Jennifer Garner's New Action Film "Peppermint" Finishes Production

$

0
Jennifer Garner's new action movie "Peppermint" has just wrapped production and unsurprisingly she is slowly creeping her way into Alias-style action movies instead of boring Christian mom blog films.

  • Garner is Riley North, a woman who awakens from a coma to find out her family has been brutally murdered; when the justice system fails, she goes from suburban mom to urban guerilla

  • The character then spends years tranforming her body and fight skills (so picture all the training montages in Enough) before becoming an unstoppable vigilante that even the LAPD & F.B.I. can't catch

  • Kyla Drew plays a poor orphan whom Garner saves, because of course. Annie Ilonzeh plays the F.B.I. agent tracking North who probably will let her go free at the end of the movie with a knowing, silent head nod

  • So basically Taken 4: Gloria is the Brave One to Kill Bill at the Juncture.
Also, you aren't the only thinking this movie would be much better if two of the lead actors switched roles.

Long informative interview with Ridley Scott at the source as well. Few highlights:

-- Went to NYC and straight to Chris Plummer to give him the role right after Spacey was removed.
-- Is way ahead of schedule with reshoots, sends all scenes shot straight to the editor so they can insert and have an updated copy of the movie on hand, to this day.
-- Still set to release the movie on Dec. 22, and definitely in time for awards season.
-- Did not reach out to Kevin Spacey about being removed, doesn't seem like he gave enough of a shit to, to be honest. He did like working with Kevin and his performance.
-- Did not see any suspicious behavior from Spacey but wasn't really paying attention. He's glad all of the assholes of Hollywood, especially Weinstein, are being called out.

Video footage of Victoria's Secret models backstage shows many of them appearing to sing along to the n-word in Cardi B's 'Bodak Yellow'. There is only one black model in the room yet the word is clearly audible over the group of women.

The only exception appears to be model Devon Windsor who skips the line entirely.

The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer (Kate Summerscale)
27774749WON:: Edgar Award (Best Fact Crime)

Early in the morning of Monday 8 July 1895, thirteen-year-old Robert Coombes and his twelve-year-old brother Nattie set out from their small, yellow-brick terraced house in East London to watch a cricket match at Lord's. Their father had gone to sea the previous Friday, the boys told their neighbours, and their mother was visiting her family in Liverpool. Over the next ten days Robert and Nattie spent extravagantly, pawning their parents' valuables to fund trips to the theatre and the seaside. But as the sun beat down on the Coombes house, a strange smell began to emanate from the building. When the police were finally called to investigate, the discovery they made sent the press into a frenzy of horror and alarm, and Robert and Nattie were swept up in a criminal trial that echoed the outrageous plots of the 'penny dreadful' novels that Robert loved to read. In The Wicked Boy, Kate Summerscale has uncovered a fascinating true story of murder and morality - it is not just a meticulous examination of a shocking Victorian case, but also a compelling account of its aftermath, and of man's capacity to overcome the past.

The Sun is Also a Star (Nicola Yoon)
28763485WON: Coretta Scott King Award (John Steptoe Award for New Talent)

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

    The Devourers (Indra Das)
27245999WON: LAMBDA Literary Awards (LGBT SF/F/Horror)

On a cool evening in Kolkata, India, beneath a full moon, as the whirling rhythms of traveling musicians fill the night, college professor Alok encounters a mysterious stranger with a bizarre confession and an extraordinary story. Tantalized by the man’s unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the stranger’s behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins.

From these documents spills the chronicle of a race of people at once more than human yet kin to beasts, ruled by instincts and desires blood-deep and ages-old. The tale features a rough wanderer in seventeenth-century Mughal India who finds himself irrevocably drawn to a defiant woman—and destined to be torn asunder by two clashing worlds. With every passing chapter of beauty and brutality, Alok’s interest in the stranger grows and evolves into something darker and more urgent.

