Ed Sheeran comments on his alleged Grammy snub

$

0

Ed Sheeran was recently asked if he was disappointed that he didn't get nominated for aoty and soty.

Ed Sheeran says that there is a very clear reason why it happened, and the reason is much much bigger than him. He also adds that that is the way that this year was meant to roll out.

He humbly adds that he's not dying and it's not like he's never going to get another nomination.

He says there are other things in his life to counterbalance it, like him getting an MBE from the palace, going No. 1 on Spotify, going No. 1 on Billboard, having his second ever Billboard No. 1 etc. Says that's the way he lives his life and when one door closes, another one opens.

ONTD Original: 10 Facts About Rebel Icons Meiko Kaji and Tura Satana

By special request, we take a look at two actresses that were known for playing unapologetic, strong female roles. The type of characters that were not bound to the rules of society.

Meiko Kaji
nYUkK8.jpg
“Whenever I had a strong role I was always concerned to make it even stronger.”

Meiko Kaji, an actress that became a legend in Japanese cinema. She was most popular during the 60s/70s, playing roles of outlaws and gang leaders.

1) She was born Masako Ota, but changed her name to Meiko Kaji
2) She said there was an unwritten rule that actresses stay in the same type of roles to cater to a certain audience
3) She originally worked for film studio “Nikkatsu”, but once they started making soft porn films, she left to join Toei studio
4) In order to do sword fight scenes, Meiko had to learn traditional Japanese dance moves
5) Said it was typical of Japanese films at that time to use sensational catchphrases to draw audiences in. But really the plot would be more about social issues, like her film “Sex Hunter!” which was about the persecution of mixed-race teenagers.
6) Was known for her signature “Meiko stare”
7) Although she’s a well-known singer, she did not consider herself a pop star because it was normal for actresses to sing in the movies they starred in
8) She believes that turning a film into a series creates a decline in both the quality of the story and the character. She says that she quit the “Scorpion” series after the 4th film because the scenes were too brutal to film in order to create more shock value for audiences.
9) In 1978, Meiko’s work started to lessen for unknown reasons
10) One of her greatest roles was 1973’s "Lady Snowblood"

Tura Satana
nYU02b.jpg
“I stopped (acting) because I was not one to go sleeping with any of the casting directors. If my resume was not good enough to get the part I would just say thank and leave.”

Tura Satana, an American actress, was a wildcat both on and off the screen. Perhaps it was her no nonsense attitude that she built up in her youth that made her able to portray strong female characters so well in her films. Her movie career was short-lived, but so iconic that she has become a classic cult movie star today.

1) She was born in Hokkaidō, Japan, and grew up in Chicago, Illinois
2) She is of mixed heritage, Filipino, Scots-Irish, and Native American. Her looks made her a target of frequent harassment and fetishism.
3) She was gang raped at the age of 10 and because the boys had families who bribed a judged, she was sent to reform school as punishment for “leading them on”.
4) In her teens she started a vigilante girl gang to get back at the type of guys who raped her when she was young. After learning martial arts and 15 years later, she was able to take revenge on her rapists. They didn’t remember her until she told them.
5) She became an exotic dancer at age 15
6) She was picked for her first film in “Hawaiian Eye” because the producer thought she was well-built for an “oriental”. Which she says was unusual during that time for women of Asian descent.
7) Her breakthrough role in the 1965 film “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”, was the first time director Russ Meyer used no nudity
8) She said her role as Varla in “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” was a way to release the anger she harbored from her childhood
9) She and Elvis Pressley dated, but ended their relationship because he wanted to marry her. She considered him to be very lonely despite his popularity.
10) She taught Elvis how to French kiss telling writer Pamela Des Barres, “Once I showed him the difference between how he was kissing and how I kissed, he said, ‘Oh God, that feels so good.’ When I said, ‘Yeah, it feels good all over too,’ his eyes lit up.”

Meiko Kaji and Tura Satana inspired filmmakers of today to create action parts specifically for women. Rebellious, beautiful, dangerous, and selfish. They played the "bad" girls of the 60's-70's.

Mario Batali admits that he sexually harassed women

“I apologize to the people I have mistreated and hurt. Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted," Batali said. "That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort I have caused to my peers, employees, customers, friends and family."

I have work to do to try to regain the trust of those I have hurt and disappointed. For this reason, I am going to step away from day-to-day operations of my businesses. We built these restaurants so that our guests could have fun and indulge, but I took that too far in my own behavior. I won’t make that mistake again. I want any place I am associated with to feel comfortable and safe for the people who work or dine there."
"I know my actions have disappointed many people. The successes I have enjoyed are owned by everyone on my team. The failures are mine alone. To the people who have been at my side during this time — my family, my partners, my employees, my friends, my fans — I am grateful for your support and hopeful that I can regain your respect and trust. I will spend the next period of time trying to do that.”

