Welcome to the 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge! We had a lot of fun in 2017 with the first ever ONTD Reading Challenge (though we know that for some, reading the posts here is already quite the challenge). Now, milfordacademy& hjalmartazar invite you to join the new and updated 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge: 12 books, 12 months, and ONTD-themed categories. Every month, we will make a post recommending books that fit each category.

The rules are simple:

  • Each month, read a book that corresponds to the category.

  • No page limit.

  • It can be a book that you’ve already read.

  • Novellas, graphic novels, and anthologies can count toward a category.

  • Ebooks and audiobooks count as books!

  • If you missed a month, you can go back and read a previous month’s task.

  • Keep us updated on how your reading challenge is going in our book posts!

  • If you have a Goodreads account, join our ONTD Reading Challenge Group!

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped us in coming up with this year’s tasks for the challenge!

JANUARY -A book that is being adapted into a movie or TV show in 2018

It's always fun to read a book before it is made into a movie or TV show - you'll get to complain about all the things the adaptation didn't get right in the ONTD posts about it. (The post with recs for January’s books is coming soon!)

FEBRUARY -“Come to Brazil!”

It’s February, which means Carnaval in Brazil. Millions of people (including celebs) from all over the world flock to Rio, Recife, Salvador, São Paulo and other iconic cities to celebrate. This month, we invite you to Come to Brazil by reading books by Brazilian authors or that are about or set in Brazil (fiction or non-fiction).

MARCH - “Ha impact!”

Read a book by a female author who is considered to be influential and has had a significant impact in literature, culture and/or society.

APRIL - “Sure, Jan”

This month, read a book with an unreliable narrator!

MAY - “Men are weak!”

The oft-quoted expression (at least here on ONTD) came from the fantasy film, The Lord of the Rings. For this month, read a woman-authored fantasy.

JUNE - “Who?”

This month, learn more about someone by reading a biography or a memoir!

JULY - “It’s been 84 years”

Read a book that was published in 1934 OR written by an author who was born in 1934!

AUGUST - “The gossip is priceless”

This month, read a book about fame, show business or Hollywood (anything from a tell-all to a fiction book about someone famous).

SEPTEMBER - “What is the truth?”

This month, borrow Latoya’s magnifying glass and ask like Oprah: what is the truth? It’s time to read a mystery!

OCTOBER - “The darkest timeline”

This month, a twist on the spooky October theme! Read a dystopian or (post)apocalyptic book!

NOVEMBER - TL;DR

Can’t face another big-ass book? Let’s take it easy: this month, read a novella or a book under 150 pages.

DECEMBER - A book that won an award in 2018

This month’s challenge is a fun way to keep up with the year’s releases and with what’s happening in the literary world. The task is to read a book that won an award this year - any award you want. You can go high-brow with the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize or the National Book Award, explore what’s best in speculative fiction with the Hugo and Nebula awards, get scared by the Shirley Jackson or Bram Stoker Awards, read women with the Women’s Prize for Fiction, fall in love with the Romance Writers of America (RITA Awards), etc!

Mario Batali admits that he sexually harassed women

“I apologize to the people I have mistreated and hurt. Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted," Batali said. "That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort I have caused to my peers, employees, customers, friends and family."

I have work to do to try to regain the trust of those I have hurt and disappointed. For this reason, I am going to step away from day-to-day operations of my businesses. We built these restaurants so that our guests could have fun and indulge, but I took that too far in my own behavior. I won’t make that mistake again. I want any place I am associated with to feel comfortable and safe for the people who work or dine there."
"I know my actions have disappointed many people. The successes I have enjoyed are owned by everyone on my team. The failures are mine alone. To the people who have been at my side during this time — my family, my partners, my employees, my friends, my fans — I am grateful for your support and hopeful that I can regain your respect and trust. I will spend the next period of time trying to do that.”

- Four women have accused Mario Batali of sexual harassment
- Incidents occurring from the 90s to the latest in 2017
- Allegedly, grabbing breasts, uncomfortable bodily contact, and crude statements.

Ontd Original: Four Tv Shows Set Inside Prison

$

0

As we now live in a climate of counting down till the next predator in various high profile industries are exposed, the sad truth is they often don't pay for their crimes. Here is four fictional shows about prison life and a few characters who find themselves in usually harrowing jails worldwide.

