Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio Movie is dead

- He confirmed that it's not going to happen.
- The movie was going to take place during the ascension of fascism in Italy, with Mussolini: "It was a good time to discuss the idea of being a puppet or being a human.
- His fascination with Pinocchio is related to his interest in Frankenstein: “They are both about creatures that are created and then get lost in a world they don’t understand,” he said. “And they are both journeys of understanding, and journeys of evolution of the spirit.
- RIP.

On Finding Filming For The Last Jedi To Be Much More Pressure Than The first Star Wars Movie
'I didn't think I was good in the first film, and I was struggling with that.'

On How Having Fewer Scenes With Co-Star John Boyega In The Second Star Wars Briefly Stressed Her Out
'It's not this big adventure that I'm on with John [unlike the first movie]. I was thinking I did the first one because I didn't really know what I was getting myself into and I was having loads of fun, and suddenly I'm realising what this actually is, and I can't f**king do this. I'm highly dramatic – so it's all 'oh my God'…finally I was like 'Oh yeah, this is working.''

On Dealing With The Medical Condition Endometriosis
'I was in my flat going nuts, and then my skin got really bad in the stress of it all, and I hadn't been well – I had holes in my gut wall and stuff – and we were trying to figure out what to do with that because I'd felt poorly.'

On Meeting Barbara Streisand And Featuring In Her 2016 Album 'Encore'
'I went to her house and we talked about [psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl] Jung because my dad loves Jung, and we were talking about dreams, and I left and got super emotional, not because she's famous, but because she's amazing. Part of her reputation comes from being a woman. If it was a man being 'controlling' about his career, people would just say he knows what he wants.'

Billboard: "When Did Feminism Become a Job Requirement for Female Pop Stars?"

0
0

Billboard has published a piece on their site discussing feminism with pop stars.
- Says the movement started Beyoncé when released her self titled album that embraced feminism and she also performed with the word FEMINIST in lights behind her
- Journalists then began asking every female pop star the same question: “Are you a feminist?"
- Points out how Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Beyoncé all previously said “no” until late 2013
- Says Swift gets critiqued for her "spineless" feminism when she is one of the few pop stars "to engage in an actual feminist act—suing a former radio host whom she accused of groping her, delivering unwavering testimony against him"
- Says now every "pop star’s every action is analyzed for its feminist purity"; from people saying Beyoncé's marriage isn't feminist to Lorde and Selena Gomez arguing over whose not doing feminism right
- Basically, says pop stars aren't women’s studies scholars, and we shouldn't expect them to be. Concludes by saying that it's "counterproductive to write off every successful woman who doesn’t measure up to some impossible feminist ideal."

Daniel Franzese Accuses Bijou Phillips of Body Shaming, Homophobia, and Physical Assault

0
0

Most of ONTD may know Daniel Franzese best for his role in Mean Girls, but his first role was in Larry Clark’s Bully. He was inspired by Ellen Page sharing the abuse she suffered at the hands of Brett Ratner and decided to share his own story. Daniel Franzese identifies as queer, was not out yet, and was worried how it would affect his career. Bijou Phillips abused him on set, demanding to know if he was gay and subsequently making fun of his sexual orientation and body. He also says she kicked him very hard in the back of the head, possibly giving him a concussion. He describes the experience as “the most stressful experience of my life on or off set” that resulted in “a PTSD that had me stay closeted for a long time.”

FYI she is now a scientologist and is married to Danny Masterson, who has been accused of rape by four separate women.

Daniel’s full account below the cut.

Supergirl Star Melissa Benoist Calls for Industry Reform; Says Harrasses Must Be Held Accountable

0

In a follow up to this post, some of the actors on shows Andrew Kreisberg run have spoken out in support of the people Andrew Kreisberg of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment for women. Fifteen women came forward and four men also came forward to support the women making accusations and talked about their failed attempts to intervene and get Kreisberg to stop abusing his power on set. Kreisberg has since been suspended by the CW.

Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist released this statement directly to twitter where she criticizes Kreisberg and says people who speak up should always be heard.

Source

Arrow star Emily Bett Rickards’ statement also seems to rebuke a tweet posted by Marc Guggenheim, a producer on Arrow and other DC shows Kreisberg runs. FYI he has not released a statement on Kreisberg but had time to whine about something that does not exist.

Source

People were obviously critical of this tweet and pressed him for comment. This is all he had to say:

Chyler Leigh portrays Supergirl’s sister Alex Danvers on the show and supports Melissa’s statement and women speaking out:

Mods: I tried looking for more reactions but could not find any other actors or staff commenting on this. This took a long time sifting through social media of various actors since Kreisberg ran four shows featuring large ensembles. Ciara Renee, who plays Hawkgirl, has retweeted Melissa, Emily, and Chyler’s tweets though. Please consider accepting this regardless. Major media sources are reporting on these social media posts.

Amir Khan Gets Back With His Wife, Faryal Makhdoom

Amir and Faryal seem to have patched things up after a dramatic break up during August. Both took to social media to attack one another. Amir also said on twitter and snapchat that he was going to divorce Faryal.

Now things are "looking up" as Amir posts a cuddly pic of the two on twitter.

1) Amir accused Faryal of cheating with mma fighter Anthony Johnson
2) Faryal accused Amir of cheating with prostitutes
3) Faryal had a very public row with her in-laws over the her attire and behavior

Will these two make it work or is another public battle just around the corner?

The Trump Presidency: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

0
0

- John talks about the norms that Trump's precidency has violated
- and the way leaders engage with us and furthermore we engage with each other
- The main topic: the real damage is not in how Trump says things, but the three key techniques that he uses to insulate himself from critisism and consequence, that could potentially far outlast his precidency if we're not careful:

  • Delegitimizing media (attacking the media (and doing so as the president))

  • Whatabautism (the practise of changing the subject to someone else's perceived wrongdoing, also an old soviet propaganda tool. The reason it is dangerous because it implies that all actions, regardless of context, share a moral equivalence, and since nobody is perfect all critisism is hypocritical and everybody should do whatever they want (and apparently they use it on Fox all the time))

  • Trolling (Trump doing things that often have no effect other than to piss off his perceived enemies. If there's one thing Trump has manages to do, it's to make his enemies unhappy, which to many of his supporters counts as a victory. The surest proof of a troll is when the troll is confronted and they have to either put up of shut up, and Trump bascially just deflects and doesn't take responsibilty of what he's said)

All of these techinques already exists but now they're coming from the Oval Office, which not only legitimizes them, but risks them spreading, which they've already done. John Oliver shows a few examples of this and warns people not to let it become the standard disocurce in the US because "otherwise we're fucked".

"We should train ourselves to identify these techniques because their sole end point is the erosion of our ability to decide what's important, have an honest debate, and hold one another accountable. That erosion can be so gradual that it can be difficult to spot."

Americans should take some hope from this year's small victories, but these victories should not make you complacent since they're in no way a guarantee that the mid-terms might turn out at all well, but rather have them give you strength to keep going.

OP: Bless this show and it's excellent investigating reportage! (I think that's what it is?), anyways, this episode was really interesting to me and I thought people should see it (even though everyone is tired of talking about Tr*mp all the time). This is my second post here and this time I tried writing down a somewhat good transcript of what he says, hope this is ok.
