more plentiful on this year's list than ever before. So plentiful, they almost come close to 50%! 25 of the 76 scripts on this year's list were written by women: that's 33%! 34 out of those 76 scripts have a female character as the lead: that's 45%! Among those female protagonists, 5 are assassins (at least 2 deal with that female assassin saving their daughters). There are several biopics about extraordinary women: one on Wendy Davis, the Texas State Senator who fillibustered for 11 hours to defend reproductive rights; a long overdue one on Nancy Wake, a secret agent and resistance leader in WWII, who became the Gestapo's most wanted person, and also a biopic on J.K. Rowling, the British novelist who went from homeless and broke to being the president of the Johnny Depp fan club. In conclusion: Women! As leads! As writers! How exotic!

So I went over this year's Black List (it's a PDF), and I'm going to list some of the ones that stood out to me. But please, go over them yourself and list the ones you like/dislike and who you'd want to cast in them!

Breaking News in Yuba County (favorited by 19 execs)
Written by Amanda Idoko
Plot: After catching her husband in bed with a hooker, which causes him to die of a heart attack, Sue Bottom buries the body and takes advantage of the local celebrity status that comes from having a missing husband.
My take: This seems like trashy fun!

The Jellyfish Project (favorited by 12 execs)
Written by Sarah Jane Inwards
Plot: A young black girl’s family in 1960s Mississippi decides to harbor two human-looking refugees who have mysteriously fallen from the sky.
My take: I am alarmed. WhiteNonsense.gif (Ms. Inwards is white). I am always leery of layering fantastical elements on serious, brutal historical events, and this could be one of them. But maybe it'll be good! I'll be keeping an eye out.

Moxie (favorited by 10 execs)
Written by Heather Quinn
Plot: To combat crime in near-future Los Angeles, the FBI creates supercops based on specific genetic sequences. To their shock, their best candidate is a vulgar stripper named Moxie.
My take: A sci-fi action comedy where the superhero is a vulgar stripper who shows up the LAPD? I'm in!

Jihotties (favorited by 7 execs)
Written by Molly Prather
Plot: In an effort to fund their start-up, two women catfish ISIS and get more than they bargained for when the CIA recruits them as spies.
My take: WhiteNonsense.gif part II

The White Devils (favorited by 6 execs)
Written by Leon Hendrix III
Plot: Cassius raises his sons, Malcolm and Mandela, isolated and alone in the woods. They have never met another person in their entire lives. The boys have learned to survive and protect their fragile family at all cost. When they find a mysterious wounded white girl, June, alone and lost in their woods, prejudice, lies and love set them on a collision course with the real world that puts all their lives at risk.
My take: This seems likely to lead to some serious wankery if it gets produced. And it might actually be good!

Jimmy Kimmel & son Billy urge you to call Congress to tell them to fund CHIP

Jimmy’s baby Billy had his second open heart surgery last week so Jimmy had guest hosts fill in for him while he was out. Thankfully the surgery was a success and Jimmy returned to the show tonight with Billy in tow to show everyone how well he is doing. Jimmy thanks the bright and talented doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital LA. He has to have one more surgery when he is around six years old and then he is good to go. However, the fight is not over for millions of children whose health is threatened right now because a program called CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), that is there to protect them, is in serious need of funding because Congress recently failed to approve funding for it. This is not a partisan issue. Democrats and Republicans have always overwhelmingly supported it – until now. Now it’s being used as a bargaining chip. So Jimmy is encouraging everyone to call the House and Senate at (202) 225-3121 to tell them to take a break from tax cuts and fully fund CHIP now. Also, if you don’t have health insurance make sure to go to healthcare.gov and sign up before the December 15th deadline. #FundCHIPNow

ONTD Original: 10 Facts About “Ice Queens” Rekha and Catherine Deneuve

Nicknamed the “Ice Queens” of cinema, these ladies were not taken seriously as actresses in the beginning of their careers due to their looks. But the more films they acted in, the more audiences and critics realized their talent.

Catherine Deneuve
nYU35i.jpg
“A woman has to be intelligent, have charm, a sense of humor, and be kind. It's the same qualities I require from a man.”

Catherine Deneuve is a notable French actress who was so popular she became a favorite of many popular directors. She was most known for her aloof and sexual characters. She became a huge icon in French pop culture and also famous internationally for her Chanel ads.