Oz (1997-2003)

Where to start with Oz...I would call this a gay show but so many people of various genders & orientations were somehow graphically screwing 24/7 inside a men's max prison. There were some really horrible incarcerated people inside of Oswald State Correctional Facility such as unhinged Adebisi, who always had a knit hat clinging precariously to his bald head, white supremacist leader Schillinger played with too-chilling menace by J.K. Simmons plus Sister Pete (Nuyorican goddess Rita Moreno) the tough-as-fuck nun and prison psychologist. It also gave audiences the engrossing, completely unhealthy ships of Beecher+Keller & O'Reily+Dr. Nathan. Oz is six seasons of politics, murder, sex, sometimes bewildering plotlines and critiques on life & the prison industrial complex during its earlier seasons through the voice of narrator/disabled convict Hill (Harold Perrineau)

Wentworth (2013-)

This Australian show is about Bea (Danielle Cormack) a woman awaiting sentencing for the attempted murder of her husband. Of course Bea has to learn how to navigate this bonkers women's prison filled with plenty of familiar archetypes including a warden/prisoner who is basically a combo of the Trunchbull and Nurse Ratched. Lots of wild fights, intrigue, politics, love, all the works plotwise.

Prison Break (2005-2017)

Prison Break starred a peak Wentworth Miller as Michael, an engineer who trys to free his wrongfully imprisoned brother Lincoln (slab of wood Dominic Purcell) from jail. How? By getting himself thrown in prison to hatch an ridiculously elaborate escape plan. Especially since his brother is convicted of killing the brother of the VP of America. It's as ridiculous a plot as it sounds. And was wildly popular before it got too comfortable in its own hype. The show was brought back for a mildly successful 5th season in May of this year.

Buried (2003)

Underrated actor Lennie James (The Walking Dead) stars as Lee, a career criminal forced to accept a long sentence in a chance to protect a family member. This critically acclaimed British show won a BATA in 2004. Unfortunately it retained poor ratings which caused it to not be renewed. Buried, like Wentworth, explored the often terrifying power hierachies in prison from inmates to staff.

From cuddling on the couch with late night cutie James Corden, to sharing dressing rooms with BFFL Charlie Puth on tour, Lime has taken the entertainment industry by storm. The Pop Prince has been jingling his bells across the nation, performing at multiple Jingle Balls stops in various cities.

The fashion power house took time from his busy schedule to perform a private show for the students of Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA. The students collected over 4,000 pairs of shoes for the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation to get Lime's attention.

Lime tweeted his thanks to the school, and further challenged his large stan base to design their own 'trainers' for him. He promised to wear his favs on stage at future performances.

Earlier today Lime shared a photo of a pair of clippers on Instagram, before debuting a sexy new buzz cut on the Jingle Bell Ball red carpet. He then squeezed into a reveling GUCCI mesh top for his performance.

ONTD Original: 10 shows or movies that may have influenced Netflix's Dark

$

The missing children, flickering lights, the shadowy local job-center, a (partial) 80s setting, another dimension... Netflix's new sci-fi drama, Dark, was marketed as a "German Stranger Things". However, following its debut, most reviewers seem to be playing down that comparison in favor of other media. Here are ten shows or films that came to mind as I was watching Dark.

Forbrydelsen
This Danish show - later Americanized to become 'The Killing' - featured a missing teen, a community in crisis, and the dark and dour feel that defines the 'Nordic Noir' genre.

Donnie Darko
One music cue and costume combo from Dark seems to be a direct reference to this cult-favorite movie. They also share a few overarching elements, like time travel and a teen lead with a questionable grasp on reality.

Twin Peaks
Dark shares a gloomy town, a forest hotel, and a small-town cast of characters - including one senior citizen who seems to know more about a recent death than they can verbalize - with this David Lynch series.

The X-Files
British Columbia's perpetual fog and drizzle became a character of its own in the 90s Sci-Fi series, but the show's true charm was the human drama between the two leads as they unraveled mysteries about aliens and government conspiracies.

True Detective
A dying town, curious corpses, and low-key Satanic panic? It's bleak, man. The director of Dark, Baran bo Odar, took inspiration from Cary Fukunaga and directed Dark's ten-episode run himself.

Les Revenants
People coming back from the dead provided the slowly unraveling central mystery in this French drama. Yet again, the familial relationships and sense of claustrophobia prove Europe has a firm handle on small-town dread, especially of the supernatural variety.

IT
A town infested with a recurring evil, a yellow raincoat, an 80s setting, and a subterranean world into which children disappear? Check, check, check, and check.

La Jetée
Later used as a spinning-off point for the movie 12 Monkeys, this classic French short explored the inevitability of fate in relation to time travel, across three different eras.

Don't Blink (Doctor Who)
Before Doctor Who ruined one of their better villains with overexposure, the idea of getting transported to another time in which you're forced to live out the rest of your life was frankly terrifying.

Lost
The two shows share strange, loud, industrial noises immediately preceding disappearances, but the end of season one of Dark also leaves viewers with as many questions as answers. If Netflix renews the show, fans are hoping the creators have a solid plan mapped out... unlike certain other dramas.
