Ontd Original: Four Tv Shows Set Inside Prison
As we now live in a climate of counting down till the next predator in various high profile industries are exposed, the sad truth is they often don't pay for their crimes. Here is four fictional shows about prison life and a few characters who find themselves in usually harrowing jails worldwide.
Where to start with Oz...I would call this a gay show but so many people of various genders & orientations were somehow graphically screwing 24/7 inside a men's max prison. There were some really horrible incarcerated people inside of Oswald State Correctional Facility such as unhinged Adebisi, who always had a knit hat clinging precariously to his bald head, white supremacist leader Schillinger played with too-chilling menace by J.K. Simmons plus Sister Pete (Nuyorican goddess Rita Moreno) the tough-as-fuck nun and prison psychologist. It also gave audiences the engrossing, completely unhealthy ships of Beecher+Keller & O'Reily+Dr. Nathan. Oz is six seasons of politics, murder, sex, sometimes bewildering plotlines and critiques on life & the prison industrial complex during its earlier seasons through the voice of narrator/disabled convict Hill (Harold Perrineau)
This Australian show is about Bea (Danielle Cormack) a woman awaiting sentencing for the attempted murder of her husband. Of course Bea has to learn how to navigate this bonkers women's prison filled with plenty of familiar archetypes including a warden/prisoner who is basically a combo of the Trunchbull and Nurse Ratched. Lots of wild fights, intrigue, politics, love, all the works plotwise.
Prison Break starred a peak Wentworth Miller as Michael, an engineer who trys to free his wrongfully imprisoned brother Lincoln (slab of wood Dominic Purcell) from jail. How? By getting himself thrown in prison to hatch an ridiculously elaborate escape plan. Especially since his brother is convicted of killing the brother of the VP of America. It's as ridiculous a plot as it sounds. And was wildly popular before it got too comfortable in its own hype. The show was brought back for a mildly successful 5th season in May of this year.
Underrated actor Lennie James (The Walking Dead) stars as Lee, a career criminal forced to accept a long sentence in a chance to protect a family member. This critically acclaimed British show won a BATA in 2004. Unfortunately it retained poor ratings which caused it to not be renewed. Buried, like Wentworth, explored the often terrifying power hierachies in prison from inmates to staff.

Rita may not know much about Christmas, but that won't keep her from the festivities
Rita showed up at the BBC Radio 1 studios to kick off the Live Lounge's week of special Christmas covers. She performed a cover of Last Christmas in the BBC live lounge. Rita (who is not a vegan) ended with your usual Christmas message to the vegans:
"I just want to take a minute to say Merry Christmas everybody. Everybody listen. I hope you have an amazing meal this year. And all my vegans, Happy Vegan Christmas!"
Before her performance, she called in to Nick Grimshaw's show and he started talking about nativity scenes. Rita has absolutely no idea what he's talking about or what characters are involved but she pretends she does:
Grimmy: Who were you in the school nativity?
Rita: Who I was where?
Grimmy: In the school nativity
Rita: What's a school nativity?
Grimmy:Nativity at school
Rita: What's a nativity?
Grimmy: Are you joking, the school play where you tell the story of the birth of Jesus and the reason for Christmas
Rita: Oh you mean the reason for Christmas?
Grimmy: Yeah, like who were you? I was like a shepherd.
Rita: I was like, uh, do you know what I was actually, I was a goat.
Grimmy: A GOAT?
Rita: Oh no, the shepherd, the shepherd sorry, not the goat.
Despite not being particularly good at faking being into Christmas, Rita has been doing the full Christmas circuit including the LOVE magazine Advent Calendar again. She had a different director than all the other women and since he apparently didn't get the memo about this year's food and fitness theme, she was just dressed up as a sexy bumblebee and dancing to her song "Anywhere":
She began the holiday season by turning the Christmas lights on Oxford Street on:
It’s official! I just turned on the #oxstlightson so it’s that time of the year!! Big up Xmas! #londonpic.twitter.com/DjpBHLBQ4d
— Rita Ora (@RitaOra) November 7, 2017
She also performed at Jingle Ball and wore a Santa inspired outfit:

Thank you for such an unforgettable year & for supporting all of my new music & all my fans who have believed in me! 2018! We’re coming! #JBB2017#Anywherepic.twitter.com/OHTRYOnE0z