1) Catherine’s parents were both stage actors
2) Catherine’s sister, Françoise Dorléac, perished in a car accident
3) In 1957, she had her first film debut in “Les Collégiennes”
4) Her image was used for “Marianne”, the national symbol of the French Republic
5) In 1971, Catherine was among 343 women who risked prosecution for signing the “Manifesto of the 343”, also called the “the 343 sluts”. The document stated, “I declare that I am one of them. I declare that I have had an abortion.” back when abortions were illegal in France. The point was to change laws to allow abortion to be legal.
6) She was Yves Saint Laurent’s muse and he designed costumes for some of her films including “Belle de Jour” and “The Hunger”
7) She was married to photographer David Bailey, but since the divorce feels that marriage is unnecessary
8) Said she was once in a relationship where she felt like a trapped trophy wife
9) She worked in both art house and box office hit films
10) 1964’s “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” is considered to be the film that catapulted her into stardom

Rekha
nY96nE.jpg
“ Bombay was like a jungle, and I had walked in unarmed. It was one of the most frightening phases of my life... I was totally ignorant of the ways of this new world. Guys did try and take advantage of my vulnerability. I did feel, "What am I doing? I should be in school, having an ice-cream, fun with my friends, why am I even forced to work, deprived of normal things that a child should be doing at my age?" Every single day I cried, because I had to eat what I didn't like, wear crazy clothes with sequins and stuff poking into my body. Costume, jewelry would give me an absolute terrible allergy. Hair spray wouldn't go off for days even despite all my washing. I was pushed, literally dragged from one studio to another. A terrible thing to do to a 13-year-old child.”

Rekha became a huge Bollywood star through her determination and extreme makeover. She cultivated herself into a glamorous and mysterious image in the industry’s history. Even though her personal life had a lot of controversy, she never backed away from taking risks on screen.

1) Rekha’s parents were both famous actors
2) Rekha’s parents weren’t married when she born and her father denied his paternity which haunted Rekha through the years. Her father later tried to reconcile, but Rekha ignored him.
3) As a child actress she was told she was too dark, overweight, and unkempt
4) In 1966, her first film debut was in “Rangula Ratnam”
5) She was rumored to be the mistress of Amitabh Bachchan. Because of that she is a “persona non grata” to the older members of the Bachchan family. They’ve taken to not acknowledging her in public.
6) She won a national award for the film “Umrao Jaan”
7) She allegedly had a sultry relationship with Vinod Khanna, but it ended because his mother didn’t approve
8) Rekha was considered to be Bollywood’s first superstar during a time when women were just love interests of male heroes.
9) She follows her own style of life she calls “Rekha-ism”. Which she remains as private as possible and not to announce every little thing to the media or post on twitter.
10) She was only married once to businessman Mukesh Aggarwal. After many attempts, he was able to commit suicide and Rekha was blamed for his death because of her rumored affair with Amitabh. She never married again after her husband’s death.

Both these women worked hard for their place in the film industry and have made such an impact they became part of the "classics".

#MeToo Movement Recasts 'Sorry Not Sorry' Into A Message Of Empowerment

$

"Sometimes a moment in history can cast a piece of art in a new light. For me, that happened in 2017 with Demi Lovato's "Sorry (Not Sorry)," after the #MeToo movement took off."

This piece, by Courtney E. Smith, examines how Lovato's track--although originally penned as a rebuke to childhood bullies--has taken on new meaning for her in light of the repercussions that are beginning to face sexual predators.

"I found myself revisiting it as more and more stories of sexual misconduct broke, as a news cycle in which survivors were finally believed stretched out, and abusers at the highest levels were exposed. As I peeled back my own layers and re-examined suspicious interactions in my past, and as I sifted through innumerable stories from women who have been assaulted both in the news and in my social circle, I have found myself wanting to amplify the voices of women in all arenas, including in the media I consume. I want to hear what strong women say and think, which led me back to this track."

She breaks down the lyrical content:

"[They] frequently align quite naturally with the way survivors of abuse feel — after all, bullying and sexual assault or harassment are both offenses in which someone seeks to establish power over another."

Smith also delves into Demi's vocals and how she uses the power and emotion behind them to infuse the track with therapeutic strength. Her conclusion:

"It sounds like the voice of a woman shaking off the patriarchy to me. Not sorry.