    Her Every Wish (Courtney Milan)
    22817504WON: RITA Award (Romance Novella)

Crash has never let the circumstances of his birth, or his lack of a last name, bother him. His associations may be unsavory, but money, friends, and infamy open far more interesting doors than respect ever could. His sole regret? Once lovely, sweet Daisy Whitlaw learned the truth about how he made his fortune, she cut him off.

Daisy’s father is dead, her mother is in ill health, and her available funds have dwindled to a memory. When the local parish announces a Christmas charity bequest to help young people start a trade, it’s her last chance. So what if the grants are intended for men? If she’s good enough, she might bluff her way into a future.

When Crash offers to show her how to swagger with confidence, she knows he is up to no good. But with her life in the balance, she’s desperate enough to risk the one thing she hasn’t yet lost: her heart.

    The Power (Naomi Alderman)
29751398WON: Baileys Prize for Women's Fiction

In The Power the world is a recognisable place: there's a rich Nigerian kid who larks around the family pool; a foster girl whose religious parents hide their true nature; a local American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But something vital has changed, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power - they can cause agonising pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world changes utterly.

This extraordinary novel by Naomi Alderman, a Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year and Granta Best of British writer, is not only a gripping story of how the world would change if power was in the hands of women but also exposes, with breath-taking daring, our contemporary world.

    The Underground Railroad (Colson Whitehead)
    30555488WON: Pulitzer Prize (Fiction)

Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hellish for all the slaves but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood - where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned and, though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted.

In Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor - engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora and Caesar's first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven - but the city's placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. Even worse: Ridgeway, the relentless slave catcher, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state by state, seeking true freedom.

As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America from the brutal importation of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman's ferocious will to escape the horrors of bondage and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.

The Girl of Ink and Stars (Kiren Millwood Hargrave)
27973757WON: British Book Awards (Children's Book of the Year); Waterstone's Children's Book Prize (Overall Winner and Younger Fiction)

Forbidden to leave her island, Isabella Riosse dreams of the faraway lands her father once mapped.

But the world beyond the walls is a monster-filled wasteland – and beneath the dry rivers and smoking mountains, a legendary fire demon is stirring from its sleep. Soon, following her map, her heart and an ancient myth, Isabella discovers the true end of her journey: to save the island itself.

Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro)
6334WON: Nobel Prize for Literature (awarding author's work as a whole)

As a child, Kathy–now thirty-one years old–lived at Hailsham, a private school in the scenic English countryside where the children were sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe that they were special and that their well-being was crucial not only for themselves but for the society they would eventually enter. Kathy had long ago put this idyllic past behind her, but when two of her Hailsham friends come back into her life, she stops resisting the pull of memory.

And so, as her friendship with Ruth is rekindled, and as the feelings that long ago fueled her adolescent crush on Tommy begin to deepen into love, Kathy recalls their years at Hailsham. She describes happy scenes of boys and girls growing up together, unperturbed–even comforted–by their isolation. But she describes other scenes as well: of discord and misunderstanding that hint at a dark secret behind Hailsham's nurturing facade. With the dawning clarity of hindsight, the three friends are compelled to face the truth about their childhood–and about their lives now.

Garrison Keillor, responsible for the worst show on NPR, has been fired by Minnesota Public Radio due to allegations of “inappropriate behavior.” No further details at this point.

Garrison Keillor retired last year as host for Prairie Home Companion but was still employed as producer by the network. Unfortunately, Prairie Home Companion is still aired every week much to the chagrin of everyone with good taste.

Yesterday he defended Al Franken’s creepy behavior in an op-ed for the WaPo.

A month following the announcement of the project and release of the EP's final track, "EON BREAK", Porter Robinson has finally dropped a 5-track EP under the moniker Virtual Self with 3 tracks coming from the alias' character technic-Angel and 2 from Pathselector. Though the EP is heavier and more niche than what was seen in 2014's dreamy Worlds, it serves as a quality follow-up to the acclaimed album. According to the Virtual Self website, there are 5 more tracks labeled "unknown". Hopefully this means a part 2 to the EP soon!

I'm really enjoying this EP, obviously lol. Worlds was great, but this is much more up my alley and feels more fleshed out and refined. Looking forward to seeing where this project goes.
