Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner cancels more events following sexual harassment allegations

$

-It broke last week that Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner allegedly told an employee: "You owe it to me to let me see you naked."
-Events promoting his new book in Santa Monica, Portland, and Seattle have been cancelled.
-Last week, Weiner denied the allegations. Cancelled an interview when told the allegations would be brought up. Other venues on his book tour chose to cancel his appearances.
-The Mad Men cast and crew remains silent.

-The book deals with themes of rape and murder, involving a teenage girl who some critics have said is not a fully realized character but a "pawn" in a game of toxic masculinity between the adult male protagonist and adult male antagonist.

-Weiner, on the inspiration for the novel: "The story comes from me witnessing a young girl walking into a building and a construction worker seeing [and ogling] her, and me thinking, ‘What if her dad had seen that?’"

Jesus fucking Christ.

source:12345

He's got that new Amazon series coming out (which he directs the entirety of, and which Christina Hendricks is starring in) and they just fired Weinstein from the project, so I'm sure they're working overtime to ensure these particular allegations get less attention compared to some of the others.

Sarah Silverman On Louis C.K.: 'He Wielded His Power With Women in Fucked Up Ways'

$

“One of my best friends of over 25 years, Louis C.K., masturbated in front of women. He wielded his power with women in fucked up ways, sometimes to the point where they left comedy entirely. I could couch this with heartwarming stories of our friendship and what a great dad he is, but that’s totally irrelevant, isn’t it? Yes, it is. It’s a real mind fuck, you know, because I love Louis. But Louis did these things. Both of those statements are true. So I just keep asking myself, ‘Can you love someone who did bad things? Can you still love them?’

“I can mull that over later certainly, because the only people that matter right now are the victims. They are victims, and they are victims because of something he did. So I hope it’s OK if I am, at once, very angry for the women he wronged and the culture that enabled it, and also sad, because he’s my friend. But I believe with all my heart that this moment in time is essential. It’s vital that people are held accountable for their actions, no matter who they are. We need to be better. We will be better. I can’t fucking wait to be better.”

Dragula Episode 3 - Rock n Roll Goddesses

For this challenge, the queens were split into two teams to form rock n roll bands and do a live lipsync performance. In addition, they also had to do a "rock goddess" runway. Two queens from the losing band then face off in an extermination challenge in which they have to get the nastiest tattoo they can think of.

Biqtch Puddin'!!

After being the weakest last week next to Monikkie, Biqtch was given the opportunity to prove herself as the frontwoman of her band, and slayed the house down. Well deserved win, though I wouldn't have been mad at Dahli either.

Kendra Onixxx

(sorry this is the only gif i could find of her from this ep and ig posts won't embed for me ;0)

Despite being the stronger performer in her group, Kendra was put in the bottom for her un-rock n roll runway. Then was super extra about her tattoo. Too bad bitch, you could have knocked out one of the the strongest girls (Victoria)!!

i loved this fucking episode!!! my top 3 is all shook up, are you shook as well ontd??

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Ta-Nahesi Coates on Representation in Writing and the Intolerant Left

$

In the discussion, Adichie said that she believes the left is now an orthodoxy that you have to follow, "and if you don’t, you become a bad, evil person, and it doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past or what you stand for. You just become evil and you’re demonized."

She talks about what this means for her in the context of being a writer: "So if you write about a white woman, for many parts of the left it’s valid criticism to say you ignored Mexicans and Bangladeshis. And I’m just thinking, No. People have to be allowed to tell the story. I don’t necessarily want a white woman telling the Nigerian woman story."

She and Coates both talk about the challenges in white writers telling the stories of minorities, though cite examples where it was done sensitively. Still Coates notes that there is a history behind disrespectful representation of African Americans. Adichie points out that also that due to being a minority living in a world "steeped in whiteness" she is acquainted with whiteness in a way that white people are not with other races. She says that often people are afraid to ask her questions and so end up saying things that are incorrect.

Celebs react to tax reform bill passed by the US House today

$
0
0
Background: today in the House, Republicans passed a tax reform bill that would significantly alter how tax revenues are collected in the US. It would give massive tax cuts to the very wealthy and corporations. It would eliminate Obamacare's individual mandate, which would kick 13 million people off their healthcare. It would eliminate various deductions for things like student loans and medical expenses. It would also eliminate state income tax deductions, which would particularly hurt people who live in states with high income taxes (which are all states that usually vote Democrat). (Source: CNNMoney) The current Senate version of the bill would actually increase taxes on the poor by 25% by 2027! The only chance to stop this now is in the Senate. Let Mia Farrow Darren Hayes tell you how:

Edited to add: actually, Mia Farrow gave the wrong number for the congressional switchboard! Why you do this, Mia? Here's someone with the right number, Darren Hayes from Savage Garden!

OP's note: Please call that number twice so you can be connected to both your Senators. Make sure you say your name and zip code, so they know you're a constituent! You can just be brief and say you oppose the tax reform bill. Congressional staffers are all extremely nice, even if they aren't on your side, please don't be afraid to call! If you'd rather not talk to someone live, just call after work hours and leave a voice mail, those are just as effective.