~ The whole article is a pretty interesting read; I'd suggest reading the whole thing at the source.

Olympian Lindsey Vonn faces backlash for Anti-Trump comments before 2018 Winter Olympics

- Olympyic Skier Lindsey Vonn also known for previously dating Tiger Woods, says she will "represent American citizens but not Donald Trump".

-If she wins a medal, she will not visit the White House.

- Conservatives are mad, Fox News is shook because Tiger Woods went golfing with Trump last week.

- She is now getting death threats by Trump stans.
"As I head to France for the next races, I would like to share with you my reflections from the past few days.
I've received a tremendous amount of feedback, both positive and negative, about my recent CNN interview. The point that I was trying to articulate is that all Olympic athletes represent their nation as a whole, and are not representatives of their government or any specific political figure or party. None of us work tirelessly for years on end to compete in the Olympics on behalf of Democrats or Republicans. The Olympics are a non-political event, a chance for everyone to put aside their differences and be on the same "team.". That does not mean that Olympic athletes don't have political opinions. As an American, I am extremely proud that our great nation was founded on principals and ideals where citizens can express our opinions openly. It is a privilege that some others around the world don't have.

I am proud to be an American, and I want our country to continue to be a symbol of hope, compassion, inclusion and world unity. My travels around the world have recently made clear that this is no longer how people view the United States. You cannot pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV in Europe without noticing how people are questioning our direction. It seems to me that we must lead with understanding and strive for unity in our relationships throughout the world.

As for myself, my recent comments opened up my eyes as to how divided we are right now. It is hurtful to read comments where people are hoping I break my neck or that God is punishing me for being "anti-Trump." We need to find a way to put aside our differences and find common ground in communicating. Is it wrong to hope for a better world?

All of this is much bigger than skiing and the Olympics. I am going to take the next two months to focus on what I can do and right now that is competing for my country. In doing that, I will be hoping that we Americans can still be that "shining city on a hill."

Morrissey Still Garbage, Vegan Prince Johnny Marr Is Still The Superior Smiths Member, Water Is Wet

$
0
0
-German news outlet, Der Spiegel, has published the audio recording of Morrissey's controversial interview in which he victim blamed the Kevin Spacey accusers.
-Morrissey, in true Morrissey fashion, blamed the media and said he was misquoted (he wasn't) and vowed to never speak to the press again.
-Relevant ONTD post of the initial controversy here.

You can listen to Der Spiegel's interview in English here.
-The Kevin Spacey discussion begins at 24:20 minutes into the interview.

-Morrissey dismisses the #metoo movement as soon as the interviewer brings it up and says that the whole thing has become "theatre" and claims that, "anybody who has ever said to another person 'I quite like you,' suddenly they're being accused of sexual harassment."

-Demonstrates that he still doesn't understand what sexual harassment entails by saying, "If you can't say to somebody that you like them, how will they ever know?"

-And it just gets worse:

"Well, Kevin Spacey was 26, the boy was 14. You have to wonder where the boy's parents were. You have to assume that the boy had an inkling of what might possibly happen. I mean, I don't know about you, but I've never been in...in...in my youth I was never in situations like that. Never! And I was always aware of where things could go and if you're in somebody's bedroom, you have to be aware of where it could lead to..."

Morrissey released a "woe is me" statement on his Facebook yesterday basically saying he does not take any responsibility for his words and demanded Der Spiegel release the full audio (bloop - bet he regrets that!). A fan account retweeted the statement which you can see below:

In non-shitbag news, Johnny Marr has released new music and remains untainted by Morrissey's evil:

From the video description:

Johnny Marr has teamed up with the award-winning actor Maxine Peake to create a new project which sets Peake’s spoken word performances to Marr’s instrumental soundscapes. ‘The Priest’ is based upon the characters that Joe Gallagher met on the streets in the first few days after becoming homeless in Edinburgh. Gallagher wrote a diary of his experiences for the Big Issue under the pseudonym James Campbell when he first became homeless in May 2015 and continued until he found a new home in March 2016.

This short film was filmed in Manchester and features Molly Windsor in the lead role. ‘The Priest’ will be followed by the release of Johnny Marr’s third solo album in the spring of 2018.

I know what you're thinking - "a spoken word music video?" YES. And it's fucking brilliant.