15 Movies Based on Fascinating News Stories.
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Based on: A bank robbery committed by John Wojtowicz and Salvatore Naturale.
About: On August 22, 1972, Wojtowicz, along with Salvatore Naturale and Robert Westenberg, attempted to rob a branch of the Chase Manhattan bank at 450 Avenue P in Gravesend, Brooklyn. The Los Angeles Times reported the heist was meant to pay for Eden's sex reassignment surgery. However, Arthur Bell, a respected Village Voice columnist and investigative journalist who knew Wojtowicz (and was tangentially involved in the negotiations), reported that paying for Eden's sex change was only peripheral to the real motive. The attempted heist was, according to him, a well-planned Mafia operation that went horribly wrong.
Wojtowicz and Naturale held seven Chase Manhattan bank employees hostage for 14 hours. Westenberg fled the scene before the robbery got underway, when he saw a police car on the street. Wojtowicz, a former bank teller, had some knowledge of bank operations but apparently based his plan on scenes from the movie The Godfather (1972), which he had seen earlier that day.
Wojtowicz was arrested, but Naturale was killed by the FBI during the final moments of the incident.
Badlands (1973)
Based on: Murder spree killers Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate.
About: In 1956, eighteen-year-old Charles Starkweather was introduced to 13-year-old Caril Ann Fugate by Caril's older sister (who he had previously dated) Caril's family disapproved of her relationship with Charles, leading the two to decide not only to run away, but to kill Fugate's entire family. On January 21, 1958, Starkweather went to Fugate's home. Fugate was not there, and after Fugate's mother and stepfather, Velda and Marion Bartlett, told him to stay away, Starkweather killed them with his shotgun, then killed their two-year-old daughter Betty Jean by strangling and stabbing her. After Fugate arrived, he hid the bodies behind the house. They remained in the house until shortly before the police, alerted by Fugate's suspicious grandmother, arrived on January 27.
Starkweather and Fugate started driving across Nebraska and into Wyoming on a spree of murders that claimed six more lives before they were arrested.
Starkweather was found guilty and received the death penalty, he was executed by electric chair at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 12:04 a.m. on June 25, 1959. Fugate received a life sentence on November 21, 1958. She was paroled in June 1976 after serving 17 1⁄2 years. She settled in Lansing, Michigan, where she changed her name and worked as a janitor at a Lansing hospital. Fugate married Frederick Clair in 2007 and, apart from a radio interview in 1996, has refused to speak of the murder spree.
Spotlight (2015)
Based on: The Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests.
About: The sexual abuse scandal in Boston archdiocese was part of a series of Catholic Church sexual abuse cases in the United States and Ireland, which led to uncovering an international scandal with the Catholic Church. In early 2002, Boston Globe coverage of a series of criminal prosecutions of five Roman Catholic priests thrust the issue of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests into the national spotlight. The coverage of these cases encouraged other victims to come forward with their allegations of abuse, resulting in more lawsuits and criminal cases.
As it became clear that there was truth to many of the allegations and that there was a pattern of sexual abuse and cover-up in a number of large dioceses across the U.S., what had originally appeared to be a few isolated cases of abuse exploded into a nationwide scandal. The resulting scandal created a crisis for the Catholic Church in the United States, encouraging victims in other nations to come forward with their allegations of abuse, thus creating a global crisis for the Church.
Ultimately, it became clear that priests and lay members of religious orders in the Catholic Church had sexually abused minors on a scale such that the accusations reached into the thousands over several decades. Although the majority of cases were reported to have occurred in the United States, victims have come forward in other nations such as Ireland, Canada and Australia. A major aggravating factor was the actions of Catholic bishops to keep these crimes secret and to reassign the accused to other parishes in positions where they had continued unsupervised contact with youth, thus allowing the abusers to continue their crimes.
The Bling Ring (2013)
Based on: Real-life gang known as the Bling Ring who robbed celebrities
About: The Bling Ring were a group of convicted thieves consisting of eight teenagers and young adults based in and around Calabasas, California. They burgled the homes of several celebrities over a period believed to have been between October 2008 through August 2009. Their activities resulted in the theft of about $3 million in cash and belongings. Much of the stolen property belonged to Paris Hilton, whose house had been burgled several times, though over fifty homes were reportedly targeted for potential burglary. They found the houses of their targets using Google Maps and website celebrityaddressaerial.com, and determined when the victims would be away by researching their schedules, such as appearances at celebrity events, through websites including Facebook and Twitter.
Bling Ring members:
1. Rachel Lee
2. Nick Prugo
3. Alexis Neiers
4. Diana Tamayo
5. Courtney Ames
6. Johnny Ajar
7. Roy Lopez Jr.
River's Edge (1986)
Based on: Anthony Jacques Broussard who killed and raped Marcy Renee Conrad.
About: Marcy Renee Conrad, 14, was killed on November 3, 1981 in Milpitas, California, by 16-year-old Anthony Jacques Broussard. Her body was transported in Broussard's pickup truck into nearby hills and dumped in a ravine. An autopsy confirmed that Conrad had been raped and then murdered by strangulation.
After the murder, Broussard invited friends from Milpitas High School to view Conrad's corpse. Reports indicate that Broussard bragged about her death at school, and showed the body to at least 10 people. After two days, two students finally broke ranks with the others and notified police. When the other Milpitas students were asked why they had not alerted police, they responded that they "did not want to get in trouble".
Broussard pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years to life. He was denied a new trial in 1985, and has repeatedly been denied parole. As of April 2013 Broussard is still incarcerated at California's Folsom State Prison.