I'm going to let Cher, in her own inimitable way, sum up what's at stake:

Alyssa Milano provides a number that will actually give you a sample message before connecting you to your senator. My only problem with it is that it seems to only connect you to one of your senators:

Tim Robbins:

Rosie O'Donnell goes off on Rep. Steve Scalise, who survived being shot a few months ago:

Not all celebrities are against this tax reform. In the interest of being #FairAndBalanced, here's a different take:

Sources: CNNMoney article, The Hill article, Mia Farrow tweet, Darren Hayes tweet, Cher tweet, Alyssa Milano tweet, Tim Robbins tweet, Rosie O'Donnell tweet, Antonio Sabáto Jr. tweet

American ONTDers, please call your two Senators at 202-224-3121 (I gave the wrong number earlier, I'm so sorry!), we can stop this! Three Republican no votes would torpedo it, and we probably have 1-2 already.

The Controversy Around Bollywood Film "Padmavati" Gets Even Uglier

$

A fringe Rajput group in India called Karni Sena has threatened physical violence against the lead actress (Deepika Padukone) and director (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) of the upcoming Bollywood film, Padmavati. Karni Sena have threatened to cut off Padukone's nose and behead Bhansali if the film gets released. The leader of the group exclaimed, "Rajputs never raise a hand on women but if need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshman did to Shurpanakha." This refers to the act of cutting someone's nose off. Karni Sena is also the same group that assaulted Bhansali on the set of the film earlier this year. Deepika Padukone has received special security since the threat was issued out.

Padmavati is a fictionalized account based on the poem, Padmavat. It is about the real-life historical figures Rani Padmini (Deepika Padukone), Rana Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh). Rani Padmini was a Hindu Rajput queen and Ratan Singh, who was the ruler of Mewar, was her husband. Khilji was the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, and according to legend, Khilji tried to invade Chittorgarh (which was a part of the Mewar Kingdom) in order to capture Rani Padmini. He was said to have been mesmerized by her and attempted to force her to marry him.

The controversy began after a rumor was spread that there would be a romantic dream sequence involving Padmavati and Khilji in the film. There was actually no evidence that there was going to be such a scene in the film in the first place, and Bhansali has profusely tried to assure everyone that the rumor was false. Unfortunately, it did not stop the threats, protests, and vandalism against the film. The rumor of a romantic scene between Padmavati and Khilji angered some Rajputs/Hindus because it would have been historically inaccurate and the prospect of a Hindu queen being involved with the "Muslim invader" adds to the indignation. For this reason, there have been calls for the film to be banned in India.

ONTD original: 10 cosy reads!

$

0

Having a hard time? There's no better cure than a cosy evening curled up with a nice book and a cup of hot chocolate. Here are 10 recs for heartwarming, cosy, feel-good books.

Miss Buncle's Book
by D.E. Stevenson
Barbara Buncle is in a bind. Times are harsh, and Barbara's bank account has seen better days. Stumped for ideas, Barbara draws inspiration from fellow residents of her quaint English village, writing a revealing novel that features the townsfolk as characters. The smashing bestseller is published under the pseudonym John Smith, which is a good thing because villagers recognize the truth. But what really turns her world around is when events in real life start mimicking events in the book. Funny, charming, and insightful, this novel reveals what happens when people see themselves through someone else's eyes.

OP SAYS: This book is super funny and adorable. It's a perfect feel-good read, and there are sequels if you finish it and find you can't get enough of the characters!

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
by Winifred Watson
Miss Pettigrew, an approaching-middle-age governess, was accustomed to a household of unruly English children. When her employment agency sends her to the wrong address, her life takes an unexpected turn. The alluring nightclub singer, Delysia LaFosse, becomes her new employer, and Miss Pettigrew encounters a kind of glamour that she had only met before at the movies. Over the course of a single day, both women are changed forever.

OP SAYS: I also love the movie with Amy Adams and Lee Pace, it's a perfect companion for the book.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand
by Helen Simonson
The Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition?

OP SAYS: I love this book a lot and thought it was pretty sensitive in dealing with some difficult subjects. Generally speaking, I'd say this book is a drama, but there is also a lot of dry humour, a cute romance, and a happy ending.

A Man Called Ove
by Fredrik Backman
Ove is a curmudgeon. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell, but must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

OP SAYS: Ready for a good cry? This book freaking destroyed me, and yet it is so heartwarming that here I am recommending it for a cosy read (although "feel-good" might be a stretch).

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
by Mary Ann Shaffer
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb... Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

OP SAYS: This book is freaking adorable and there might as well be a picture of it next to "heartwarming" in the dictionary. If you like it, try also 84 Charing Cross Road! (And there's a movie coming out with Lily James and Michiel Huisman).