- Four women have accused Mario Batali of sexual harassment
- Incidents occurring from the 90s to the latest in 2017
- Allegedly, grabbing breasts, uncomfortable bodily contact, and crude statements.

Ontd Original: Four Tv Shows Set Inside Prison

$
0
0

As we now live in a climate of counting down till the next predator in various high profile industries are exposed, the sad truth is they often don't pay for their crimes. Here is four fictional shows about prison life and a few characters who find themselves in usually harrowing jails worldwide.

Oz (1997-2003)

Where to start with Oz...I would call this a gay show but so many people of various genders & orientations were somehow graphically screwing 24/7 inside a men's max prison. There were some really horrible incarcerated people inside of Oswald State Correctional Facility such as unhinged Adebisi, who always had a knit hat clinging precariously to his bald head, white supremacist leader Schillinger played with too-chilling menace by J.K. Simmons plus Sister Pete (Nuyorican goddess Rita Moreno) the tough-as-fuck nun and prison psychologist. It also gave audiences the engrossing, completely unhealthy ships of Beecher+Keller & O'Reily+Dr. Nathan. Oz is six seasons of politics, murder, sex, sometimes bewildering plotlines and critiques on life & the prison industrial complex during its earlier seasons through the voice of narrator/disabled convict Hill (Harold Perrineau)

Wentworth (2013-)

This Australian show is about Bea (Danielle Cormack) a woman awaiting sentencing for the attempted murder of her husband. Of course Bea has to learn how to navigate this bonkers women's prison filled with plenty of familiar archetypes including a warden/prisoner who is basically a combo of the Trunchbull and Nurse Ratched. Lots of wild fights, intrigue, politics, love, all the works plotwise.

Prison Break (2005-2017)

Prison Break starred a peak Wentworth Miller as Michael, an engineer who trys to free his wrongfully imprisoned brother Lincoln (slab of wood Dominic Purcell) from jail. How? By getting himself thrown in prison to hatch an ridiculously elaborate escape plan. Especially since his brother is convicted of killing the brother of the VP of America. It's as ridiculous a plot as it sounds. And was wildly popular before it got too comfortable in its own hype. The show was brought back for a mildly successful 5th season in May of this year.

Buried (2003)

Underrated actor Lennie James (The Walking Dead) stars as Lee, a career criminal forced to accept a long sentence in a chance to protect a family member. This critically acclaimed British show won a BATA in 2004. Unfortunately it retained poor ratings which caused it to not be renewed. Buried, like Wentworth, explored the often terrifying power hierachies in prison from inmates to staff.

ONTD Original: 10 shows or movies that may have influenced Netflix's Dark

$
0
0

The missing children, flickering lights, the shadowy local job-center, a (partial) 80s setting, another dimension... Netflix's new sci-fi drama, Dark, was marketed as a "German Stranger Things". However, following its debut, most reviewers seem to be playing down that comparison in favor of other media. Here are ten shows or films that came to mind as I was watching Dark.

Forbrydelsen
This Danish show - later Americanized to become 'The Killing' - featured a missing teen, a community in crisis, and the dark and dour feel that defines the 'Nordic Noir' genre.

Donnie Darko
One music cue and costume combo from Dark seems to be a direct reference to this cult-favorite movie. They also share a few overarching elements, like time travel and a teen lead with a questionable grasp on reality.

Twin Peaks
Dark shares a gloomy town, a forest hotel, and a small-town cast of characters - including one senior citizen who seems to know more about a recent death than they can verbalize - with this David Lynch series.

The X-Files
British Columbia's perpetual fog and drizzle became a character of its own in the 90s Sci-Fi series, but the show's true charm was the human drama between the two leads as they unraveled mysteries about aliens and government conspiracies.

True Detective
A dying town, curious corpses, and low-key Satanic panic? It's bleak, man. The director of Dark, Baran bo Odar, took inspiration from Cary Fukunaga and directed Dark's ten-episode run himself.

Les Revenants
People coming back from the dead provided the slowly unraveling central mystery in this French drama. Yet again, the familial relationships and sense of claustrophobia prove Europe has a firm handle on small-town dread, especially of the supernatural variety.

IT
A town infested with a recurring evil, a yellow raincoat, an 80s setting, and a subterranean world into which children disappear? Check, check, check, and check.

La Jetée
Later used as a spinning-off point for the movie 12 Monkeys, this classic French short explored the inevitability of fate in relation to time travel, across three different eras.

Don't Blink (Doctor Who)
Before Doctor Who ruined one of their better villains with overexposure, the idea of getting transported to another time in which you're forced to live out the rest of your life was frankly terrifying.

Lost
The two shows share strange, loud, industrial noises immediately preceding disappearances, but the end of season one of Dark also leaves viewers with as many questions as answers. If Netflix renews the show, fans are hoping the creators have a solid plan mapped out... unlike certain other dramas.