Frederica
by Georgette Heyer
When Frederica brings her younger siblings to London determined to secure a brilliant marriage for her beautiful sister, she seeks out their distant "cousin", the Marquis of Alverstoke. Lovely, competent, and refreshingly straightforward, Frederica makes such a strong impression that to his own amazement, the Marquis agrees to help launch them all into society. Normally wary of his family, which includes two overbearing sisters and innumerable favor-seekers, Lord Alverstoke does his best to keep his distance. But with his enterprising - and altogether entertaining - country cousins getting into one scrape after another right on his doorstep, before he knows it the Marquis finds himself dangerously embroiled...

OP SAYS: I am not usually one for big age differences in romance (24-37 here), but Heyer definitely, 100% sold it to me, and this book is SO HILARIOUS that out of alllllll the Heyer books I've read, this is the one I'm recommending for a perfect feel-good read. Trust me on this.

Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops
by Jen Campbell
This book is a miscellany of hilarious and peculiar bookshop moments: 'Can books conduct electricity?', 'My children are just climbing your bookshelves: that's ok... isn't it?'. A John Cleese Twitter question ['What is your pet peeve?'], first sparked the 'Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops' blog, which grew over three years into one bookseller's collection of ridiculous conversations on the shop floor. From 'Did Beatrix Potter ever write a book about dinosaurs?' to the hunt for a paperback which could forecast the next year's weather; and from 'I've forgotten my glasses, please read me the first chapter' to 'Excuse me... is this book edible?: here is a book for heroic booksellers and booklovers everywhere.

OP SAYS: If you aren't really in the mood for a novel, this is a perfect bit of lighthearted fun for book nerds. I was laughing so hard there were tears in my eyes, and the sequel is just as funny.

Lady Susan
by Jane Austen
"Oh what a mistake were you guilty in marrying a man of his age! - just old enough to be formal, ungovernable and to have the gout - too old to be agreable, and too young to die." Beautiful, flirtatious, and recently widowed, the unscrupulous Lady Susan Vernon seeks an advantageous second marriage for herself, while attempting to push her daughter into a dismal match. A magnificently crafted novel of Regency manners and mores that will delight Austen enthusiasts with its wit and elegant expression.

OP SAYS: A-ha! You thought I was going to rec Pride and Prejudice, didn't you? But this overlooked Austen gem is a hilarious, perfect short read for a cosy afternoon. I was delighted at Lady Susan's conniving, manipulative ways.

The Secret Garden
by Frances Hodgson Burnett
When orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire Moors, she finds it full of secrets. The mansion has nearly one hundred rooms, and her uncle keeps himself locked up. And at night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. The gardens surrounding the large property are Mary's only escape. Then, Mary discovers a secret garden, surrounded by walls and locked with a missing key. One day, with the help of two unexpected companions, she discovers a way in. Is everything in the garden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?

OP SAYS: This book is a children's classic, and guaranteed to warm even the coldest heart.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
by Anita Loos
This delirious 1925 Jazz Age classic introduced readers to Lorelei Lee, the small-town girl from Little Rock. Outrageous and charming, this not-so-dumb blonde has become the archetype of the footloose, good-hearted gold digger (not that she sees herself that way). Masquerading as her diaries, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows Lorelei as she entertains suitors across Europe before returning home to marry a millionaire. In this delightfully droll and witty book, Lorelei’s glamorous pragmatism shines, as does Anita Loos’s mastery of irony and dialect.

OP SAYS: Everyone knows the Marilyn Monroe film (which is great), but did you know that the original Lorelei Lee was a flapper? It just makes the story that much more fun. It is truly priceless to read Lorelei's (hilariously misspelled) innocent-sounding diary entries as she lives the high life and fleeces one guy after another.

“They pointed to no other working romantic lead, no other actress, that was out,” she told Allure. “I didn’t come out. I was never in. It’s limiting, that LGBTQ thing. It served a function as an umbrella for marginalized people to whom rights were being denied, but it loses its efficacy because of the nuanced nature of humanity.”

“As we become more educated and expand the facts of our nature, we keep adding letters,” she continued. “It was a great shield, but now we’re stuck behind it. It’s so important to resist labels. I don’t care how many letters you add. At some point, it’s going to spell ‘WE ARE HUMAN.’ ”

Stacy London Blocked Clinton Kelly on Twitter

Guess we'll never get that What Not To Wear reunion some of us have been hoping for.

Clinton Kelly and Stacy London co-hosted the TLC fashion makeover show for ten years, from 2003 to 2013, but apparently they are no longer on speaking terms.

Users accused Kelly of starting the feud with his book, I Hate Everyone Except You, in which he said London demanded to be the center of attention: “For that reason, and perhaps others, she received more attention than I did. Even though I rarely wanted attention, I found myself continually annoyed that she did...I either adored her or despised her and never anything in between. We spent nearly sixty hours a week in captivity, rarely more than an arm’s length away from each other. Trust me when I tell you that is just too much time to spend with any other human being you didn’t choose of your own free will.”

Kelly replied:
